In India, the domestic coal supply and demand gap has increased by a CAGR of 30 percent over the last five years. This glaring gap has forced end-users to rethink their coal sourcing strategies to meet their requirement. Considering the limitation in availability of domestic coal supply from FSAs and E-auction, the only favorable option left with coal consumers is import. The prices in the global coal market are volatile and presently are under downward pressure due to oversupply conditions (as shown in figure). As per IEA, India is expected to become largest importer of coal by early 2020.
