Facilitated Networking

This was a facilitated network session where participants could choose a topic that they were interested in from six prepared topics. Tables then had time to discuss on their table and flipchart down their discussions. Below is what came through on flipchart:

How to improve Madrasah experience for teenage students:

Shift from being taught to mentoring, guiding, spiritual experience – treating them as adults.

Students come back for 1 year service as teaching assistants.

Make classes more relevant, address current issues being faced and having lively discussions.

Using hooks to engage them through: sports, technology and social media.

Show your (teachers) passion for the subject.

Allow use of phone in class for research.

Trips and exposure to the outside world.

Show how to “live” your faith in the real world.

Give them responsibility.

Relate Ahlul bayt (a.s) to modern issues example: Human rights, environment and conflicts.

Making madrasah relevant to their lives.

Be creative otherwise we will lose them.

Not making Madrasah apart from their lives but making madrasah a part of their lives.

How to promote Lifelong learning within our madrasah:

Involve graduates as teaching assistants to become teachers.

Appointing mentors.

Platforms by Madaris incorporating life aspects: A levels, university, career, setting up home, marriage (therefore madrasah to provide support for these).

Inter- Madrasah sport matches/ tournaments.

Partnering with AB societies at universities.

Post Madrasah (year 11)students come in for 1 year as helpers teaching assistant, admin.

Introduce GCSE for post Madrasah this has helped but not ideal.

How should we assess the learning in our Madaris?

Prior to assessment: Essential Question: What is the Madaris target? Develop internally?

Formative assessment :Child friendly so as not to increase burden

Practical akhlaq

Salah assessments not added to exams but should be practical and should take place over the year.

How to motivate teachers for training:

Teachers themselves promoted it after completion (eg comments/ feedback by whatsapp

group) thus there was less of admin promoting and more of teachers promoting.”Peer

Marketing.”

In house training to help with logistics

Buy in – realising the responsibility of being a teacher.

Formal Inset day (so teachers are aware of upcoming training)

Formal/ professional approach: example CPD folders, certificates provide incentive.

Tarbiyya update from MCE and sessions with Madaris on Tarbiyya curriculum- Facilitated by Doctor Akbar Mohamedali

Naushad Mehrali, Head of MCE talked about Tarbiyya update, which lessons were ready and what

would be new in 2018. click on the link below to view the slides.

https://www.coej.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/CD-slides-COEJ-MLT.pdf

Shaykh Fazle Abbas Datoo talked about the reasons why Al Mahdi Madrasah, Wessex had been the

first Madrasah to implement Tarbiyya curriculum. One of the main reasons he had bought into the

curriculum was that Madrasah learning should not be disjointed from school and the processes used

to teach at madrasah should be innovative, children should be able to apply Islam in their lives. He felt

that Tarbiyya had the potential to be able to do this. He mentioned he felt supported by MCE in this

journey and although there had been teething problems together they had managed to roll the

curriculum out at Al Mahdi Madrassah.

Aliasgar Rajabali from Hyderi Islamic School presented a powerpoint regarding how the journey at

Hyderi Islamic School had been in adopting the Tarbiyya curriculum and shared some of the feedback

received from students and teachers. To read his power point please click below.
