Therefore, it is significantly 45 important whether the development of AI in later period 46 will be able to break through the limitation of data. 47 Thus, in this paper, we propose a new human-centered 48 computing with cognitive intelligence on cloud. As shown 49 in Fig. 1, the human-centered cognitive cycle includes 50 machine, cyberspace and human. The machine means hard- 51 ware facilities such as computer network, devices for basic 52 communication architecture, terminal devices and robots. 53 While cyberspace means the space composed of informa- 54 tion that is stored in virtual networks. ABSTRACT With the development of network-enabled sensors and artificial intelligence algorithms, varioushuman-centered smart systems are proposed to provide services with higher quality, such as smart healthcare,affective interaction, and autonomous driving. Considering cognitive computing is an indispensabletechnology to develop these smart systems, this paper proposes human-centered computing assisted bycognitive computing and cloud computing. First, we provide a comprehensive investigation of cognitivecomputing, including its evolution from knowledge discovery, cognitive science, and big data. I. INTRODUCTION12

In recent years, with the rapid development in computer soft-13

ware and hardware technologies, big data and the artificial14

intelligence (AI), cognitive computing has received consid-15

erable attention in both academic and industry. In the aca-16

demic, the IEEE Technical Activity for cognitive computing17

defines it as ‘‘an interdisciplinary research and application18

field’’, which ‘‘uses methods from psychology, biology, sig-19

nal processing, physics, information theory,mathematics, and20

statistics’’ in an attempt to construct ‘‘machines that will21

have reasoning abilities analogous to a human brain’’. In22

the industry, the IBM corporation developed the cognitive23

system, i.e., Waston, which could process and reason about24

natural language and learn from documents without supervi-25

sion. Those works focus on strong AI, and the intelligence26

of these systems is based on the diverse data provided by27

cyberspace [1], [2].28

However, modern cognitive computing still falls short of29

realizing human-like intelligence. Specifically, current tech-30

nology advance on cognitive computing faces the following31

challenges:32

• Most of the existing industrialized AI systems are still33

preliminary AI-based applications. Furthermore, a lot of34

applications based on neural network and deep-learning 35

framework, such as Smart City [3]–[6], Smart Health- 36

care [7]–[9], Smart Home [10]–[12] and Smart Trans- 37

portation [13], [14], have not yet extended sufficiently to 38

the realm of spirit and does not focus on human-centered 39

intrinsic information such as emotions and mentality. 40

• Without continuous provisionings of big data, knowl- 41

edge is difficult to be sustainably discovered for the 42

improvement of machine intelligence. Furthermore, 43

the human expectation on the ability of machine is 44

getting higher and higher. Therefore, it is significantly 45

important whether the development of AI in later period 46

will be able to break through the limitation of data. 47

Thus, in this paper, we propose a new human-centered 48

computing with cognitive intelligence on cloud. As shown 49

and machine at a deep algorithmic level using the data in57

cyber space. The two features of human-centered cognitive58

computing will not only result in the interaction among59

human, machine and cyberspace, but also break through the60

dependency of machine learning on data. Therefore, this61

new cognitive computing provides an effective pathway for62

machine to explore the internal needs of human and enable63

it to produce more profound understanding of cognition on64

human in order to provide more intelligent cognitive service65

for the user.66

Specifically, the main contributions of this paper include:67

• We propose a new human-centered cognitive computing68

architecture, which includes Internet of Things (IoT),69

big data analysis and cloud computing. Correspond-70

ingly, information collection, analysis and storage are71

supported.72

• We give the enabling technologies in cognitive com-73

puting, which includes reinforcement learning and deep74

learning. Using these techniques, the machine has suffi-75

ciently discovered the value of existing cyberspace data.76

Furthermore, we introduce that if cognitive computing77

intends to further enhance machine intelligence, both78

existing data analysis and the innovative methods of79

breaking through the data limitation are required.80

• We introduce three typical technologies to be integrated81

with human-centered cognitive computing, including82

robotics, emotional communication system and medical83

cognitive system. From these integrations, we expect84

that the data fusion and the interaction among human,85

machine and cyberspace enable the machine to provide86

more intelligent services to human.87

The remainder of this article is organized as follows.88

Section II introduces the evolution of cognitive computing.89

The system architecture of cognitive computing are described90

in Section III, the key technologies of cognitive comput- 91

ing are presented in Section IV and the applications based 92

on human-centered cognitive computing are illustrated in 93

Section V. Finally, Section VI concludes this paper. 94

II. THE EVOLUTION OF COGNITIVE COMPUTING 95

In middle and later periods of the 20th century, the trend 96

of behaviorism gradually declined. The rapid development 97

of linguistics, information theory and data science as well 98

as the popularization of computer technologies have brought 99

an impressive and thought-provoking cognitive revolution. 100

Cognitive Science has emerged, which is an interdisciplinary 101

subject that studies the circulation and treatment of informa- 102

tion in human brain. Cognitive scientists explore mental abil- 103

ity of human beings through observation on aspects such as 104

language, perception, memory, attention, reasoning and emo- 105

tion [15]. The cognitive process of human beings is mainly 106

reflected on the following two stages. Firstly, people become 107

aware of ambient physical environments through their own 108

perceptive sense organs such as skin, eyes and ears, etc., 109

by which the external information is obtained as input. Sec- 110

ondly, the input is transmitted to brain through nerves for 111

complicated processing such as storage, analysis and learn- 112

ing. The processing results are fed back to various body 113

parts through nervous system and then each part produces 114

appropriate behavior response. Thus, a complete closed loop 115

that covers decision-making and action is formed. Therefore, 116

when a newborn is cognizing the world, constant communi- 117

cations with outer world are required to obtain various infor- 118

mation on external environments. In the meantime, he or she 119

gradually establishes his or her own cognitive system by using 120

the obtained information and feedback. Since the cognitive 121

system is extremely complex, it is essential to use the tools 122

and the methods from various subjects, in order to conduct 123

multi-dimensional [16], all-around and in-depth studies for124

a better understand the cognitive system. Therefore, cogni-125

tive science crosses many subjects and research fields such126

as linguistics, psychology, AI, philosophy, neuroscience and127

anthropology. In a manner of speaking, the achievements128

obtained by researchers in the field of cognitive science up to129

now are closely related to interdisciplinary research methods.130

Fig. 2 shows the evolution process of cognitive computing.131

Big data analysis and cognitive computing are two different132

technologies that are derived from data science. As for big133

data analysis, it is emphasized that the data processed should134

be characterized by the ‘‘5V’’ features of big data [17]. Cog-135

nitive computing focuses more on breakthrough in process-136

ing methods. In cognitive computing, the data processed are137

not necessarily big data. Just like human brain, the limited138

memory does not affect the cognition of image information.139

Actually, the image processing by human brain is extremely140

efficient. Cognitive computing tends to develop algorithms by141

utilizing the theories in cognitive science. Finally, it enables142

a machine to possess certain degree of brain-like cognitive143

intelligence [18]. Brain-like computing aims to enable the144

computers to understand and cognize the objective world145

from the perspective of human thinking. In order to under-146

stand the need of human beings, it is critical to strengthen147

the cognition of machine through cognitive computing [19].148

Thus, the intelligence and decision-making ability ofmachine149

needs to be improved. Thereinto, especially in allusion to150

problems that involve complicated emotions and reasoning,151

cognitive computing will far exceed the traditional machine152

learning. When cognitive computing is embedded into IoT,153

the smart IoT system may assist human beings in decision-154

making and provide critical suggestions [1]. Cognitive155

technologies can also be integrated with information com-156

munication system in order to spawn novel cognitive radio157

networks [20]. For instance, in [21], Tian et al., propose the158

first application of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) 159

transmissions based on robust optimized cognitive radio to 160

vehicular networks to enhance the performance of vehicular 161

networks. If the data processed by cognitive computing are 162

big data, then both cognitive computing and big data analysis 163

are used at the same time. 164

III. COGNITIVE COMPUTING ARCHITECTURE 165

Fig. 3 shows the system architecture of cognitive computing. 166

With the support of underlying technologies such as 5G net- 167

work [22], robotics and deep learning along with IoT/cloud 168

infrastructures, tasks involving human-machine interaction, 169

voice recognition and computer vision will be implemented 170

in a large scale. The upper applications supported can be 171

health supervision, cognitive healthcare, smart city, smart 172

transportation and scientific experiments. Thereinto, each 173

layer in the system architecture is accompanied by corre- 174

sponding technological challenges and system requirements. 175

Therefore, the relevance between cognitive computing and 176

each layer is studied and discussed in detail in this paper. 177

A. COGNITIVE COMPUTING AND INTERNET OF THINGS 178

It is clear from above-description that cognitive computing is 179

based on information. Communication field emphasizes on 180

transmission of information, while computer realm empha- 181

sizes on utilization of information. In actual cognitive com- 182

puting applications, the information is mainly represented by 183

data including various structured and unstructured data. The 184

IoT [23] collects diverse real-time valuable information of 185

objects’ concerns in objective world, forms a giant network 186

through Internet and realizes interconnection among massive 187

sensing devices in order to make co-fusion between data 188

world and physical world [24]. Currently, some advanced 189

distributed information fusion technologies, such as [25], can 190

also be employed to improve the accuracy of the sensed 191

large-scale network information. The IoT firstly obtains192

information related to monitored objects through perception193

technologies such as RFID and wireless sensor, satellite194

positioning and positioning through WiFi and fingerprint.195

Secondly, it spreads relevant information in the network196

using various efficient means of communication and con-197

ducts sharing and integration. Finally, it conducts analysis198

and processing of information using the intelligent computing199

technologies such as cloud computing, machine learning and200

data mining to realize intelligentized decision-making and201

control in physical fusion system of information. The IoT202

realizes the perception and transmission of information. The203

popularization and extensive use of IoT will generate more204

and more data that will provide important information source205

for realization of cognitive computing. In turn, as a new type206

of computing mode, the cognitive computing will provide207

means of practice with higher and better energy efficiency208

for data perception and collection in IoT.209

B. COGNITIVE COMPUTING AND BIG DATA ANALYSIS210

The continuous increase of information and the constant211

improvement in computing power of machine are irre-212

versible obvious in the era of big data [26]. Compared213

with the increase in traditional structured data, the increase214

in unstructured data such as data in social media and in215

mobile internet is evergrowing exponentially. Structured and216

unstructured data compose cognitive big data, the feature217

of which can be represented by 5V, i.e., volume (large218

volume), velocity (rapid change and high velocity), vari-219

ety, value (value-oriented) and veracity. In the meantime,220

these features cause many problems during the analysis and221

processing of information. However, big data analysis and222

cognitive computing provide efficient solutions. We intro-223

duce the connection and differences between big data analysis224

and cognitive computing.225

Cognitive computing mimics human senses. One connec- 226

tion between big data analysis and cognitive computing is 227

human’s big data thinking. The experience constantly accu- 228

mulates during the life of human being. Once the information 229

quantity of various experience become large, he or she may 230

possess human’s big data thinking, which is hierarchical 231

as deep learning. The first level is the concern about the 232

improvement in material life and environment. The second 233

level is pursuing spiritual culture and the third level is con- 234

cerned with the meaning of life. The amount of people in 235

top level is the least. Currently, the thinking that is simulated 236

by machine intelligence mainly focuses on first and second 237

level to concern the living standard and the emotional state of 238

human. The corresponding applications are: health monitor- 239

ing, smart healthcare, smart home, smart city and emotional 240

care [27]–[29]. The third level is further deep that concerns 241

themeaning of life and puts forward personalized suggestions 242

for development direction in the life of user to help the user 243

realize happy but more meaningful life. It cannot be done 244

by machines at present and is a great challenge in artificial 245

intelligence in future. Under the circumstance where data set 246

complies with features of big data, the most direct way to 247

analyze and process the data is to adopt the existingmethod of 248

machine learning [30]. However, data processing technique 249

with ‘‘brain-like’’ computing is the key point for distinguish- 250

ing the big data analysis from cognitive computing. The 251

method that more emphasizes on potential of value for data 252

should be employed in order to enable the machine to achieve 253

the third level by cognizing the connotation of data and the 254

image information contained in these data, and understanding 255

the ambient information just as human being does. 256

One differences between big data analysis and cognitive 257

computing is data size. The big data analysis in allusion to 258

some data set is not necessarily cognitive computing. The 259

thinking of big data emphasizes on mining the value and 260

obtaining the insight from large volume of data.Without large261

volume of data as base, the accuracy and the reliability of262

prediction cannot be guaranteed. Considering the accumu-263

lation of data in volume in cognitive computing does not264

mean relying on data size. Based on cognition and judgement265

like human brain, the cognitive computing tries to solve the266

problems of fuzziness and uncertainty in biological system.267

Thus realizes various degrees of processes such as cognition,268

memory, learning, thinking and problem solving. For exam-269

ple, in real life, a child only needs a few times to learn to know270

a person. Although, the data size is not large enough but the271

cognitive computing can still be employed to process the data.272

As for common people and domain experts, it is assumed273

that the data are identical but the profundity of knowledge274

obtained by common people may differ from that obtained275

by domain experts. Since the height of thinking is different,276

the angle to interpret the data may also be different. The277

machine can mine more hidden meaning from limited data278

using cognitive computing [31].279

Furthermore, the combination of cognitive computing and280

big data will bring ‘‘win-win’’ benefits. The cognitive com-281

puting is inspired by learning process of human. Human282

beings only require a very short period of time to cognize283

an image and after that they can easily distinguish cat from284

dog and etc. The traditional big data can achieve this sim-285

ple function of human after large amount of training. For286

example, though ‘‘Google Photos’’ can distinguish cat from287

dog by learning a lot of pictures [32]. However, it cannot288

recognize the different varieties of cat. In addition, there is289

big redundancy for numerous volumes of data and these data290

will occupy massive storage space. The cognitive computing291

prefers utilization of a pathway that is more light and conve-292

nient than big data analysis. It mines universality and value293

of data and after acquiring cognitive intelligence, it makes the294

big data analysis to not only utilize ‘‘brute computing force’’.295

Before the era of big data, the cognitive computing had not296

been sufficiently studied. At present, the rise of AI and the297

support of sufficient computing resources on cloud provide298

advantages for development of cognitive computing [33] and299

make it possible for machine to interpret and mine the impli-300

cation of data from angle of cognizing internal needs of user.301

C. COGNITIVE COMPUTING AND CLOUD COMPUTING302

Cloud computing virtualizes the computing, storage and303

band width. Thus, it reduces the deployment cost for soft-304

ware services and provides support for industrialization305

as well as promotion of application cognitive comput-306

ing [34]. Moreover, the strong computing and storage capac-307

ity of cloud computing provide dynamical, flexible, virtual,308

shared and efficient computing resource services to cognitive309

computing [35].310

For large amount of data information generated in real life,311

after big data analysis is conducted on platform of cloud com-312

puting, the technologies such asmachine learning are adopted313

to conduct mining for data and the results are applied in314

different fields. The different categories of information315

correspond to different processing technologies. For exam- 316

ple, the literal information and the pictorial information cor- 317

respond to natural language processing and machine vision, 318

respectively. The cognitive service of IBM for language and 319

cognitive computing application of Google emphasize on 320

realization of brain-like cognition and judgement by deploy- 321

ing cloud service model to provide accurate assistance in 322

decision-making. Cloud computing and IoT provide cogni- 323

tive computing with software and hardware basis [36], while 324

big data analysis provides methods and thinking for discover- 325

ing and recognizing new opportunity and new value in data. 326

IV. ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES IN 327

COGNITIVE COMPUTING 328

In this section, we introduce the enabling technologies which 329

include reinforcement learning and deep learning. The rein- 330

forcement learning can learn from the environment and 331

reflects on behavior. The deep learning can learn high levels 332

of features. We will give a detailed description. 333

A. COGNITIVE COMPUTING AND 334

REINFORCEMENT LEARNING 335

The traditional machine learning methods can divided into 336

supervised learning and unsupervised learning. In those 337

methods, the machines train those model with data that 338

are often in fixed format and machines complete tasks 339

such as regression, classification and aggregation. However, 340

the information that can be received by the machines is lim- 341

ited. It is difficult for machines to learn information in nonlin- 342

ear case because they can only conduct prediction according 343

to the received information. Moreover, the tag for same data 344

can be different in different conditions, which means that the 345

usability of information learned by machines is different for 346

different users. Traditional supervised learning and unsuper- 347

vised learning are based on closed training with data input. 348

These traditional learning methods are unable to meet the 349

requirements of sustainable improvement in intelligence of 350

machine. Therefore, reinforcement learning has become a hot 351

research branch in the field of machine learning. 352

Reinforcement learning is quite similar to the learning 353

process of human. Let’s take the case where a child learns 354

to speak as an example. When a child is to learn a word, 355

usually an adult would repeatedly read that word, pointing 356

at something represented by that word or doing the action 357

represented by that word. If the child’s understanding is 358

wrong due to incorrect judgement, the adult would conduct 359

correction. Once the child gets it right, the adult would give 360

reward. The ambient environment is also a very important 361

factor during the learning process of human. Reinforcement 362

learning takes the example by this point and it can learns from 363

the environment and reflects on behavior. A set of reward 364

mechanism is established, i.e., certain reward is given when 365

some behavior is good for objective and certain punishment is 366

exerted on the contrary. During the process toward the objec- 367

tive, there are multiple choices. Therefore, the decision at 368

each time is not necessarily the optimum, but it must be good 369

for the machine to gain more reward. Let’s take AlphaGo [37]370

as an example. After absorbing millions of games of chess371

for deep learning, it plays chess with itself by reinforcement372

learning and in its strategy, each choice is not necessarily the373

optimum step like deep learning at that step, but the step that374

is most likely to cause final win as per global planning. In this375

process, themachine is not only dependent on past experience376

but would also try new paths to maximize the target reward.377

Just like drawing learning, extemporaneous play would be378

added once the basic skills are mastered. Data are generated379

in the process of attempts of machine, the final objective is380

not regression, classification or aggregation but maximum381

reward. With this purpose, both successful and unsuccessful382

attempts are meaningful for the machine. It would learn383

from experience in previous attempts at each subsequent384

step.385

However, if a machine only communicates with itself,386

then its cognition is not satisfactory. This is just like for a387

child, it would be difficult to learn to speak without com-388

municating with others. Therefore, if a learning system car-389

ries out its idea irrespective of external circumstances, it is390

not a good cognitive system. So, a cognitive system should391

conduct communication directly with human. However, if a392

person is specially assigned to conduct communication with393

a machine, it would consume a lot of time and manpower.394

Fortunately, the crowdsourcing method can make the com-395

munication between machine and human natural. A typical396

case is the game Foldit. In this game, a target protein is given,397

the players conduct assemblingwith various amino acids until398

the complete body of this piece of protein is pieced together.399

The players volunteer to participate in the assembling process400

of amino acids. Furthermore, if there are enough players,401

the collective intelligence of this crowd of unprofessional402

players will surpass that of a few professionals. This method403

can be used to improve the intelligence of machine in some404

application fields by allowing the users to unconsciously405

communicate with machine through customized cognitive406

computing software. The diverse information provided by the407

users who participate in crowdsourcing unconsciously also408

remits the rely of cognitive learning on data and a new kind409

of data processing method is provided at the same time.410

B. COGNITIVE COMPUTING AND DEEP LEARNING411

1) RATIONAL METHOD AND PERCEPTUAL METHOD412

The cerebral cortex of human is divided into two hemispheres413

that have different functions. As formost people, the left brain414

is responsible for language, ideas, logic, etc. While the right415

brain is responsible for visual thinking and emotions. People416

with a developed left brain usually bear strong logicality and417

are more rational (e.g., scientist). While people with a devel-418

oped right brain usually have strong creativity, are good at419

cognition on space and object shapes (e.g., artist). Therefore,420

the thinking mode of human is divided into logical thinking421

and visual thinking. According to different abstraction in422

content of thinking, the method for human to recognize the423

natural world is divided into: rational method and perceptual 424

method. 425

The rational method is based on strict concept and defini- 426

tion, while the perceptual method is certain mapping relation 427

established between input and output. How human brain 428

realizes the information coding, processing and storage for 429

100 billion of nerve cells is still unknown. However, the think- 430

ing method of human brain can be simulated in cognitive 431

system through data analysis. The manual feature design 432

method are strictly defined. This method can be viewed as 433

a kind of rational method, i.e., it simulates logical thinking 434

ability of human. The feature learning method is to learn 435

the mapping relation between input and output. It is a kind 436

of perceptual method, i.e., it simulates the ability of visual 437

thinking of human. 438

As shown in Fig. 4, rational and perceptual methods are 439

adopted separately to determine a quadrangle is a square. 440

The rational analytic method is used to detect the features of 441

a square, to determine if there are four right angles and to 442

decide whether the lengths of four sides are identical or not, 443

as shown in Fig. 4 (a). Thismethod requires the understanding 444

of concepts of angle, right angle, side and length of side. If a 445

picture of square is shown to a child and he or she is told that 446

it is a square, after several times of learning, that child can 447

recognize a square accurately, as shown in Fig. 4 (b). In fact, 448

the child does not know the concept of side or angle but 449

he or she can still recognize a square. The method where the 450

child recognizes a square is perceptual method or intuition. 451

In fact, after several practices, the child learns the mapping 452

relation between the figure of square and the concept of 453

square. Recognizing a square with rational method requires 454

seeking image features, manual feature design can be viewed 455

as simulation of this method.When a child learns to recognize 456

a square, perceptual method is employed to establish themap- 457

ping relation between figure and concept, learning features 458

with deep learning model can be viewed as simulation of this 459

method. 460

2) COGNITIVE COMPUTING AND IMAGE UNDERSTANDING 461

If machine is going to solve problems in real world, the best 462

way is to simulate the thinking mode of human brain. In cog- 463

nitive system, the features can either be extracted from orig- 464

inal data for classification and prediction model using the 465

method ofmanual feature design to simulate the logical think- 466

ing ability of human brain or can be learned through deep 467

learning to simulate the ability of visual thinking of human 468

brain. As the computer applications are getting more sophis- 469

ticated, the researchers are realizing that many problems in 470

real world that are easy to understand by human beings are 471

difficult to describe with rational method making the ratio- 472

nal analytic method ineffective or completely impossible for 473

computers. In other words, the effective data features cannot 474

be designed with manual feature design method and it is quite 475

difficult for computer to realize the feature expression. 476

Image feature extraction is the base for understand- 477

ing the image irrespective of application (e.g., image 478

classification and image retrieval). Let’s take face recognition479

as an example. There are two methods for feature extraction480

in face images: manual feature design and feature learning.481

In manual feature design method, the computer simulates482

the rational method for recognition and determines which483

features (e.g., shape of nose, eyes, eyebrow and mouth) on484

human face can be used for distinction. The feature design485

and the feature extraction [38] become quite difficult due to486

factors such as expression, making up, beard, glasses, change487

in illumination and photographing angle. However, when a488

human being conducts face recognition, he or she seldom489

considers specific features in the image, instead, he or she490

makes judgement totally by virtue of intuition. The expres-491

sion, illumination, photographing angle and glasses in the492

pictureswould not influence the recognition effects at all [39].493

It can be paraphrased that the mapping relation between the494

input (i.e., pictures of a person) and the output (i.e., who495

is that person) is established with this recognition method496

of human by virtue of intuition. When image classification497

is conducted with deep learning, the perceptual method of498

human for image recognition is simulated. The mapping499

relation between the images and the classification results500

is obtained through learning a large amount of image data,501

i.e., the feature expression of input images is obtained and502

used for classification. The classification results for input503

image can be obtained when a mapping relation obtained504

through training is utilized [28], [40] .505

V. APPLICATION OF COGNITIVE COMPUTING506

A. COGNITIVE COMPUTING AND ROBOT TECHNOLOGY507

Robots were born in the middle of the 20th century. With the508

development of more than half a century, robot technology509

has profoundly influenced the production mode and life style 510

of human. This technology has become an important symbol 511

to measure the level of scientific technological innovation and 512

high-end manufacturing of a country. ‘‘Making a man-like 513

robot’’ has been a great desire of human beings for thou- 514

sands of years. However, the current relationship between 515

human and robot is still the relationship between utilizing 516

and being utilized, and between replacing and being replaced. 517

The new trend in social development indicates that the new 518

generation of robot system will simulate human beings from 519

more aspects in future, especially, there should be a kind 520

of partnership relation where robots and humans coexist in 521

harmony and make their respective advantages complemen- 522

tary to each other. The co-fusion with human beings is an 523

important feature for new generation of robots. 524

B. EMOTIONAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM 525

Currently, the world is interconnected through internet, 526

mobile phones and countless objects. The seamless fusion 527

of physical world and cyber world has become the trend in 528

development of future network [41]. Thematerial life today is 529

increasingly abundant and people have started to transfer the 530

focus of attention from physical world to spiritual world. For 531

example, the traditional Smart Home 1.0 only realizes energy 532

saving through networking of machine to machine (M2M) 533

and makes it convenient for a human being to remotely 534

control the electric appliances. However, after the addition of 535

cognition on human by machine, the traditional smart home 536

evolves into Smart Home 2.0 [42]. The Smart Home 2.0 is a 537

new generation of smart home system and integrates Smart 538

Home 1.0 and emotion cognition. It is an intelligent system 539

that integrates user, intelligent application, green plants and 540

indoor environment. The system combines smart home and541

indoor green plants to provide intelligent cognitive services542

for perception and regulation on emotions of indoor users.543

It is able to perceive the emotions of user and adjust the544

environment accordingly.545

Emotions of human beings gradually become a direct ref-546

erence index for spiritual world. Thus, emotion cognition is547

an important application of cognitive computing. Further-548

more, this is a new human-machine interaction technology.549

Currently, the human-machine interaction system available550

often means human-machine interaction supported in visual551

distance environment (i.e., within the view of each other).552

However, most of human-to-human or human-to-robot inter-553

actions are not in the mode of visual distance. In order to554

break through the limitation in traditional human-machine555

interaction system, we introduces a kind of emotional com-556

munication system not based on mode of visual distance [27].557

In this system, the remote communication mode is not558

video or voice call on mobile phone, but the communication559

medium discussed in the paper is pillow robot. This cognitive560

system has a lots of applications, for example, there is an561

autistic child who is at home alone and his or her mother562

went on a long-term business trip. The emotion of this child563

is quite passive that significantly influences the physical and564

the psychological health of the child. At themoment, the child565

longs for the concern of his or her mother and it is not only566

a paragraph of mother’s voice in the call, the child also longs567

for true emotional comfort in sense of touch as if the mother568

is with him or her. In emotional communication system not569

based on mode of visual distance, emotion is firstly defined570

as a kind of multimedia data that is similar to voice and571

video. Emotional information can not only be recognized but572

can also be transmitted in long distance. In the meantime,573

an emotional communication protocol is proposed by the574

system considering the real-time requirements and ensuring575

the reliability of emotional communication.576

C. MEDICAL COGNITIVE SYSTEM577

With economic development and environmental changes in578

human society, themorbidity of chronic diseases is constantly579

increasing and chronic diseases have become the greatest580

threat to human health. As for medical professionals, a medi-581

cal cognitive system can be utilized to assist in diagnosis and582

to make decision using various types of data and contents583

in order to take appropriate operation. In medical system,584

the risk is quite high if correct data relation and mode are not585

found [28]. If the important information is ignored or mis-586

understood, then the patient can suffer long-term injury and587

even death. The multidisciplinary fusion of technologies such588

as machine learning, AI and natural language processing can589

enable the cognitive computing to determine the mode and590

the relation of a disease from data. All different data points591

should be analyzed comprehensively to help the medical592

experts in learning, until the final accurate solution is found.593

In cognitive system, the cooperation between human and594

machine is intrinsic, which is able to ensure that medical595

institutions obtain more values from data and solve compli- 596

cated problems [43], [44]. 597

VI. CONCLUSION 598

In this paper, we first introduced the evolution of cogni- 599

tive computing from four aspects, i.e., knowledge discovery, 600

cognitive science, big data and cognitive computing. Then, 601

the cognitive computing system architecture is proposed 602

which consists of three parts, i.e., IoT, big data analysis and 603

cloud computing. Furthermore, we introduce the enabling 604

technologies in cognitive computing including reinforcement 605

learning and deep learning. Finally, the representative appli- 606

cations of cognitive computing are illustrated from three sce- 607

narios, i.e., robot technology, emotion communication system 608

and medical cognitive system. 609

KAI HWANG (F’86–LF’17) received the Ph.D. 787

degree from the University of California at Berke- 788

ley, Berkeley, CA, USA, in 1972. He is currently 789

a Professor of electrical engineering and computer 790

science with the University of Southern California, 791

where he teaches computer architecture, wireless 792

Internet, cloud, and pervasive computing courses. 793

He is aworld-renowned Scholar in computer archi- 794

tecture, parallel and cloud computing, network 795

security, and Internet applications. He is also an 796

EMC-Endowed Visiting Chair Professor of computer science with Tsinghua 797

University, China. He was recognized as an IEEE Fellow in 1986 for making 798

significant contributions in computer architecture, digital arithmetic, and 799

parallel processing. He has published eight books and over 240 scientific 800

papers most appeared in the IEEE or ACM transactions and conferences. 801

According to Google Scholars Citations (2015), his published work was 802

cited over 14 000 times with an h-index of 51 and i10-index of 154. His 803

classic book, Computer Architecture and Parallel Processing (McGraw-Hill 804

1983) was cited over 2200 times. His top two papers were cited 572 and 805

409 times. His most recent book Distributed and Cloud Computing (Morgan 806

Kaufmann-an Elsevier Imprint), was named a 2012 Outstanding Academic 807

Title by the American Library Association’s Choice Publication. He received 808

the very first Outstanding Achievement Award by the China Computer 809

Federation in 2004. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the 810

IEEE CloudCom Conference in 2012, for his pioneering contributions to 811

parallel and distributed computing. He has chaired numerous IEEE/ACM 812

international conferences and delivered 40 keynote addresses on cutting- 813

edge computing and Internet technologies. In 2014, he presented a plenary 814

talk on Cloud Analytics for Big Data Security and Intelligence at the ASE 815

Big Data Science Conference held at Stanford University. He has served 816

as the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Parallel and Distributed 817
