A narrative follows: _x_ Yes ____ No Submission Deadline: 1 April 2014 Youth Service Award 2013-14 The views youth service, education and citizenship development as a primary goal. Our club meets in the Kapolei High School, emphasizing our commitment to education. Our very close working relationship with Interact has been rewarding. We sponsor the Kapolei High School Interact, with about 85 members, as well as the growing Nanakuli Interact with 12 members. Our Rotarians work with the advisors weekly to assist these clubs. In addition, we have a very active Earlyact of 50 members with four advisors at Kapolei Middle School. The future Rotarians in these clubs do much for the community. The Earlyact club ran a very successful beach and area cleanup at White Plains Beach. The Kapolei Interact Club has worked fund-raisers and the donated to community projects. They worked with us to feed veterans at the U.S. Veterans shelter on Thanksgiving, and they participated in Spookypalooza, a community Halloween project at the Hawaiian Railway, as well as helping at a Rotarians at Work Day project at the railroad. Each of these interact clubs is active in the Interact Convention. We held a very successful joint social for Interact members from Waianae, Nanakuli, and Kapolei, fostering an exchange of good ideas and teamwork. Nanakuli Interact members held a fund-raiser carwash and created and sold cookbooks with recipes they had gathered, to support community activities. Given the limited attendance and cost for students to attend RYLA, our club sponsored a mini-RYLA, combining a half day service project at Camp Timberline with a half day of team activities and leadership training. We filled the event to capacity at 85 students from area schools (Kapolei, Nanakuli, Waianae, and Waipahu High Schools) and the event won high praise from the participants.

District 5000, Hawaii AWARDS SUBMISSION FORM 2013-2014 Our commitment to education extends to scholarships. Several of our members serve on the board of the Kapolei Foundation which is constituted to award scholarships to area students. Each year, through donations from the Rotary Club and through our participation in other community activities, this foundation has awarded twenty scholarships in conjunction out our club. In addition, the just held a golf tournament in mid-March which enabled us to fund eleven additional scholarships. Summed up, our club is committed to our future, our young men and women, and works diligently to support their education and their good citizenship.

District 5000, Hawaii AWARDS SUBMISSION FORM 2013-2014

--It is no exaggeration to say that Youth Services is the core commitment in our Avenues of Service program. We shared that goal with the other eight RCs on Maui. AG Joanne Laird, who has been a driving force for RYLA on Maui, and the nine Maui Club Presidents, agreed before the Rotary Year even began to work together to move RYLA from the Boy Scout Camp at Maluhia to the YMCA Camp on the Keanae Peninsula. Our club members were actively involved in planning and promoting this event. 10-12 members participated in the Seabury Hall Community Service Fair to promote Interact and the RYLA event to Seabury students. Three Interactors were selected for RYLA and sponsored by our club. --Reflecting WASRAG’s strategy of “programs not projects,” we have adopted Lokelani Intermediate School as an ongoing program, with several DGs going to projects over the last three years. This year, one of our DGs went to a joint project with Kihei Sunrise to donate more than $2,000 to book purchases to launch their new library. Curriculum Director Penny Templeton spearheaded the new library project, and we worked in close consultation with her to select books and solicit the help of Barnes and Noble to stage a Book Fair and arrange substantial subsidies going forward. Similarly, another DG ($1,200) provided a new refrigerator for the Kihei Youth Center’s certified kitchen, as the KYC ramps up its Kids’ Café to accommodate Backpack Buddies, a new Maui Food Bank program. We also implemented a DG project ($3,000) to equip a “Digital Bus” for the Kihei Charter School, where we are sponsoring a new Interact Club. -- We are very proud of our involvement in Rotary Youth Exchange. This year we are sponsoring Sarah Armstrong from Seabury Hall, who is spending the Rotary year in Italy. We are also sponsoring her attendance at the Rotary Youth Peace Conference in Israel. Member Mark Harbison is the SCANEX RYE Country Coordinator for Japan, Korea, and the Philippines. Our support for RYE at Seabury Hall has been the basis for an expanded relationship with their Interact Club. --The Maui Keiki and Youth Festival at the Kihei Youth Center (October 12) is another long-term commitment, along with our annual Merit Scholarship for a KYC student. The Festival has grown over the last three years from a Kihei event sponsored by KYC and Senator Roz Baker to an all-iland Festival with many schools and youth clubs participating. 16 members participated this year. We donated $200 to provide grade-level books for the event, and run a joint booth with Kihei Sunrise to promote Rotary and Interact. --In addition to our participation in HYRF, the Club awarded more than $3,000 worth of scholarships and stipends this year including 1. A merit scholarhip of $1,000 to a Kihei Youth Center student for vocational or college study, 2. A merit scholarship of $1,000 to an HYRF applicant who was not selected for the final interview, and 3. An $800 stipend for our RYE student Sarah Armstrong to attend the Rotary Youth Peace Conference in Israel in April. --Speaking of programs vs. projects, we participated in the District 5000 Literacy Project with dictionaries going to 3rd graders at Montessori Hale O Keiki Kihei on Maui and 4 schools on Molokai. --We continue to support the Newspapers in the Schools program with an annual $500 donation. --As one of the founding sponsors of the Rotaract Club of UH Maui Campus we continue our support for that program.

District 5000, Hawaii AWARDS SUBMISSION FORM 2013-2014 Overview. Our top two projects were the Dictionary Project, and the activities involving Aiea High School (AHS) Interact, whom we continued to sponsor and partner with for various projects. Dictionary Project (BEST #1). This year, we increased our responsibility 140%, going from 5 to 12 elementary schools in the Aiea and Pearl City localities. We received these schools from Pearl Harbor and Kapolei Rotary clubs, who agreed with that we should align with schools in our immediate surrounding areas. Community Service Co-Chair Mark Smith allowed us to store and prepare the dictionaries at his place of business. Over 800 dictionaries were distributed to eagerly awaiting 3rd graders, and this is also the first time we experienced private school students reciting the Four-Way Test. About 10 RCP members participated, allowing several members the rare chance to make up for their weekly absences. Sponsored an Interact Club / Participated with an Interact or Rotaract club on a service activity or fellowship event (BEST #2). We sponsored three students to attend the Interact Conference in March, allowing them to meet other Interactors and share their experiences. We also conducted five (5) activities with Interact club: two (2) food drives, one (1) fitness camp, one (1) community parade, and one (1) school fair. AHS Interact students hosted their first food drive at Times Supermarket in Aiea, near their school and homes, in November. Youth Services Co-Chair Greg Arakaki setup the paperwork, and invited RCP members to assist. We managed to collect a total of 399 lbs. and $1,000 in cash and checks with the AHS students benefiting the Hawaii Foodbank. We reciprocated by inviting the AHS students to participate in District 5000’s Rotary Rice Rally in January, where together we collected a 1,100 lbs of rice or an average of 28.2 lbs per Pearlridge Rotarian. While just under the district’s target goals of 30 lbs per Rotarian, RCP demonstrated that it could do its part for the Food Bank. The Interact club Vice-President held a Fitness Camp for her fellow students in the AHS gymnasium, and 10 RCP members volunteered to assist with the stations. In December, member Cheryl shuttled AHS Interact to the starting point of the Aiea Community Association Holiday parade. There, the AHS Interact were joined by members Doreen, Rick, Ralph, and Greg, and they marched all the way to the old Aiea Sugar Mill site. Finally, about 12 members signed up to participate in AHS Family Fun Fair, where they will assist with game booths and raise funds for the students. Ready to Learn (R2L) School Supply Drive. This was THE first project of the year, preparing needy students for their upcoming school year. President Lasar and her kids spearheaded the project and took on “backpack” collections for several weeks. Having collection receptacles at the meetings available over several weeks allowed up to one-half the club to contribute. That said, we collected $100 in cash, and a heaping 45 lbs worth of supplies. Sponsored a student to a RYLA program this year. Our club committed to sponsoring three students to attend the Oahu RYLA camp which will occur in April. Participated in a scholarship program (HRYF, TRF, club or other) by funding the scholarship program or nominating a student. We continued to participate in HRYF by contributing our annual obligation and participating in the candidate interviews. Participated in a career development program, mentoring, ethics, or other project. We held training sessions with AHS students on peer mediation and event planning allowed the students to improve their leadership skills. Youth Services Co-Chair had a discussion with Interact Club Members on interviewing tips during one of their regular meetings.
