We want this to be a participatory experience, so please use the question box, located in the Control Panel, to ask questions throughout the webinar. December LeTexier from the Indiana Mentoring Partnership will be queuing up questions to share with panelists during the Q&A portions of the presentation. The questions that we share with our panelists are generally ones that broaden or deepen the conversation. Please keep in mind that we can’t really address specific needs of particular programs or students during our question time. We do try to get to as many questions as we can, but because there are nearly 400 of you signed up for this on this webinar, it isn’t possible to answer them all. Thank you for your understanding. First, to get a sense of who is with us today, we have two short polls: Launch first poll: What is your experience level in the mentoring field? -Beginner -Experienced -Expert Launch second poll: What is your role in the mentoring field? -Practitioner -Researcher -Technical assistance provider -Funder -Other

Campaign Goals

• National Mentoring Month provides an opportunity to celebrate and honor the importance of quality mentoring programs and the role that mentors fill while also recruiting new supporters and volunteers.

• For more than a decade, the effort put into this awareness campaign by local partners has created a groundswell of support and popularity to the point that the terms “mentor” and “mentoring” are ubiquitous in news and pop culture, business and academics.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Thank you again for allowing Midlands Mentoring Partnership to be a part of this webinar. I am so excited to share what we have been doing to increase social media coverage and awareness in Omaha during our Annual Recruitment Campaign, which will run in January 2016 this year, to coincide with National Mentoring Month. A little bit of background information on MMP. Midlands Mentoring Partnership is a backbone organization. Collectively with 13 mentoring organizations in Omaha, MMP works to ensure a quality mentoring experience for both the mentor and the youth. Our goal as a partnership is to bring about community-wide, systemic change that will allow mentoring programs to serve more youth with quality services and increased intentionality.

§ City-wide, multi-agency, month long mentor recruitment campaign

§ Joint Campaign = Cost-Efficient Program Recruitment

§ MMP utilized a strong social media component across 13 agencies

§ More than 700 mentor prospects were recruited

Presenter
Presentation Notes
After years of tracking data we determined the most effective way to recruit mentors was by a one-on-one ask from a specific mentoring program. So, in 2013, MMP initiated Omaha’s first-ever, city-wide, multi-agency, month long mentor-recruitment campaign. By creating our recruitment event, we were able to facilitate this ask on a grander scale for all of the mentoring programs that we collaborate with. The goal of our overall campaign was to provide MMP’s partner agencies with a more cost-efficient way to recruit new mentors with a large scale recruitment event. This campaign included a strong social media component—that I will be talking about– that spanned across all 13 of our member agencies.    During the first year of our campaign, more than 700 mentor prospects were recruited for our mentoring programs—which was absolutely amazing. The second year of the campaign saw similar increases in both mentor prospects, and mentor matches.

Social Media

§ Social media is a crucial component for mentor recruitment

§ Leverage all platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram

Social Media = An Increased Online Voice for Partner Organizations

Presenter
Presentation Notes
During our campaign, we found that the use of social media was a great way to help promote the need for more mentors. We also found that it helped when all of our partner agencies were using the same cohesive message. During our campaign, MMP purchased billboard space, radio spots, and television commercial space. We participated in tv news interviews and radio interviews all while working diligently to increase our presence on social media throughout the entire month. Our campaign was elevated by a strong effort from MMP and its 13 partners to collaborate and leverage all of the social media platforms we participate on, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.   The purpose of our social media campaign has always been to increase the collective online voice of MMP partner organizations, and guess what, it worked! Results of the campaign included increased Twitter and Facebook followers for all of the mentoring partners in Omaha.

Presentation Notes
We also made sure we focused on a thorough and coordinated campaign where partner organizations used the same messaging AND branding to recruit mentors for their own respective organizations. At the start of our campaign, we provide social media training to any of our programs that request more individualized help. We also share a calendar of social media posts (like the one you see) that are centered on the campaign theme. All of our messages are shared with our Partner organizations with the agreement that they too, will post about the recruitment campaign on their social media accounts. We track each partner’s social media throughout the recruitment month to ensure that social media expectations are met with not only original posts to their program pages, but also comments, likes and shares of items posted on the MMP page.   In addition to this, posts are also written with current mentors in mind. These posts are distributed throughout the partner organizations and to current mentors to use as encouragement and inspiration during the campaign on their own personal social media accounts.

Social Media

Our campaign messaging reached approximately 60,000 twitter feeds per week!

Presenter
Presentation Notes
As you can see in a few of our post examples, partners used the same hashtags, #QualityMentoring and #MentorOmahaNow to signify that they are all participating in the same campaign.  We are excited to be adding #MentorIRL to this year’s social media campaign as well, to better align with the national campaign. Additionally, our partners vowed to support and promote one another’s event’s with the common vision that, increased visibility for one organization increases the culture and discussion of mentoring in the community as a whole. We were able to do this by making sure that all of our tweets were scheduled ahead of time, prior to the beginning of the month. We had a new tweet that went out daily Monday thru Friday that our partners would retweet and like throughout the week. In 2014 alone, our campaign messaging reached approximately 60,000 twitter feeds per week!

Social Media

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Not only did MMP focus on twitter, but we also worked very hard to ensure that every aspect of our social media was thought through. Facebook, being one of the most widely used social media platforms by our programs, was one that we made sure to focus on. A lot of our focus went into making sure that our facebook pages were all cohesive. We utilized custom Facebook cover images and profile pictures that were made in the style of the campaign imagery. We made sure that all of these images were shared with all of our partner organizations as well as current mentors to expand our reach beyond the MMP page. Because of our deliberate planning, MMP was able to increase our Facebook “likes” by 220% during the first campaign in 2013, and by over 40% in 2014.

Social Media

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Another aspect to our social media that has worked in our favor collaboratively is our MentorOmahaNow.org site. All mentor recruitment traffic is directed to this page during our annual campaign month. This link is provided to all of our mentoring programs, which they then place on their various social media outlets such as facebook, twitter or their program website. The MentorOmahaNow link actually takes you to a part of our MMPOmaha.org website and is designed specifically for potential mentors. So, once an interested individual goes to the site, they can find out more about what mentoring is, the different types of mentoring programs we have available, and how they can sign up to become a mentor. Once on the site, they are also offered a chance to take a short 2 minute survey that will ask them basic questions about their likes in regards to mentoring. They will get questions that ask not only your gender and age range, but also your ideal mentoring experience (one to one, a team environment, or together with a spouse). It will also ask whether you prefer school based or community based for your mentoring experience, along with a few other questions that will narrow down your choices. All of our programs are assigned a series of attributes for this survey. The survey will then ask questions and then shows results OR hides results based on these attributes. This will ultimately suggest the best program for the prospective mentors lifestyle and availability.

Social Media

Presenter
Presentation Notes
One last piece of social media that MMP works hard to produce during our annual recruitment campaign and National Mentoring month are our blog posts for our mmpomaha.org website. We work hard to post an informative blog post weekly during our recruitment campaign and also weekly during national mentoring month. These posts could be anything from welcoming everyone to this year’s recruitment event, to what are some ways to get creative and thank your mentor. MMP strives to utilize all avenues when trying to reach those that may be considering becoming a mentor. All of our blog posts are then shared on our various social media outlets for programs to share, like and comment on.

Social Media

§ Increased website hits

§ Increased number of social media followers

§ Increased number of new mentors

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The overall results for our social media campaign in both 2013 and 2014 have been a win/win for every single participating organization that partners with MMP. In the last 2 years, every agency has increased their web site hits, increased their number of social media followers, and increased their number of new mentors.   This is just one small, yet amazing example of how the power of nonprofits working together and using their collective online voice can support the mission of their agencies AND can have a major impact on the community in a short frame of time. Thank you.

Presentation Notes
Mentoring agencies often struggle with ideas on how to promote their program in order to bring awareness. Think outside of the box on the many different ways to take advantage of this national platform in order to accomplish your goal. Our agency has developed a plan of action that includes timeline, stats, pictures, events, stories etc. to help promote our agency. The end result of course of planning and being prepared for this great occasion is greater chances of exposure for your agencies and the children you serve. And more importantly, these efforts can lead to growth in mentors, mentees, partners and my favorite- potential donors. Obviously, if you’re here today – you are planning to make the most of this month for your organization. I hope that the information that I am sharing with you will assist you in some way.

Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Memphis Grizzlies Dinner and a Game

Presenter
Presentation Notes
“Dinner and a Game” event. We had about 300 individuals (mentors and mentees) enjoy a game and a dinner while cheering the team to victory. The children made signs. The Grizzlies invited two mentoring relationships to the floor at half time for recognition. One lucky male mentoring relationship was invited to speak on the Grizzlies team’s radio station prior to the game about their experience. Big Brother Najja and Little Brother Torian then join the owner courtside to watch the game up close and person. I know this is a great finale. The opportunity presented itself and in a moment’s notice and we were prepare to answer the call because of our planning. The story and picture was posted on the Grizzlies website Twitter account and website. It was Great!!!

Recruitment Event Best Practices

• Outreach and planning - Plan an activity that can be

the finale for all of the hard work and planning for this month.• Promotion - Use social media and traditional media

connections to gain interest.

• Execution - Think outside of the box and be creative!

• Follow up – Be sure to connect with those who attended the event or showed interest online.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Out of a round table discussion with the staff, the agency’s goals for mentoring month are determined. Of course the message will always be a need for mentees and mentors. But, stop to think and prepare for other activities, stories, highlights and events that might bring fortune to your program. Our agency tries to collaborate with partners to execute events whenever the opportunity presents itself. Last year we were able to collaborate with the Memphis Grizzlies to do a special event. Do not be afraid to move away from your vintage social networking mediums to bring exposure to your organization. We have a great staff that work really hard to build and maintain partnerships to assist with our goal of media exposure. The staff strategically work together to develop a timeline and agenda of information to be disseminated with instructions on how and when to release the information. This includes… •Television psa, mentoring relationship spotlight, event spotlight •Ads and/or special stories •Radio psa; parent or mentor spotlight If you said that you participated in Mentoring Month 2015- Outstanding!!! If you did not, congratulations for taking the first steps for preparing for Mentoring Month 2016! I hope this information was helpful.
