Overview

Lesson Title: I heART youLesson Summary: This lesson explores the use of symbolism in art while focusing on the pop artist Jim Dine. In celebration of Valentine’s Day, this lesson examines the history of the holiday and the meaning behind the heart symbol. The lesson invites students to use color and line in the creation of a mixed-media collaged artwork series using tissue-paper and oil pastels.

Teachers Name: Colleen Duffy and Emily PustayGrade Level: Pre-KAnticipated Class Size: 15Class times: 40 minutes 3 days (3 sessions)Unit Title:Unit Rationale:A.    BIG IDEA (UBD): SymbolismB.     ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS (UBD):A symbol is an image or word that represents something else, and we encounter them every day. Whether it is a big red stop sign, a bright smiling happy face or a loving heart, these symbols are important in controlling aspects of our perception in our lives and in the artwork we create. Symbolism plays a huge role in the art world, allowing the artist to say many things through the images they create. It is very important for our students to be able to recognize and understand the meaning behind common symbols as well as use them in their own work. This will allow them the tools to better understand the visual world that they live in as well as the visual arts.

C. Essential Questions-What are symbols?-What kind of symbols exist?-Why are symbols important?-What role do symbols play in everyday life?-What role do symbols play in art?

A.    BACKGROUND INFORMATION:Prior to this lesson the student’s should have some prior knowledge of the different types of line and basic knowledge of colors. The students will use this knowledge to create a pop art piece comprising of four different hearts. Through this lesson the students will learn what symbolism or a symbol is such as the heart they will be using in their creation.B.     MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT, ROOM ARRANGEMENT:1.      Materials/Equipment:·         “The shape of my heart” book by Mark Sperring ·         Tissue paper squares (aprox. 1 in X 1 in)·         Watered down glue·         Paint brushes·         Paper 5x5 (four per students)·         Oil pastels·         Stencil  (heart)

the instructor TSWBAT recognize and discuss the artwork of pop artist Jim Dine TSWBAT understand and use simple symbols in their artworks

III. LEARNING EXPERIENCE: Day One:Introduction: Teacher introduction/presentations (3 minutes each). From there we will begin by asking ‘Who can tell me what holiday is this week?”.“Valentine’s Day!” “Yes! Are all of you excited for your valentines? Did you know Valentine’s Day originated hundreds of years ago” “Wow really?”“Yes, Every February we celebrate Valentine's Day by giving flowers, candy and cards to those we love but does anyone know the real reason why we celebrate Valentine’s Day”?“No”“We do this in honor of Saint Valentine who was a priest during third century Rome. Does anyone know where Rome is? (Show the students where Rome is on the map in comparison to where we will) At that time there was an Emperor that decided that single men made better soldiers than those that were married. With this thought in mind he outlawed marriage for young men in hopes of building a stronger army. Valentine didn’t think that was fair and chose to marry young couples secretly. Valentine’s actions were very brave therefore we celebrate this holiday to honor St Valentine and his belief in love and marriage.”Body:Read “The shape of my Heart”After reading the Valentine’s day book, we will begin discussing symbols. “Does anyone know what a symbol is?” “A symbol is an image or word that stands for something else.” Hold up picture of a smiley face “Does anyone recognize this symbol? What does it make you

Page 4: colleenduffyteachingportfolio.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewVocab-Symbol- an image or word that represents or stands for something else-St. Valentine- a Roman saint who is celebrated

think of?”“Happiness”Hold up a picture of a “sad face “What does this make you think of”“sad, unhappy”Hold up a picture of a peace sign, “Can anyone tell me what this is a symbol for”“Peace!”“What does everything think the symbol of Valentine’s Day is?”“A Heart”“Yes! For our next project (in the spirit of valentine’s day), we are going to use the symbol of a heart in our artwork and look at a famous artist that used the same symbol in his artwork”Show teacher examples“But first we are going to trace our own hearts to get ready for our projects.”Trace and cut hearts

Closing: Ask “What is a symbol? Who was St Valentine? What symbol are we using in our artwork?”

Day Two:Introduction:Review color recognition with color posters “I know you all went over the color wheel so let’s review to see what you all remember. Can anyone name me a primary color?”“Blue” “Good, what about another there are two more.“Red”“Yes! Who can tell me the last primary color?”“Yellow”“Great! Now let’s see what you remember about secondary colors, what two colors make purple?“Red and blue”“Good, how about the secondary color green, what colors are used to create that?”“Blue and yellow”“That’s right, and lastly who remembers the last secondary color and how it is made?”“Orange and it is made by mixing yellow and red”“Excellent, now that we reviewed our colors, we will now review the different types of lines.” What is a line can anyone tell me?“Something that connects two points” “That is a pretty good definition but the dictionary definition says it is a contour or outline considered as a feature of a composition.” (Show poster of lines and go over each line.) For each line that we go over you have to draw in the air with your imaginary pencil which will be your finger.(Show each line curved, straight, diagonal, zigzag, dashed or dotted, horizontal, wavy, perpendicular, parallel; let them draw each line in the air as you go through each one)“Great the artist we will be learning about uses color, line, and symbol, who can remember from last class what a symbol is?”“A smiley face”“You’re right that is one of the symbols we showed you but the definition of a symbol is a thing

Page 5: colleenduffyteachingportfolio.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewVocab-Symbol- an image or word that represents or stands for something else-St. Valentine- a Roman saint who is celebrated

that represents or makes you think of something else, for example with the smiley face what do you think of ?”“Happy”“Yep and what about the other symbols we learned about,( hold up sad face, do not enter sign, and peace sign one at a time and call on children to answer what the symbol is)“Does anyone remember the symbol we are using in creating our artwork?”“A heart”“I’m glad you all remember that is awesome; now let’s learn about the artist who uses a heart in his work and who we are looking at for inspiration in creating our own work.”

Body:(Introduce Pop Art and Jim Dine with three fold poster.)“The artist we will be using to inspire our artwork is Jim Dine, can everyone say Jim Dine.”“Jim Dine”“Good, Jim Dine is an American Pop artist who still creates artwork today. Pop Art is a certain type of art style that uses symbols that are popular in everyday life as subjects in their artwork. Now, Jim Dine uses the heart symbol, which we just discussed, in a lot of his artwork and we are going to do the same. First, let’s take a look at some of his artwork. What do you see in the examples we’ve printed out for you? Does he use colors in these artworks? What kind? What kind of lines do you see? What are some things that his artwork makes you think of? Think of the heart symbol that we learned about.”“From the examples of his work that are in the middle of your tables you can see that he painted his background which is the area around the hearts, but however we are going to do something a little different. We will be collaging for our heart backgrounds. Does anyone know what collage is?” “No”“It’s ok to collage is to use various materials such as in our case different pieces of tissue paper and stick it to a surface for example paper that I have cut for you all.”

(Demo collaging backgrounds)“I will now show you all how to collage your backgrounds so all eyes and ears on me. You will be using paint brushes and glue that I have watered down so it is thinner and easier to apply with the paint brushes. First hold your paintbrush like this, it is like how you hold your pencil.  Dip your paintbrush in the watered down glue container, about this much glue you need (show the students your paintbrush) then paint the glue on one of your 5x5 inch pieces of paper like this (perform the action so all students can see). The next step is to put down your paint brush and pick up one piece of tissue paper from the tissue paper box on your table and place it where your painted glue on your paper (perform action so all can see). Now you keep repeating those steps until your 5x5 inch paper is filled with tissue paper squares and has no white spots, like this (show them all a finished collaged paper.) As you can see I really didn’t use that much glue to collage this paper so do not go glue crazy. Once you are finished with one 5x5 inch paper do the next one until you finish all four pieces.  “Does anyone have any questions about what you will be doing today? “Each table will be sharing the tissue paper pieces in the box (hand out boxes to each table) There will also be one cup of glue to two students so you all must share that too (pass out cups of glue) Once you get your paint brush you may begin collaging (hand out paint brushes).

Page 6: colleenduffyteachingportfolio.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewVocab-Symbol- an image or word that represents or stands for something else-St. Valentine- a Roman saint who is celebrated

(Start and finish collaging their backgrounds)Show peers finished artwork and say who you will be giving yours to for Valentine’s day.Closing: “What artist did we talk about today?” “What symbol did Jim Dine use in his artwork?” “What art technique did we learn about today?”

Day Three:Intro:“Good morning class! Can anyone tell me what holiday is today?”“Valentine’s Day”“Yes, Happy Valentine’s Day! Does anyone remember from last class what artist we learned about?”“Jim Dine”“Good, and what symbol does Jim Dine use that we are using in our artwork?”“A heart”“Good, and what does the symbol of the heart mean”“Love”“ Good the heart is the symbol for love in our everyday life and it also is the symbol  our artist Jim Dine uses in his artwork.”

Body:“Yesterday you all finished collaging your backgrounds with tissue paper so today the next step is gluing down all four of our hearts to our backgrounds and then decorating them. Raise your hand if you have ever used a glue stick, good well I will show you all how to glue down your hearts.” (Demo of gluing hearts down)“All eyes and ears on me, first you take your glue stick which you all will be given. Take the cap off the glue stick like this (perform action so all students can see) All the glue sticks are high enough to glue your hearts so do not twist it higher. Put glue on th back of your heart like this, (show students and then hold up for them to see.) As you can see the glue is blue and there is just enough glue to go on to the next step. Place your heart on one of your collage paper backgrounds like this and push down with your hands. (Pick up the paper with the glued heart on it ) As you can see the heart is stuck to your background. You will do the same thing for each heart and background paper until you have four finished. Does anyone have any questions about gluing their hearts down? Ok well when you are finished gluing close the cap to your glue stick, place it in the middle of your table, and sit with your hands folded until I explain the next step.  (Pass out glue sticks)   Students will glue hearts on; once they are finished they will sit and wait for the next step.

“Now that we are all finished gluing it’s time for decorating the hearts with oil pastels. First let’s review shapes and lines which are two things you will use for designing your hearts. Raise your hand and name me a shape you have learned about this past week.”“Square, Circle, Rectangle, Star, Heart, Diamond, and Triangle”“Good, let’s review some lines” (use line poster to review lines with students)“Can anyone raise their hand and tell me a line you have learned.”“Straight, curved, zigzag, wavy, diagonal, and parallel.”

Page 7: colleenduffyteachingportfolio.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewVocab-Symbol- an image or word that represents or stands for something else-St. Valentine- a Roman saint who is celebrated

“Great” (Demo how to decorate using pastels, and show teacher examples)“When decorating your hearts you all must draw atleast one different line or shape in each heart you decorate. For example one heart can have a zigzag line on it while your second heart has circles and triangles drawn on it. For my first heart I am going to use three different colors red, blue, and purple; and with them I’m going to draw diagonal lines. ( perform action and then hold it up so all student can  see.) (Show the other examples that I have pre-made) “Here are other examples of designs you can do, there are many possibilities but just make sure that each heart you design has a different line or shape in it. Does anyone have any questions.”Students decorate their four hearts.Closing: “raise your hand and tell me one shape or line you used in your artwork”“Square, triangle, wavy line ect.”“Raise your hand and tell me who you will be giving your valentine to”“Mom, dad, ect.”“What is a symbol?”“An image that stands for something.” “Yes, and what symbol did we use for our art making.”“Heart”“Good and lastly does anyone remember the artist’s name we used for our artwork?”“Jim Dine”“What kind of artist was he?”“Pop Art!”“Great, (line up each table) Happy Valentine’s Day, have a great day!”

D. ADAPTATIONS/MODIFICATIONS:

Deaf/Hard of hearing: For students with trouble hearing or total hearing loss there are many modifications that can be made. For those with some hearing, they can be permitted to sit closer to the teacher during the class and demonstrations and closer to the speakers during presentations/videos with an audio component. Print outs can always be made for visual references. For students that are totally deaf, they will most likely have a sign language interpreter, in which case teacher/interpreter/student collaboration can occur to find methods which would be most beneficial to the students learning. Developmental Delays: Students with developmental delays can receive many adaptations within the classroom. If coordination and material handling is an issue, larger paint brushes, specialized scissors, larger pencils/pastels etc. will always be available. One on one demonstrations can be given as well as small revisions to the project to require less components (if needed) and more time can be given for project completion.

IV. LESSON ANALYSIS:    A. STUDENT ASSESSMENT

Students will be given a check for each class period that they are on task, non-disruptive and participative. They will also be awarded a “Caught being good” if all of these things are met.

B. SELF-REFLECTION               Emily Pustay- Overall I feel the lesson went well, the kids enjoyed the art making experience and reinforced some learning about shapes, colors, line, etc. However if this were to be tough individually it would require many more days and advanced classroom management tools. When teaching the big idea, the art elements and the art history behind the lesson, it is important that you break all the information down enough for the pre-k students to understand

Page 9: colleenduffyteachingportfolio.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewVocab-Symbol- an image or word that represents or stands for something else-St. Valentine- a Roman saint who is celebrated

and give it enough time for it to sink in (or repeat the information as much as necessary). When teaching this lesson again I’d ideally have more time to really drive home learning, the time constraints were definitely the most challenging part of this lesson. While the students had a harder time learning the more advanced concepts of the lesson (mostly due to the time constraints) a majority of them excelled in the technical aspects of the project, and all of them were able to finish the whole project on the due date. Given the opportunity to do this again I’d allow the lesson more time to pan out, to optimize on student learning.

Colleen Duffy- I think the student’s really enjoyed doing this lesson which was nice to see. The book we used “The Shape of My Heart”, was a great book for teaching them and reviewing their knowledge of shapes. I was surprised how much the students knew about shapes before the lesson. If I were alone teaching this lesson it would have definitely taken much more time to finish the artworks due to each student’s need to have some personal assistance whether it was with cutting, tracing, or collaging during the making of the work. Therefore if I were to do this lesson again I would have to consider maybe doing it with older children who could do most of the things on their own like cutting, tracing, or collaging for example possibly kindergarten or first grade instead of pre-k students. Also I could just add time to the lesson so instead of having three days maybe having six would be better. Some students worked faster than others so we should always remember to have a filler or a next step for those students to do while they wait for the other students to catch up. I would have liked to go over the different lines for more time so they could use those lines in their artwork; however, with time constraints we could only do so much with them. When decorating the hearts, we told them all to use different lines and shapes in their hearts but many students did not grasp that concept, so if I were to do this lesson again, I would over emphasize that they need to have at least one line or shape in each heart that they decorate. Overall though the students were engaged and excited with making the project which I thought was awesome.
