Cloverleaf May 2011 THANK YOU SOUTHERN TRINITY 4-H CLUB FOR YOUR DONATION TO THE 4-H COUNCIL. Southern Trinity 4-H Club donated $300 to our Council funds to help pay for our annual operating expenses – such as buying ribbons, and medals for our county events. Southern Trinity 4-H also paid for the rental of the dining hall at the fairgrounds for Presentation Day this year! This club has been a consistent annual supporter of the county program. Your dedication to our program is appreciated. TRINITY COUNTY 4-H ART EXTRAVAGANZA There were many beautiful entries in the second annual 4-H Art Extravaganza held on April 16 th at the fairgrounds. Please look inside this issue of the Cloverleaf for award results, and photos of the artwork and of the day’s activities. The Art Extravaganza is the All Star project of the 2009-2011 Trinity County 4-H All Stars – Aren Lane and GeorgeAnn DeAntoni. We had wonderful entries this year including paint- ings, drawings, photos, paper mache, and woodworking! Our judges, Debbie Olson and Buck Steele, were pleased with the creativity of our 4-H members. Local artist and author, Linda McGinnis, led the art activity again this year for all the members and parents who attended the event. This year she taught how to make a ‘notan’ cutout paper design, which emphasizes learning to see the ‘negative’ space in art. Everyone had fun making the notan, and some beautiful and intricate pieces were created! Don’t forget to enter those pieces in the Trinity County Fair this summer! A big thank you goes to our All Stars and to the Grass Valley Creek 4-H club for hosting the event. The top two entries in each class and age category will be on display at the Trinity County Library in Weaverville for the month of May – please go take a look if you get the chance. TRINITY COUNTY PRESENTATION DAY has been rescheduled to Saturday, May 14, 2011. The event will now take place at the dining hall at the fairgrounds in Hayfork. 4-H Council News: Mrs. Millsap has stepped up to fill the position of President of the 4-H Council. She has served as the Vice President for a number of years. Mrs. Brookins has agreed to serve as the Vice Presi-dent of the 4-H Council, filling the position left vacant by Mrs. Millsap. Thank you to both of these ladies. Elections for the upcoming 2-year term on the 4-H Council executive board will be held at the August 10th Council meeting. We are in great need of 4-H volunteers who would like to make a real difference and con-tribute to our program by being council officers. The 4-H Council meets six times per year. All Star Applications for the 2011/2012 year are due May 2, 2011 to the 4-H Office. Being an All Star is the highest 4-H honor at the county level. Older 4-H youth who qualify should think about applying to be an All Star for this next year. Qualifications to apply to be an All Star are listed on the application – it is available on our 4-H county website. WE REALLY NEED ONE OR MORE ALL STARS FOR THE 2011/2012 4-H YEAR! Trinity 4-H Summer Camp information and a registration form will be in the June/July Cloverleaf. Attention Club Leaders & Club Officers: Officer Training Day for the 2011/2012 4-H year will be held September 24th. This means your club should elect their officers for the coming year at the August or early September club meetings. We want all the newly elected club officers to attend Officer Training Day to learn the duties of their office, and how to run the monthly club meetings. Club meetings should be run entirely by the youth once they have been trained. 4-H is about the kids learning new skills! Nutrition Recommendation: The 4-H Council would like to affirm their support of the State policy of encouraging that nutritional foods are served at 4-H events and meetings. In support of this we ask that no sodas, or ‘Koolaid’ type of beverages be served at 4-H activities. Small Market Animal members: We have been asked to remind all the small market animal members who sell at the fair to be sure to ask your buyer for instructions regarding the delivery of their butch-ered animals. If you are unable to talk to the buyer directly after the sale, be sure to contact the Fair Office for the contact information of your buyer. This is important! Incentives & Recognition committee update: The I&R committee met following the April Council meeting. Two items of interest were discussed and decided as follows. To be in line with the state guidelines, only gold medal winners at County Presentation Day will be eligible to advance to Sectional and State competition.

The percent scoring breakdown for each award level will be standardized among all the 4-H county events which include competition. An example of this would be that 90-100% will be the point range for the ‘blue ribbon, or gold medal’ for all the county events. The next meeting of the Incentives and Recognition committee will take place directly following the August 10th 4-H Council meeting. We will discuss additional items relating to the star ranking awards, and record book policies.

Congratulations to Kenny Johnson of the Hayfork Timberjacks 4-H. He found the hidden clover on page 7 of the April newsletter!! If you’re new to Trinity County 4-H, we wanted to let you know that we have a “Hidden Clover” contest which consists of finding the 4-H clover hidden somewhere in each issue of the Cloverleaf newsletter. It will never be hidden on either the front or back pages, but WILL be hidden in some unexpected places and is usually very small! So keep your eyes open, and call or email the 4-H Office at (530)628-5495, or [email protected], and tell us where you found the clover. Your name will be included in the monthly drawing for a cool prize! By the way, the hidden clover will look like this: This is only an example...the hidden one is SMALLER!

2011 STATE 4-H FIELD DAY MAY 28, 2011 AT UC DAVIS 8:00AM TO 6:00PM

Since 2002, the State 4-H Field Day takes place annually on the Satur-day of Memorial Day weekend at the UC Davis campus from 8:00am until 6:00pm. The event is open to all 4-H members, volunteers, staff, and parents. Between 1,000 and 1,400 people attend the event. The event has a ‘picnic’ feel as people bring chairs and socialize for the day on the Wellman Hall east lawn. The State 4-H Office provides coordi-nation and facility support. Each contest and activity is coordinated by a group of 4-H staff, volunteers, and youth.

During the event, 4-H members may participate in a variety of contests. Some contests require pre-qualification and/or pre-registration. Some are open to all during the event. Here is a list of some of the fun events you can expect to witness or take part in at State 4-H Field Day: • State Presentation Day (pre-qualification/pre-registration required) • State 4-H Fashion Revue (pre-qualification/pre-registration required) Volunteer judges provide feedback

on 4-H members’ clothing and chosen accessories using criterion-based rubrics. Other activities open to ALL members include service, craft, judging and fashion activities, county displays and a fashion show.

• State 4-H Photography Contest: (pre-registration required) 4-H members may submit two photographs in various categories. Contact John Trammel at [email protected] for more information.

• State 4-H Film Festival (requires pre-registration) Provides a venue for teams of 4-H members to show-case their films.

• State Interview Contest (pre-registration required) Before this contest, 4-H members select a mock job and develop a cover letter and resume. At the event, 4-H members are interviewed and evaluated by 3 judges using a rubric.

• Festival of Science Curious about how things work? Want to know more about something? University Scientists will answer your questions! Provide your question ahead of the event and we will try to find the right scientists to provide answers to the most commonly asked questions. Contact: Steven Worker at [email protected] or Kali Trzesniewski at [email protected].

• 4-H Horse Classic Equine Educational Contests: these contests provide an opportunity for youth to gain knowledge and skills and be recognized for their efforts. The State Winners in the senior division are given the opportunity to represent California at the National 4-H Horse Classic in Denver Colorado in January 2012!

2011 State Leaders' Forum: The Magic of 4-H - Transformation November 11-13, 2011, Asilomar Conference Grounds, Pacific Grove, California , Hosted by North Central Section

Hop on to the magic carpet for an extraordinary experience. Your ride will whisk you to the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, nestled next to the roaring Pacific Ocean. The magical beauty of the area is enough to make a weekend at Asilomar an outstanding destination. However, The Magic of 4-H – Transformation, held on November 11 – 13, 2011, will enhance the mystical aura of your adventure.

11.11.11 is the opening day of California State 4-H Leaders’ Forum. Look for some special events and activities to cele-brate this awesome date. In addition we have arranged for a full moon on November 10 so the lunar glow will still be visi-ble for your enjoyment while attending the Forum.

Tradition and Transformation inspire an idea we would like to toss out to you: take some time to think about refreshing some part of your project work/programs/activities. Then consider making that happen with your fellow 4-H volunteers and staff at SLF 2011.

Knowledge & Education make the world go ‘round. We all know that our self-education is vitally important. The work-shops and assemblies at SLF provide an excellent opportunity for each of us to expand our learning and inspire our inter-ests. Every topic brings a revelation to us and ensures that our education extends through our lifetimes.

For Continuity and Change try mentally walking through your project slowly, quietly and see what new ideas pop out at you. If you need a jump start for this exercise, join us at SLF 2011 for some creative and sure fire ways to open your eyes and stir your imagination. It is certainly easy and comfortable to keep the routines we all have, but we encourage you to try something new. Just a little something. You just might surprise yourself how much fun it can be.

The 4-H State Leadership Conference brings together high school youth from across California in a four-day leader-ship training, networking, and learning experience. The conference provides advanced leadership training and is an opportunity for 4-H members to network and share ideas with other 4-Hers from across the state. The conference focuses on providing high school youth with experiential education on leadership development, civic engagement, college admissions and other 4-H project areas.

Youth delegates gain exposure to the campus by living in the residence halls, eating in the dining commons, and participating in educational sessions, many of which are taught by UC faculty and staff. The conference is planned by a team of high school 4-H members and adult advisors. Working in strong youth-adult partnership, the team de-signs the educational, recreational and logistical components of the conference.

Participants: California high-school-aged 4-H members (14-19 years old)
