Technical University-Sofia (TUS) COURSE STATUS IN THE CURRICULUM The course is a compulsory for both full-time and part-time students in the subject of Electrical power engineering and electrical equipment at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, TUS, for receiving the BSc degree. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE The introduce students to the methods and principles of operation, characteristics and adjustment of relay protections concerning the basic electrical equipment in electrical power systems: electrical networks, transformers, generators, busses and motors. DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: The course includes basic types of protection – over-current, over-current directional, distance and differential. These protections are taught in connection with distribution and transmission networks. Protections of generators, transformers, electrical machines and buses are considered in relation with their typical faults and faulty modes. Lectures comprise protections of particular relays, relay protection units and systems for auxiliary supply and these are looked at in detail in Laboratory practice. In this Laboratory practice the students acquire knowledge and obtain skills in testing the adjustment of relay protections of our power distribution system. PREREQUISITES: Basic knowledge of electrical machines and apparatus, electrical power supply, electric power production and electrical equipment, and transients in networks. TEACHING METHODS : Lectures given by means of multimedia. Laboratory practices are conducted in accordance with the Laboratory manual; written reports are required from students. The reports are checked and rated by the lecturers. All necessary written materials concerning the course are given the students in advance. A student is supplied for each laboratory practice unit with a particular literature. METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Written reports discussion (20%); written examination at the end of the semester (80%). COURSE STATUS IN THE CURRICULUM The course is a compulsory for both full-time and part-time students in the subject of Electrical power engineering and electrical equipment at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, TUS, for receiving the BSc degree. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE The introduce students to the methods and principles of operation, characteristics and adjustment of relay protections concerning the basic electrical equipment in electrical power systems: electrical networks, transformers, generators, busses and motors. COURSE STATUS IN THE CURRICULUM: Compulsory course for the student specialty Electrical Power Generation and Electrical Equipment BEng programme of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: The aim of the course is the students may by self to work with other types electric equipment, control and automation of the machines and mechanisms.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: The course studies the special features of different mechanisms and units, the load charts building, the methods for choosing the engines power for given mechanisms and units, the control and automation circuits. The biggest attention is separated of the industrial mechanisms that are worked in all industrial enterprises and electric plants and are used for details, machines, bulk materials, liquid materials and gaseous materials transport. Such mechanisms are cranes, lifts, telfers, conveyors, excavating machines, metal working machines, pumps, funs, compressors, big consumers of electric energy as electric arc furnaces, devices for electrolysis and rolling mills. The course considers the special features of these consumers, theirs loads, the rational working regimes.

PREREQUISITES: Electrical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Machines, Automation of the Electric Drive, Electrical Apparatus.

TEACHING METHODS: Lectures, using slides and other visual facilities, laboratory work in teams with protocols and course project with description preparation and defence.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Written examination in the end of seventh semester (80%), laboratories (20%), defence of course project.

COURSE STAUS IN THE CURRICULUM: It is required course for full-time and part-time bachelors degree students of specialty "Electric Power Engineering and Electrical Equipment" of Technical University of Sofia, Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: The aim of the course is to make acquainted with the basic requirements and principles of design, build and exploitation of electric power supply systems in industry, companies and e.t.c.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: The course includes basic subjects related to structure and characteristic of electric supply systems; methods for estimation of the loads; determination of the position, numbers and powers of the substations in the plants; the estimation and ways to increase reliability of supply systems; low voltage installations design; characteristics of special installations; the choice of switching and protection apparatus in low voltage installations. The essential parts of study are problems of increase the power factor of the electric loads and the influence of power quality over normal work of loads and consumption of electric energy.

PREREQUISITES: It is necessary the knowledge of "Theoretical Electrotechnics", “Electrical Apparatus " “Electrical Networks and Systems”, “Electric Power Plants and Substation” and “Relay protection”.

TEACHING METHODS: Lectures read with the help of visual facilities. On the basis of the theoretic material laboratory exercises are conducted with the help of stands and experimental settings. They create conditions for gaining practical knowledge and experience.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Written examination in the end of seventh semester.

email: [email protected] Technical University-Sofia (TUS) COURSE STATUS IN THE CURRICULUM The course is a compulsory for both full-time students in the subject of Electrical power engineering and electrical equipment at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, TUS, for receiving the BSc degree. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE The introduce students to the basic managerial functions and their application to the management of the Electric Power Systems (EPS). The first aim is to create essential managerial skills and second – to stress on the importance of relevant usage of this knowledge for the purposes of EPS functioning and development. Special attention is given to the new realities namely deregulation, DSM, electricity markets. DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: The course includes basic managerial functions and activities and shows the most important among them for the functioning and development of the EPS. Students are introduced to the specifics of management of such unique, huge and complex system like EPS. The aims, reasons and problems of deregulation are treated, as well as modern developments such as market for electric energy, demand response (DSM) and others. Different topics are illustrated during seminars with examples. PREREQUISITES: none TEACHING METHODS: The lectures are illustrated with slides. When it is appropriate the lectures given by means of multimedia, and the seminars – with relevant examples. Every student is assigned to prepare an essay. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: Students to learn the analytical techniques for stability between two major areas of power systems with and without power system protection.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: In this course are studied: Steady-state three-phase performance characteristics of synchronous machines and power transfer limits. Transient performance characteristics of synchronous machines. Power system stability: steady state, transient, and dynamic. Excitation systems and impact on system stability and supplementary stabilizing signals. Discrete supplementary controls for stability. FACTS.

PREREQUISITES: General knowledge in theory of mathematics, mechanics, electrical engineering, electrical machines and fault current analysis is necessary. TEACHING METHODS: Lectures, using media projector, laboratory and course work, protocol and course work description preparation and defence.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Written exam at the end of the 7-th term (60%), laboratories (40%).

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: The aim of the course is to extend the knowledge in the field of the robots and robotized systems and their application in different industrial processes.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: The course gives basic information about robots and robotized systems: classification, application, generations of the robots, structural and cinematic circuits, type of drivers. The questions that are considered are connected with electromechanical drivers, static and dynamic loads, control systems for robots and groups of robots, sensors, clamp devices. The laboratory work gives knowledge of testing methods, infusion and technical exploitation of drivers for industrial robots.

PREREQUISITES: Electrical engineering, Physics, Electrical Machines, Electrical Equipment, Automation of the Electric Drive.

TEACHING METHODS: Lectures, using slides and other visual facilities, laboratory work in teams with protocols and seminars including solution of the problems about electrical equipment for industrial robots design.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Written examination in the end of seventh semester (70%), laboratories (15%), tutorials (15%).

COURSE STATUS IN THE CURRICULUM: This is a discipline of preference for Full-time and Extra students of specialty ‘Electric power generation and electrical equipment’ from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering - Technical University – Sofia, intended for the educational-qualification degree “Bachelor”.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: The aim of the education in “Electric Equipment of the Electric Transports Vehicles” is to give to the students knowledge about the specific parts of the electric equipment’s electric vehicles. To learn mechanical construction of the transport vehicles and methods to delivering a traction’s power.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: In the discipline are regarded themes/subjects which are directly connected to the specialty profile “Electric Transport”, such as base elements of electric part in Electric Vehicles – traction motors, traction devices, power converters and etc. Specific processes in power converters and traction motors.

PREREQUISITES: The knowledge in “Electric Machines and Apparatus”, “Power electronics”, “Base of Automation” and “Base of Traction” is obligatory.

TEACHING METHODS: Lectures, which are around with the help of visual materials and slides. Laboratory Practical exercises, which are followed under the tutors instructions; protocol of the exercises, which are prepared by the students and controlled by the tutor. Tutorials with examples of calculation procedures of equipment parameters.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Written examination at the end of seventh semester.

COURSE STATUS IN THE CURRICULUM: Compulsory course for full-time and correspondence students, speciality “Electric Power Engineering and Electrical Equipment”, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Technical University-Sofia, educational-qualification degree “Bachelor”.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: To teach the students the most important systems for automation of power plants, to adopt practical skills for investigation of concrete automatic systems, to make familiar with different references. This will allow the students on theirs own to extend their knowledge and to learn more in the field of automation of electric power systems.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: The main topics included concern requirements, schematic diagrams, and principles of operation and adjustment of typical devices, used for automation of the processes in electric power engineering systems. Emergency automation etc. Principles and devices for automatic control of excitation, frequency and active (real) power of synchronous generators. Synchronization of generators in parallel connection. Laboratory works for acquiring practical skills for investigation of automatic devices and visualization of their action.

PREREQUISITES: Mathematics, Theoretical Electrical Engineering, Automation of Electric Power Engineering Systems and Electrical Machines.

TEACHING METHODS: Classical lectures with slides as visual aids. Laboratory works using laboratory manuals. Special laboratory equipment for laboratory works. Computers for process modelling. Each student prepares a protocol for his laboratory work. Protocols are checked and estimated by the lecturer.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Written examination (80%). Laboratory works assessment is also taken into account (20%).

COURSE STATUS IN THE CURRICULUM: Mandatory course for full-time and part-time students, enrolled in the degree program “Electrical Power Engineering and Electrical Fitting-up” at the Electrical Faculty of TU-Sofia, who are pursuing the academic degree of Bachelor.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: The students enrolled in the degree program will acquire knowledge on theoretical issues and practical problems related to the design of electrical installations and switchgear in Electric Power Plants and Transformer Stations.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: Topics, directly related to the students’ degree programs are scrutinized. The lecture material is based on the previously taken special topic courses “Electrical Part of Electric Power Plants”, “Short Circuits”, “Electric Networks and Systems”, etc. Encompassed in the lectures are fundamental design principles and methodology, choice of electrical schemes (main and auxiliary) of Electric Power Stations and Transformer Stations, as well as design of open-air, enclosed, and complex distribution installations are considered. The seminar exercises contribute a practical dimension to the acquired theoretical knowledge. The course project gives an opportunity to creatively implement the theoretical and practical skills in resolving concrete design problems.

PREREQUISITES: Knowledge of “Electrical Part of Electric Power Plants and Transformer Stations”, “Short Circuits”, “Electric Networks and Systems” is required.

TEACHING METHODS: Lectures, presented with the assistance of visual aids, projection slides, presentation boards.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Combined grade from assignments at the end of the semester.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: The objective of the course is to introduce students to the following topics: Directives and standards for power electrical stations and substation systems control Means for distance control systems in power electrical stations and substation Devices for generation, protection of control signals and displaying information used in the distance control systems Automatic and manual control systems used in the distance control systems Modern software for design and explorer of the distance control systems Important objective of the course is to make ready the students for jointly usage the knowledge obtained from different theoretical disciplines when they decide a professional task. Further, the students are teaching how to use specific literature resources. DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE:The main topics examined in this course are as follows: Basic knowledge of structures of distance control systems designed for electric power stations and substations Fundamentals of information theory Principles of collecting and carrying of information Information processing systems Display devices in dispatcher control point Control systems of citizen users power flow Auxiliary means for teaching it’s the CAD systems, real schemas and lab models, multimedia and demo-simulations. PREREQUISITES: It is expected that students have had previous course in Electrical parts in power plant and substations, Electrical network and systems, Relay protection etc. TEACHING METHODS: lectures, tutorials, group seminars or workshop, projects. In the seminars work students obtain knowledge and skills about investigation of devices and subsystems of electrical distance control systems. In projects every student solves a distinct problem relevant to design of system for distance control of local electrical object - point of power plants. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: The aim of the study is the students to get knowledge of rates of work and operation exploitation of the basic electrical equipment in the power-stations and their auxiliary systems. The knowledge and the skills are necessary in the work in electric power- stations, set up, putting in operation and repair organizations DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: The themes in the course are strictly connected to the profile of the specialty taught - Rates of work and peculiarities in operation exploitation in synchronous generators, power transformers, auxiliary motors and electrical outfits in the power stations. Questions about the arrangement and operation of systems for auspicious supply are considered. Problems of the elimination of damages in the electrical section of the power stations are overlooked. PREREQUISITES: For taking this course is necessary one to have knowledge in the disciplines “Electrical apparatus”, “Electrical machines”, “Electrical section of the electric power-stations” and others. TEACHING METHODS: The lections are taught with the help of auxiliary devices, details and units from electrical equipment and slides. Laboratory works are done on real and functioning models with the use of digital and computer technique. The students make protocols, which are checked by the lecturer. COURSE STATUS IN THE CURRICULUM: An election course for compulsory and extra-mural students in the subject “Electric-power system and electric equipment“ specialisation “Electric-power system” in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in TU-Sofia about the educational-qualification level “bachelor” AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: The aim of studying the course “Apparatus of relay protection and automation” is to help the students gain deeper and wider knowledge about the principles and the special features for making different types of apparatus for relay protection and automation. These knowledge can help them fast and competent solve questions about the choice and the expedience of the use of the apparatus of relay protection and automation in the practice, depending not only on the technical characteristics, but also on his functionality and structure. DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE:

Themes, concerned with the structural and functional description of the elements, which form the apparatus of relay protection and automation, are considered. Ways for gathering and transforming the inner information, for making the measuring devices for the different apparatus of relay protection and control, are explored. Special attention is given to the use of the digital technique for realization of the apparatus of relay protection and automation and different questions about the special features in machining the digital information and algorithms are considered. PREREQUISITES: Knowledge for Electrical measurement, Electronics, Relay protection and Mathematics are necessary. TEACHING METHODS: Lectures are performed with visual aids like lantern – slides. The laboratory works are hold, according to elaborated handbooks and after that every student should do his own report, which will be checked from the lector. METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Writing exam in the end of the semester (80%). Laboratory works assessment is also taken into account (20%).

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: To teach the students the most important systems for automation of power plants, to adopt practical skills for investigation of concrete automatic systems, to make familiar with different references. This will allow the students on theirs own to extend their knowledge and to learn more in the field of automation of electric power systems.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: The main topics included concern requirements, schematic diagrams, and principles of operation and adjustment of typical devices, used for automation of the processes in electric power engineering systems. Emergency automation etc. Principles and devices for automatic control of excitation, frequency and active (real) power of synchronous generators. Synchronization of generators in parallel connection. Laboratory works for acquiring practical skills for investigation of automatic devices and visualization of their action.

PREREQUISITES: Mathematics, Theoretical Electrical Engineering, Automation of Electric Power Engineering Systems and Electrical Machines.

TEACHING METHODS: Classical lectures with slides as visual aids. Laboratory works using laboratory manuals. Special laboratory equipment for laboratory works. Computers for process modelling. Each student prepares a protocol for his laboratory work. Protocols are checked and estimated by the lecturer.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Written examination (80%). Laboratory works assessment is also taken into account (20%).

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: The aim of the discipline is acquiring of theoretical and practical knowledge of problems, concerning design of electric air transmission lines. This will allow the students to work in designer’s and building companies, and exploitation enterprises in the field of research, design, building and maintenance of electric air transmission lines.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: This course discusses issues, related to the mechanical measuring of the elements of the electric air transmission lines. The wire’s behavior in between towers and in stretch fields under normal and emergency conditions is examined in details. The course defines models and conditions, related to the assessment of main measurements of the post, in terms of electrical parameters and the force, acting on them. The course discusses the choice conditions of the isolation constructions and principles of electrical wiring automated design.

PREREGUISITES: Basic knowledge of mechanics and electrical networks and systems is necessary.

TEACHING METHODS: Lectures, group seminars of workshop and projects.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: At the end of the course the students are expected to have knowledge and problem solving skills about the structure, design, development and operation of electric power networks in urban areas.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: The course considers the structure, design, development and operation of electric power distributive networks in urban areas. The problems addressed are determination of designing electrical loads, selection of proper schemes for distribution networks, optimal location for the domestic and public consumers’ transformer substations, electrical design calculations for supplying cable lines, reliability and economic assessments, etc.

PREREQUISITES: The course is directly related and builds upon the main course “Electric Power Networks and Systems”.

TEACHING METHODS: Classic lectures. Lecturing by PC presentations is possible as well. The tutorials illustrate solutions of real design and operation problems and contribute for the elaboration of the course project. The laboratory works are performed by means of power system simulation software packages.

METHOD OF ASSESMENT: Two control works at the middle and at the end of the semester weight 80 % to the final mark. The resting 20% weight the laboratory and seminar works. The course project is marked on the bases of elaboration quality and the oral defense, independently from the main course.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: At the end of the course the students are expected to have knowledge and problem solving skills about the electric power system operation, power system dispatch, middle and short term planning of the operation modes of electric power systems, principles and technologies for their control. They will receive an idea about the basic principles for interconnected operation applied in the ENTSO-E system. DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: The course deals with the planning and control of operation modes of the power systems. The structure and tasks of the power system dispatch control are presented. The base models and mathematical programming methods for operation modes problems solution are addressed – the load forecasting, economic dispatch, unit commitment, hydro-thermal coordination, reactive power and voltage levels optimization, optimal power flow and state estimation problems are introduced. Some topics concerning the interconnected operation and development of power systems are discussed as well. TEACHING METHODS: Classic lectures. Lecturing by PC presentations is possible as well. The laboratory works are performed by means of power system simulation software packages. The tutorials are held in the form of problem solving and discussions after the presentation and explanations on the topic by the assistant/professor.

PREREQUISITES: It is necessary to have knowledge of calculus, electric power networks and systems, hydro and thermal power equipment, electrical machines. METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: The written examination at the end of the semester weights 70 % to the final mark. Another 30% weight the laboratory works and tutorials.

COURSE STATUS IN THE CURRICULUM: This is a discipline of preference for Full-time and Extra students of specialty 'Electric Power generation and electrical equipment' from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering - Technical University - Sofia, intended for the educational-qualification degree "Bachelor".

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: The aim of the education in "Traction Substations and Overhead Contact Nets (Catenary)" is to give to the students knowledge about the different designs of traction substation and overhead contact nets that take part in the electric power supply of the electric transport, about the possibilities of calculation apparatus, to evaluate contact net' behavior in different climatic conditions - temperature, wind, ice and combination. In this way the students build up knowledge to evaluate and to make choice of commutation equipment, current conducting devices, contact wires, ropes, insulators and masts and to design contact nets. The students might utilize these knowledges in their master degree course and also in their direct work in the field of electric transport.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: In the discipline are regarded themes/subjects which are directly connected to the specialty profile "Electric transport", such as Electrical equipment of traction substations, Methods for calculation of the thermal and electro-dynamic loads of the devices, Methods for calculation of the mechanical loads due to extension, wind and ice for different kinds of overhead contact nets (catenary), the Choice and the Design of the further devices, the Static and the Dynamic interactions between contact net and current collector (pantograph), and also construction particularities.

PREREQUISITES: The knowledge in "High Mathematics", "Theoretical Electro-technique", "High Voltage Techniques", "Mechanics" and "Material Knowledge" is obligatory.

TEACHING METHODS: The lectures are led around with the help of visual materials and slides. The Laboratory Practical exercises are followed under the tutors instructions, the protocols of the exercises are prepared by the students and controlled by the tutor. The Students draw up schematic variants of traction substations and design different contact nets and auxiliary devices in a Course project.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Written examination at the end of eight semester.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: The aim of the course is students to obtain the practical ability for designing of the electrical parts of ERS and to obtain knowledge of the practical methods.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: The subject treats questions connected with the design of the electrical parts of ERS for city and rail electrical transport, like as calculation of the power of ERS and tractives motors, project or control, start and braking systems. Design of high voltage and control systems of ERS.

PREREQUISITES: Knowlege in Mechanics, Electrical engineering, Electronics, Electrical motors, Electrical equipment of ERS, Electrical drive, Mathematic, Physics, Electrical transport.

TEACHING METHODS: Lectures and tutorials in which every student designs ERS.

It is paid an emphasized attention on algorithm decisions in analog, digital and computer realization
