This is intended as a placeholder abstract to request a DS speaker to demonstrate V6 Imagine & Shape as an introductory session for new users who have never tried it before. I'd like to request a short, 15 minute video before the conference that will act as a lecture. 2093: Achieve a Robust and Manufacturable Composite Design

Nathan Shipley, Witchita State University; Mahesh Turaga, Dassault Systèmes El Capitan A Robust data integration allows an automated approach in multidisciplinary design to target scenarios. Typically, designing to a

target is interpreted independently by each group involved. Great improvement is needed to current methods in which the virtual design is passed from function to function and changed each time to meet new targets. By the end of the process, the resulting part is overweight, hard to manufacture, and isn't robust. Instead, a better approach is to leverage an open framework to

simultaneously incorporate engineering targets across disciplines. An

2081: Early Simulation Enables Innovation: A Pragmatic Implementation Patrick Grimberg, Digital Product Simulation, Inc. Malibu

In product development today, simulation and analysis software, such as ABAQUS, is widely used by experts to analyse the behaviour of systems or products and to validate their architecture and design. However, it is more fruitful to promote more interactions between digital simulation and the development process. This way it becomes possible to adjust the product design immediately. A tight interaction between simulation and product development is much more effective

from organizational and technical points of view, and can save an

incredible amount of money and time when it is done "early." More than savings, it will "enable Innovation." Several implementations and stages of this approach will be discussed using industrial business

cases, observations, and real applications such as "having the CAE experts use advanced simulation tools integrated within the design environment" or the "implementation of guided workbench and knowledge based templates by designers." In addition to detailed design analysis, the use and integration of preliminary 0D/1D models based (such as DYMOLA) on functional breakdown, physics, and equations, becomes mandatory to allow for earlier decision making and

trade off while keeping the traceability of the requirements. Also, the extensive use of various optimization techniques (topology and MDO) in

these early stages of product development provides new ways for design exploration and innovation. 2104: Leveraging MES to Execute Electronic Test Procedures

2108: CATIA V5 FTA Functional Tolerance and Annotation

Shawn Ehrstein, Wichita State University Laguna A 2116: Tablet Enabled Multi-User CATIA V5; A Working Prototype C. Greg Jensen, Brigham Young University El Capitan A

Design reviews, War on Weight, Cost, Producibility, etc. are generally held in conference rooms with one person controlling the presentation/WebEx and everyone else watching with the occasional added comment. At planned junctures someone in the room, or a remote attendee, will request control to drive the presentation,

manipulate the active model, switch to another file, etc. Researchers at Brigham Young University envisioned an engineering review environment that would allow all participants to actively view, create, edit (part and assembly) models from a table, laptop and/or workstation. Building on a four-year foundation of simultaneous multi-user CAx (i.e. plugins like NXConnect and CATIAConnect), they have now enabled these applications on tablet devices. Each (tablet, laptop,

or workstation) client links to the CATIAConnect server and database to

interact with the single master model being refined by the team of specialists attending the review/meeting. If concurrent engineering is defined as parallel teams and individuals works seamlessly to perform

product development from concept initiation through production, maintenance and product retirement, then one should consider how more efficient and productive engineers, designers, and manufacturing personnel would be if more of their meetings took advantage of multi-user viewing, creating, editing, etc. the data being discussed. This presentation introduces and demonstrates a working prototype of

multi-user CATIA V5 deployed on Tables. Both Part and Product environments will be demonstrated wherein engineers will enter "cloud-

based" shared models, with each person has full access to their own viewing frustum, mouse, keyboard, and CATIA interface to synchronously or asynchronously work on complex single models or assemblies. Specifically, this presentation addresses moving the multi-

users CATIAConnect environment to a Tablet and discussing the benefits and challenges that have been observed. Time permitting we will also demonstrate a NXConnect Tablet client and a CATIAConnect Tablet client working seamlessly on the same master model. The presentation will end with a discussion of next steps; where the multi-user CAx research and development efforts are headed.

students how to write Fortran extensions and plugins to systems like

Applicon, Computervision, and CALMA. Today almost 40 years later BYU is still teaching freshmen, juniors, seniors and grad students how engineers can leverage the full capabilities of model CAx like ANSYS,

CATIA, HyperMesh, NX, Star-CCM+, etc. to improve designs, short the design process and reduce the costs of engineering and production. This presentation focuses on curriculum found in BYU's ME 471 CAE Application course. After discussing the makeup of the class lectures and lab assignments the rest of the presentation will focus on two different semester long CATIA projects, the re-engineering a Nissan

350Z RC drift car and the re-engineering of a WalkeraHeli-V400D02 RC helicopter. Students used topology optimization, both parametric

surface and solid modeling, mass properties, FEA, CFD, animation and motion analyses to create a superior RC vehicle. The presentation will end with a discussion of how companies can cherry pick the best and brightest mechanical engineering students who have mastered the use

of CAx tools. 2139: LOTAR: Managing Digital Data at the Importance of Standards Rick Zuray, The Boeing Company Avila B

One of the most critical components of a Model Based Enterprise (MBE)

is managing the product and technical data throughout its lifecycle. 3D Model Based Definition (MDB) introduces many issues and challenges one of which comes with the storage and use of Digital Data. The challenge is that the data is often stored in a proprietary, native format and will most likely be un-interpretable over time. Archiving data in its native form requires periodic migration to the new release (version)

and this method quite often leads to data loss and the repair can be costly. Moving to a Tiered data Archive reduces the data footprint of the Production repository, thus increasing response time, while still maintaining availability of the data. This presentation discusses solutions and the importance of developing data standards and specific standards that are being developed to mitigate these challenges and

manage data in a standardized method. This presentation goes on to discuss the collaboration with many industry standards bodies/communities and the importance of standardization. 2159: V6 101--Everything For the First Time User (Part 2) Scott Pokriefka, Tata Technologies Capistrano

Chuck Buckley, Dassault Systèmes El Capitan B

System availability is a critical factor when considering the effectiveness of how the consumer is supported after product deployment in the field. The costs and downtime associated with field support, is frequently managed with an antiquated method of "planned"

maintenance, versus a "predicted" view that is based around real-time operating conditions that can direct maintenance activities. It is now

possible to leverage PLM content, and utilize historical experiences to

determine the maintenance activities that will maximize the time between maintenance cycles.

Dassault Systems has introduced a patented innovation that delivers a predictive analysis capability to maintenance planning. This innovation considers the thousands of real time characteristics that may influence the success or failure of a complex system. This presentation will outline how this new process capability can be used to institute a predictive view of how systems should to be maintained to insure optimized system availability. While applying this new approach to the

management of maintenance tasks, the services can expect to reduce their cost of life cycle support and increase the availability of their

assets. Examples will be given of how the maintenance of complex systems are able to be managed, and controlled in a predictive manner. Unlike

classical statistics (Statistical Process Control,Design Of Experiments) or neural networks, this patented capability creates a new level of insight that is able to be clearly understood and managed by the process owners who have the responsibility of program success. 2034: V6 NC-Prismatic Machining Mark Griffin, Dassault Systèmes

will clean parts of corrupt and unused "invisible" elements that can use large amounts of memory, thus significantly reducing the model size.

So it can be very important to execute it before storing CATIA files in a PLM system. It is also an important tool in the management of long lifecycle parts, since subsequent releases of CATIA software may require that older CATIA files should be reprocessed by CATDUA for

efficient retrieval and display. CAA methods are available to execute CATDUA. This presentation will discuss the CAA methods used to invoke the CATDUA utility and process the results. 2096: Try V5 with V6 Designer Central James O’Brien, Idex Solutions Huntington B

2105: CAx server That is Scalable and CAD Agnostic Eric Bowman & C. Greg Jensen, Brigham Young University San Simeon A Tier 1 Aerospace companies spend about $5,000,000,000 a year on CAD model translation and data hand-offs. Engineers at these

companies must often wait for hours to load assemblies before they can begin work. This is time and money that could be saved in a CAD Agnostic environment that can support large scale projects. At Brigham Young University we are developing a CAD architecture integrated with the CATIA V5 environment that allows large numbers of engineers to collaborate in real-time on large-scale assemblies using the CAD system of their choice.

2134: Using Model-Based Systems Engineering and Multi-Physics Simulations to Develop a Vertical Take-Off and Landing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Ed Ladzinski, Dassault Systèmes Malibu The delivery of increasingly complex defense systems requires a transformational approach to systems engineering. Organizations understand that a small incremental change to their systems engineering processes and tools is not going to deliver the business

transformation needed to address today's defense challenges. Systems engineering best practice dictates that a more unified and integrated

approach to developing complex cyber-physical products is needed -- an approach that enables an organization to conceptualize a complete product or system and then decompose it to its constituent sub-systems, functions and parts, optimize cross-discipline constraints,

develop individual solution components and then integrate and validate them through virtual assemblies and simulations of system and product behavior. This presentation will show how the Dassault Systèmes Virtual Launch Solution Experience meets these demands. We outline how this solution enables the rapid creation of complex and adaptable engineered

systems, through an integrated approach where the development of

cyber-physical products is achieved in a fully integrated, collaborative, cross-discipline systems engineering environment. 2164: CATIA Best Practices for Tooling Design Daniel Pyzak, Dassault Systèmes Laguna A

Simulation in CATIA V6 can be integrated with DYMOLA for complex interactions between systems of many engineering fields, such as mechanical, electrical, thermodynamic, hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal and control systems. 2103: Model-Based Systems Engineering Using Dymola:

Application-Driven Success Stories John Batteh, Modelon, Inc. Malibu Model-based systems engineering is rapidly changing the competitive landscape for OEMs and suppliers. In an effort to drive cost savings and shorten product development cycles, engineers are increasingly looking

to analytic tools to support systems engineering processes and deliver

innovative, no-compromise solutions to customers. As system complexities increase, there is an acute need to develop multi-domain system models to support controls development and properly

understand the interactions between subsystems and assembled systems. The cost of poor systems engineering is directly felt by the customer via interaction with the engineered system . This talk will focus on the value of Dymola as illustrated by successful applications from Modelon with customer/partners. The focus of the talk with be customer success stories across a range of multi-domain

system applications. The talk will highlight the following:

* Systems engineering challenges based on customer experience * Successful applications in upfront system design, system optimization, and controls development using Modelon libraries and services with Dymola

* Future challenges in systems engineering and the role of Modelica/Dymola to meet them The key features of the Modelica language and Dymola to enable such applications will be highlighted throughout the talk. These topics include the use of configurable architectures to enable plug and play modeling, model templates to enable rapid analyses to end customers,

and external interfaces to models showing flexibility for customization

2135: Automating CATIA V6 using C#, Python, and Languages Other Than VB Joe Konecny, Inceptra Capistrano Several companies have been asking for training and mentoring on how

to automate CATIA V6 using languages other than VBA or VB.NET. Some of the more common requests have been C#, Python, and Java.

In this hands-on session, users will be shown how to configure the different development platforms to be able to use CATIA's COM API's and then develop several simple yet useful applications in each language that will introduce them to the syntax and structure of each

language, as well as presenting some of the CATIA V6 object model. The exercises will be created in such a way that no previous programming experience is necessary (although it might be helpful). Each exercise will walk users step-by-step through launching the development environment through a fully functional V6 application. All source-code will also be distributed.

2141: Neutral Formats for Composites and FAA Certification

Rich Murrish, The Boeing Company Avila A The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has always required aerospace companies to have processes in place that would enable them to recover "design intent" for the lifecycle of their products. In the

past, manufacturers satisfied this obligation with two dimensional drawings and at that time it was a fairly straight forward process. Since the final artifact of the early 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages was still a drawing, nothing had to change. However, the recent widespread adoption of Model Based Definition (MBD) techniques has created a completely new set of challenges for the long

term archiving of engineering data. This paper will review the history and current state of aircraft design. Then, it will describe the necessity for explicit geometric representations and neutral data formats that are recognized as international standards.

IREQ, the Hydro-Québec Research Institute, is an early adopter of

CATIA V6, with a first small-scale implementation of R2012 release: 8 users, relatively light customization. PCO Innovation, as a Dassault Systèmes Service Partner, had the chance to conduct an upgrade of this implementation for R2013x V6 release. It was the occasion to

rethink IREQ current architecture and customization, optimize it, in order to leverage all R2013x enhancements, and to realign IREQ methodologies and practices accordingly, for an optimal fit with their needs. IREQ and PCO will give a general feedback of this successful upgrade experience, including the challenges we had to face, our methodology to resolve them, and some lessons and best practices learned during this project, that may be used for a potential larger

scale implementation of V6 at HYDRO-QUÉBEC.

2102: Modelica and the Functional Mockup Interface (FMI): Openness and End User Value John Batteh, Modelon, Inc. Malibu

The development and adoption of open standards is rapidly increasing across both government, academic, and industrial applications. These openness initiatives have wide reaching impacts on model-based systems engineering (MBSE) processes. This talk focuses on the role of two open formats for model development and simulation that are rapidly emerging as standards for model-based systems engineering:

* Modelica for equation-based modeling * Functional Mockup Interface (FMI) for model exchange and cosimulation Modelica is the equation-based modeling language that provides the modeling framework behind Dymola. With a growing global user base,

Modelica is becoming the open standard for equation-based modeling.

This talk will give a brief overview of the history of the Modelica language, the Modelica Standard library, the Modelica Association who maintains the language and library, and the future outlook for Modelica.

The benefits of an open modeling standard from an end user's perspective will be highlighted. With a fragmented landscape consisting of both general and domain-specific tools with different underlying modeling formalisms, the systems engineer faces a daunting task to rapidly integrate both controls and physical models from various modeling environments. The

Functional Mockup Interface (FMI) defines a standardized interface for computer simulations of complex cyberphysical systems. The FMI

standard was developed as part of a collaboration between a large number of software companies and research centers. The result of this effort is the open FMI interface standard which supports both model exchange and co-simulation. This talk provides an overview of the FMI

2162: Tooling Compensation for Process Induced Deformations

of Composite Structures Etienne Ardouin Dassault Systèmes; Goran Fernlund, Convergent Technologies Laguna A

Manufacturing of composite structures within dimensional tolerances can be challenging due to process induced deformations such as "spring-in", where the as manufactured part shape is different than the shape of the tool it was processed on. Process simulation that accounts for the cure cycle, the curing material behavior, tool expansion and tool constraints, can be used to calculate process induced deformations,

without having to resort to manufacturing and measurement of full-

scale prototypes. This presentation will demonstrate a recently developed integrated workflow, where the original part and tool design can be compensated in an automated fashion, taking into account calculated process induced deformations. Dassault Systèmes' composites expert Etienne Ardouin

will be joined by Convergent Manufacturing Technologies' Göran Fernlund to provide a live demonstration of the integrated workflow; from initial part and tool design in CATIA Composites workbench, automated export of model information to SIMULIA Abaqus, model set-up and process analysis within Abaqus using COMPRO CCA (a Convergent product) and transformation of calculated process induced

deformation back to CATIA for automated tool surface compensation. 2167: Academic Roundtable Michel Michaud, Cege Mon Petit Huntington A

Modelling and Simulation (M&S) community is well structured for

system design, and able to provide general purpose technology based on open standards. On the contrary, M&S tools are scarce for system operation, and cover only very specific needs.

There are ever more stringent safety and environmental regulations for power plants and transportations systems, occurring in the context of the global competitive market. This presentation describes the work having been done so far by DPS in this regard through Research & Development or industrial projects.

Knut Stettnisch & Arnd Feye, Transcat Plm GmbH Laguna A Solutions for Model Based Definition: Trend towards a paperless product development process with the use of 3D data for all users of data and all processes in a company. 3D neutral formats support this

development. For a smooth product development are data required that are process compatible, complete, reliable and work for all users. For safeguarding the product development process the geometry, methodology and the completeness of JT data need to be validated. Since neutral CAD data are converted from CAD data it is meaningful to verify the analogy with the CAD source data. Viewers need to illustrate branch specific neutral formats like JT and PLMXML.

2095: PDM-IF: A PDM Implementers Forum to Address the Business Needs for PDM Interoperability Based on ISO STEP Standards Everson Luis de Campos Moura, Embraer & Jean-Yves Delaunay, EADS Airbus Avila B

Manufacturing industries needs a consistent set of STEP PDM information models standards, and associated recommended practices, covering the full product life cycle, from concept phase to support and dismantlement. To be usable by the industries, such standards shall be upward compatible with legacy PDM standards, and existing PDM data repositories. Moreover, they need to be managed consistently through

the time.Yet, achieving these goals is a very hard task. One of the main reasons is that, nowadays, the PDM stakeholders - industries, vendors, and integrators - don't have a commom place to gather use-cases and agree on their priorities, a commom platform for testing, and a forum to present and solve issues about these topics. In this session, it will be presented the work that is being done to create a PDM Implementers

Forum (PDM-IF) to fill these and other gaps identified by the industry.

2099: Virtual System Integration and Early Functional
