DIVISION 2 PEN PALS

Division 2 recently received their final letters from Kushiro Japan before their grade 6 pen pals move on to junior high school. After organizing the oppor-tunity last year, members of the Kushiro Board of Education personally deliv-ered the first set of letters in July 2015 when they toured Sperling and division 2 students sent their first replies in early September. Aside from letters, stu-dents made video introductions and exchanged small gifts over the course of the year. The experience has given the students an inside look into a Japanese elementary school and made a connection with children from Burnaby’s sister city. ありがとう釧路市立中央小学校.

Burnaby Festival of Dance 2014

Burnaby District hosts a dance festival every year at Burnaby Mountain Second-ary School. On Monday, May 2 Sperling dazzled the Burnaby audience with two primary performances. Mrs. Schiffo’s class danced to Europe’s “The Final Countdown” and Mme Therrien’s class danced to the song “Suis-moi”. Both classes danced with lots of Sperling Spir-it and made it a night to remember. A big thank you goes out to the classroom teachers, Mrs. Hintersteininger, Mrs, Lu-cia Faccone and Marina Faccone for spending so much time practising and perfecting the dances with our primary students. We are already looking for-ward to next year!

Congratulations Gr. 7 Dragonboaters! On Saturday, May 28th Grade 7 Dragonboaters participated in a regatta at Burnaby Lake. It was a

soggy Saturday and the students displayed great spirit and placed 2nd. Bravo!

Join the Summer Reading Club at Burnaby Public Library!

Children who read over the summer do better in school, and libraries across BC are here to help. When kids sign up for a Summer Reading Club, they receive a reading calendar, a reading record, a book mark and stickers. By reading for just 15 minutes a day for 50 days, readers will be rewarded with the highly coveted Summer Reading Club med-al. Registration starts Monday, June 13th and continues until the mid-dle of July. PLUS: During the summer, the library offers fun and creative pro-grams, extended loans for travelers, and book recommendations FAQs: Can my child register if we’re not here in the summer? Yes. Registration materials can be picked up at the beginning of the sum-mer and reading can be done anywhere. Medals will be available until the end of September. What if my child isn’t reading yet? Children of all ages and reading levels are welcome. Younger children can listen to stories, and we have books and suggestions to help beginners too. We love matching kids with books!

What is "I Love Water Polo"? "I Love Water Polo" (ILWP) is Water Polo Canada’s introductory, grass roots water polo program for boys and girls ages 8-12 (although easily adaptable for younger or older age groups, or even adults). In a learn-to-play environment, similar to swimming lessons, participants discover the game of water polo, and the basic skills involved in aquatic sports. The ILWP program also helps to enhance the participants swimming, balance, and coordination skills. No prior water polo experience is required. The only pre-requisite is that participants should be able to swim one width of the pool.

Tailor made teaching material for local students. (Creative with the art therapy approach with English translation, so students learn easily) Language is a critical foundation for children and exposes them to rich and diverse culture and allows them to embrace multiculturalism. As Chinese language and culture are getting more important to the world, we are equipping the students with skills and knowledge which they will find important to their lives. Also, it is fun for the kids to learn with their friends at their own school. The most important aspect is to learn to be a positive person. Alice Chan, Specialist of Children development for 30 years; Teaching in Vancouver for 18 years.
