Background Information
his document is designed to help you in the Assessment of Clinical
Practice for the BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy and MSc Physiotherapy
Programmes by providing you with guidance on the assessment process. The
document provides advice on the use of the Clinical Practice Assessment
Forms.
Learning in practice is an integral part of both the BSc (Hons) and MSc
Physiotherapy. Each placement through the integration of practice based
learning and university based modules assists the student to understand the
relevance of all their learning to practice and how practice informs their
learning. Each student has been provided with a Personal and Professional
Development File designed to help him/her reflect on his/her learning
experience. This file, a student-owned document, is intended to provide a
framework for developing self-awareness and evaluation. Use of the file
facilitates practice based learning and development of the student across the
clinical practice placements.
Practice based learning occurs over eight placements in the BSc (Hons)
Physiotherapy Programme and seven placements in the MSc Physiotherapy. In
the initial placements students will develop their self-management,
interpersonal and professional practice skills related to assessment, moving and
handling and simple treatment skills. Through the middle of the programmes
the student’s management of practice skills will progress so that they are able
to begin their development as autonomous practitioners. The ability to self-
reflect should become evident in their Communication and Interpersonal Skills
and the professional practice skills of assessment and reasoning and treatment
and evaluation are emphasised. In the final placements the student continues to
develop their management and Communication and Interpersonal Skills with
the ability to self-reflect and apply the skill in practice clearly evident. The
student should be critically aware of the context in which they practice. The
clinical reasoning skills are demonstrated in practice and clinical decisions are
supported by the available evidence.
In the progression through the programmes the level of support required will
decrease as the student develops into an autonomous practitioner. The student’s
ability to critically appraise the evidence for practice and integrate it into
management strategies will become evident.
Students should use their Personal and Professional Development File, to
help them to set Additional Learning Outcomes at the beginning of each

placement. These should be set in negotiation with their clinical educator. The
Additional Learning Outcomes should be agreed between the student and
Clinical Educator at the beginning of the placement. These should be recorded
on the Learning Outcomes and Additional Learning Outcomes Form.
About Additional Learning Outcomes
Each clinical placement on the course is assessed against a series of learning
outcomes. These outcomes can be found on the Learning Outcomes and
Additional Learning Outcomes Form. The learning environment will differ
for each clinical placement; therefore the learning experience gained by each
student will vary. A student may enter the placement with different individual
and clinical development needs. By negotiating Additional Learning
Outcomes at the beginning of the placement these development needs can be
met. The Learning Outcomes and Additional Learning Outcomes Form
provides a section for the outcomes to be recorded.
Clinical Educators offer specialist key skills in their clinical practice module,
e.g. manual hyperinflations on respiratory placements; these key skills can
form the basis of Additional Learning Outcomes. Where Additional
Learning Outcomes have been set the Clinical Educator should expect to see
evidence that the outcome has been met. For example the student may be asked
to conduct a seminar/teaching session or the Clinical Educator may elect to
observe and discuss the skill with the student.
About the Assessment Form
The Clinical Practice Assessment Form contains the competencies against
which the student should be marked for the placement. It consists of a series of
statements related to each of the key areas of practice. The statements and
grading sections for the key areas of practice are reflected on this form.
Each Learning Outcome corresponds to an area of practice indicated on the
Clinical Practice Assessment Form. These key areas of practice are listed
below.
BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy Clinical Practice 1 key areas of practice are:
A. Professional Conduct
B. Communication and Interpersonal Skills
BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy Clinical Practice 2 key areas of practice are:

The Purpose of Assessment
The Practice Based Learning undertaken by the student forms part of the
assessment for the module of study. Each module comprises a period of
academic study and practice based learning experience. The academic
component is assessed by a summative assessment whilst the practice based
learning is formatively assessed. At the end of the placement the clinical
educator will decide whether the student has reached a threshold level of
competence for each of the four areas of clinical practice. The student will be
marked as pass or fail for each area. The student must achieve a pass for each
area of clinical practice to pass the module. In addition should the student fail
to gain a pass for the section on professional suitability they will be deemed to
have failed the module.
The assessment of clinical practice is designed to:–
Promote the personal and professional development of physiotherapy
students.
Develop students as reflective practitioners.
Provide feedback to students, clinical educators, lecturers and examiners on
the standards of proficiency achieved by students in professional practice.
Provide evidence of the achievement of the core outcomes of the course.
Whilst learning in practice students benefit from feedback on performance and
areas for development both within the placement and in future practice

placements. The process of clinical supervision and the maintenance of a
practice journal in the Personal and Professional Development File can
provide the student with evidence of their learning and development during the
placement. Formative feedback from the clinical educator will enable students
to reflect on the experience and continue their development in future practice
based learning. The frequency of formative feedback sessions will be
negotiated between the clinical educator and student (a brief weekly review is
recommended).
Carrying out the assessment procedure
A suggested sequence of actions for a Clinical Educator during a clinical
period is as follows –
Study the assessment document carefully to ensure understanding before
the start of the clinical period.
Discuss any problems or outstanding points with the Visiting Tutor at any
time.
Negotiate any Additional Learning Outcomes with the student at the
beginning of the placement.
Negotiate the frequency of formative feedback sessions.
Observe the student’s behaviour on a regular basis. Do not base your
judgement on too short a period of time or infrequent observation.
About half way through the period, a mid-placement appraisal must be
arranged. Constructive feedback at this stage will help to facilitate
professional development through the placement. A copy of the Clinical
Practice Final and ½ way Assessment Form should be used as a record of
the feedback given.
In order to facilitate this mid-placement appraisal, students are expected to
make use of their Personal and Professional Development File and to
refer to any Additional Learning Outcomes to facilitate their self-
assessment of strengths and weaknesses.

7
If you identify any weaknesses in the student’s performance, you must record this
and give the student feedback so that they have the opportunity to take the
remedial action necessary to succeed in the latter part of the placement. This
means that you will need to recommend the steps you feel the student needs to
take to rectify his / her weaknesses. The visiting tutor should be involved at this
stage to give advice and guidance.
You will find that your use of the competences on the Clinical Practice Final
and ½ way Assessment Form and your additional comments will help you with
this. If the student is failing the placement he or she must be made aware of
this as soon as possible. If a student is ‘failing’ at this stage, it is important that
you record the reasons for failing and the action to be taken on the Danger of
Failure Notification Form.
Final Formative Assessment
Towards the end of the placement, an appraisal interview must be arranged.
You may elect to review any evidence the student has presented towards
meeting their learning outcomes at this stage.
A grade of Pass or Fail must be recorded for professional suitability and
each area of professional / clinical practice.
Constructive feedback on areas for development at this stage will help to
facilitate professional development and prepare the student for the next /
future placement(s). The feedback should be recorded in the comments
section on the Clinical Practice Final and ½ way Assessment Form and a
copy provided to the student for their Personal and Professional
Development File.
Assessment of Competence
At the end of the placement the clinical educator will decide whether the
student has reached a threshold level of competence for each of the four
areas of clinical practice and professional suitability
Should the student fail to gain a pass for the statement relating to
professional suitability they will be deemed to have failed the module.
The student will be marked as pass or fail for each area. The student must
achieve a pass for each area of clinical practice to pass the module.
Once completed the Clinical Practice Final and ½ way Assessment Form
must be signed by the Clinical Educator. The student then signs the form to
confirm that they have seen and read the assessment.

The top copy of the Clinical Practice Assessment Documents should be
returned by the student to the Assignment Office on the first Wednesday
following the placement. The bottom copy should be retained by the
student.
About the Clinical Assessment Document
The four sections of the Clinical Assessment Document are:
Clinical Practice Final Assessment Summary Form.
Learning Outcomes and Additional Learning Outcomes Form.
Clinical Practice Final and ½ way Assessment Form.
Clinical Practice Danger of Failure Notification.
Please ensure you have the appropriate assessment documentation
matched to the student and placement.
The Clinical Practice Final Assessment Summary Form records the
assessment of competence and the overall comments on the student’s
performance in the placement.
The Learning Outcomes and Additional Learning Outcomes Form
provides space for the clinical educator and student to record the Additional
Learning Outcomes for each clinical placement. A copy of this form is
intended for inclusion in the student’s Personal and Professional
Development File. Students are expected to present evidence to support the
achievement of these outcomes prior to the final assessment.
The Clinical Practice Final and ½ way Assessment Form comprises of a
number of competency statements against which each student will be assessed.
It is designed to guide the clinical educator and student in the identification of
key skills, behaviour and aspects of clinical performance that are required in
clinical practice.
The Clinical Practice Final and ½ way Assessment Form provides space for
specific feedback on professional suitability and the four areas of clinical
practice. Copies of the sheet can be used at feedback sessions to facilitate the
student’s development from week to week. The comments section is invaluable
for the student as it helps to facilitate professional development and prepare the
student for future placements. Comments are also invaluable when writing

references for students. It can also be used to guide the setting of Additional
Learning Outcomes for the placement.
The Clinical Practice Danger of Failure Notification form should be used in
the event of a student performing below the threshold competency level. The
form provides a record for the university, the clinical educator and the student
of the feedback given and the steps you feel the student needs to take to rectify
his / her weaknesses.
