Why Bank Panics MatterCross-Disciplinary Economic Theory

Bank panics have always mattered because they create serious disruptions in economic and financial activity, depressing national economies.  But they matter even more now, as information and communications technologies have stitched together a global financial system that is more vul-nerable to crisis on a large scale. For example, the global bank panic of 2007-08 froze up the national economies of the U.S., England, France, Iceland, Ireland, and Germany -- all at the same time.  And each of their governments had to act to bail out their own banks, without a consistent interna-tional regulatory framework. In this volume, Fred Betz takes a unique, cross-disciplinary approach to understanding bank panics, with an emphasis on the U.S.

Features 7 Applies interdisciplinary analysis of bank panics to uncover common trends, causes, and ef-fects 7 Emphasizes the dynamics of bank panics and financial crises in social context 7 Features cases studies, both historical and contemporary

Product Variety in Automotive IndustryUnderstanding Niche Markets in America

This book is about the history of product variety in the US automotive industry from the black Ford-T to hot-rodders and easy-riders up to lat-est trends. It focuses on the dual structure of automotive industry in the United States: on one hand, relatively few and large companies produc-ing cars that apparently achieve a degree of market power through product differentiation, and on the other hand, a relatively small niche market with distinct and smaller producers offering specialty equipment to enhance the performance, appear-ance, and handling of vehicles. The book presents novel results from an in-depth study with implica-tions for both economic theory and the manage-ment of product variety.

Features 7 A historical and analytical time travel in the US automotive industry 7 Rich data and anecdotal evidence to understand history and nature of product variety 7 One of the few in-depth stud-ies on niche markets

Management and Valuation of Heritage AssetsA Comparative Analysis Between Italy and US

The valuation of Heritage Assets (HA), which are a vital resource for the non-profit public or private organizations operating in the heritage sector is on the one hand sometimes difficult to do, and on the other, can be excessively costly with respect to the correlated disclosure benefits. The grow-ing application of the (full or modified) accrual basis of accounting in the public and non-profit sectors has extended and reanimated this issue. This book applies the comparative method, in order to provide new information on the analyzed subject. Specifically, after having investigated the different theoretical and technical proposals, it compares the reporting behavior of significant cases of Italian and American public and private organizations, coming from different cultural and management approaches.

Features 7 Provides an analysis of recent and underdevel-oped issues 7 Compares two significant cases in detail 7 Provides guidance on the valuation of a vital resource in the public sector

Public Procurement, Innovation and PolicyInternational Perspectives

This book maps the latest developments in public procurement of innovation policy in various contexts and analyzes the evolution and develop-ment of the various policy solutions in broader institutional contexts. In doing so, it addresses significant theoretical and practical gaps: On the one hand, there is an emerging interest in public procurement as a policy tool for spurring innova-tion; yet on the other hand, the current theory, with some notable exceptions, is guided and often constrained by historical applications, above all in the defence industries.

Features 7 The first comparative overview on inno-vation-oriented public procurement policy-making 7 Covers a wide range of international contexts and perspectives 7 The book is re-search-oriented, but has direct practical relevance

National Intellectual Capital and the Financial Crisis in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and VenezuelaIn the first decade of the twenty-first century, the biggest event of worldwide proportion was the 2008 global financial crisis, which was caused primarily by ineffective governance, failed surveil-lance systems, and implementation flaws. While fiscal and monetary policies succeeded in pulling many countries out of a financial freefall, most economies have performed beneath pre-recession levels as governments continued to struggle with their finances. Examining the financial crisis from the viewpoint of intangible assets provides a different perspective from traditional economic approaches. National Intellectual Capital (NIC), comprised mainly of human capital, market capital, process capital, renewal capital, and financial capital, is a valuable intangible asset and a key source of national competitive advantage in today’s knowledge economy.

Technological Change and Skill Development in Arab Gulf CountriesThis book discusses skill formation, upskilling of workers, and their interaction with technological change in Gulf countries. Heavy dependence on oil, the ‘Dutch Disease’, and the high incidence of unskilled foreign workers have caused serious structural imbalances in the labour market in the Gulf. The author shows that success of economic development strategies to address such imbal-ances are all contingent upon the development of adequate and appropriate skills in the region. This book confirms the role and impact of the deficiencies in the educational system alongside the well established effects of the excessive use of uneducated foreign workers and lack of incentives in the labour market. A comprehensive investiga-tion of the skill problem and an elaborate in-depth analysis to assess the causes, consequences and relationships between poor skills and technologi-cal performance are highlights of this book. This is an ideal resource for policy makers in the Gulf region and researchers of the topic.

Legal Regulation of Corporate Social ResponsibilityA Meta-Regulation Approach of Law for Raising CSR in a Weak Economy

New SeriesAdvances in Japanese Business and EconomicsEditor-in-chief: R. Sato

Advances in Japanese Business and Economics showcases the research of Japanese scholars. Pub-lished in English, the series highlights for a global readership the unique perspectives of Japan’s most distinguished and emerging scholars of business and economics. It covers research of either theo-retical or empirical nature, in both authored and edited volumes, regardless of the sub-discipline or geographical coverage, including, but not limited to, such topics as macroeconomics, microeco-nomics, industrial relations, innovation, regional development, entrepreneurship, international trade, globalization, financial markets, technology management, and business strategy. At the same time, as a series of volumes written by Japanese scholars, it includes research on the issues of the Japanese economy, industry, management practice and policy, such as the economic policies and business innovations before and after the Japanese “bubble” burst in the 1990s. Overseen by a panel of renowned scholars led by Editor-in-Chief Professor Ryuzo Sato, the series endeavors to over-come a historical deficit in the dissemination of Japanese economic theory, research methodology, and analysis. The volumes in the series contribute not only to a deeper understanding of Japanese business and economics but to revealing underly-ing universal principles.

Symmetry and Economic InvarianceSymmetry and Economic Invariance (second enhanced edition) explores how the symmetry and invariance of economic models can pro-vide insights into their properties. Although the professional economist of today is adept at many of the mathematical techniques used in static and dynamic optimization models, group theory is still not among his or her repertoire of tools. The authors aim to show that group theoretic methods form a natural extension of the techniques com-monly used in economics and that they can be easily mastered. Part I provides an introduction that minimizes prerequisites including prior knowledge of group theory. Part II discusses recent developments in the field.

Innovation Processes in Business NetworksManaging Inter-Organizational Relationships for Innovational Excellence

In today’s networked economy, each organization is more and more shaped by the system of its long-term business interactions. Innovation processes cannot be successfully designed and managed un-less the complex influences of business networking on innovation processes and innovation-related performances are clearly understood. But extant theories on business networks are fragmented, and each of them, taken singularly, provides only partial or poor understanding of the impacts of business networking on innovation performances. Based on qualitative research on three exemplary worst practices and on expert panel discussion and validation, Francesca Ricciardi develops novel quantitative models in this theory-building work to explain innovation performances in different interorganizational networks.

Communities of Practice and Vintage InnovationA Strategic Reaction to Technological Change

This book focuses on the notion of “vintage innovation” and its application in various old technology-based communities of practice. Some communities of practice resist and react to technological change by adopting new technologi-cal products (“vintage products”) that extend the lifetime of their old, favored products and prac-tices. There are a number of potential reasons for such strategic reactions, which are analyzed by the author. The book opens by reviewing the nature of technological change. Old technology-based com-munities of practice and their typical reactions to technological change are then discussed, and the concept of vintage innovation, introduced and explained. The book presents four case studies of communities of users in which vintage innovation emerged: analog photographers, radio amateurs, arcade videogame players, and disc jockeys.

Project Management with Dynamic SchedulingBaseline Scheduling, Risk Analysis and Project Control

The topic of this book is known as dynamic scheduling, and is used to refer to three dimen-sions of project management and scheduling: the construction of a baseline schedule and the analy-sis of a project schedule’s risk as preparation of the project control phase during project progress. This dynamic scheduling point of view implicitly assumes that the usability of a project’s baseline schedule is rather limited and only acts as a point of reference in the project life cycle. Consequently, a project schedule should especially be considered as nothing more than a predictive model that can be used for resource efficiency calculations, time and cost risk analyses, project tracking and perfor-mance measurement, and so on.

Features 7 Overview of project scheduling principles available in literature 7 Integration of schedul-ing, risk and control 7 Use of software stimu-lated (students version available) 7 Topics based on many research projects and real-life projects

Contents Preface.- I Scheduling without resources.- II Scheduling with resources.- III Project control.- IV Scheduling with software.- V Conclusions.- In-dex.
