President’s Letter — by David Liebschutz

Friends,

It’s August and the proverbial “Dog Days of Summer.” Despite some above average temperatures and severe storms th is summer, many of us have enjoyed the long days and generally good riding weather.

It’s also been nice to see that a number of long neglected roads have gotten some fresh paving to make those miles in the saddle more pleasant.

I wanted to bring to your attention several upcoming events:

E AUGUST 28TH: “Three Foot” Ride. In concert with our friends at the New York Bicycling Coalition (NYBC), we are planning a ride to highlight the need for a law to protect cyclists and pedestrians from unsafe vehicle traffic.

While we came close this year to gaining passage of the law, it wasn’t close enough, and we will redouble our efforts next year to get this written into law as it is in over two dozen other states. We will also get to show off our new MHCC club jerseys at this ride. Consult the web site for the latest news on the ride.

E SEPTEMBER 10TH-11TH: MHCC Century Weekend. Our major event of the year is the annual MHCC Century Weekend in Saratoga. Headed once again by Jonathan Benn and his crack team of volunteers, it is the signature event of our year. We still need volunteers for a number of jobs, which is not only a great way to serve your fellow club members, you save $35 in the process and get to enjoy one of the most wonderful rides of the year. See the form in this month’s BikeAbout or go on-line to register at: www.bikereg.com/mhcccenturyweekend.

E SEPTEMBER 30TH: Ride for Missing Children. This 100-mile charity ride to benefit the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children/New York Branch (NCMEC/NY) is organized by MHCC board member, Dan Craven, and is a worthy cause to get involved with. Training rides are organized during the summer at multiple locations. Sag support is available for riders on event day and during most training rides. For more information, contact Dan, and to register go to: http://bit.ly/29UVD64.

Finally, it is with some sadness that I acknowledge the passing of a long time MHCC member, Jim Woodruff, from cancer on June 30th. Jim was active in the MHCC for many years and led many rides. According to long-time club member and former board member, Frank Kelly: “Jim was a great person and ride leader... organized, considerate, enthusiastic... everything good you could say.” Our condolences go out to Jim’s family.

Hope to see many of you out on the roads this month and at the Century in September.
