    now accept the defenses closing arguments.

    The lawyer for the defense stands up. His hair is slightly disheveled, and his breath smells

    of alcohol. He had noticeably winced at the banging of the gavel. His bleary eyes look

    hopelessly at the jury. He stands silent for several seconds.

    Judge Matthews (clearing his throat pointedly ): Any time now would be lovely.

    The lawyer jumps noticeably at the voice, wincing again. A few of the audience members

    snicker loudly.

    Lawyer (almost begging voice) : All right, all right, no need to shout, Matthy.

    The judge rolls his eyes again, but decides not to make issue of the name. More snickering. The lawyer rubs his bagged eyes, and reaches into his disheveled briefcase for

    a piece of paper, stained on one corner.

    Lawyer : Mem- Members of the jury, the prosecution has ch- charged my client with

    griev- grievous crimes. And yet, they present n- no strong *cough* evidence which w-

    would prove it to be so. They rely en- entirely on evidence whi- which is at best

    circumstantial.

    Wincing on the last word, he looks up from his paper, glancing nervously at the jury.

    Their eyes all bore into his ambivalently, with the notable exception of juror number 5,

    who has fallen asleep and is snoring softly. The room is intoxicatingly hot. The lawyer,

    looking around the court, seems to see something. He stares at it for several seconds.

    People start to exchange looks in befuddlement.

    Lawyer : Nash, stay at the bench. Ill talk to you later.

    Nash : I havent moved.

    Lawyer : No, go sit back down. Now! And Mary, what are you doing here? Im working,

    He hurriedly drags his wig back over his balding head.

    Judge Matthews : I I mean You

    Nash : Your honor, I object to being forced into use of an insane defense
