WHAT IS ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE?Article courtesy of Animal Health Ireland

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the acquired ability of bacteria (microbes) to survive exposure to an antibiotic to which it was previously sensitive and that was effective in treating infections caused by it.

What causes AMR?The use and misuse of antibiotics selects for resistant strains of bacteria and accelerates the emergence of AMR. The risk of resistance increases if antibiotics are:

• Used at less than the recommended dose• Not administered for the recommended duration• Overused• Used inappropriately.

Why is AMR a concern for farmers?Antimicrobial resistance potentially impacts on animal health, human health and the reputation of the Irish food industry. Resistance in bacterial species can cause difficulties in the treatment of infections in humans and animals. Many antibiotics used in veterinary medicine are also used in human medicine. Resistant bacteria may be spread from animals to humans (and vice versa) via direct contact, environmental contamination and potentially through foodborne bacteria.

Responsible use of antibiotics on farms• Discuss all antibiotic usage with your own veterinary

practitioner and obtain a prescription for any antibiotics required

• Use, store and dispose of antibiotics according to the directions given

• Avoid using blanket antibiotic treatments across a group of animals

• Investigate the cause of disease with your veterinary practitioner and only use antibiotics where appropriate.

• Antibiotics are only effective against diseases caused by bacteria

• Use culture and sensitivity testing in order to select the most appropriate antibiotic

• Keep records of medicines used• Explore with your veterinary practitioner strategies to

prevent and control disease and therefore minimise the need for antibiotics. Examples of such strategies include a biosecurity plan to keep new diseases out of your farm, boosting the immunity of animals on your farm through good colostrum management and vaccination programmes (where appropriate), reducing the sources of infection through good hygiene practices and preventing the spread of infection by avoiding overcrowded housing, and careful management of sick animals.

Further information on managing disease risks on farms can be found on the Animal Health Ireland website.

FORAGE MAIZE GROWING 2017In 2017, maize will offer good quality feed at a low price compared to offer forage options as seen in the table below. However, this is only possible if good yields and quality are achieved.

Forage Crop costs*

Cost per tonne DM utilised: Grazed grass €50, 1st cut silage €130, 2nd cut silage €150 and WCW €130*Based on Teagasc Crop Costs and Returns 2017 Booklet

Site Choice of site is critical to giving an economic return to growing maize (growing maize on marginal sites is high risk). Choose a sheltered south facing field (warmest on farm) with light to medium soil type and good drainage as maize will not tolerate compaction. Site altitudes should not exceed 100m.

SowingCan proceed when soil temperatures are above 8ºC. Sowing under plastic can proceed from late March, uncovered delay sowing until after mid-April.

Plough as early as possible and allow to weather naturally. Prepare a fine, firm seedbed 10-12 cm (4-5 inches) deep. Avoid rolling after sowing except where very dry soil conditions prevail. Drill 100,000-110,000 seeds/ha (40,000 to 45,000 seeds/ace) depending on conditions and yield potential (sow at higher end for earlier sowing and better sites).

Plastic Plastic cover helps to deliver consistent yield and quality. Barryroe recommends Samco pinhole plastic cover (roll covers 0.6 hectares/1.5 acres) as it is tried and trusted to perform.

Crop NutritionSoil testing to determine requirements is strongly recommended. Ensuring adequate nutrients, especially Phosphorus (P), are supplied is essential. Slurry is very useful in supplying significant proportions of the P & K requirements.

Maize nutrient requirement Kg/ha (units/acre)N & P rates as per Nitrates Directive *Must be incorporated

To avoid creating a cold seedbed, it is not recommended to plough down large quantities of slurry until it has dried out.

Varieties Use varieties from the Irish recommended list as they are proven independently under Irish conditions. Match your choice of variety to your site (choosing a slightly earlier maturing variety may mean marginally less yield but will deliver a more reliable maturity, quality and suitable harvest date).

Barryroe Maize Variety Recommendations 2017

Weed ControlControlling weeds early is very important for successful maize crops. Barryroe recommend Stomp Aqua + Wing P under plastic. In all cases a follow-up overspray of an appropriate post-emergence product e.g. Maizekleen may be necessary if weeds come through.

DiseaseMaize can be affected by a range of diseases, the most common in Ireland is Eyespot. Where risk factors are high, spray with at the latest possible timing (probably when the crop is two feet tall circa late June).

Risk factors• Lack of rotation (ploughing early will reduce the issue)• Maize is a popular crop in the area• The site is close to the sea• There is a history of the disease in the area• An eyespot susceptible variety is being sown

To find out more; talk to your local Barryroe Co-op representative.

FEEDING FOR FERTILITYGood fertility performance is worth chasing as it drives profit on your farm. For a spring calving herd, every 1% increase in 6 week calving rate is worth €8.20 per cow.

Moving from the Barryroe Co-op average of calving 56% of your herd in 6 weeks to 90% will increase profits in a 100 cow herd by €27,880 or will increase net margin by c. 5c per litre!

Good fertility performance is dependent on the genetics breeding management, herd health and nutrition.

Energy NutritionEnergy intake is the most important factor in nutrition. Underfeeding (inadequate energy intake) leads to:

• Low milk protein, • Excessive body condition loss and poor fertility performance.

Negative energy balance (more energy used than taken in) and some body condition score (BCS) loss after calving is inevitable, as a cows’ maximum energy output, in milk occurs before her maximum dry matter intake (DMI) is reached. However, excessive BCS (>0.5 BCS) has been proven to reduce fertility (see Teagasc trial below).

Relationship between BCS loss post calving and 6 week incalf rate (for cows with a pre-calving BCS of >3) Teagasc Trial

Your job is the limit the amount of body condition score (BCS) loss by maximising energy intake. This is achieved by prioritising the feeding of high energy feeds (remove silage from the diet as soon as possible and replace with grass and concentrates) and by ensuring the cows maximum DMI is achieved.

Energy Intake = Quantity Eaten X Energy Density of the Feed

Warning Signs Watch out for the following:

• Low intake of high energy feeds can = low energy intake• Over estimating of grass intake = low energy intake• Low energy intake = INFERTILITY

Early Warning Sign of Underfeeding1. Low Milk Proteins: In early lactation, herd milk protein below 3.1 are of concern.2. High butterfat to protein ratio. This is an indication of ketosis. In early lactation, herd butterfat:protein ratio of above 1.4:1 are of

concern e.g. Butterfat % of 4.5, protein % of 3.15 is a ratio of 1.43:1. The high butterfat % is coming from the body fat the cow is losing.

Reason for low milk protein or ketosis:• Diet is too low in energy• Low Energy is caused by:

1. Feeding low energy (UFL) feeds i.e. poor quality silage or poorly managed grass (with insufficient concentrates to balance)2. Low intake of high energy feeds i.e. overestimating grass allowance.

Feeding rates for an all grass diet

Meets 100% of the cows’ energy requirements assuming good quality grass available ad-lib

Action:• Correct concentrate feeding for grass silage quality.• Better grassland management.• Increased concentrate feeding at grass if cows intakes are not being met.• Buffer feeding with good quality forage if required.

Grow more grass to fill the gapIt has been a difficult spring to meet grazing targets and to keep grass growing. The original target was to have 60-65% of the farm grazed by 17th March and 100% by the first week in April. This is unlikely to happen on most farms this year-targets may need to be pushed back but try not to extend them by more than a week-this will have a big impact on subsequent grass quality.

Fertiliser/SlurryIt is important to keep grass growing on the farm. Grass will need to recover after grazing and be ready to graze again in the first half of April. Nitrogen fertiliser needs to be spread. The target is have 60 -70 units of Nitrogen applied to every acre (grazed and ungrazed) before April 1st for most dairy farms. This nitrogen target can be achieved through a combination of slurry (6 units N/1000 gals) and fertiliser.

Remember Phosphorus (P) in particular is very important for growth of grass in spring. While slurry has P and K in it, it may not be appropriate for applying to grazing ground in latter half of March, so consider compounds as per soil test results.
