Spring is around the corner and just as the season brings new growth to our environment our Community Education program
offers new opportunities for every learner. From pre-kindergarten to high school we are creating college and career-ready
graduates, and challenging all to discover their talents through a wealth of early childhood to adult enrichment programs.
If you have preschool children, one of the best choices you can make is to enroll them in our Four-Star Parent Aware
pre-kindergarten and Mini-Adventures programs. We have caring, licensed educators who will help prepare your child not only
in the core subjects, but also in building relationships. We believe we have the best programs in our greater community, so why
not take advantage of the best?
Do you already have a child enrolled in school, but want more opportunities? Consider our ENCORE and Adventure Club
after-school programs. Through ENCORE your child will be further exposed to math, reading, visual arts, math, science and
more. Adventure Club is a fantastic extended day (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) child care program for kindergarteners through fifth grade.
Two great programs for great children!
We also offer all types of creative and wonderful learning opportunities for those beyond school. Consider our Adult Basic
Education program to prepare you for college or career-ready options. Keep healthy by taking aquatics classes or work out in
the exercise room at the Hylander Center, conveniently co-located with Columbia Heights High School. And, we have all kinds
of creative classes, workshops, seminars and presentations that will enrich your life.
Columbia Heights Public Schools’ Community Education helps you or yours discover those hidden talents and unleash the
potential that leads to lifelong success. Create a new opportunity this spring through any of our classes or programs…you will
be glad you did!

the great celestial show in the fall skies over
Fridley and Columbia Heights. This night
with the stars, constellations, planets, star
clusters, galaxies, and nebulae starts off with
an indoor orientation followed by quality
time outside under the heavens. Get to
know the constellations like The Big Bear,
Cassiopeia, Pegasus, and some of their great
stories behind them. We will also use large
reflecting telescopes, including two giant 20
inch reflectors that are among the biggest
mobile telescopes in Minnesota for close up
views of star clusters, nebulae, galaxies and
other wonders in our spring skies. We’ll also
use a new astronomical camera-telescope
system for extra special views of our more
distant universe. You’ll get a great handout
package with user-friendly star maps and
constellation charts, websites, a telescope-
buying guide, and more! Due to subject
matter and sensitive equipment used during

Twin Cities Architecture TourTwin Cities Tours is working with Columbia
Heights Community Education to produce
an architecture tour ranging from a five mile
parade of Victorian-era mansions along Saint
Paul's Summit Avenue to modern museums,
skyscrapers, WPA buildings, churches and
public sculpture. Many great architects, styles
and eras are represented here including
works of internationally-acclaimed
architects Phillip Johnson, Frank Lloyd
Wright, William Gray Purcell, Emmanuel
Masqueray, Cesar Pelli, Frank Gehry, Jean
Nuveau, Jacques Herzon, Pierre de Meuron
and more. Plus local architects like Cass
Gilbert (the State Capitol, the Woolworth
building in NYC), Clarence Johnston

Harry "Wild" Jones, a featured architect on
the Hidden Treasures tour.
Regarding residential architecture, a
common reaction is amazement at the many,
unduplicated, yet aesthetically beautiful
variations of styles and unparalleled Camelot
neighborhoods. One guest's reaction typified
many others: "If when I die heaven does not
look like this, I will be sadly disappointed!"

Instant Piano For Hopelessly Busy PeopleSome music teachers may not want you to
know this, but you don’t need years of week-
ly lessons to learn the piano. In just a few
hours, you can learn enough tricks of the
trade to give you years of musical
enjoyment. How do we do it? While
regular piano teachers teach note reading,
piano professionals use chords. And you can
learn all the chords you’ll need to play any
song in this one session. Any song; Any style;
Any key. If you can find middle C and know
the meaning of Every Good Boy Does Fine,
you already know enough to enroll in this
workshop.
Topics include:
•How chords work in a song
•How to get more out of sheet music by
reading less of it
•How to form the three main types of
chords
•How to handle different keys and time sig-
natures
•How to avoid “counting”
•How to simplify over 12,000 complex
chords

Early Childhood Screening
Has your child participated in Early Childhood Screening? In Minnesota, all children are required to have a health and developmental screening
before entering kindergarten in a public school. Screening should be completed before a child turns four years old, and is recommended
between the ages of three and four. Your child’s development, health, vision* and hearing will be assessed and the results will be reviewed with
the parents or guardians. Suggestions or referrals for follow-up will be made when appropriate. Early Childhood Screening is FREE!!
To schedule your child’s screening appointment please call 763-528-4517. Screenings will be held at the Family Center, 1460 49th Avenue NE,
Columbia Heights, MN 55421.
*Early childhood developmental screening helps a school district identify children who may benefit from district and communityresources available to help in their development. Early childhood developmental screening includes a vision screening that helps detectpotential eye problems but is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam.

What is Pre-K? Pre-K is a preschool program that prepares children for kindergarten through
participation in a wide variety of play experiences and group activities. This class provides a foundation for the
intellectual, social and emotional development needed for school success. Parents play an important role in their
child’s preschool experience and are required to participate in parent involvement activities.
Pre-K is a 33-week program, although students may join mid-year as space allows.
Who Attends Pre-K Classes? Pre-K is a program for all children 3-5 years old. Children with special
needs are integrated into Pre-K with the support of the Early Childhood Special Education staff.
What Can I Expect From Pre-K? Each day the Licensed Early Childhood Educator guides the students through large group
activities (music, stories, movement), snack time, small group activities (where they work closely with children on skills) and choice time at
learning centers. The classroom is arranged with learning centers so children can actively explore science, art, blocks, books, writing materials,
dramatic play, manipulatives (puzzles, games, building toys) and more.
What is the Parent’s Role in the Pre-K Program? Parents can choose from a variety of involvement activities. Attending
Super Second Saturday, The Family Center Presents!, using the Family Center Lending Libraries, and volunteering in the Pre-K classroom are
some of these options. Parents are provided with information about their child’s development and ways to support children’s learning at home.
Where are classes held? Pre-K is held at the Family Center (1460 49th Ave NE, Columbia Heights, MN 55421), North Park
Elementary (5575 Fillmore St NE, Fridley, MN 55432) and Highland Elementary (1500 49th Ave NE, Columbia Heights, MN 55421). Your child’s
classroom is based on your home address and elementary school boundaries.
Transportation: LIMITED bussing is provided for families enrolled in the 4-5-year-old classes who live within the Columbia Heights
School District. Transportation is based on program location; call 763-528-4517 for details and an application. Transportation is NOT available
for families in the 3-year-old programs.
Program Fee: The fee for the 3-Year-Old Drop-Off classes is $90 per month. The fee for the Pre-K 4-5-Year-Old classes is $110 per
month. Fee Assistance applications are available to qualifying families.
Registration Fee: A $25 deposit towards your child’s tuition is required at registration in order to reserve your child’s place in the
program.
