Department of English Education, Faculty of Languages and Arts

Education, IKIP PGRI Semarang. The first advisor is Dra. Siti Lestari,

M.Pd. and the second advisor is Drs. A. Wiyaka, M.Pd.

This final project is about code switching used in facebook status. The

objectives of this study are: (1) to know the types of code switching written

by the 9th semester students of English Department found in facebook status, (2)

to recognize the possible reasons of the 9th semester students of English

Department theirBahasa Indonesiainto English on facebook status.

This is qualitative research, it used descriptive method to describe the

result of the research. The collected data in the form of members

responses to questioners and also study of the books were identified and

classified into certain categories. And finally, the data will be presented

based on the analysis related to the research questions.

There is 15 status of the 9th

semester students. It classified into 15types and 13 reasons. Based on the final result of this study, the most types

that the sudents used is Intersentential type. The writer finds 6 or 40%

status of code switching in this category. The most reasons ofcode

switchingused by the 9th Semester Students of English Department in

facebook status are Interjection and Intention of Clarifying the Speech

Content for Interlocutor. The writer finds 4 or 30,8% status in this

    category.

Based on the conclusion, two suggestions are offered. The 9th semester

students of English Department should be able to used language in a right

way because they will have interaction with people. The readers should be

applying the alternative code in conveying the message.

    CHAPTER I

    INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study, reasons for choosing

topic, statements of the problem, objectives of the study, significances of the study,

definition of key terms and outline of the research.

    H. Background of the Study

For Indonesian, or maybe other people around the world who have not

English as their mother language, may use English as their second or third

language. This is because English was claimed as international language that

must be understood by everybody who has connected with other people who

have different language. Because of the three-pronged development of

    first-language, second-language, and foreign-language speakers it is

inevitable that a global language will eventually come to be used by more

people than any other language. English has already reached this stage

(Crystal, 2003: 6). When someone goes somewhere abroad, they need English

skill to communicate with the other. And when they came back to their country,

some of them are getting easier to talk by English than their own language. In

this case, there is may somebody who can not speak English very well, so the

speaker have to speak their original language. Here, sometimes code switching

    are happen.

The development of technology is getting higher day by day and year

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    12/65

    2

by year. People are also getting easier to use technology for communication.

Either to communicate with someone in local place who have the same

language with us or with one in very far away with different language who

never been met before. Getting communication seems be easier than the past,

and today, there are so many communication media that support us to make a

practice communication either with the people near us or with someone in far

distance. It is such as letters, facsimile, phone, internet media, and so on.

Facebook is such a social networking that has the largest member in

the world. Facebook is a social networking service and website launched in

February 2004, operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. As of July

2011, Facebook has more than 750 million active users (Wikipedia, 2011: 17 th

of July). Mark Zuckenberg, the founder, ever wants to close this site because it

has too much member and caused some criminal on world. According to

Wikipedia (2011: 17th of July), Facebook has met with controversies. It has

been blocked intermittently in several countries including the People's

Republic of China, Vietnam, Iran, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Syria, and

Bangladesh on different bases. But beside there is a negative effect of

Facebook, there is sure also a positive effect of Facebook, one of them is

    connecting people over the world.

The students of English department who learn English deeply are also

exist on Facebook. They learn English on their daily lecture day, so they

surely may influenced by English on their own conversation. There are so

much statuses, notes or comments on Facebook containing English written by

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    13/65

    3

the students of English Department. They often switch theirBahasa Indonesia

into English. This kind of situation may be called as code switching.

Language switching can actually happens only in the language of a

bilingual. Bilingualism is the term for speaking one or more languages

(Scotton, 2006: 2). In line with that explanation, the students of English

Department can be considered as bilingual because they should have ability to

speak English since they entered the department. The language situation in

Indonesia is considered higher than the local languages and English is

considered higher in prestige and social status than Bahasa Indonesia

(Syafiie, 1981: 40). Therefore, English Department Students are likely to do

code switching in their communication with others.

Subahanallah...... yang namanya orang tua mah always pray for all of

ou. We hope all of you be success. That's way, belajarlah seriously. That is

the example of code switching written by a student of English Department on

Facebook status. We can find other much example of sentence like that doing

by them because they as bilingual students have their own way to

communicate with each other. We can defined it to the rare phenomenon. By

switching the language like they do, some people may not understand what

they are talking about. Some may be know that its including to linguistics

phenomenon. Some may be understand about code switching, code mixing,

interference, and many other. But, the general people even the students of

English Department may do not know how to different between Code Mixing,

Code Switching and interference. According to Chaer on his book

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    14/65

    4

Sosiolinguistik Perkenalan Awal (2004: 114), The talk about code switching

is usually followed by a discussion of mixed code. Both events are common in

bilingual communities have common is great, that it is often difficult to

    distinguish."

The similarity of code switching and code mixing is on the using of

two languages or more. But clearly, we can differ looking the context.

According to Wardhaugh (2006: 103), Code mixing occurs when conversant

use both of languages together to the extent that they change from one

language to the other in the course of single utterance. It can be said that the

languages that used on code switching phenomenon still have each own

autonomy function, doing by consciously with certain factors. While on code

mixing, there is main code that has its own autonomy and function, while the

other code just a piece without a function. While the different of code

switching and interference lays in its reference. Code switching refers to the

use of other language beside our mother language on communicating, and

interference refers to the deviation of using another language on

communicating as a fault. Still according to Chaer (2004: 124), Interferences

are the errors by carrying over the speech habits o the native language or

dialect into second language or dialect

In this research, it will be investigated more deeply about the

phenomenon of code switching getting loose from the other phenomenon such

as code mixing and interference. Someone may have the reason why they

switch their mother language to the other language, in this case is Bahasa

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    5

Indonesia into English. The type of code switching they used also may be

variant. The type of code switching they used may depend on the reason or the

factor of the code switching they have.

    I. Reasons for Choosing the Topic

It is interesting to see how the code switching use by the bilinguals on

their Facebook status. The users may have reasons why they switch their

Bahasa Indonesia into English when they write the status. Then, the

researcher is challenged to conduct a research about the code switching found

in Facebook status. Then, the researcher explores it on a paper entitledCode

Switching on Facebook Status (An Analysis of Types and Reasons of Code

Switching Written by the9th Semester Students of English Department)

    J. Statement of Problems

This research specifically observes the code switching written by the

9th semester students of English Department of IKIP PGRI Semarang.

So, the questions for the research are formulated as follows:

    1. What are the types of code switching written by the 9

    th

    semester students

of English Department found in Facebook status?

    2. What are the possible reasons of the 9th semester students of English

Department switch their Bahasa Indonesia into English on Facebook

    status?

    K. Objectives of the Study

The objectives of this study as follows :

    9. To know the types of code switching written by the 9th semester students

of English Department found in Facebook status.

    10. To recognize the possible reasons of the switching 9th semester students of

English Department their Bahasa Indonesia into English on Facebook

    status.

    L. Significance of the Study

The significances of the Study that the writer tries to obtain the studies are:

    7. The Writer

The writer will have more experience and capability in searching good

analysis to help the Facebook-ers in learning code switching.

    8. The next writer

For the next writer to improve more other kind of social media.

    9. The Facebook Users

For the Facebook user to pay attention more to the language they share.

    M. Definition of the Key Terms

To avoid misunderstanding on terms used in this paper, the researcher

clarifies some terms that used in this paper. The terms used in this paper are

probably common. The terms that need to be clarified are:

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    17/65

    7

    1. Code Switching

Using two or more language in conversation. Hoffman (1991: 112).

    2. Facebook Status

A Facebook status is a feature that allows users to post and share a small

amount of content on their profile, on their friends' walls and in

Facebook news feeds. A user's Facebook status may be updated using

the "Update Status" bar that appears at the top of the user's homepage

    and profile page.

    3. Types

According to Bloom and Gumperz (1972: 214) as cited by Jendra, There

are three types of code switching based on grammatical classification,

    those are tag code-switching, inter-sentential code-switching, and

intra-sentential code-switching. There are also two types of code switching

based on the contextual classification, those are situational code-switching,

    and metaphorical code-switching.

    4. Reason

There are ten reasons for bilinguals to switch their first language into

another language according to Grosjean as cited in Kim, those are for

exclude or include someone from conversation, qualify message: amplify

or emphasize, fill a linguistic need for lexical item set phrase, discourse

marker, or sentence filler, continue the last language used, quote someone,

specify addressee, change role of a speaker: raise status, add authority,

show expertise, mark and emphasize group identity, specify speaker

    N. Outline of Research

This paper is organized into five chapters.

The first chapter is introduction. This chapter will explain about the

background of problem and the reason why it is chosen as the topic of

research. This chapter also consists of problem statements, purpose and

significance of the research, clarification of key terms and organization of

    writing.

The second chapter is the theoretical basis of code switching on

Facebook. This chapter contains literature that used as reference of the writer

about the code switching found in Facebook status.

The third chapter is the methodology of research. In this chapter, it will

be explained about method and technique that used by the writer to reach and

evaluate the source. The writer will describe the steps of the research which

will be doing by her. This chapter consists of research method, data resource,

population and sample, technique of collecting and analysis data.

The next chapter is analysis of data. This chapter is the explanation as

analysis product of the data. The explanation is based on the problem

statements and theories. This chapter includes the type of code switching

written by the 9th semester students of English Department found in Facebook

    CHAPTER II

    REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In this chapter, the writer discusses about previous language and society,

bilingualism and multilingualism in Indonesian, code switching, the type of code

switching, and the function of code switching.

    A. Language and Society

On a closer observation one will come up with a conclusion that

language plays an important role in process of social interaction.

Language is an intimate part of social identity. Language is like uniform,

a badge or a flag which signals ones group membership. In seeking clues

about his companion the Englishman is making use of the way in which

people from different social and geographical backgrounds use different

    kinds of language.

"Language is a unique human inheritance that plays the very

important role in human's life, such as a thinking, communicating ideas,

and negotiating with the others" (Siahaan, 2008:15). According to

Wardhaugh (2006: 2), "language is a communal possession, although

    admittedly an abstract one".

Even, society is the place where people live together and live side by

side to each others. On the other hand, social theorists attempt to

understand how societies are structured and how people manage to live

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    21/65

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    22/65

    12

second language (Spolsky, 1998: 45). It has meaning that bilinguals are

able to choose which language he is going to use.

In a society which is remote to another society, caused by geological

condition, this society can still keep it is culture too. It is usually called a

society. But on the contrary, where many societies establish a relationship

with other societies, of course they will undergo cultural contact including

language contact which may result in language phenomenon (Chaer and

    Agustin, 2004:84).

From the explanation above, the writer can conclude that as social

being, one can not be separated from other people, they always need each

other. Meanwhile, the corporation between them depends on

communication and this in turn need a means communication called

language. The function of language is communication. So, people as social

being always communicate to each other.

In other to make good communication, people have to understand

what another said even they have different languages. Every country in the

world has different language to each other, so every people in each country

has own mother tongue that is different to each other. When people who

com from different country meet and make interaction, they can hardly

understand to each other since every speaker has his own mother tongue.

Those reason above show that many people in many communities use

more than language. When a speaker who has one language but can speak

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    23/65

    13

other language, he may be considered as bilingualism or multilingualism

depend on how many language he or she masters.

It means that bilingualism is individual habit to use two languages in

their societies. Meanwhile, multilingualism refers to ability an individual

to use two or more languages in societies. Bilingualism is an important

practical and theoretical problem it is practical importance streams from

    the one language.

Titone (1972) as quoted by Hamers and Blanc (1987: 7) has also

proposed another definition of bilingualism as the individuals capacity to

speak a second language while following the concepts and structures of

that language rather than paraphrasing his or her mother tongue. Hamers

and Blanc (1987: 6) define bilingualism as the state of a linguistic

community in which two languages are in contact with the result that two

codes can be used in the same interaction and that a number of individuals

are bilingual. In other words, since the members of a bilingual

community vary in the capacity of mastering the languages used in the

community, they have to be able to set a condition where they can

communicate effectively. This condition leads them to do code switching

    and code mixing.

In addition, Gumperz (1971: 222) also mentioned that bilingual

people usually use their own idioms for in-group communication and the

common language for their interaction and communication with outsiders.

Originally, the term bilingualism in most dictionaries, glossaries and

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    24/65

    14

handbooks of linguistic is restricted to the equal mastery of two languages.

It is impossible to find an individual who can use two languages in spoken

and written forms properly. In real social life not all of the bilinguals have

the equal competence in the different languages. Some of them may be

receptive in one skill and productive in another.

Multilingualism is the act of using multiple languages by an

individual speaker and a community. A multilingual person is someone

who can communicate in more than one language. Multilingual speakers

outnumber monolingual speakers in the world's population.

Multilingualism is becoming a social phenomenon, it is needed in

    globalization and cultural openness.

Some multilinguals use code-switching, a term that describes the

process of 'swapping' between languages. In many cases, the function of

code switching is that it may be used in order to build intimate

interpersonal relationships among members of bilingual and multilingual

community. Code-switching may also function as a strategy where

proficiency is lacking. Such strategies are common if the vocabulary of

one of the languages is not very elaborated for certain fields or the

speakers have not developed proficiency in certain lexical domains, as in

    the case of immigrant languages.

Even, multilingualism has a mean of the use many and various

language by an individual in the conversation substitute. According

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    25/65

    15

Wardhaugh (2006: 96) states that multilingualism is taken from Granded,

and moving from one language to another in the course of single

conversation is very common. In fact, multilingualism is so usual that

people are hardly conscious that they do speak different languages as

they shift easily from one another. They can not readily tell an outsider

how many languages they speak, and must be suitable quickly

enumerated which language they speak and described how they speak

    each one well.

From all the definition above, the writer can draw a conclusion that

bilingualism is contact with another people in a second language and the

ability to use it in the environment of the native speaker's language.

Basically bilingualism and multilingualism are almost the same. The

bilingualism and multilingualism is one of the backgrounds of code

    switching and code mixing phenomenon.

    C. Bilingualism and Multilingualism in Indonesia

In Indonesia there is growing tendency that being bilingual or

multilingual is encourage, especially by those of the middle and high

class society. The education motivations and culture the most obvious

reasons for the growth of multilingualism when there is no possibility to

use their ability in ordinary conversation way. The switched and mixed to

English have become one characteristic of informal Indonesian language

style. At formal style, the use of foreign or regional languages is limited

    27/65

    17

same type of code without changing it to another because if both speaker

and hearer understand the codes being used, the communication will run

smoothly. In multilingualism society, the speaker may know more than

one code and often present the various codes within his speeches. When

individual members of the society are able to speak more than one

language, switching from one language to another in the same

conversation is a common communicative behavior. Code switching is

the phenomenon when two or more languages exist in a community,

speakers frequently switch from one language to another. (Lee McKay,

    1996:56).

Code switching refers to the alternative use of two or more

languages, varieties of language or even speech style. (Hymes,

1974:103). Poplack (2000, 224) defines code switching as "the

alternation of two languages within a single discourse, sentence or

    constituent".

According to Maraisgan (1983:7) code switching refers to the use of

two languages in the same sentence or discourse. Moreover, Maraisgan

(1983:122) explained that code switching indicates imperfect knowledge

of the grammatical system. It is true that code switching is motivated by

the speakers inability to find word to express what she or he wanted to

say in one of other codes. When the speaker uses language switched, it

does not mean the message obscure but that is an effort to make the

    message understandable.

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    28/65

    18

According to Myers Scotton (2006) the general definition of code

switching is the use of two languages varieties in the same conversation.

A related concept to the code switching is code mixing. Researches often

differentiate between the two terms. One of the differences between the

two terms are the way each of them is used as proposed by Muysken

(2000) that code switching is used for cases in which the two codes

maintain their monolingual features, while code mixing is used for cases

where there is some convergence between the two language. In other

hand, Code switching occurs when bilingual alternate between two

languages during one interaction with another bilingual person while

code switching is the uses word, affixes, phrase and clauses from more

than one language within the same sentences.

According to Myres and Scotton (2006), the most general definition

of code switching is this: the use of two language varieties in the same

conversation. Code-switching can be distinguished from other language

contact phenomena such as loan translation (calques), borrowing, pidgins

and creoles, and transfer or interference. According to Hoffman (1991:

    112),

    1. Types of code switching, there are 5 types:

    a. Emblematic

In this kind of code switching, tags and certain set phrases in one

language are inserted into an utterance otherwise in another. For

    example:

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    29/65

    30/65

    20

    R1 : thinkless do more..haha

    R2 : thinkless pastemore! ;D

    R1 : haha kreatip

    e. Involving a change of pronounciation

This kind of code switching occurs at the phonological level, as

when Indonesian people say an English word, but modify it to

Indonesian phonological structure. For instance, the word

strawberry is said to be stroberi by Indonesian people.

With respect to all definition above, it can be concluded that code

switching is generally the use of at least two languages or varieties of

language within conversation during a speech in bilingual or

    multilingual.

Those are the type of code switching. The people surely also have

functions why he or she switches their native language into English. Here

are the reasons for bilinguals to switch or mix their languages according

    to Hoffman (1991:116):

    2. The Reasons of Code Switching, there are 7 reasons:

    a. Talking about a particular topic

People sometimes prefer to talk about a particular topic in

one language rather than in another. Sometimes, a speaker feels

free and more comfortable to express their emotional feelings in

a language that is not their everyday language.

    b. Quoting somebody else

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    31/65

    21

People sometimes like to quote a famous expression or

saying of some well-known figures. In Indonesian, those

well-known figures are mostly from some English-speaking

countries. Then, because many of the Indonesian people

nowadays are good at English, those famous expressions or

sayings can be quoted intact in their original language.

    c. Being symphatic about something

Usually, when someone who is talking using a language that

is not his native tongue suddenly wants to be symphatic about

something, he/she, either intentionally or unintentionally, will

switch from his second language to his first language. Or, on the

other hand, there are some cases where people feel more

convenient to be symphatic in their second language rather than

    in their first language.

    d. Interjection (Inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors)

Language switching and language mixing among bilingual

or multilingual people can sometimes mark an interjection or

sentence connector. It may happen unintentionally or

    intentionally.

    e. Repetition used for clarification

When a bilingual wants to clarify his/her speech so that it

will be understood more by the listener, he/she can sometimes

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    32/65

    22

use both of the languages that he masters saying the same

utterance (the utterance is said repeatedly).

    f. Intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor

When bilingual talks to another bilingual, there will be lots

of code switching and code mixing occur. It means to make the

content of his/her speech runs smoothly and can be understood

    by the hearer.

    g. Expressing group identity

Code switching and code mixing can also be used to express

group identity. As it has been mentioned previously, the way of

communication of academic people in their disciplinary groupings,

are obviously different from other groups. In other words, the way of

communication of one community is different from the people who

are out of the community (Barnett, 1994: 7).

    CHAPTER III

    METHODOLOGY OF THE RESEARCH

This part presents the method of research, respondents, data resources,

technique of data, and technique of data analysis. Each of them will be briefly

    described as follow:

    A. Methodology of Research

In conducting this qualitative research, the researcher will use

descriptive method to describe the result of the research. The collected data in

the form of members responses to questioners and also study of the books

will be identified and classified into certain categories. And finally, the data

will be presented based on the analysis related to the research questions. This

    is accordance with Lexy,

Qualitative research is a research which aims to getting on to the

phenomenon of what is experienced by the research subject such as behavior,

perception, motivation, action, etc., holistically and describing in the form of

words and language, in a specific context naturally and using the various

    natural methods.

The data that are gotten do not show with statistical quantification or

numbering form but with the explanation in form of status. Code switching in

form of status that consist of word, phrases or sentences. It is made by the 9th

semester students of English Department. This is the reason why the writer

use qualitative approach. The research will be held through it to investigate

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    35/65

    25

natural phenomenon and the write use a case study to get research data.

Analyzing sociolinguistic data involves some counting, explicit or

implicit, in order to answer questions about how often things happen, in

addition to the descriptions that help answer qualitative questions about how

and why things happen (Johnstone, 2000:37). Bodgan and Taylor, (1975: 5), in

Basrowi (2008: 21), defines that qualitative method is research procedures

which produce analysis of written form from people and behaviour can be

    observed.

The study of qualitative research or natural inquiry had done. Firstly

by Williem and Rausch (1969), then the result of the study is explained by

Guba (translated by Sutan Zambi ARBI, 1987:11-17) that the qualitative

    method has assumptions. They are:

    1. Qualitative method is naturalistic inquiry.

    2. How far the naturalistic level is capability of researcher done.

    3. Researcher have to give stimulation to receiver so they can response it.

    4. Researcher have to give response boundary from subject so receiver only

    get the important response.

    5. Naturalistic inquiry, the researcher does not need certain theory but he gets

    interpretation from the real life.

    6. The term of naturalistic is the term that does not modified indications.

This final project uses approach qualitative research. That research

deeply to find some information the writer needs. Then the data arrange

systematically by the writer to answer the statement of the problem.

    36/65

    26

    B. Instrument of the Research

Instrument is one of the most important activities in this research. An

instrument play important role in this research. The instrument of the research

is questionnaire. The writer makes some questions for questionnaire. After

giving questionnaire, the writer makes transcript and analyze the data.

    C. Data Resource

According to the Creswell (1994:148) qualitative data can be collected

through document analysis or visual material. The main data for this research

will be taken from Social Networking Facebook and Respondents.

    1. The Social Networking Facebook

The main data will be collected from Social Networking Facebook.

Almost all of English Department Students are having Facebook. Most of

them connected one to each other by using Facebook. There is also a

group on Facebook which overshadowed all English Department Students

and the officials who are exist on Facebook, this group also has a function

as a forum to share all about English Department. In this group, the big

family is gathering together. It will make the writer easier to find out the

data. The writer will analyze 15 Facebook status.

    2. Respondents

Beside that, the data will be taken from taking a questioner with

the respondents I choose. The respondent is the member of social

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    27

networking Facebook. They are about 15 English Department members

who surely always exists on that social network and also know much

about the language they used on their sentences. Those are in line with

Pattons argument (1990:70) that is cited by Maxwell Purposeful

sampling is strategy in which particular settings, persons, or events are

selected deliberately in order to provide important information that can not

be gotten as well from other choices.

In line with statement above, the researcher should have an

interaction with the subject who is going to be investigated in order to

    answer the research questions.

    3. Technique of Collecting Data

The data will be collected through questionnaire from the

respondents and document analysis. The document analysis will be done

by reading books that have relation with theory, methodology and the

problems that being searched in this research. The researcher will find out

the members ability and reason from the questionnaire. The members

should answer some question given by the researcher.

According to Trott and Bloomer (1998:167) a questioner is a set of

question on a topic or group of topics designed to be answered by a

respondent. The researcher will be used an open questions. In addition,

they (Trott and Bloomer) also said that question is open if it does not

require a one word or curtailed answer. Instead, the respondents must

create their own answers and state them in their own words. After getting

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    28

the document to be analyzed and the transcript of the questioner, the

researcher will find the reason why they used such code switching on their

status. The researcher will analyze those are.

    4. Sample of Data

Here are some data I have been collected from the social networking

    Facebook status.

    5. Technique of Data Analysis

Context analysis is a technique used to analyze the information

gathered from examining the matter. In this research the researcher

    analyzes by these four steps:

    1. The writer take 15 status in Facebook.

    2. The writer will analyze them, how many status that there was code

switching on them and then make the percentage.

    3. Analyze the total number of code switching in every types then make

    the percentage.

    4. Give the questioners to people who make the status that there is code

    CHAPTER IV

    RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter discusses research finding and discussions. The writer

classified and analyzed the data to get goal of research.

    A. Research Findings

Based on the explanation in chapter I, the writer answers the question in

the statement of the problem as follows:

The number of code switching status is 15. It is in Facebook status by the

9th semester students of English Department. The writer finds 15 status of the

9th semester student. The writer calculates the percentage of each code

switching types and reasons as follows:

% of each reasons= Frequency of each reasons of code switching X 100%

All reasons used in code switching status

% of each types = Frequency of each types of code switching X 100%

    31

This chapter analyzes the data through the use of code switching in

Facebook status. Based on the research, the writer finds 15 code switching

in Facebook status. The result of the analysis shows that there were four

types of code switching in the written Facebook status by the 9th semester

students of English Department. They are emblematic, intra-sentential,

intersentential, and involving a change of pronunciation.

Most of the Facebook users used intersentential type of switching

in their Facebook status. It is because the ability of the Facebook user

especially the 9th semester students of English Department cleverer than

non-English Department student in using English language. They added

code switching in his Facebook status to improve their skill in English.

Based on the analysis, there are five reasons of code switching used

by the 9th semester students of English Department in Facebook status.

They are talking about a particular topic, quoting somebody else, being

emphatic about something, interjection (inserting sentence fillers or

sentence connectors), and intention of clarifying the speech content for

    interlocutor.

Interjection and intention of clarifying the speech content for

interlocutor reasons of code switching was mostly used by the 9 th semester

students of English Department in Facebook status. It is because they are

familiar with those interjections. It makes the sentence is intelligible. The

other reason of using code switching is intention of clarifying the speech

for interlocutor. As bilingual student, the 9th semester of English

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    32

department students will use lots of code switching. It means to make the

content of his or her speech runs smoothly and can be understood by the

    listener.

    1. The type of code switching in Facebook status

It could be showed from the proportion and percentage of code

    switching though this following table:

involving a change of pronunciation type is only 1 or 6,6% status.

    2. The reasons of code switching in Facebook status

Based on the research, the writer finds 6 functions of code

switching in the status by the 9th semester students of English

Department in Facebook. They are talking about a particular topic,

quoting somebody else, being symphatic about something,

interjection (inserting sentences fillers or sentences connectors),

repetition used for clarification and intention of clarifying the speech

    content for interlocutor.

After classifying and analyzing the code switching in the status

by the 9th semester students of English Department, the writer

classifies and analyzes them to decide to which category each status

belongs. The percentage of code switching by the 9th semester

students of English Department can described in the following table:

content for interlocutor. The writer finds 4 or 30,8% status in these

category. The talking about a particular topic occur in 2 or 15,4% status.

The third, quoting somebody else is 1 or 7,6% status that include in this

category . Next, being symphatic about something has 2 or 15,4% status.

The description above is the percentage using code switching by the

9th semester students of English Department in Facebook. Status. It has

already explained clearly how many percentage of the status code

switching. In this part, the writer will analyze deeply every status based

on the types and the reason of code switching.

    B. Discussions

    1. Analysis of the Types Code Switching in the Facebook status

In classifying and analyzing, the type of code switching that used

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

based on Apple, R and Musyken, P (1987). Those categories are

emblematic, intra-sentential, intersentential, establishing continuity with

the previous speaker and involving a change of pronunciation.

In order to give explanation about the types of code switching in

Facebook status by the 9th semester students of English Department, it will

    be presented clearly as follow:

    a. Emblematic

    1. "Okayyy! Aku tau apa yang aku mau :D"

The status above includes emblematic type that made by

Facebook user. There is the word which common used in

English such as: okay. This word is always used when we speak

English. This is one kind of code switching that is inserted into

tag or certain tag like okayyy! into an utterance otherwise in

    another.

    2. "Bagus sekali bajunya aku suka banget.Fantastic!"

The status above includes emblematic type that was made

by Facebook user. The response that shown in this sentence is to

express compliment. It is common response usually used in

communication. So, it has been habit. This is one kind of code

switching that is inserted into tag or certain tag like fantastic!

into an utterance otherwise in another.

    3. "Yuhuuuuuu.....!! Makanannya sudah matang, semoga

    henakkkkkkk :))))"

The status above includes emblematic type that made by

Facebook user. There is word "yuhuuuuuu". This is familiar

word. So, the reader will not feel difficulty to understand those

word. This is one kind of code switching that is inserted into tag

or certain tag like uhuuuuuu! into an utterance otherwise in

    another.

    4. "Yeah!Sebentar lagi kita lulus, alhamdulillah yah :')"

The status above includes emblematic type that made by

Facebook user. There is word "yeah". These is familiar word. So,

the reader will not feel difficult to understand this word. This is

one kind of code switching that is inserted into tag or certain tag

like eah!into an utterance otherwise in another.

    b. Intra-sentential

    1. Hmmm.. Yang tadinya deket jadi jauh banget. Silahkan saja, I

did my bestkok.Whatever you do I'm enjoy, jangan sampai

    nyesel aja ya."

The status above includes intra-sentetial type that made by

Facebook user. The sentences are "i did my best" and "whatever

you do I'm enjoy". The reason why they are intra-sentential type

because there are more than two words in English. They also

used common words that usually used by people to

    communicate, especially in English.

    CHAPTER V

    CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter concludes the study in two ways. The first is presentation

conclusions and the second proposing suggestions.

    A. Conclusions

The research conclusion is presented with the data which have been

analyzed in the previous chapter. Two conclusions were drawn:

    1. Types of code switching

The result of the analysis shows that there were four types of code

switching in the Facebook status by the 9th semester students of English

Department. They are emblematic, intra-sentential, intersentential, and

    involving a change of pronunciation.

Most of the Facebook users used intersentential type of switching

in their Facebook status. It is because the ability of the Facebook user

especially the 9th semester students of English Department cleverer than

non-English Department student in using English language. They added

code switching in his Facebook status to improve their skill in English.

    2. Reasons of code switching

Based on the analysis, there are five reasons of code switching

used by the 9th semester students of English Department in Facebook

status. They are talking about a particular topic, quoting somebody else,

being emphatic about something, interjection (inserting sentences fillers or

  • 8/13/2019 Code s in Facebook

    56/65

    46

sentence connectors), and intention of clarifying the speech content for

    interlocutor.

Interjection and intention of clarifying the speech content for

interlocutor reasons of code switching was mostly used by the 9 th semester

students of English Department in Facebook status. It is because they are

familiar with those interjections. It makes the sentence intelligible. The

other reason of using code switching is intention of clarifying the speech

for interlocutor. As bilingual student, the 9th semester of English

department students will use lots of code switching. It means to make the

content of his or her speech runs smoothly and can be understood by the

    listener.

    B. Suggestions

Based on the conclusion above, the writer can give the following suggestions:

    1. For the the 9th semester students of English Department

In using code switching, it is better to use Indonesian and English in

appropriate way. Because, it will become weird when one or both of them

are wrong.. Especially for the 9th semester students of English Department

they should be able to use language in the right way because they should

have been getting a lot of interaction with people.

    2. For the readers

This research is expected to give a better understanding about code

switching and the use of code switching in Facebook status. In addition,

the writer hopes this research gives the reader an idea of applying the
