Mending lives with empowerment

The appealing appearance of MEND’s Clothing Center

is made possible by team members like Mary Castillo,

a client who became a volunteer and later a temporary

employee for the Clothing Center. Mary understood

immediately the importance of treating each client

with dignity and ensuring only quality garments are

offered.

Through her experience in the Clothing Center, Mary

also helped herself, gaining professional skills and job

experience. “I have more confidence now,” said Mary.

“Working with our clients and being in charge in the

clothing department really helped prepare me for my

current job.” For Mary, MEND’s holistic approach to

dealing with poverty helped her find a pathway to self-

reliance. It is a lesson she is now sharing with others.

Mending Lives with Hope

MEND is the largest, most comprehensive poverty agency

in the San Fernando Valley. With the support of over 5,000

volunteers annually, MEND provides assistance in the form

of emergency food, clothing, medical and dental care, job

training and placement, English as a Second Language

classes, shower facilities for the homeless, and other social

services to as many as 38,000 low-income clients monthly.

Mending Lives with Sharing

HOW CAN I DONATE?

Donations are received from individuals, churches, and community groups. In addition, a number of film studios and stores contribute inventory.

VOLUNTEER DONATE SHARE

Make a difference in someone’s life!

Businesses and Stores: Clear out unwanted inventory and receive a tax credit.

Individuals: Share what you no longer wear or use.

We pick-up and provide tax receipts.

Large donations will be mentioned on our website and/or social media.

MEND affirms that every person has innate

human dignity and the right to be treated

with respect. Our diverse volunteers,

spanning all generations, work collectively

to end poverty and help individuals build

self-esteem and independence.

MEND’S Unique Characteristics

Programs are privately funded without government

grants.

MEND is 99% volunteer-powered, allowing people in

the larger community to make a difference in the lives

of the poor.

Over 94% of each donation goes directly to our

service recipients.

Fundraising, grant writing, and public relations are

largely conducted by volunteers.

Staff is hired only when programs grow too large for

volunteers to manage.

Programs are designed to develop self-reliance.

Small donations for services are accepted based on

recipient’s ability to contribute.
