ВЫВОД

• Collectivization is a success in Russia.• This is shown in the source where there is an

abundant harvest in the top half of the source.• The tractor depicts the increased usage of

machinery to improve the efficiency of farming• As the title of the source means "Harvest Day" and

the caption means "Collectivization" in Russian respectively, this implies that the abundant yield was due to collectivization.

Page 5: Collectivisation

• Provenance: The source is probably drawn by a Bolshevik propagandist in 1930s.

• Audience: The intended audience is the peasants.• Message: The message is that collectivization

provides a better harvest than the old ways.• Intended Outcome: The intended outcome is to

convince the peasants to agree to collectivization and not rebel against it.

ЦЕЛЬ

Page 6: Collectivisation

• Contextual Knowledge: However, from our contextual knowledge, this source is not totally reliable as the total grain production did not actually increase; rather, it was actually less in 1934 than it had been in 1928.

• One and three-quarter million tons of grain were exported during that same period while over 5 million peasants died of starvation.

• It was actually successful in one sense: greater mechanization was allowed and production was increased.

КОНТЕКСТУАЛЬНЫЕ ЗНАНИЙ

Page 7: Collectivisation

• The purpose of the author is to make the peasants agree willingly to collectivization by using propaganda.

• From our contextual knowledge, we know that the situation in Russia did not improve as depicted in the source.

• Hence, the source is not totally reliable as the propagandist has falsified parts of the situation in order to achieve his purpose.
