Concentra Medical Centers takes an aggressive, sports medicine approach to the rehabilitation of work-related injuries – the industrial athlete if you will. The majority of patients are seen within the first few days of injury while sill in the acute phase. Early intervention, combined with a strong team approach between the physical therapists and the physicians minimizes the patients’ recovery period. As a result, Concentra Medical Centers experiences rapid patient turnover which creates an excellent opportunity for students to sharpen their general outpatient orthopedic evaluative skills. Patient education is strongly emphasized. It is important for each injured worker to understand the mechanism of injury, the associated anatomy, what to expect during the recovery process, the importance of prescribed home exercise programs and home modality care, and how to prevent re-injury through utilization of proper posture and lifting / body mechanics. This knowledge empowers the patient with a sense of control over the circumstances and creates a positive attitude toward return to full duty. Special learning opportunities may include accompanying one of our physical therapists onto a job site for observation of the testing involved to help industry comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act for both return to work as well as pre-employment / post offer issues. Our physical therapists are experts in the ADA and valuable knowledge may be gained by the student which may be beneficial to him/her as he/she begins his/her professional career.
