Dear Parents and Friends

Welcome to Week 3.

Thank God for Exercise!

With the weather warming up, it is inspiring to see so many people out exercising: walkers, runners, cyclists, swimmers, kayakers, surfers just to name a few; and as I stepped out for a walk recently, it occurred to me what a blessing it is to have the capacity to exercise.

Exercise takes time, space, energy and often money; luxuries so many of the world’s population lack.

Yes, exercise can be onerous and can demand commitment, but it also aids brain function, lifts our emotions, reduces stress, helps us sleep better, protects us from illness and strengthens our bodies. It truly is one of the wonderful gifts God gives us here on the Coast.

When I consider all this, I can’t help but agree with King David as he wrote in Psalm 103:

Praise the Lord, my souL; aLL my inmost being, praise his hoLy name. Praise the Lord, my souL, and forget not aLL his benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Yes, thank God for exercise and the heart work He does in us!

May all God’s blessings be known to you as this final term of 2016 unfolds.

Thirteen pianos are sprinkled throughout the streets and public buildings of Prague. On a walk through the city it is almost inevitable that you will pass a street piano, and just as inevitable that someone will be playing a tune. There are daily impromptu concerts throughout the city which draw in the passers-by, children have lessons at the pianos and YouTube reveals people from all walks of life tinkling the ivories (http://youtu.be/PBju7K0NOKg).

The placement of pianos around the Czech Republic’s largest city was funded by Ondrej Kobza, a local cafe owner. The piano project seems implausible. There are many reasons that the idea should fail, most obviously vandalism, and the weather (it snows hard in Prague and the rain can be fierce). Ondrej was told that his idea was ridiculous a hundred times over, but rather than being deterred, he shrugged and proceeded regardless. Ondrej openly admitted that the project might fail, but claimed that whatever the result, there would be something interesting to learn.

The pianos have now been successfully sitting in Prague public spaces for several years – little upright testaments to the power of creative thinking and tenacity. Each piano has a wooden case to offer shelter

watch fellow classmates being recognised when they have worked hard and done their best. Doing things for their own reward is a concept we learn as we grow older. While children are young, we can help them develop and grow by placing the focus on their strengths, the greatest of which are qualities of character, which will help see them through the challenges of life. At Immanuel, every student is equally valued. From time to time, it is more than appropriate that we formally acknowledge the outstanding achievements in the areas of endeavour noted above.

Secondary School families are reminded that attendance for all Years 7 to 12 students is mandatory. Naturally, we are hoping that extended family and friends will also be able to join us. The evening commences at 6.30pm (6.10pm for a musical prelude) on Thursday, 17 November at Lifepointe Baptist Church, 186 Wises Road, Buderim.

‘Trying Times’

We are noticing an increasing number of students “under pressure” at the moment. The majority of these, approaching the end of the year, are straining under the weight of assessment tasks and pending exams. For some, this pressure is exacerbated by poor study habits, insufficient sleep or distractions (often technology).

In our ‘quick and click’ lifestyle there can be an expectation of rapid success and a willingness to give up on anything that has not come quickly and easily. Real learning occurs when we do have to struggle and think. Learning is like food – the quick takeaway version is easy, but a constant fast food diet leaves us flabby and eventually bored. For good growth, we need a balanced diet that takes time to prepare and consume. It gives us something worthwhile to chew over.

We are learning and growing when we have to try different approaches, test our thinking through practice and push ourselves to the next level of understanding. Sometimes it is a fear of or sense of failure that prevents people from going to the next level. Thomas Edison said, “I haven’t failed; I’ve found 10,000 ways it didn’t work.” The difference between those who succeed and those who do not is often more about those who persist and those who do not. I will leave you with these wise words:

Every blessing to our families for the coming fortnight.

It is so pleasing to see Primary School students working hard each and every day. The enthusiasm for learning is evident across Years P to 6. Thank you to each and every student for trying to be the best you can be. It’s hard to believe how rapidly this term is going! The remaining weeks still contain many events and activities – Prep Orientations, Twilight Concert, Primary School Disco (P-6), 2017 Class Orientation Morning, Awards Night and Year 6 Graduation. We look forward to sharing these events with students and families.

We also welcomed the following new students and their families to the Primary School in the last few days: Michael (Prep R), Lara (2C), Kian (4L) and Bill (5J). We are very blessed to have you join our community.

from the weather and a caretaker who ensures that the instruments are closed up each night and protected. Many of these caretakers are homeless people who have volunteered to care for a piano. Ondrej had a hope that music would connect people and that public spaces would become not just be places to rush by, but to be enjoyed. He succeeded. It could easily have been otherwise.

The Prague piano project has me asking myself how I respond under pressure. Do I too easily abandon an idea in the face of obstacles, or do I bring more creativity to the situation? Am I put off by the idea of not succeeding or I am curious about what a failure might teach? Ondrej called his pianos a ‘syndrome of accident’. No one could predict the result of the project. The happy accident has been that moments of spontaneous connection and joy arise across the city.

2017 Class Orientation Morning

On Thursday, 24 November all students in Years 1 to 6 in 2017 will take part in orientation. The morning involves new and existing students in the Primary School spending a short period with their 2017 class teacher. It allows an opportunity for teachers to share information with their new class about the exciting year ahead at Immanuel, as well as begin that important community-building process within the classroom. Families will be notified of 2017 class placements prior to the day.

Years 4-6 Awards Evening

The Primary School Awards Evening will take place in the Worship Centre on Friday, 25 November. Students will be required to wear full dress uniform and will sit with their class teachers until the end of the evening.

The Year 6 Graduation will be held as a separate event on Tuesday, 29 November at 2.00pm also in the Worship Centre. More information will be sent to Year 6 families in the coming weeks.

We look forward to celebrating another wonderful year with our families.

PE

All children in Years 1 to 6 will need their swimming gear for PE lessons this term. If your child is unable to participate for any of their lessons, please email Mr Johnson E: [email protected] or send in a written note.

Uniform

It is great to see all of our students wearing their uniform with pride. A reminder should your child be unable to wear a uniform item for a particular reason, an email or diary note must be provided so an exemption card can be issued from the Primary School Office.

SCISSA

Thursday, 10 November is the fourth and final SCISSA Gala Day for 2016. I thank all students and coaches for your efforts in another great season of sport. Years 4 to 6 families will be sent more details about the day shortly.

2016 SCISSA T-20 Cricket Championships

Samsung Primary Schools Cup 2016

The Samsung Primary School’s Cup is a Netball Queensland competition open to all children in Years 4 to 6. This year saw 110 teams come together in Ipswich to experience competitive netball in a fun environment.

Eighteen students represented ILC from Years 5 and 6, ILC Blue and ILC Yellow.

ILC Blue played five hard games on the first day, only losing one game. They were placed in Division 2 on the second day and fought hard. They played with great determination from the first whistle until the end of their ninth and final game.

Match ball for the competition was awarded to Nina Burdall who at all times worked hard, was a great team player and a great ambassador for ILC netball.

ILC Yellow was a development team. Most of these girls had never played competitive netball before. They played five games on their first day, improving with each game, showing great determination and team spirit. It was a joy to watch them win their first game on the second day.

Match ball was awarded to Danielle Toovey who never gave up, fought for every ball and improved her play every time she stepped on the court.

Many thanks to coaches and managers Kylie Brown, Natalie Jarrott, Deb McCann and Roxanne Osborne for giving the girls an amazing weekend. Thank you to all the girls who were great ambassadors for ILC.

2016 Sports Awards Presentations

This morning we celebrated the success of our 2016 Sports Awards recipients. The dedication and persistence required to achieve at this level of sporting excellence is enormous and we wish all of our sporting representatives the very best for their future endeavours. It was lovely to have so many of our parents joining us for the presentations and sharing morning tea. The list of awardees follows the Secondary School Sports section in this newsletter.

Volunteers Lunch (20 October)

We are looking forward to spending some time with our volunteers tomorrow at the 2016 Volunteers’ Luncheon. This special event provides an opportunity for us to acknowledge the ongoing support of our community helpers. Whether it’s providing assistance in the tuckshop, being part of Food For Families, helping at major events, or reading to our primary students, our volunteers play a vital role in the success of our College and its interactions with families. We are very fortunate to have them!

Kerry-Anne McDavitt and Rick Farbach Award Presentations (26 October)

Next Wednesday, the Secondary School will participate in a special assembly reserved for the presentation of the Kerry-Anne McDavitt and Rick Farbach Music Awards. The Kerry-Anne McDavitt Music Award is always presented to a Year 11 student who has demonstrated outstanding qualities in the areas of leadership, commitment and dedication to music at Immanuel Lutheran College. The recipient must have also achieved significant improvement in their chosen area of instrumental or choral performance music. The Rick Farbach Jazz Scholarship is presented to a Year 12 student who has demonstrated outstanding qualities in the areas of music excellence, leadership, commitment and dedication to music, and who plans to utilise their music skills beyond their time at Immanuel. The recipient must also have achieved significant improvement in their chosen area of instrumental or choral performance music. We are looking forward to this presentation, during which each of the chosen recipients will deliver a short performance.

Twilight Concert

A great night of entertainment awaits at the Twilight Concert on Thursday, 27 October. The Twilight Concert will be held at the LifePointe Baptist Church, 186 Wises Road, from 6.00pm. It is a night to celebrate all that has been achieved by our Music, Dance, Drama, Visual Arts and Film Television and New Media students over the course of 2016.

Friends of Music will be selling a BBQ dinner in the hour prior with

all profits supporting the College’s Arts program. This could be an excellent opportunity to enjoy a night off from cooking whilst also spending some time with others in the College community! We would love to see as many people there as possible.

Year 9 Camp (31 October–4 November)

This week and next will see our Year 9 students busy preparing for their outdoor education camp, which is due to take from 31 October to 4 November in Cooloola National Park. Parents are advised that the time and place for departure on Monday, 31 October is 7.45am from the Bus Turnaround area and that students are expected to return at approximately 3.00pm on Friday, 4 November.

Year 12 Assessment Block (7-11 November)

We wish Year 12 students all the very best as they prepare for their upcoming and final assessment block from 7 to 11 November. They will receive a copy of the exam schedule this week and are asked to see Mrs Fillmore, Dean of Teaching and Learning, as early as possible should there be any issues.

Mt Binga Information Evening (16 November)

The Mt Binga 2016 Information Evening will be held on Wednesday, 16 November in the Ken Thamm Centre Lecture Theatre from 7.00pm. This is an important information-sharing opportunity, which aims to familiarise students and parents with what to expect from the Mt Binga experience. Mt Binga Head, Adrian Ford, will conduct the evening and is looking forward to discussing the types of activities involved in this unique outdoor education program.

Valedictory Dinner (18 November)

On the evening of valedictory, our Year 12 students and their parents are invited to attend the 2016 Valedictory Dinner. For some families this will be a first, whilst for others it closes the chapter of their educational experience at Immanuel. For all, it is a special time to celebrate, to reflect and to remember. Further information has been sent home with all Year 12 students.

2017 Senior Jersey Orders

Orders for the 2017 Senior Jersey will be accepted until Thursday, 27 October. Year 11 students who are yet to place an order are encouraged to do so at their earliest convenience. Rugby 7s – Queensland Q7’s Cup at Ballymore

Last weekend, the ILC U15 Rugby 7’s Team travelled to Brisbane to play in the Queensland Schools Q7’s Cup. The competition involved schools from the Gold Coast, Brisbane and across Queensland and the standard of play was extremely high. The skill level and pace of the games was great to watch. The opportunity to play on Ballymore’s No.1 field was one that they will long remember. I thank the boys for their efforts throughout a long season and the parents who transported the boys to Brisbane and supported them. To coaches Alex Beaumont and Alex Dwyer, thank you for your time and effort in preparing the team for such a major tournament.

Secondary Schools Sports Awards

At this morning’s Sports Awards Assembly we proudly acknowledged a large number of students who have excelled throughout the year. It has been a very exciting year in sport at Immanuel with over fifty teams representing the College in a diverse range of activities; from indoor netball to sailing and all manner of field and court sports.

We also had an opportunity to thank the many people who assist with Immanuel’s sports program as coaches, team managers or simply supporting students in their sporting endeavours. An overview of the award recipients is listed on the following page.

Competition Results – Symphonic Band

As you would have read in Mr Minke’s newsletter column this week, Symphonic Band was awarded Gold at MusicFest! The ensemble’s performance was certainly very pleasing and very musical. The adjudication sheet will be displayed on the whiteboard inside K Block this week for students to read. The comments highlighted our “fine balance”, “great selection” of repertoire and “wonderful presentation”. Our overall comment of performance was as follows.

“This is an exciting ensemble! Lovely balance, a real sense of blend starting to occur. Only occasional phrases that require more attention. Always aim to make huge contrasts between ff and p. Such a full, warm sound!”

Congratulations to Symphonic Band. It was a pleasure to travel with you all to Brisbane. Thank you also to Mr Nelson Oakley for all his assistance in the lead-up to MusicFest and at the competition.

Competition Commitments – Stage Band, MusicFest (Calamvale Community College)

It’s nearly MusicFest time for Stage Band! Students are required to bring food and also money for lunch on the way home. Students will text/call parents when we are leaving the venues to advise the time we are expected to arrive back at the College. If your child does not have a phone, we will contact parents on our staff mobile. Mr Oakley and I are both looking forward to this excursion.

Recital News

On the evening of Tuesday, 11 October the Vivace String Ensemble held a recital in KM8 which was followed by a woodwind and brass recital in the KLT. Two wonderful performances! On Wednesday, 12 October we heard from our talented string students at a violin and viola recital in the KLT. This performance featured students who then sat their formal AMEB music exams over the weekend. All recitals were very well attended and showcased a high level of musical talent. Hello Friends

As the end of the year draws near, I am reminded how fast time passes us by and that if we blink for too long, we miss special things. As my daughter graduates in a few weeks’ time and I prepare for life post year 12, I reflect on her and her older brother’s time here at Immanuel. I recall significant events that have made their journeys memorable.

Those times were when I was able to share moments with both my kids. For Isaac, it was when he joined me in the kitchen for the Gala Opening night of the Immanuel Arts Festival. Watching him prepare and plate up food, as well as help me direct service staff, was a pretty proud moment. Spending time with Stella in the kitchen on one of our Food For Families cook-ups, watching her peel vegetables with intent and concentration, takes me back to when she was a little girl.

The best part about these moments was that I got to share them within the context of our College community. Immanuel has provided our children with an environment filled with experiences and staff who care about achieving positive outcomes for our children. Sharing that with them in a real way tells me more about their progress than report cards or parent teacher interviews. I’m not saying reports or feedback sessions are unimportant, but the satisfaction of achievement through shared participation in what interests them, is like eating vanilla ice-cream with Milo sprinkled on top.

The privilege of being a volunteer at the College for some six to seven years has allowed me to enjoy quite a few of these moments; not only with my children, but many others as well. This year’s Gala Opening was a highlight as Hospitality students came back after walking around the gallery offering food with big grins on their faces. When quizzed they said: “Mr G, people loved the food and they thanked and congratulated us on our efforts to serve them!” The joy and pride on their faces throughout the evening was satisfying to witness and is what inspires and drives me to continue.

Sometimes I feel a little sad and selfish at the same time; I feel that very few get to see these moments and I wish there was a way their parents could share these experiences. I know they can be told afterwards, but there is something special about being “in the moment”. As many of us know, the usual response from a teenager is “Fine” or “Hmmm”.

I invite any parent who would like to share in these moments or share in other contributions made by the P&F, to come and join the throng. The bulk of the commitment needed is to attend a meeting once a month and help make decisions on activities and events that help build our community and allocate funds generated by those events. “Decisions are made by those who turn up.” Help make those decisions, we would love to have representation and input from a broader parent body.

Roster

We still have places available for volunteers on the Term 4 roster if you are able to help. Please refer to the roster on the following page.

Volunteers Required

If you are able to volunteer at either tuckshop, please contact me to arrange a suitable time. We would appreciate your help in the Primary School Tuckshop from 8.30am to1.45pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday to bake and prepare lunches. In the Secondary School Tuckshop help is required to prepare lunches and serve, particularly on Fridays from 8.30am to 2.00pm. We have a core group of volunteers who help all the time and would love to see some new faces. It is fun and a great way to meet other parents.

If you can help, please contact me.

Tuckshop Forum

We are planning to hold a Tuckshop Forum as there have been some changes to the Smart Choices Healthy Food and Drinks Supply Strategy which will be implemented from the beginning of Term 1, 2017. These changes will impact the way food and drinks are classified and may require removing items from our tuckshop menu to remain compliant with the strategy.

http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/healthy/docs/smart-choices-strategy.pdf

We are interested in hearing from all our stakeholders-parents, students, volunteers and staff about both the primary and secondary tuckshop menu choices.

We welcome feedback and this will be a wonderful opportunity to be involved. If you would like more information, please contact me. Many thanks.

Birthday Cupcakes

Place your order for birthday cupcakes via the Flexischools website. Please note, the minimum order is twenty.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

As cupcakes are made at the College, we would appreciate receiving your order five days in advance.

Orders for Primary School students are delivered directly to your child’s classroom. Secondary School students can collect orders from the Secondary School Tuckshop.
