Dear Colleagues,

Australia is currently going through a higher education boom and with the high number of enrolments; the dropout rates at Australian universities have hit their highest level in eight years. The national average attrition rate for first year students reached 14.84 precent in 2013, highest since 2005.

Student Retention & Success strategies are crucial when addressing the concerns in the higher education industry and for creating a whole of institute framework to support student engagement, retention and success.

With that in mind, Student Retention & Success 2016 aims to address these challenges and gain insights through interactive sessions, case studies and panel discussions. A few highlighted sessions being:

} Case Study: Stepping Up Student Success: Monash College’s Initiative for Improving Student Success and Retention

} Case Study: Embedding Retention Strategies at Swinburne University for Improving Overall Student Advancement, Experience and Employability

} Proactive Engagement Strategies based on the Outcomes of Learning & Retention Analytics

Make the most of this opportunity to hear from your peers and industry experts on how to improve student retention and success at your institute.

16:30 Individualising Student Success at Monash University for Empowering Students

Monash University doesn’t have a one-size fits all definition of student success. That’s because we recognise all students are different. Instead we want to encourage our students to develop their own distinct definition and to remember that this will evolve over the course. In this interactive session, Professor Darrell Evans and Associate Professor Robert Nelson will facilitate discussions around what student success can mean for different students and how best to enable them to develop, recognize, and articulate their own success. The session will focus on

• Enabling students to set themselves up for success at university through effective orientation and an emphasis on learning how to learn

• Encouraging students to explore the idea of individual success and empowering all students to reach their potential

17:10 Identity Theory as a Theoretical Framework to Understand Attrition for Transitioning University Students

There has been extensive research done with a view to explaining the challenges involved in the transition into tertiary study and the factors associated with student attrition. This paper consolidates the author's research in relation to the transition of students into tertiary bridging programs and undergraduate university study and presents an alternative approach to the use of objective conditions, such as financial challenges and first-in-family status, in explaining the attrition phenomenon.

• Identity theory is used as the basis to develop a theoretical framework that will assist educators working in these areas to engage more fully with and assist students to develop the academic and scholarly identity necessary to sustain appropriate and effective academic behaviours during educational transitions.

Dr Robert Whannell Lecturer School of Education, University of New England

17:50 Ethical and Legal Implications Around Big Data & Learning Analytics- Ultimate Ownership of Data

Learning analytics is one of the hottest trends in higher education, and rightly so. Learning analytics uses data about students and their activities to help institutions understand and improve educational processes, and provide better support and ultimately reduce attrition rates. There is also a concern that any data set, no matter how comprehensive, cannot take in to account other issues, such as interpersonal ones. This panel discussion will facilitate an in depth conversation on ethical and legal implications around learning analytics.

• Who in the institution decides what data is collected and used for analytics?

• What data does the institution own and what is owned by the student?

• To what extent should students be given details of the algorithms used for learning analytics and the metrics and labels that are created?

• Does a student have the right to opt out of data collection and analysis of their learning activities?

09:50 Aspects Challenging Retention in a Large Foundation First Year Health Sciences Program

In this session, Dr Suzane Vassallo will provide a case study outlining some challenges faced by students undertaking a large (>2000 enrolment) foundation core curriculum in First Year Health Sciences. The Core curriculum was implemented in 2009, and the current teaching format is blended and multicampus in its delivery and multidisciplinary in its design. In the past few years, La Trobe University has implemented many strategies aimed at improving student retention and success. In addition, at a more local level, specific initiatives have been put in place for Health students to support academic success. In relation to a large core first year program undertaken by many disciplines, this session will highlight:

• The operationalisation of University requirements related to student retention

• Factors affecting student retention • Added academic initiatives aimed at increasing

student support and retention

& Engineering, La Trobe University

11:00 Morning Tea

11:30 Beyond the Individual; What the Data says about Student Retention and Expectations for Certain University Programs

In this session, Professor Richard John will discuss the counter-intuitive findings of the inverse relationship between teaching quality/student experience and student retention rates; he will also explore the strong link between student retention and the ultimate graduate destination. A comprehensive analysis of student retention data across 39 Australian Universities and data from the Australian Graduate Survey, the Graduate Destination Survey, the national Student Experience Survey and internal Griffith University student experience data show that retention depends to a large extent on:

• Where a student studies (both in terms of the specific institution and its location);

• How easy it is to change their place of study; • What program of study (Field of Education) is

undertaken; and • Future job prospects

Richard John Dean for Teaching & Learning, Griffith University

12:10 Western Sydney University’s Intervention Program Using At-Risk Student Indicators

The School of Business at Western Sydney University has a high volume of first year students from a diverse array of backgrounds and pathways. With high enrolments, there is the potential that a proportion of these students could become at risk of poor performance in their first year subjects, which in turn can impact a student’s progression and retention. In this session, Dr Francine elaborates on the systematic approach she has developed with the assistance of the Transition Success Team.

• Developing intervention strategies with clear risk identifiers

• Better understanding student behaviour • Importance of attendance as a predictor for at risk

profiling

Dr Francine Garlin Director of Undergraduate Programs, STaRS Coordinator

(Business), Western Sydney University 12.50 Making Sense of Learning Analytics to Establish a

Holistic Eco-system for Student Development and Support

Learning analytics is not only about the larger picture, but also about taking smaller bits of information in order to create a more accurate and aggregated picture. The University of Southern Queensland has developed an analytics framework to aid decision-making based on Weick’s (1984) notion of ‘small wins’. In this session, Fernando discusses the strategies involved in establishing the analytic eco-system that can assist decision-makers to assess the impacts or contributions of student engagement opportunities on student success as defined by TEQSA risk assessment framework.

learning analytics development

A/Prof Deborah West Director- Office of Learning and Teaching, Charles Darwin University

15:30 Student Engagement Initiative Increasing Cross-disciplinary Interaction for Enhanced Student Experience

Both student retention and success are inseparable from Student Engagement and present a range of challenges for the policy makers to education providers. A single program and/or policy is insufficient to ensure that the learners are engaged with their education, continue their studies and be successful. A holistic approach is a must to support and engage student cohorts to address the Student Retention and Success issues. This session is based on a study about Student Engagement initiative by Abhishek Awasthi at La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus and how the cross-disciplinary interaction and a supportive learning environment for all participants enhanced student experience both inside and outside the classroom.

• Explore the complexity of the topic of Student Engagement, Retention and Success, from students’ points of view, and look into the variation in the experiences of individuals.

• Early efforts to understand the complexity of this issue in a regional context as well as what educational institutions need to provide to engage their learners.

• How learner participation, collaboration, commitment, motivation and use of contemporary forms of communication tools and technologies are critical for enriching educational experiences in the diverse learning environments of the twenty-first century.

Abhishek Awasthi Student Engagement Officer, La Trobe University

16:10 RMIT College of Business - Student Success and Retention Programs Targeting Students at Different Times through Student Mentoring for Increased Pass Rates & Retention

In this case study, Lila Kemlo will highlight some of the initiatives RMIT’s College of Business has implemented to increase pass rates within the College and increase retention:

• The Student Learning Adviser Mentors (SLAMs) program, developed more than a decade ago is a sustainable, cost effective and highly successful student academic mentoring program and has become an integral part of the College learning support. The program aims to give students a sense of belonging and a sense of mastery in a safe nurturing environment.

• The Student Success and Retention program uses selected members from the SLAMs team to contact various student cohorts at risk of academic failure at targeted times during the semester, to identify issues, discuss what needs to change in terms of learning behaviour, how to engage with learning material and online learning platforms within the first three weeks of the semester, managing time and developing strategies for self-managed learning, and referring students to both College and University support services
