Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back for what promises to be a busy Term 4. I hope that you were able to enjoy the opportunity to spend some time with your children over the last couple of weeks. With Kindy and High School Transition and End of Year Concert being held in Week 9, I am sure that the term will fly through. This term we welcome Sam Schiller as the Science and HASS NIT Teacher in the R, 1/2, 3/4 and 6/7 class. External School Review (ESR) In week 2, Cobdogla Primary is having an External School Review. The ESR is an evidence-informed external evaluation of the school’s capacity to improve student learning. A review panel consisting of a Review Officer and Review Principal conducts the ESR. The Review panel will conduct an on-site visit on Tuesday and Wednesday and the visit will include Interviews with students, teachers and SSOs Classroom visits Interviews with Parents and Governing Council Representatives (Tuesday) At the end of the Review the school will receive a written report with strengths and improvement directions. 2020 Planning Planning for next year continues and enrolment numbers make up an important part of this process. If you know of any families or students intending to enrol at our school for 2020, please encourage them to contact the school. School Values Our focus value for this term is Honesty and we will be encouraging students to be honest in their approach to their work and to accept responsibility for and to understand the consequences of their actions. We will also be encouraging students to continue to display the other school values of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best. SAPSASA Tennis Congratulations to Jazmin, Sophie, Adele, Kane and Chelsea for being selected to represent the Riverland Tennis team. Having 5 out 12 students from our school making the team is a great achievement. Foundation Cup Tennis Well done to Adele, Tom, Sophie and Jaicob for representing the ‘River Murray’ at the Foundation Cup at Berri. Congratulations to Sophie Nettle for winning the U13 State Singles Foundation Cup. She will now represent SA at the National Titles in Melbourne. Toms team were the overall winner's in the Super 10’s and both he and Jaicob won an individual award each. Regards, Principal, David Ness

SWIMMING POOL The pool will be open from 21st October and teachers will be able to take students swimming when the temperature is above 28°c. Students will need to bring their swimming needs (including goggles) every day as the weather warms up. Lucky we to also have the pool heater now.

As the department requires us to have an observer present, we are asking for volunteers who are available to help. A reply slip is going home today or please see staff in the front office if you are able to volunteer. Students and teachers appreciate your support as the weather heats up. More info to come regarding private use outside of school hours.

School News

Lately I have been talking about how we can help our children and young people to develop and strengthen social intelligence. Last time I gave 4 ideas to develop. Here are some more: * Avoid negating your child's perception about another person. Instead, reflect and help clarify. For instance, instead of saying “I don't think Kiesha meant to be mean to you, and of course you can't disinvite her to your party!" Try empathy...."It sounds like when Kiesha said that in front of the other kids, it really embarrassed and hurt you. You think she did it on purpose, and it makes you so mad

you don't even want her at your party. "With this kind of support she's likely to get past her hurt and anger and make a better decision about how to proceed. * Make it a habit to acknowledge and reflect feelings instead of dismissing them. Often, we parents have such a hard time seeing our child in pain that we get angry at the other child. We say things like “He’s not a good friend to you. Let it go and find a new friend. Good riddance!" But that doesn't help the child at all. Comments that tell our kids to just get over someone they've cared about, or a hurt they have suffered, simply dismiss our child's legitimate feelings and keep the child stuck in hurt and anger. When you instead keep your own upset in check and empathise with your child's feelings. "Having your friend say something like that to you could really hurt”, he gets to feel them fully. That might mean that he gets more upset momentarily, but once he gets the chance to feel the emotions, they begin to dissipate. Once he feels better, he can do better problem solving, whether that means talking with the friend, or ending the partnership. * Bossiness is often a problem with early primary schoolers. All children want to get their own way - but they still want other kids to play with them. Learning to negotiate is a critical skill at this age. Try asking questions to guide your child to solve the problem. “Is it more important to you to play the game your way or to have Cathy play with you?" When another child is bossy, your child may need suggestions from you about tactful ways to negotiate with her friends. Help her with scripts: "I really want to play with you, Jasmine, but we've been playing dress ups all morning and I don't feel like it anymore. What can we do that we both want to do? I hope these ideas help you in your journey in raising a well-adjusted and confident child. Until next time, Brenton

Congratulations to Sophie Nettle for

winning the U13 Tennis SA Foundation Cup Tennis Singles! This is a fantastic achievement and we are very proud of

you Sophie. Wishing you every success representing South Australia in January.

I was so excited because in the first week of the holidays I played in the Foundation Cup! The Foundation Cup is a Tennis Tournament held in Berri with 6 regions in SA participating. I played number 2 in the River Murray under 15’s team event. Our team came 2nd losing to Hills Fleurieu by 2 games. I was thrilled to win the Sportsmanship Award for under 15’s with 9/10 votes. In the individual tournament I went back down to under 13’s, I was really nervous. I won all of my games and in the Grand Final I played another girl from River Murray winning 6-2, 6-2. I made the State Regional Team and in January the top 2 girls and the top 2 boys will represent South Australia at the National Foundation Cup in Melbourne playing at Kooyong, when the Australian Open is on. I will be attending extra trainings in Adelaide in the lead up to the event. This is going to be a wonderful experience and I am really looking forward to it. ~Sophie Nettle

Charges (school fees) for 2020 will be presented at our

next Governing Council Meeting, Monday 28th October.

An invitation is extended to the school community to

attend this meeting where the charge will be submitted for

approval. If you have any questions, please contact the

school in writing, prior to this meeting.

Please note this is not an invoice to pay. School fees are

invoiced to families in January, 2020.

Have you ever been on an amazing camp? Well in week 10 of term 3, the year 6/7 class were stoked to go on their best camp ever. They had a long bus ride to Melrose and camped at Camp Willochra. They camped there for 3 nights and were devastated when it was time to leave. On camp the students experienced many extraordinary opportunities including, climbing Mount Remarkable, watching the Royal Flying Doctor planes take off, exploring Alligator Gorge and the Terraces, having tea at the Melrose Pub, looking at the beautiful scenery at Melrose lookout, walking through the Tunnel of Time, participating in the Red Faces Concert, going on night walks and just simply enjoying being around their friends and class mates. We would all ike to thank the campsite manager Gerral for letting us stay at the campsite, Mr Hanna for organising the amazing camp and Brenton and Mrs Coats for keeping us all under control. ~Mia
