High SchoolCo-CurricularsWhy Now?With big decisions ahead, high school students benefit from co-curriculars no matter which path they choose – pursuing a post-secondary education or entering the workforce. Colleges want to see that prospective enrollees can effectively multitask coursework and outside activities. Employers are looking for candidates with life and leadership skills – two things co-curriculars definitely provide.

What’s the Value?Studies show that participation in co-curriculars has a strong link to academic results. Other findings show:

Co-Curriculars

Co-Curriculars Always in SeasonAppleton Area School District encourages our students to participate in co-curriculars at every grade level. Not only are these activities a great way to connect with classmates and get involved in the community, but they also help develop lifelong skills such as teamwork and time management, which are essential for future success.

A Real Plus for StudentsIt used to be that co-curriculars were a nice extra. While participation is still optional, co-curriculars are becoming more important than ever. That’s because admissions criteria for post-secondary schools keeps evolving – it’s not just GPA and ACT/SAT test scores that matter anymore. It’s also about learning beyond the classroom. Colleges are placing emphasis on how involved students are outside class and in the community. Employers are also considering the value co-curriculars have in providing real-world experience and the leadership potential they give graduates who are entering the workforce.

A World of OpportunityCo-curriculars are more than just after-school sports. The range of activities offered is pretty phenomenal and allows students at every level to pursue just about anything they are interested in or passionate about – from languages to music to technology.

Co-Curriculars Can… develop cognitive and academic skills!

Co-Curriculars Can… play a critical role in getting accepted to your college of choice!

Co-Curriculars Can… help you make a difference in your community!

• Being passionately involved in a few select activities, community service, and out-of-school experiences are among the top 10 things colleges are looking for when considering incoming freshmen.

• A Nellie May Education Foundation study shows that school dropout rates are much lower for students who participate in co-curriculars.

• As Education-Portal.com reports, balancing co-curriculars with coursework shows colleges and employers that students can successfully multitask.
