COG-Ottawa Farm Tours 2012 (Rain or Sun)

By Dick Coote

Chelsea-Area Evening Tour - Wednesday July 11th, 2012 at 6:30 pm.Brad Wright and Leela Ramachandran manage Chelsea Gardens on the Hedrick Farm development in Chelsea, QC. In 2012, they are growing two acres

of vegetables and herbs, including over 40 types and 80 varieties. They use organic seeds and production methods, focusing on heir-loom seed varieties chosen for quality, flavour and diversity. Their produce is harvested fresh and marketed directly to local eaters through farmer’s markets, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), and a farm gate stand. See http://www.jardinschelseagardens.ca/; as well as the Hendrick Farm website, www.hendrickfarm.ca for further details.

Directions: Heading north on Hwy 5 from Ottawa/Gatineau: take the Old Chelsea Road exit and turn left. Just after crossing over Hwy 5, you will pass a driveway leading to the old farmhouse at 165 Old Chelsea. Right after their driveway is a road called Chelbrook. Turn left onto Chelbrook and then left again onto a gravel road that leads to the barn. Park and meet in front of the barn.

Jasper Area Tour - Sunday August 19th, 2012. This tour starts at 10:00 am and is followed by a picnic lunch at 12:30 pm and a second farm tour at 2:00 pm.

Jasper Apple Farm is run by Ted Turner and Mary Bayes. It is a ‘pick your own’ apple

orchard and this year they are celebrating their 32nd year. In addition to apples, they grow a wide array of certified organic produce. Besides supplying

many local restaurants, they sell their organic produce at the farm. Their sea-son is quite long as they have been able to extend the growing season through the use of garden domes and a greenhouse.

Directions: Go south through the village of Merrickville, then take the right fork onto County Road 16 towards Jasper. Jasper Apple Farm is about 5 minutes from Merrickville, at #1629, County Road 16.

Picnic lunch at 12:30 pm: Bring-your-own picnic lunch, which can be enjoyed at the Jasper Apple Farm, or alternatively, retrace your steps to Merrickville and find lunch in one of the many restaurants in the village.

Second farm tour 2:00 pm: Samantha Hart and Aaron Klinck run Funny Duck Farm, a certified organic livestock farm, specializing in pasture raised heritage pork as well as chicken. They also make and sell herbal teas and tinctures, and can supply a variety of other organic products.

Directions: From Jasper Apple Farm, continue south on County Road 16 through Jasper. Just after Jasper, turn left onto County Road 7, cross Line 5 (Kinch)/Arnold Road, then Leacock/Crystal Bates Road, then turn left on Line 8 (formerly Morrison) Road; Funny Duck Farm is about 100 metres down Line 8 (Morrison) Road.

There is no charge for the tours, but a voluntary donation will be gratefully accepted by COG-Ottawa, and will be put towards our ongoing costs of operat-ing our chapter, including organizing farm tours. $10 per person is suggested.

To sign up for either of the tours, please contact Dick Coote at [email protected], or 613-838-2900.

Come Join the Fun at Feast of Fields 2012By Indigo Holley

Feast of Fields is only a few months away. The Feast of Fields organizing team has been hard at work planning this years’ event.

This will be Feast of Fields 12th consecutive year. Feast of Fields will be held at the Canada Agricultural Museum on Sunday, September 16th.

Feast of Fields showcases local organic farms and top-notch chefs. The event is an excellent example of the abundant organic food grown and produced locally.

Feast of Fields attracts more than 500 organic-minded, progressive participants who are health-minded and food connoisseurs from the Ottawa-Gatineau area.

Feast of Fields participants are generally located within a 100 mile radius of the event, lessening the event’s carbon footprint. We keep our carbon footprint as small as possible by using “real’ dishes (china), insisting on biodegradable food containers for serving. As well, we have implemented a recyc-ling and composting program. Although Feast of Fields’ car-bon footprint is already small, every year we strive to lessen it even more.

Feast of Fields is the main fundraiser for COG-Ottawa. The funds raised support COG-Ottawa’s outreach activities and on-

going work. For instance, Growing Up Organic, Senior Organic Gardeners and Farmer Outreach Programs all receive funding from the proceeds raised during Feast of Fields.

Feast of Fields tickets will be on sale soon . Please purchase your tickets early! Please visit the Feast of Fields’ webpage at www.feastoffields.ca We also have a Facebook page and

a Twitter account. We hope to see you at Feast of Fields on Sunday, September 16th at the Canada Agriculture Museum. Indigo Holley

SENIOR ORGANIC GARDENERS OFF TO A BLOOMING START!

After launching Senior Organic Gardeners at the beginning of the year, the initiative to get seniors involved in organic growing is off to a blooming start at two retirement homes: Longfields Manor in

Barrhaven and at Unitarian House in Westboro. www.cog.ca/ottawa/goo/Seniors have participated in a short relaxed workshop about organic gardening. Interested seniors

have been involved in planting seeds in the garden beds at both facilities. This is a pilot project which has been led by organic gardening instructor Rob Danforth. More will be said about this new program in the next edition of Down to Earth. We wish our senior members a fantastic growing season and hope to enjoy some wonderful photos in the fall highlighting their work.

Open Letter To COG-Ottawa

Supporters From The Three

ChairsCOG-Ottawa Steering Committee along with the other COG chapters have been most concerned about the finances of our ‘mother ship’, COG-National.

We have received an urgent appeal from our president, Dan Brisebois.

On May 15, COG-National Executive Director Beth McMahon dropped in on our Steering Committee meeting. It was a real opportunity for us to dialogue with Beth about a number of issues in-cluding finances, donations, and a plan for Canadian Organic Growers to not only survive, but to thrive in the future.

Please go to www.cog.ca and click on the “About Us” and then “Members’ Area.” You’ll find “Growing Ahead: A Vi-sion for COG”. Have a look at where we are headed.

Our Mission remains the same but there is a new spirit of engagement and inclusion both at the national and the grassroots levels!

The COG-Ottawa Steering Commit-tee has been donating to the survival of COG-National and we encourage every single member to do contribute what they can. At this moment, $36,000 has been received! Let’s remember that $65,000 is the goal and this is a serious need. We are in this together and every little bit really helps.

COG-Ottawa, let’s step up to the plate and donate to an effort we all be-lieve in.

Organic Gardening Workshops 2012

By David Townson

Canadian Organic Growers-Ottawa offered a number of organic garden-ing workshops throughout the first half of 2012 to teach amateur or-

ganic growers trade secrets and share methods for gardening success. Lots of learning and discussion took place as George Bushell and Pat Lu-cey led the four sessions at Sandy Hill Community Centre. In total, 64 participants attended and are now combining their new skills with fan-tastic weather to produce amazing flowers and fruits.

A question and answer session is planned for early July. Partici-pants are invited to meet George Bushell at his Community Garden

Allotment to ask for advice and tips for gardening success. The organic gardening workshops committee is planning a few changes

for 2013. Volunteers will be needed to help with coordination and promotion. If you’re interested, please touch base with our Coordinator of Volunteers, Heidi Monk at: [email protected]

Layout: Stephanie Pelot, www.pentafolio.com

Advertisement Co-ordinator: Position Vacant

Deadline for next Down to Earth: September 1, 2012. Submit all articles to Editor.

Advertising: Advertisements are accepted in accordance with the current advertising policy, which is revised periodically. Please request the most recent version at the time of your request.

Organic growers with produce for sale can be added to the Organic Food Directory for a small fee. COG members enjoy some dis-counts. COG-Ottawa does not necessarily endorse products and services advertised in Down to Earth and assumes no liabil-ity resulting from their use. Please contact the Advertisement Coordinator for further information.

Next advertising deadline: September 1, 2012

Down to Earth is a non-profit publishing pro-ject of Canadian Organic Growers, Ottawa Chapter which incurs substantial operating costs. Payment of each ad is expected before the insertion of a second ad.

Statements, opinions or views taken by the writers and advertisers do not necessarily re-flect those of the editor and publisher.

Canadian Organic Growers is a non-profit membership organization.

Once again Canadian Organic Growers is teaming up with the Canada Organic Trade Association to present Organic Week. This annual event is the largest annual celebration of organic food, farming and products across Canada. Hundreds of individual events showcase the benefits of organic agriculture and its positive impact on the environment.

COG-Ottawa has participated in Organic Week from its inception. In 2011, we encouraged health food stores, restaurants, farmers and others to celebrate Organic Week in a variety of ways.

We invite you to celebrate Organic Week with us in 2012:- Encourage your Health Food Store to feature organics in a special way- Suggest to your favorite restaurant that it advertise local organic dishes- If a CSA member, ask your farmer to promote Organic Week- If a farmer, advertize Organic Week at your farmer’s market or in the CSA box- Volunteer to help COG-Ottawa present Organic Week 2012

This is just the beginning. Let your creative juices flow! Tell us your ideas or your plan to celebrate Organic Week. Contact the COG-Ottawa Organic Week Coordinator Stephanie at: [email protected]

Good Value for Advertising DollarsThe Organic Food Directory AND Down to EarthOrganic vendors take note of a new Package Deal to advertise in BOTH the Organic Food Direc-tory AND Down to Earth on an annual basis.

Package DealMembers taking one year ads in both the Organic Food Directory AND Down to Earth enjoy a 20% discount on this package.
