January 24, 2016 To whom it may concern: My name is Russell Nickels and I would like to state my recommendation for Drew Carter as a football coach. I am a former quarterback at BrookingsHarbor High School and I was fortunate to have Coach Carter as head coach my senior year. There is a lot of great things to say about him, and it’s hard to figure out where to start. Coach Carter came to BrookingsHarbor at a time when he was needed most. He was, unfortunately, my fourth head coach in as many seasons. However, the impact that Coach Carter has made on BrookingsHarbor football has been a great one. Coach Carter brought our program to place that I have never seen in my years playing football. He has an incredibly intelligent football mind and loves the game. One thing that is great about him is that he knows how to use the players that he has to their full potential. I was a quarterback that was less mobile than most, so he never made me do things that were beyond my capacity but instead helped me maximize the things that I was good at, being a traditional pocketpasser myself. Coach Carter is always emphasizing the importance of perfecting the little things, and made us a much more disciplined team than we were in the past. He also is a firm believer in sportsmanship and class. Our colors are blue and gold, so he would talk about having a “blue collar” work ethic and a “gold standard” when it comes to sportsmanship. He would always tell us to help a player get up after making a good tackle. We also practiced good form and safety in all aspects of the game. The community is something that was also very important to Coach Carter. In the spring and summer, the program held youth football camps for grades 48, teaching them the same basic principles that Coach Carter teaches his players. Most importantly, he was able to get our community excited about BrookingsHarbor football again. Attendance to games was greatly improved upon. He also was able to get us allnew Nike uniforms along with new practice jerseys, travel bags, etc. at a time where the team had virtually no money. This was all made possible through his hard work to fundraise for us, which leads to another point: how much he cares for his players. Looking back on it, it is truly amazing to see how much he did for us. Personally, he gave me not only valuable coaching and taught me how to play the quarterback position like no other coach had, but he also gave me a great friendship. He is someone that I will always remember as an important figure in my life. Please consider him highly for this position, as he would make an excellent choice to help better your program. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, I would be more than happy to answer them. Sincerely, Russell Nickels, Former BHHS Quarterback Contact EMail: [email protected]
