CLW IN BRIEF
Chittaranjan Locomotive Works is the first locomotive building workshop in free India. It is a premier production unit of Indian Railways and one of the first major industries established in Independent India. Chittaranjan was selected as a site for locomotive building unit by the Ministry of Railways in the year 1947. The production was inaugurated on the auspicious day of 26th January 1950, the day India became Republic, by Smt. Basanti Devi, w/o the Great Patriot, DeshbandhuChittaranjan Das. The township as well as the factory have also been named after him. Chittaranjan is an undulated terrain of 18.4 sq km. It is a well planned township comprising of 08 distinct areas. Each of the area is having a lot of vegetation, contains residential accommodations, Health Unit, Schools, Institutes, Community centres, Parks, Play grounds and other recreational facilities. A 200 bedded Hospital named after Smt. Kasturba Gandhi, w/o Rastrapita Mahatma Gandhi, serves the entire Chittaranjan. Production in CLW was started with the manufacture of WG class Steam Locomotive and the first locomotive “Deshabandhu” was rolled out in the year 1950. CLW has manufactured 2351 Nos. Steam Locomotive of 05 different types and the production discontinued with “ANTIM SITARA” in 1973-74. Production of Diesel Shunting Locomotive (WDS4) started in the year 1967-68 with first loco named “ INDRAPRASTHA’’ on January 06, 1968. Diesel shunting locomotive of 07 different types were also produced by CLW and the production discontinued in 1993-94 after manufacturing 842 diesel locomotives. Manufacture of Electric Locomotive was started with the production of D.C. locomotive and the first loco. “BIDHAN” was produced on 14th November, 1961. To enhance capability and reliability in both passenger & freight traffic, manufacture of 25KV AC Electric locomotive was undertaken and the first loco was rolled out on 16th November, 1963. Due to persistence of continuous demand for high mobility and large phase AC locomotive with state of the art technology has been undertaken and
the WAP5, WAP7, WAG9& WAG9H type 3 phase AC locomotives are under
production at CLW. CLW is one of the world’s six 3 phase locomotive manufacturing units. Modernization and augmentation of production capacity from 200 to 275 locos per year. The demand of electric locomotives is going up continuously to cope with the increase in freight traffic and passenger traffic and to take care of requirements of new electrified routes. With increased electric locomotives requirement, CLW shall produce at the rate of 275 locomotives per year.

BASIC TRAINING SHOP
It is generally used to impart Basic Practical
Training to the TECH Gr. III, Trade Conversion
Trainees, BOPT& Act Apprentices. Beside well
equipped Fitting, Machine and Welding sections, a
MIG welding set is newly introduced for up
gradation of technical skill of Welder trainees.
Manufacturing of various types of prototype
miniature Loco models are also carried out time to
time.
TRAINEE HOSTEL & PLAYGROUND
Hostel TTC,for accommodation of Tr.SE’s,
Tr. JE’s, and Other Railway Trainees under training
in CLW. It has a seat capacity of 100 Nos., a large
Dining & Kitchen, with a very pleasant atmosphere.
Two Play Grounds are used by trainees regularly
and In house &Departmental Tournaments are
organized here with a grate encouragement.

MODEL ROOMS
Main attraction of visitors is the ancient
Steam Loco & Boiler models in Antic Model
Room. There are few models on Power
Transmission devices and Electrical circuits
for practical demonstration to the trainees.
Miniature running models of CLW build 3
Phase electric locomotives available and are
used to display in the national level
Exhibitions several times.
COMPUTER TRAINING
08 nos. of PC’s with windows_7 application
software is available for practical training
for Supervisors & ministerial staff of CLW.

There are 09 nos. well-equipped classrooms

Garden is decorated with beautiful seasonal
flowers, Palm trees, green lawn situated in
front of TTC building. There is also a
stationary fountain with many colorful tubs.
In winter season the whole surrounding
spread with charming aroma of seasonal
