Local partnerships, local investments

Coca-Cola was introduced to Asia at the beginning of the 20th century. Today our products are within reach of over three billion people in nearly 40 countries across the region. In addition to our core brands – Coca-Cola, diet Coke, Fanta and Sprite – we offer an ever-increasing range of high-quality brands in Asia, including fruit juices, fruit drinks, waters, energy drinks, sports drinks and ready-to-drink teas and coffees. Our business is made up of a system of partnerships between The Coca-Cola Company and local bottlers, and our investment in local economies totals billions of dollars. In India, for example, Coca-Cola is one of the country’s top direct international investors.

Our investment in people and infrastructure creates both economic growth and opportunity – all the way from the companies sourcing the raw materials, to the suppliers of packaging materials, through to the shopkeepers retailing the final product. These thousands of individual connections amount to a powerful local multiplier effect. A recent study, for example, by economists from Beijing University, Qinqhua University and the University of South Carolina showed that for every direct job in the Coca-Cola system in China, another 30 jobs were created in the local economy.

Vietnam pushcarts program

In Vietnam, we’re working with the Vietnamese Women’s Union to help economically disadvantaged women build sustainable livelihoods. In the first phase of this partnership, 2,000 women in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are being given custom-built pushcarts to sell a selection of ice-cold Coca-Cola beverages. We’re providing all the women with an initial quantity of discounted product and detailed product and sales training to help get their new microbusinesses off the ground.

Says Trinh Hoang Yen, a new pushcart owner in Ho Chi Minh City, “So far, so good. It gives me a steady income and I’m my own boss. It suits me just fine.”

Coca-Cola first generationscholarship program

From China’s mountainous Xinjiang province, Ayinu Hayiman dreamed of attending university, but had no chance of paying the tuition on her own. With the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship Program, which supports rural students who are the first in their immediate families to attend university, she had this chance. “After getting this scholarship,” she says,

“I began to think that I would eventually like to give something back, to do something for my people.”

Since 1997, our Little Red Schoolhouse program in the Philippines has set up 50 three-classroom schools in remote areas. The program, rolled out in partnership with the Philippine Department of Education, has touched the lives of over 500,000 children and over 12,000 teachers nationwide.

Supporting national efforts to promote youth education and social welfare, the Coca-Cola Foundation Indonesia has been working with PAKTA, a local NGO, to develop public libraries as learning centers for local communities. This nationwide project includes provision of reading materials, library manuals, facilities and technical assistance, as well as intensive training programs for library staff. The learning centers have evolved into hubs for disseminating information and promoting community awareness on such critical issues as environmental protection and HIV/AIDS.

“We should have more places like this, especially for children of poor families to help them achieve their dreams,” says Mrs. Soehartono, parent of a learning center student in Rawamangun, East Jakarta.

Our partnership with the China Youth Development Foundation has continued for more than 10 years. We’ve been working with them on providing educational opportunities and resources for students of all ages in rural China, from primary school students to university students. This has included:

• Constructing and equipping 52 Coca-Cola Project Hope Schools and 100libraries, benefiting more than 60,000 students and their teachers in remotevillages in rural China

• Supporting almost 700 university scholarships for rural students at 50 majoruniversities across China

• Establishing 20 Coca-Cola e-learning centers bringing connectivity and IT trainingto tens of thousands of students and their teachers

• Training programs for teachers and school principals

• A financial contribution of over US$3m to date

In Malaysia, we’ve partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Education to spearhead local efforts to bridge the digital divide. The project supports the Malaysian government’s vision of the knowledge-driven economy and the Ministry of Education’s drive to bring e-learning resources to Malaysian classrooms and communities. “Learning is now much more fun and entertaining,” says Zulkiah Hanum Hamdan, a secondary school student in Gerik, Perak, a rural area in north-central Malaysia.

Responsible stewardship of the environment is important to us. Always has been, always will be. The Coca-Cola Environmental Management System, what we call “eKOsystem,” commits us to continually move our business toward sustainability by striving to consume fewer natural resources and recovering and reusing resources more extensively.

In India, for example, we’ve invested US$20 million in environmental technologies in 43 plants over three years as we work towards reducing water, electricity and fuel consumption. All our bottling plants in India, meanwhile, are incorporating rooftop rainwater harvesting projects to help local communities collect and store rainwater.

Coca-Cola and its bottling partners in Japan created the Coca-Cola Environmental Education Foundation in 1994 to recognize and financially support individuals and volunteer groups involved in providing environmental education to Japanese youth. In 1996, we opened a Coca-Cola ecology school offering children, parents and teachers the chance to learn more about nature firsthand. The school trains new environmental instructors as

“rangers,” who share knowledge about environmental issues.

In the Philippines, our employee volunteers have joined green groups to create urban forests by planting trees to counteract air pollution and help protect Manila’s primary source of drinking water, La Mesa dam and watershed.

When we established Australia’s leading recycling process for PET beverage containers, recovery rates were limited because people, though well-intentioned, put other household materials into curbside recycling bins. So we teamed up with Resource New South Wales (RNSW) and other business organizations to create a consumer education program for local communities.

According to Lynda Lewis, education officer at RNSW, “We gave people a renewed sense of ownership of the recycling process and showed them how small things they do can have a positive effect on the environment.”
