President’s MessageIt’s hard to believe that August is over, kids are back in school so, it must be time to go Fishing !

Our good friend and Fly fisher guide David D’Deaupre has agreed to hold a Streamside presenta-tion to be held on Saturday September, 21st. This will be the same time of the Fly fishing Fair in Mammoth. The Fair will be held on September 20th through the 22nd. Let’s make plans to attend and show our club presence at the Fair! We will be circulating a sign-up sheet at the next meeting.

The Hi-Desert Flyfishers just held a Bar-B-Q, potluck picnic at Hesperia Lake. Hot dogs and Hamburgers were provided by the club. Side dishes were brought by the members. Grand kids and kids had a great time playing in the park, swings and slides. The Big kids (adults) shared stories and had stimulating conversa-tion.

Food was consumed and enjoyed by all. Darlene Bull-ock brought her world famous Brownies for dessert and was devoured by all. Steve brought Fly rods and Hula hoops to practice our fly casting. Larry Longuei-ra’s grandson, Jonas, had never cast a fly rod before.

Larry along with Paul Sinclair, had Jonas casting a pretty good loop by the end of the session. Several members tried casting into the middle of the Hoops for accuracy, when all was finished, Michael Miranda came out on top with 14 dead centers into the hoops! We stayed until the late evening and all had a very good time. Can’t wait until the next one!

Coming up, Saturday, October 19, we will be host-ing our second Project Healing Waters at Jess Ranch Lakes. We would like to make this event better than the last one by having our Volunteers, bring more fold up chairs and easy-ups. If anyone has any suggestions on how to make this event a really good one, please contact me at the next meeting.

Our speaker this month will be yours truly. I will be speaking on the Mono Village and Twin Lakes Bridge-port area…See you all at the next meeting……Steve.

Fly of the Month

I haven’t received a Fly of the Month pattern. I missed this and the person sending it to me forgot to send it.

Sorry, but next month there will be a fly of the month.

SWCFFF is looking for an event coordinator

The Southwest Council Federation of Fly Fishers (SWC FFF) is in need of someone to coordinate some of our events. One of the purposes of the Council is to increase outreach to the general public. Some of these events include the Fred Hall Show in both Long Beach and Del Mar, Sport Chalet, Fly Fishing Film Tour and others that come our way throughout the year. The job would be to keep track of these events, decide how many and what type of volunteers are needed for each one and generally be the liaison between the Council and these groups.

If you are the type to help us create a movement to-wards more fly anglers in SoCal and Southern Nevada, we want you.

This description makes it sound like a full time job. In reality, would only take a few hours each month. For more information, contact Michael Schweit (818) 601 9702 or [email protected]. Please join us in this quest to show everyone we have the greatest sport around.

Native Lahontan Cutthroats Aided byFly Fishing Clubs and IFFF

BRIDGEPORT, Calif. - California Lahontan cutthroat trout, squeezed out of their native Sierra habitat by illegally planted brook trout, will be reestablished and nurtured by a consortium of local fly-fishing clubs and the Southwest Council-International Federation of Fly Fishers (SWC-IFFF) in cooperation with the Califor-nia Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW).

Target area is Silver Creek in the West Walker River watershed near Bridgeport.

A base camp will be established at the headwaters of Silver Creek and a team of 4-5 people will assist the CDFW with electro-fishing. The goal of this multi-year event is to eradicate the non-native brook trout so the stream can sustain a currently imperiled population of Lahontan cutthroat trout. Upon completion, Silver Creek will be opened to angling.

The project is being spearheaded by Debbie Sharpton, Oak Park, Conservation Chair of the San Fernando Valley-based Sierra Pacific Flyfishers and Conserva-tion Director of the SWC-IFFF; and Gary Applebee, president of Deep Creek Flyfishers. CDFW coordina-tor is fisheries biologist Dawne Becker Emery.

A project lead gift of $5,000 from the Sierra Pacific Flyfishers club was shepherded by Sharpton. Funding is being sought from all clubs within SWC-IFFF and other interested organizations or individuals.Volunteers are needed to assist with this effort. Infor-mation for volunteering and donating is available at http://southwestcouncilfff.org/Conservation/swc-ifff-

conservation.

The brook trout elimination will take place from July 24th and end on Sept 22nd, said Emery.

According to the Bishop-based biologist, “Silver Creek, a tributary to the West Walker River in Mono County, is Lahontan cutthroat trout recovery water that was illegally stocked with brook trout. Brook trout were discovered in Silver Creek in 2004 duringa survey intended to collect baseline population in-formation to support opening the stream to regulated angling. Lack of ability to utilize efficient methods of brook trout removal that could be completed within two or three seasons has resulted in the lost opportuni-ty of angling for a native Walker Basin cutthroat trout in this mountain meadow stream.”

Removal of the voracious brook trout will be ac-complished with the introduction of an Alaskan weir, modified to fit the stream, within one mile from the headwaters of Silver Creek.

Immediately downstream of the headwaters, block nets with approximately 1/4-inch mesh will be placed within the channel, where brook trout removal will oc-cur incrementally within block netted sections, work-ing downstream to the weir.

You can help by going to the SWC_IFFF website:

http://southwestcouncilfff.org/Conservation/swc-ifff-conservation

There are three ways you can help;

1) donate your time,

2) donate money as a club and

3) donate money as an individual.

You can send Gary Applebee an e-mail at;[email protected] or send Debbie Sharpton an e-mail at; [email protected] to talk more about helping on this project.

This project will end on September 22nd for this year. You can come to the Faire to help out on Saturday and Sunday.

HDFF Newsletter EditorWe are looking for someone to take over the newslet-ter. Gary is taking some college science classes and will not have time to do the HDFF newsletter as well as homework. He will help train the new person on how to put it together.

Hi Desert Fly Fishers PicnicHesperia Lake, Mojave Narrows

After months and years of being just a dry hole in the ground, Horseshoe Lake in Mojave Narrows Regional Park is full again. Currently the only fish that have been restocked in the lake are catfish. The last stock-ing of catfish for the year will be in late September, and after that the lake will be stocked with trout for the winter season. If you never got a chance to fish Horseshoe Lake in the old days, it used to be a better than average bass and panfish lake, plus the addition of trout during the winter was always fun to fish. Cur-rently the fees for fishing Mojave Narrows are $8.00 per person for fishing, and $8.00 for parking on week-days, $10.00 for parking on weekends.

High Desert Fly Fishers members gathered at Hesperia Lake in August. They weren’t there to go fishing, but they were there for some relaxation and to eat a bar-beque meal of either hot dogs or hamburgers. Several members brought various side dishes, and the food was great.

Most of the cooking chores were handled by Club President Steve Plantenga and Larry Longueira. The club did have fly rods and casting rings available for a bit of casting competition, but nobody wanted to get out of their lawn chairs and cast. We had a fine time just swapping stories about fishing (and probably a few tall tales as well). There were more than a dozen High Desert members, and their families attending. If you missed it, you missed a lot of fun.
