or eighty people at our meetings. Not everyone isinterested in competitions or field trips or meetings. All of our members are interested in photography. So, what can we do to engage thosewho currently are not participating…what are wemissing?I am looking at several options to get input fromevery member interested in sharing their thoughtsand ideas. This is your club and I will listen to whatyou have to say and do my best to make it a clubthat helps you meet your personal photography interests and goals…regardless of your experiencelevel.

PRESIDENT’S STATEMENT: As I sit down to pen my first letter as CPCPresident, a thousand thoughts are racingthrough my mind. I know I can’t cover all Iwant to say to you in this first letter so I’ll share a fewthoughts I believe are very important.Let me start by thanking Tom McCabe for his leader-ship at the helm of this organization for more thantwo and one half years. Tom has been…and I believe will continue to be…a huge advocate for our club.Every-time he sees a person holding a camera he introduces himself and invites them to join us. UnderTom’s direction the club has grown to more thaneighty members. We are now classified as a “LargeClub” by the Photograph Society of America (PSA) ofwhich we are a member. Tom has inspired many clubmembers to grow and improve their photographyskills and shared his knowledge as they continuedon their journey. He has forged relationships withother Photo or Camera Clubs in Eastern North Carolina. I hope to continue those relationships andbuild more relationships with clubs all across ourState. Such relationships can help us with monthlyprograms, field trips, competition rules and prac-tices, and so much more.I was not here when our club…then called The NewBern Camera Club…was formed in 1991 “to bringpeople together who want to share their interestsand skills in photography.” I can imagine it was asmall group of people with similar interests gathering on a regular basis. It is relatively easy torun a club with a few members who all share thesame interests. It is a challenge to run a club withover eighty members who share a common interestin photography but have varied interests in how theywant to pursue their photography. I believe this is one of thebiggest challenges we face.My personal goal, and I hopeyou will join me, is to increaseparticipation in the life of ourclub. Now, that doesn’t meaneveryone submitting photos to our club competitions oreveryone going on a field trip

Congratulation s to the Winner s in the Spring Photo Competition!

CPC Spring Print Competition Summaryby Jeanne JulianThe CPC’s seasonal major competition was held at theNew Bern Craven County Public Library on Saturday,April 9. There were a total of 50 entries. Kathy Tucci andAlan Welch handled check-in. John Steady and Rick Meyerorganized the display of images. Judges were artist Joyce Stratton, an award-winning, mixed media artist (www.joycestratton.com), andCharlotte Fitz Daniels, Executive Director of the Greenville(NC) Museum of Art. Ms. Stratton’s work is represented inprominent galleries and many exhibits; she recently wontop honors for her two-dimensional piece at the CravenArts Council National Juried Art Show. Ms. Daniels, anexperienced potter, earned her MAT in art education andBFA in ceramic design from East Carolina University. Shehas curated a number of photography exhibits at theGreenville Museum. Both judges offered comments about the images theychose as exemplary. The most-mentioned attributes ofaward-winning photos were drawn from the 12 elements of a merit image, especially impact, story-telling, composi-tion, color balance and tones, composition, lighting, and creativity. Both judges emphasized the “feeling” that an imageevoked. “You can pick something apart, but what it comesdown to is a little thump in my chest when somethingmoves me,” said Ms. Stratton. First comes “a connectionwith the piece,” said Ms. Daniels, “and then you pull awayfrom your own values and look at the technical aspects.” In regard to technique, the judges gave high marks tophotos with interesting or appropriate depth of field. Theyalso appreciated focus: sharpness of detail, evidence of texture. originality of treatment was important to the judges, too. For instance, the “Best of Show” photograph by ClaireHageman demonstrated an ability to “heighten the ordi-nary,” as Ms. Daniels phrased it. While the subject matterwas “simple,” the judges agreed, it had striking color, waswell-composed, sharp, and evoked feelings in the viewer, asense of history, nostalgia, mystery. Claire won a $50.00 gift certificate to ASAP inGreenville. Her photo of an antique bottle was shot with amacro lens in natural light from a window at her sister’shouse. It was virtually SooC (“straight out of camera,” withlittle post-processing). The judges respected the talent of all of the memberswho entered the competition. When the first-place entrieswere collectively being evaluated to determine the “best inshow,” Ms. Daniels remarked, “This is getting’ hard, y’all!”

At the conclusion of the event, John Steady explainedthat the fall major competition will include prints and, forthe first time, projected images, with no printing andmounting costs, to encourage everyone to enter. In regardsto mounting and matting, Rick Meyer reminded members tomake sure that prints are secure on their backing (he suggested using Japanese hinge tape) and that folio-stylemats are held closed with removable double-sided tape. afterward, the judges joined a dozen members for a well-deserved lunch at Morgan’s restaurant downtown.

ADVISORY BOARD TO BE ESTABLISHED

To help me better understand peoples needs and

concerns, I am establishing an advisory board. The

board will be comprised of a cross section of our

membership.

I will be looking for members who are new to the

club, long time members who are not currently active,

and active members to be part of the board. The board

will not have any authority…it’s purpose is to share with

me what is important to them. Any suggestions or

recommendations that come out of this board will be

presented to the Executive Board for consideration. This

is the first of several steps I will take to give everyone

who has ideas for improving the club a chance to share

those ideas. - John Steady, President - 252-671-0288
