As always, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Alan Taylor and his Stirling University side to Home Park this afternoon. The way the fixtures have panned out means that we again go head to head in the league just a fortnight after our last encounter at their place. We won that day on a sodden afternoon, but following a defeat last week against Tynecastle, we must forget about this setback and go again to get our season back on track. The Students remain at the top of the Premier Division and the league doesn’t tend to lie. They are a very good footballing side and very energetic, as you would expect with a University team, so we will need to be focused from start to finish today and not switch off. They had a strange result last weekend losing 6 – 1 at Craigroyston so both sides are looking for a vastly improved performance in today’s game. Last week was one of the lowest moments in my two years at the club. Although I was impressed with Tynecastle and the way that they went about their business, I felt we just didn’t get going and a lot of the bad situations that we got ourselves into could have been prevented. We have talked about it as a group this week and hopefully the feeling my lads had at the final whistle can be used as an incentive to improve things on the park. Ahead of this programme going to print there are a few players definitely out of today’s match. Lee Lambert (work), Kieran Ainslie (suspension), Jonny Simpson (ankle), Sean Simpson (ankle), Josh McLeod (ankle) and Tomie Cannon (work) are all unavailable which means utilising the squad as best I can. On the plus side we have goalkeeper Mark Walters returning from a broken foot which will give everyone a boost. Lawrie Cannon is back in the squad after missing last week’s defeat and Craig Heugh is also available after being on holiday. I have recalled Greg McCrudden from his loan spell at Eyemouth United and have also been forced to bring back Richard Baxendale from his loan at Coldstream Amateurs to bolster the bench for this one. I hope you have wrapped up warm and as always enjoy the match!

Kieran Ainslie got his marching orders.

Coldstream seem to be all at See

Ousman See's third hat-trick of the season ensured Stephen McKenzie's Tynecastle side left Home Park victorious as well as gaining momentum for a title challenge in the second half of the campaign. Coldstream on the other hand, can count this as an off day with nothing going right from the first whistle to the last. On a perishingly cold afternoon, the visitors looked sharp immediately from the kick-off and could of gone ahead through See early on, Travis getting his toe end to the ball to turn it behind for a corner and prevent a tap in. At the other end, Lee Lambert went close from distance although Tynecastle goalkeeper Paul Cadger did not look too concerned as it bounced past his post. The side in maroon gradually took control of the match and thoroughly deserved their lead ten minutes in - Tony Muir dropping deep to find See, who turned to setup former Livingston player Dean Cummings, who fired past Lucas Glasper in the Streamers goal. The

lead, however was short lived as an accurate inswinging free kick from Lambert found Kieran Ainslie, who lost his marker to nod home the equaliser. As the half went on, Tynecastle continued to look the sharper and threatened down both flanks with pace and directness. It was from a quick break away that they utilised this and regained the lead. A Gary Wales cross evading everyone to set the Edinburgh side away. Three passes later and a ball was rolled across the six yard line from the left flank and easily converted by See. Muir then went close with an acrobatic overhead kick before Wales cleared another off the line for Coldstream to keep them in the game at the interval. Manager Andrew Gibson's hopes of getting back into the match were extinguished moments into the second half, See spinning his marker before slotting home his second, despite Michael Allan's best efforts to keep the ball out on the goal line. Talisman John Crawford was quickly introduced as the home side searched for goals and the deficit could have been reduced moments later had Aaron Punton converted a free header from another majestic set piece from Lambert. The same player almost scored the goal of the game from long range too, Cadger scrambling across his goal to palm it away. With the game now stretched, more goals looked likely and it was Tynecastle who were to score again. Muir went close with a left footed shot before a horrific challenge in the area from Ainslie on Cummings resulted in a straight red for the skipper and a spot kick, which See stepped up to take, wrong footing Glasper to find the corner of the net for his sixteenth goal of the season. Coldstream battled on, but it was damage limitation in truth as they attempted to keep the opponents goal tally to a minimum. Coldstream: Glasper, Birkett, Allan, Ainslie (C) , Travis, Wales, Brown, Punton, Hebdon, Lambert, S. Simpson. SUBS - Turner, Crawford, Chisholm.

The sides last met just a fortnight ago with the Streamers running out 2 – 3 on a very wet afternoon. A fantastic goal from Aaron Punton won the match for Coldstream that day, but despite this set back, the Students remain the team to catch and currently sit at the summit of the East of Scotland Premier Division on nineteen points.

Stirling University F.C. are a football club who play in the Lowland Football League. They were admitted to the First Division of the East of Scotland Football League in 2008 after Berwick Rangers withdrew their reserve team but were admitted to the new Lowland League in 2013. The club operates five teams which compete in a combination of British University competitions and in senior and amateur leagues across Scotland. The University of Stirling deliver a High Performance Football Programme

which provides players to the first team. As part of this programme, students can be offered football scholarships to study for a degree and play football at the University. The football scholarship programme is named after Craig Gowans, a talented Falkirk player who died in 2005 while training at the University. The 2009-10 season was one of great success for the students, as they won the First Division title in only the team’s second season in the East of Scotland League. They also won the Scottish Universities Championship and reached the King Cup final, losing to East of Scotland Premier Division champions Spartans 0 - 2 at Ferguson Park, Rosewell. In the 2010-11 season, in their first season in the East of Scotland Premier Division, the students secured a second place finish and also suffered defeat in the King Cup final at the hands of Spartans at the Falkirk Stadium. They were successful in the Alex Jack Cup, winning the final 7 - 0 against Lothian Thistle at the Falkirk Stadium. In 2012, Stirling University again won the Alex Jack Cup, beating Gretna 2008 in the final. In March 2012, the university's first year scholar Stephen Hoyle left the programme to sign for ASB Premiership side Hawke's Bay United in New Zealand. Stirling University had a remarkable 2011-12 season, bringing three trophies back to the University, including the East of Scotland Premier Division title for the first time. This saw the University compete in the 2012-13 Scottish Cup, participating in the Scottish Cup for the first time in the club's history. They were drawn against Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic in the second round, finally losing 0 – 1 to their Junior Super League opponents. At the end of the 2012-13 season, goalkeeper Kevin Walker left the University to sign a one year professional contract with Scottish Championship side Livingston. When it was announced in 2013 that Stirling University would be admitted to the Lowland League, it was also announced that they would use Stirling Albion's Forthbank Stadium for their home fixtures.

Stirling University celebrate a recent goal against Northumbria University.

The East of Scotland Football League is delighted to announce that Gary Aitchison has been appointed to take on the role of Select Team head coach. Gary has been involved in the East of Scotland scene for many years and has had spells managing Whitehill Welfare, Civil Service Strollers and, latterly, Craigroyston. The position became vacant after former manager Michael Renwick left to pursue a career in America. Aitchison told EOSFL.com: “I am honoured to be appointed to take up the role, I have been away from my last club for a few months and when I got the phone call I was delighted, I am really buzzing and looking forward to getting it all started.”

Gary Aitchison takes up select team role

“I have spoken to a few folk to come in and join me and so far the response has been really positive. I am really looking forward to the challenge and I have some ideas that I will discuss with the league committee over the course of the weekend and we will take it from there.” League committee member Raleigh Gowrie said: “The select team is something that we reinvigorated last season and we have invested time and money in setting it up, it remains an important part of the East of Scotland League. Gary has great credentials and I am looking forward to working with him in the future.” .

The club can confirm that reports suggesting Hangover star Alan Garner (Zach Galifianakis) was playing for us against Tynecastle last Saturday were simply rumours and completely fabricated. Various stories arose on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter over the following days, but it turns out that it was our very own Robin Brown, often hungover, who was sporting 'the beard' and not the Hollywood star! In a month where most men are growing a moustache for the fantastic 'Movember' cause, Robin has decided to go for the full caveman look and looks like he has been living in the woods for a month! He hasn't decided to wear a satchel like Garner just yet, but don't be surprised if he falls into a carbon copy of the character soon and ditches the official club bag! The big question now is when will his face see a shaver again or is the next target to look like Tom Hanks in Castaway?! "Wilson...!!!“ After returning to the club after a spell in America, Brown is gradually getting his fitness levels up and game time will help with this over the coming weeks.

PLAYERSTATISTICS

@cstreamfc1895 11

Name: John Crawford Date of Birth: 24/10/1986 Born: Edinburgh Previous Club(s): Berwick Rangers, Dunbar United, Eyemouth United Joined Coldstream: August ‘11 Coldstream Debut: Peebles (a) - August ‘11 Sponsor: Darren Amers About: John is one of the most prolific goal scorers in East of Scotland football and regularly hits astonishing goal tallys come the end of the season. Notching 43 goals in 2011/12, he won the EoS First Division golden boot - something that is not unfamiliar to the target man. A traditional British forward in terms of his size and strength, 'Coco' is powerful in the air and holds the ball up impressively on the deck, which takes the pressure off the Streamers defence. A predator in the box, John has scored over 200 goals in senior football and doesn't look like he will be stopping there. Captain at the club and one of the more senior members of the squad, Crawford leads by example and is a born winner.

COLDSTREAMHISTORY

Formed almost 118 years ago, Coldstream Football Club is one of the oldest football clubs in Scotland, creating a prestigious history of which it can be proud. It was in 1895 that the ‘Streamers’ were formed and since then the club has always strived to improve, both on and off the pitch, in order to remain as one of the top sides in the Borders and East of Scotland setup. The main trophies lifted by the men in blue over the years have been those of the Scottish Amateur Cup (1924), the Borders Cup (1925), the Kings Cup (1967) and the Scottish Qualifying Cup (1947 & 1966).

Over the years many players produced by Coldstream have moved on to grace the professional game – Lennie Melrose signed for Heart of Midlothian in 1910 with Bobby Johnston and Frankie Bryson doing the same in the early 1930’s. Tommy Ledgerwood left for Partick Thistle in 1946 with Hick Ledgerwood (York City), Jocky Ford (Tottenham Hotspur) and Billy Clazie (Berwick Rangers) also moving up in the game. Eric Tait, who went on to captain Berwick Rangers when they were in the Scottish First Division almost twenty five years ago is another who had talent and was snapped up by a bigger club. Locals Willie Scott, Willie Rutherford, Billy Kerse, George Walker, John Scott and Bob Mackenzie have all had long associations with the club over the years and have helped to take it forward. The opening of the current pavilion in 1991 was also down to a man who oozed passion for Coldstream Football Club, the late Jim Patterson. His photo is there for all to see as you enter the ‘Pivvy’ at Home Park. The historic opening saw Ossie Ardilles, the then Newcastle United manager, bring a strong side up to Coldstream – unfortunately the game ended in a 0 – 1 victory for the magpies.

‘The Promotion Season’ - 2012/13.

@cstreamfc1895 13

In more recent times, the Streamers have spent time in both of the East of Scotland divisions and following a superb 2012/13 season, they now find themselves back in the top flight after being promoted behind Champions Craigroyston under the guidance of Manager and former player Andrew Gibson, who has helped turn fortunes around in just two seasons, helping to get the club back on track.

It is through the latter that the club have the privilege of playing in Scotland’s premier cup competition each season – the Scottish Cup. Coldstream are drawn out in the preliminary rounds each August hoping for a run or famous scalp – which, over the years has provided endless stories and memories for locals, many of which can still be heard to this day should you venture into any of the town’s pubs.
