COCHIN (KOCHI), INDIA Arrive: 0800 Saturday, 27 February

Onboard: 1700 Thursday, 3 March

Brief Overview: India is one of the

oldest civilizations in the world,

dating back to 3,000 BC. It is also,

currently, one of the largest and

most populous countries in the

world, as well as the point of origin

for four of the world’s major

religions: Hinduism, Buddhism,

Jainism, and Sikhism. India prides

itself on being the world’s largest

democracy, having gained its

independence in the 1940s under

the peaceful leadership of Mahatma

Ghandi. It is an extremely diverse

country, with vast differences in

geography, climate, culture,

language and ethnicity. As it opens

up to a globalized world, India

retains a depth of history and

intensity of culture that make it an extraordinary destination. SAS voyagers often identify India as the “turning point” of

the world voyage. It is a country that takes them out of their comfort zone, challenges their senses, and awakens a sense

of beauty and appreciation for humanity that is unparalleled. While in India, visit the bustling city of Delhi, witness the

splendor of the Taj Mahal, and float down the River Ganges, experiencing a centuries-old religious practice. Pilgrims line

the banks of the river at dawn each day to immerse themselves in the holy waters and pray to release their souls from the

cycle of rebirth. Closer to Cochin, you can explore the backwaters of Kerala, spend a day in a local village or visit an

Ayurveda center as a means to a healthy lifestyle. India is an unforgettable experience, regardless of where your travels

take you. This enigma of a country will leave you longing for more. Kochi or Cochin, it’s a wonderful place to explore!

The best way to discover the

culturally rich city of Kochi is by

bike! Start your adventure at the

Next, cycle to the Dutch Cemetery,

India, and learn about the Dutch

and English migrants who settled

in India during the 17th to 19th

centuries.

Continue your way north towards the port, and see the large, suspended Chinese

fishing nets, introduced by traders from the court of Kublai Khan. Along the coast,

you’ll pass the bustling fish market and Kochi’s main bazaar, where you’ll find tea,

spices, dried fruit, garlic and cashew nuts. Breathe in the pungent aroma of ginger,

cardamom and cloves, and wander the streets to browse the various goods on sale.

Then cycle to the Dutch Palace, and admire the beautiful murals depicting Hindu temple art. Sip a cup of chai tea while you

enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. Hop back on your bike and cycle along the coast toward the center of town. Get a glimpse of

the life of the dhobis, a caste group found in India who specializes in washing clothes.

KOC 100-101 Highlights of Kochi Half-Day

Explore the many facets of

India’s colonial past

through your tour of Fort

Cochin and Matancherry.

You will see architectural

and religious influences

from Portuguese, Dutch,

and British rule, and also

learn about the history of

the Jewish community in

Kochi.

Begin with a visit to the town of Mattancherry to see the Dutch Palace. Designed

in oriental style, Mattancherry Palace was originally built by the Portuguese and

presented to the king of Cochin, Veera Kerala Varma, in the year 1555 AD.

Imagine yourself as a medieval trader as you walk through the Jewish Street –

lined on both sides by picture-postcard houses and shops selling everything from spices to antiques. At the end of the street

you come upon the oldest Jewish Synagogue in India, built in 1568.Next, you will head to Fort Cochin to learn about the history

of Christianity in Kerala as you see St. Francis Church, the first European Church to be built in India. Then understand ancient

trading patterns between India and China as you view the Chinese Fishing Nets, or Cheenavala, hung mid-air along the coast.

settlement ever since

Cochin Harbor was discovered.

European Church to be built in India. The history of this Church reflects the

colonial struggle of European powers in India, from the 15th to 20th Centuries. You will also see Chinese Fishing Nets, a

KOC 405-103 IMPACT: Kranti Workshop in Mumbai

4 days/3 nights

Mumbai is the capital city of the Indian state of

Maharashtra and the financial, commercial

and entertainment capital of India. Participants

in this program will experience Mumbai

through the eyes of women and girls who are

living at the Kranti house. Two young women

from Kranti house sailed on the Spring 2015

voyage.

Participants will spend 3.5 days engaging in

various activities with this NGO that empowers

girls from the red-light district to become

agents of social change. Activities include

interactive sessions with women that are sex

workers and victims of child trafficking, group

work projects (For example, one group to work

on an income generation plan, one to help make the Kranti home more

environmentally sustainable), hear guest speakers, and Q & A. Both days the group

will have lunch prepared by the Kranti moms. On both nights there is free time after

dinner and the possibility for a night out with the Kranti girls to see a movie, play or hear local music. A drive-through “tour” of

the Red-light area. During this time, students will remain in taxis while driving through the area but must be aware that taking

photos or having cameras visible is a safety risk - many journalists have had their taxis blocked, cameras snatched, etc. While

the Kranti girls and staff would be with students at all times in the red-light area, students must understand these risks.

Please NOTE: Participants will stay overnight at the Kranti house. The accommodations are simple – a mattress with a

sleeping bag. Participants will need to bring their own sleeping bags. There are 4 bathrooms in the house. The house is

conveniently located with Starbucks 1.5 km away, a rickshaw ride of 30 rupees. Mumbai is a great place for students -

cheap, fun, and exciting! This includes spas, nightclubs, hookah bars, etc. However since the students will be staying in space

shared with Kranti girls, students CAN NOT consume alcohol during their entire stay. We have planned for a midnight return

time, and students must abide by this in order for Kranti to avoid conflict with our neighbors.

KOC 406-201 Jaipur & Taj Mahal 4 days/3 nights

Here is your opportunity to see

not only Agra and the Taj Mahal

but also Jaipur the “pink city”

and Delhi. Jaipur, or the City of

Victory, was founded by

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in

1727. It is the only city in the

world symbolizing the nine

divisions of the Universe through

nine rectangular sectors sub-

dividing it. Situated on the banks

of the Yamuna River, the Taj

Mahal is the famous symbol of

Emperor Shah Jehan’s love for his wife Mumatz Mahal. It took 20,000 artisans

22 years to complete this poignant mausoleum with its superb inlay work in

marble and soapstone. Delhi is a near perfect blend of the ancient and the

modern and is seamlessly divided in two parts: Old Delhi designed by the

Mughals and New Delhi designed during English rule and also known as

“Lyutens” Delhi.

After an early morning flight, arrive in Delhi and visit the famous minaret of Delhi, Qutub Minar. The soaring conical tower is an

exquisite example of Indo-Islamic Afghan architecture. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and then proceed to Old Delhi to visit

the resplendent “mosque of Friday” Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India. Other sites you will see in Old Delhi include the

Red Fort and Raj Ghat. During your orientation tour of New Delhi you will drive past some of the magnificent monuments

designed by Sir Edwin Landseer Lyutens, such as India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan (President Palace). In the evening visit

and train together following strict rules on everything from what

they can eat to what they can do in their spare time. Return to

the hotel for breakfast before your flight to Agra. On arrival,

Group A participants will head out for a visit of the impressive

Agra Fort, where an elderly Emperor Shah Jahan, imprisoned by his son, watched from a distance the fulfillment of his life’s

dream, the building of the Taj Mahal. Participants in Group B will go directly to the Taj Mahal for an afternoon/evening visit.

The next morning Group A will have a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal while Group B has a sunrise visit to Agra Fort. Return to the

hotel for breakfast before the drive to Delhi. You will have a packed lunch on the way to Delhi and then precede for a tour of

Old Delhi beginning with the resplendent “mosque of Friday”, Jama Masjid, which is the largest mosque in India. You will also

drive past the Red Fort and Raj Ghat, a memorial to Father of the Nation Mahatama Gandhi. That evening, enjoy dinner and

overnight at the hotel.

Please Note: In order to allow you to see the maximum number of sites across three cities, this trip has a good deal of travel.

You will take five flights and two five-hour car rides, so make sure to check your travel stamina against the itinerary.

KOC 407-201 Sri Lanka – UNESCO World Heritage Site 4 days/3 nights

Here is a unique opportunity

to explore three of Sri

Lanka’s seven UNESCO

World Heritage Sites:

Dambulla with its acclaimed

frescos; Sigiriya and the

1200 steps to the top

providing amazing views over

the Sri Lankan countryside;

and Polonnaruwa the ancient capital.

In the heart of Sri Lanka the extraordinary site of Sigiriya – the ‘Lion Mountain’, is

considered by some to be the eighth wonder of the world. The lofty rock

dominating the neighbouring plateau consists of an ancient castle used by King

Kasyapa as a hideout in the 5th century from his brother who sought vengeance..

Polonnaruwa, the famous medieval capital of Ceylon.Polonnaruwa became Sri

Lanka’s royal medieval capital in 1073 and remained Sri Lanka’s capital until the

late 13th century. Today, the ancient city’s ruins remain in remarkably good

repair with its great ruins of palaces, treasuries, meeting halls and temples.

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is situated northwest of the town of Kegalle, halfway between the present capital Colombo

and the ancient royal residence Kandy in the hills of central Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka wildlife

department in a 25 acre coconut property near the Maha Oya river. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford

care and protection to the many orphaned Elephants found in the jungle. As of 2003, there were 65 elephants. The orphanage

is very popular and visited daily by many Sri Lankan and foreign tourists. The main attraction is clearly to observe the bathing

elephants from the tall river bank as it allows visitors to observe the herd interacting socially, bathing and playing.

Please Note: This exclusive trip is expressly designed for lifelong learners and

others who have already been to India. This trip requires a Sri Lankan visa. The Sri

Lankan visa must be purchased in advance for all nationalities and can easily be

done on line at www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa/. Order of activities subject to change.

KOC 117-301 IMPACT: Missionaries of Charity Half-Day

“We ourselves feel that

what we are doing is

just a drop in the ocean.

But the ocean would be

less because of that

missing drop.”

–Mother Theresa

You may think of

Mother Theresa’s words

when you take part in

this visit to the

Missionaries of Charity Center in Cochin. While you may only be there for a few

short hours, make the most of this opportunity to live her philosophy that “peace

begins with a smile”. The center of the Missionaries of Charity was founded by

Mother Theresa in 1950, in Calcutta, in order to help the ‘poorest of the poor’.

Since then, the order has expanded and now counts 4,500 nuns spread over more than 600 missions across 133 countries.

At the Cochin Center, you’ll meet Sister Cheryl and the nuns and lay people who take care of the daily needs of severely

handicapped children. As you learn about the operation of this facility and share a meal with the children, take the time to

reflect on Mother Theresa’s legacy and your personal ‘drop in the ocean’.

Every day, thousands of children

in India are forced to live in the

streets, denied of their

fundamental right to food,

shelter and education and

subjected to physical abuse and

exploitations. To put an end to

this social injustice, Mr. Jose

Maveli founded the Janaseva

street children. His first step was

to provide scholarships and educational materials to the children from poor

families and then, in 1997, the organization started to give out lunch to about

300 children. The project spread to several schools and in time more than 600

students were given food every day.Upon arrival, tour the center accompanied by

the Matron followed by cultural entertainment by the children. Later, enjoy a

traditional vegetarian Kerala lunch, with the children, served on banana leaves.

After lunch, there will be time for games and sports with the children such as volley ball and basketball.
