Executive Summary

Core Issue

With 1 out of 47 children in Utah diagnosed with Autism, Vivint has the opportunity to positively affect a large number of families with its home automation technology. According to research and focus group data, families will potentially see the product as a necessary aid and feel that the price is too expensive. This perception of Vivint’s product will prevent families from purchasing the technology.

Goal Improve the lives of Utah Families with autistic children by motivating them to purchase Vivint’s innovative home automation technology.

Objectives 1. Have 50 families with autistic children purchase Vivint home automation system by December 2014; 150 by July 2015. 2. Partner with three autism outreach programs: Autism Speaks Utah (national branch), Autism Council of Utah, Utah Autism Foundation, in Utah by December 2014.

3. Increase positive perception of Vivint to 60 percent within Utah by December 2014.

Vivint Gives More

Spring boarding off of Vivint’s successful phrase ‘Vivint Gives Back’, we will use the theme Vivint Gives More for this campaign aimed specifically at Autism. Depending on which group we are focusing on ‘Vivint Gives More’ will mean something different yet important. To families it means Vivint gives more time, peace and security. To special education directors and outreach programs it means Vivint gives more resources, hope and purpose. This theme will appear on all of the material for this campaign.

Key Publics

Autism Outreach Programs: Immediately reaching out to these organizations will give Vivint the credibility and ability to reach out to families. Creating a partnership with these organizations will also positively influence Vivint’s reputation.

Special Education Directors: Most children with autism are enrolled in schools. By reaching out to special education directors and focusing on them Vivint will tap into the best channel to reach families that have children with autism.

Families with Autistic Children: The most important group to focus on, families are the key to Vivint’s success. Not only will they purchase the product but they will influence their neighbors and Vivint’s reputation the most.

BACKGROUND

Introduction

Our team has performed intensive secondary research and analyzed primary research on autism and

the home alarm security industry to provide a report of the current situation surrounding the latest

Vivint Gives Back initiative. Our research has led us to an overall situation analysis and core issue

that will act as the foundation for our campaign goal and objectives, and lead us into the next stages

of our campaign.

The Client

Todd Pedersen and Keith Nellesen were both former summer salesmen and together decided to

create their own summer sales style business. In 1992, the two started a direct selling company

called Creative Concepts which sold pest control. Five years later Nellesen and Pedersen branched

out and started APX Alarm Security Solutions and were incorporated two years later.

For many years APX Alarm Security Solution expanded into a large company, putting it on the map of

large investors. In 2006 APX signed a multi-million dollar agreement with Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

This agreement allowed APX to spread across state lines into Canada. In the next four years the

company’s customer base grew more than 800 percent.

However, with this drastic growth came a bad reputation for shady sales tactics. Prosecutors in 12

different states sanctioned APX for using deceptive sales techniques. These states include the

following: Arkansas, California, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oregon, South

Carolina, Tennessee, Washington and Wisconsin. In an attempt to regain community trust and

approval, APX began a series of CSR campaigns in 2008 titled “Gives Back.”

With a terrible reputation APX was rebranded in 2011 to Vivint, which is a combination of “vive,”

meaning to live and “intelligent,” in hopes of better representing the company. The following year

Vivint was acquired by Blackstone Group for $2 billion. In the same year Forbes ranked Vivint 46th

out of 100 in America’s Most Promising Companies. Since the Blackstone Group acquisition Vivint has

received many awards including: 2013 People’s Choice Stevie Award for Favorite Customer Service

Provider, Silver Stevie Award for Customer Service Department of the Year, and the No. 2 “Top Job-

Creating Private Company in the U.S.” Tim Izatt, Vivint’s director of customer service, was also

awarded a Silver Stevie Award for Contact Center Leader of the Year.

Vivint has continued its CSR campaigns, raising thousands of dollars every year. In 2008, 90 Vivint

employees went to aid Hurricane Ike victims. In 2010 Vivint was the single largest contributor of

blood donations in Provo, Utah. In 2011, Vivint raised $1.25 million and had 7,500 person-hours of

service. In 2012, $1.77 million was raised and distributed to 20 different international relief

organizations. Last year Vivint raised more than $200,000 for its sixth annual Sub-for-Santa drive

which reached more than 3,000 children.

Your company has more than 800,000 customers and more than 7,000 employees. Along with its CSR

campaigns, Vivint has expanded into solar energy with Vivint Solar which was formed in 2011. Vivint

is a leader in technology with its touch screen displays and home security technology. This is the

company direction that Vivint wanted with an intelligent-living lifestyle.

The Industry

Vivint is in the industry of home security. You have recently extended the business and ventured into

the home automation, solar energy and energy management industries. However, Vivint is best

known for home alarm systems which are sold through a door-to-door selling strategy.

Vivint entered this industry in 1997 (as APX) and has since seen different management and names.

The industry of home security systems has continued to grow in recent years and Vivint has a lot of

competition, both locally and nationally. Vivint currently serves only America and Canada while some

competitors are expanding internationally. Some of the leaders in the industry are big-name

companies such as ADT Monitored Security System, First Alert (Honeywell), Broadview Security, ADT,

Pinnacle Security and LifeShield Home Security.

A large trend currently in the home security industry is to have control of home features from a

remote location through a smartphone. Many companies report this to be their most requested

feature. Another current trend is that customers desire more customized systems. Basic alarm

systems have been around for decades, and today's consumers demand customized systems that fit

their lifestyles and security needs. One of the largest trends seen in 2013 was the rise of home

automation. Home automation allows people to control home functions remotely, such as lighting

and temperature. While home automation has been around for years, it became adopted by the

mainstream in 2013 because technology has made it more accessible and cost efficient for the

average homeowner. According to ABI Research, home automation is expected to increase to 20

million installed units by 2017, up from 1.5 million in 2011. Vivint is up-to-date in all of these trends

and leads in some areas.

Within the industry of security, you’re testing services that will hopefully eventually assist with

families who have autistic children. Participants in our focus group praised the alarm system, saying

that it made it so they could rest easier knowing their children are safer and that they will be

notified when their child is in harm’s way. Participants unanimously praised the system for its ability

to keep their children safe. Some described it as a tool that could help save their children’s lives.

With the cost of many alarm systems on the rise, families with autistic children are weary that the

price might be too much. Many participants in the focus group said they would not be willing to pay

anything for the system as they already pay a high amount on therapy and prescription bills. Others

said they would pay about $30 to $40 a month for the system because it is what they can afford.

The Service

Vivint provides home security for paying customers. Home security can include a lot of things,

varying from different prices and packages. The main functions of Vivint home security packages are

as follows:

Home Automation: Connects all the technologies that run the home and allow for safety via

all technological devices. Remote controlled security and safety measures are included.

Energy Management: More for the control of energy usage in a home. Saves the earth’s

resources and supposedly, in the long run, money on energy bills. This one isn’t nearly as

applicable to our CSR as the others.

Home Security: This is purely for a secure home. Alarm systems are set throughout the house

with different monitors and detectors to ensure home safety.

With all the packages and options involved, the product that applies most to our target audience

would be the basic home security package. Included in this package is the following:

1 touch screen panel

3 door/window sensors

1 motion detector

1 key fob

1 yard sign

Severe weather alerts

Vivint Live wireless communication

Free app for remote monitoring

Additional features available

Pricing of installation varies from approximately $99-$199. For the non-profit families, they don’t

have to pay an installation fee. Further, they get a subsidized cost of $78 per month as opposed to

the regular package. The monthly payments also vary from package to package and depend on the

size of the home. Vivint offers a free quote to any family interested.

Vivint offers training on how to use security systems at the time of set up, but doesn’t come back

once the homeowner has become more comfortable with the system. Vivint offers a very dynamic

and helpful customer service line that is available at all hours of the day, for any inquiries

homeowners have about their systems. In a focus group, a sample of Vivint users agreed that a cheat

sheet, manual or some kind of online chat room to talk about different issues or questions with the

alarm system would be extremely helpful.

Not only do the alarms protect the family from outside threats like burglars, but they also protect

children by alerting parents of when they’re getting into the knife drawer or medicine cabinet. The

alarms allow guardians to be able to help their children quicker and easier. Further, the alarms help

children by curbing their destructive habits. The children quickly learn that when they get into a

dangerous cabinet, an alarm goes off. It causes them to be less likely to make these dangerous

decisions. There are distinct behavioral changes with autistic children when they adapt to the new

alarms and locks.

This product can vastly improve the life of a family struggling with the dangers of having an autistic

child in their home. The fear of their child harming themselves takes a great toll. With the home

security system features, there is a greater chance of being better prepared and proactive against

their child hurting themselves. Ultimately, families with autistic children agree that Vivint offers

only positive benefits in the safety of their homes and families.

Communication Environment

Vivint uses almost every social media platform in order to effectively communicate with its publics.

These include:

By having so many different forms of social media associated with the company, you’re effectively

reaching out to the various and diverse members who are their potential buyers and advocates. In

addition, by constantly staying connected with its publics, Vivint could possibly, over time, repair

the bad reputation which the firm has incurred. However, having multiple Instagram and Twitter

accounts could be confusing and problematic. You should focus on one account for each platform of

social media in order to stay organized and more sufficiently impact your target audience.

From our Nuvi research, we’ve learned that within the social media sphere, key words such as

“autism speaks”, “asd”, “families with autism”, “autism needs” and “autism spectrum” receive 38

mentions per hour, reaching a total of 7,386 mentions within a seven-day period. The most trending

keyword while searching these five terms was “children” with 1,421 mentions in the seven days. In

addition, the topic keyword frequency was “asd” with 3,035 mentions and the trending positive

terms include “want”, “will help”, “to support”, and “to share”. As Vivint begins announcing this

new program to support families with autism on social media, these keywords will be helpful in

directing them to the right publics and vice versa.

Competition/Stakeholder Distractors

Most companies that support Autism Speaks focus strictly on raising money and fundraising activity for autism research. They do not specifically create products that alleviate the burden of having autistic children in the home. This type of support for the cause is seen as mostly charitable because there is no real expectation of a return besides an image or reputation boost. Any company that seeks to alleviate the burden and still generate a profit can be known as a strategic business partner: helping the cause while still pushing business.

Due to the physical concerns for families with autistic children who have high risks for wandering, drowning and pica (consumption of non-edible substances), most parents have become experts at locating resources or products to help aid the safety of their autistic child, and have no problem pulling in resources from several different areas. Most companies market their products to several publics while very few companies and industries strictly market their products to autistic families. Companies that do focus on tracking and identification devices but do not solely specialize in those devices.

Donating money is better for image. Focusing on becoming a specialty company for autism isn’t an

area with much competition because most companies focus on the research aspect and not the

product. Most product-focused companies market to several publics with issues (young children,

senior citizens and other mental disabilities) because they deal with wandering and identity

problems.

The External Environment

Government Involvement with Autism

With the passing of the Affordable Care Act several changes to the medical coverage of autism have

taken effect:

1. Americans of all ages cannot be denied coverage for existing conditions including autism.

2. New health insurance plans or insurance policies must cover preventive services without

cost-sharing, including autism screening for children at 18 and 24 months.

3. Insurance companies will no longer be able to impose lifetime dollar limits on coverage,

including for the treatment of autism.

4. Young adults can remain covered under their parents’ insurance up to the age of 26.

5. Health insurers will have annual out-of-pocket limits to protect families’ incomes against

the high cost of health care services.

These changes to health care coverage may reduce the financial burden on families with autistic

members, allowing them to allot more money to assistive technologies, such as those provided by

Vivint, depending on each family’s current coverage and financial standing.

Other sources of government funding are also available for families. Medicaid Home and Community

Based Service Waivers are available through many states’ Medicaid health care programs. Medicaid

waivers, such as Utah Community Supports Waiver, allow funding for home or community based

services including supervised living and minor home modifications. These modifications can include

door and window locks but all modifications must be approved by a committee. Families using

Vivint’s technologies would have to qualify for waiver funding on an individual basis.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) are both federal

government financial assistance programs administered by the Social Security Administration. These

two forms of funding are dependent on the age of the affected person, the family’s monthly salary

and the parents’ social security benefits and are qualified on an individual basis. Further research by

individual families is required to ensure qualifications, but these two programs could help some

families in Utah afford Vivint’s home automation technologies.

The Federal Justice Department has also recently announced they will now provide funding for GPS

tracking devices (i.e. bracelets) for autistic children so they can be found more quickly when they

run away or wander. Funding will be applied through grants requested by local police departments

but specific details of this funding have not yet been released by the federal government.

The Utah State Senate is beginning public hearings on Senate Bill 57 which would require state-

regulated health plans to cover $36,000 worth of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for

children under the age of nine, then up to $18,000 worth of ABA therapy for children through the age

of 17 years old. If this bill passes it could alleviate some of the financial burden of affected families,

helping them to afford Vivint’s services.

Other than these government funding programs specifically for individual families, no government

funding initiatives have been found for funding programs or businesses that seek to better the lives

of families with an autistic member.

Autism Support from Other Organizations

Aside from autism organizations and government programs there are many businesses that have partnered with autism research and development. The following companies are current partners of Autism Speaks: Toys R’ Us, Build A Bear, Panera Bread, Zales Corporation, FedEx and The Home Depot. Some of the corporations that are already involved with the autistic community might be helpful to partner with.

Toys R Us is Autism Speaks’ largest corporate sponsor, having raised the organization more than $16 million since 2007. Toys R Us and Kids R Us stores across the nation hold fundraising campaigns every April (in honor of Autism Awareness Month) for Autism Speaks.

Build-A-Bear has been quite involved with Autism Speaks and from 2005-2013 had raised more than $545,000 through its donation program for the organization. In 2013 Build-A-Bear launched a special bear to support Autism Speaks in honor of Autism Awareness Month in which $1 from each of these bears purchased went to Autism Speaks. A special shirt for the bear also puts forth 50 cents for the organization as well. During Autism Awareness Month customers could also make an additional donation of $1 or more to Autism Speaks through Build-A-Bear.

Although they are an inactive partner now, for several years Panera Bread sponsored Autism Speaks by selling various “autism awareness items” during the month of April. Blueberry bagels, puzzle

piece-shaped cookies (Autism Speaks’ logo) and blue autism bracelets were among some of the items various Panera Bread stores sold to benefit autism research and programs through Autism Speaks.

Zales Corporation began a new jewelry collection called Shared Hearts a few years ago which dedicates its designs and large portion of sales to benefit autism awareness. For each of the pieces sold Zales donates $5-$10 to Autism Speaks.

FedEx offers its expertise to autism awareness by offering Autism Speaks a reduced cost for its 100-Day Kit and Asperger’s Syndrome/High Functioning Autism Kit (a free kit from Autism Speaks that helps newly diagnosed families understand and deal with the start of having an autistic family member).

The Home Depot also contributes each year to Autism Speaks by selling “Light It Up Blue”

incandescent blue light bulbs through the month of April. These specially made blue bulbs helped

Autism Speaks raise $170,000, plus receiving an additional $915,000 donation from The Home Depot.

Community Support Factors

With such a high number of people diagnosed with autism, there is a large autism community with many helpful resources for these people and their families. Some of the larger, national groups include: Autism Speaks, AWAARE, National Autism Association, The Autism Society and the Autism Research Institute. State-associated groups include: Autism Council of Utah, Utah Autism Coalition and the Utah Autism Foundation. All of the groups and associations offer advice, counsel, help, tips, stories of hope and encouragement, helpful products and links to other useful websites and information on the web.

There are a number of support groups for the autism community via social media as well, including

the Southern Utah Autism group, Autism Moms Support Group and the Utah Easy to Love- Support

Group on Facebook. Cafemom offers an Autism/Asperger’s/PDD Group and Autism Web is a message

board where parents can vent, celebrate and ask questions regarding autism. Users of these and

other forums could prove excellent and important gatekeepers and intervening publics for Vivint.

Opposition

There is some potential of people being opposed to Vivint advertising its technologies as being an aid

to families with autistic children. Perhaps there will be some users who will encounter problems with

their autistic child while using Vivint’s products (bolting from the house or other things) who will say

the technology failed to protect their child as promised, made the family too overly-confident, or a

myriad of other accusations against Vivint. These things, while not highly likely, should be noted and

planned for accordingly.

Resources

There are many nonfinancial resources available to Vivint including organizations associated with

autism, current customer testimonials and celebrity endorsements.

The first greatest resource you have is your manpower. Vivint Gives Back had nearly 4,725 employees

volunteer over 23,000 hours to help families in 2012. The employees are willing to help volunteer for

Vivint Gives Back, which could be Vivint’s greatest asset when carrying out this initiative.

A strong potential resource is the Autism Council of Utah. They could serve as a great resource for

finding potential customers. This council works to provide funding for up to $5,000 to programs,

initiatives and research or projects in Utah that support its mission statement. The Autism Council of

Utah could be a great way of reaching out to those families and providing opportunity for families to

finally have a greater sense of security in their homes. Part of the council’s mission statement is to

provide access to resources for families dealing with autism. They are also willing to collaborate on

special projects in Utah. Partnering with this local organization would show dedication to the cause

and also to the community.

Another great potential resource is Autism Speaks, a national organization who aims to improve

families’ abilities to deal with autism. Various organizations in Utah received grants from Autism

Speaks in 2013 such as The Family Support Center of Southwestern Utah and Hurst Wood Education

Foundation, who used the money for equipment and supportive technology. Organizations like Autism

Speaks would be a great resource to get in contact with various non-profits around the state of Utah.

They would help provide a way, for those applying for grants, to get safety help through home alarm

technology. Big nonprofit organizations like Autism Speaks would provide more exposure for Vivint

and allow you to not only work with individual families but also to cooperate with organizations, care

centers and schools who also work with children with autism and need the security. However, it is

important to consider that while this is a great way to reach families, there is some controversy

within the community about Autism Speaks and the way it runs its organization. This includes

allocating funds, leadership, operating facilities, public statements and advertising.

You should strongly consider using the experiences of current families with Vivint alarms as resources

in your campaign. Their testimonies can provide a solid and trustworthy foundation for potential

customers. In fact, testimonies could single-handedly provide the strongest response from potential

customers. This is because the families with children with autism are continuously looking for a

better way of life. If they can see that other lives have changed from Vivint technology, they will be

the strongest potential customers.

Celebrity endorsements have been a popular way to secure donations and raise awareness about

Autism. Many celebrities have supported research and life-improvement programs and have donated

money to organizations like Autism Speaks. Celebrities such as Chris Daughtry, Conan O’Brien, Jerry

Seinfeld and Kevin James are among some of the most influential celebrities who are currently

working with Autism Speaks and would help resonate with the members of the Utah community. In

the past, you used celebrities to tweet about Vivint Gives Back regarding their favorite charities

during Phase One of their Vivint Gives Back campaign. These voices of strong opinion leaders could

help in raising awareness about home security technology and draw attention to the initiative.

SITUATION ANALYSIS

Vivint has a poor reputation with past and potential customers. This reputation prevents the company from reaching its full potential and being an involved member of the community. By creating this corporate social responsibility campaign, Vivint has the opportunity to help eliminate the negative stigma among its prospective customers. With this CSR campaign, Vivint has a unique opportunity to provide Utah families with security and peace of mind for their children with autism. Utah is an excellent market for this product, as Utah has the second highest percentage of autism in the nation with 1 in 47 children being affected by the disorder compared to 1 in 68 (as of 2010) children nationally. Autism is also a well-known disorder which has received a lot of coverage both medically and in the media. This coverage provides many resources for Vivint and many companies with which it can partner.

Our team has identified several prospective difficulties to overcome. One issue is the price of

Vivint’s services versus what customers are willing to pay. A focus group of test customers felt they

cannot afford the additional cost for this “convenience.” Also, the price for Vivint’s services could

cause potential customers to see this campaign as a money-making endeavor as opposed to a CSR

campaign, further increasing Vivint’s poor reputation. However, we are designing this campaign

assuming Vivint will find a sustainable price point for these families. In addition, there is a fear that

overconfidence in the product will yield to accidents, further leading to negative associations with

Vivint.

Campaign Theme (“Big Idea”)

Our big idea is based on Vivint’s current program “Vivint Gives

Back”. This versatile yet direct message conveys a uniquely

specific message to each public. For example, to families with

autistic children “Vivint Gives More time, peace, security,

confidence and hope.” To outreach programs “Vivint Gives

More resources, opportunity, support and success,” etc.

Each public will see Vivint Gives More and think of what that

specifically means to them thus giving us the ability to target a

plethora of publics while contributing to the reputation and

success of Vivint Gives Back.

Autism outreach programs will be contacted to get them on our side to: 1. Post info about Vivint

services on their websites and 2. Partner with Vivint for the Autism Awareness Festival event. Four

district Special Ed directors will be contacted to get them on our side and pass along an email to

autistic families inviting them to the event. The email could ask them to RSVP back to Vivint so we

could get their contact info. These families would then get a special bracelet that gets them into the

event for free. Vivint will host an event on World Autism Awareness Day to show support for autism.

Entrance is free but there will be a parking fee. At this event, there will be a raffle for ticket

purchasers of shirts, gift cards and even free installation with a Vivint package purchase. Five

systems will be raffled off to autistic families who RSVP’d from the email we sent via the Special Ed

directors (this will be paid for by the proceeds of the festival). Autism outreach programs can come

and set up booths to offer resources to autistic families as well and be a part of our event. This ties

our whole campaign together and we get positive media coverage for our support of autism and our

awesome program.

KEY PUBLICS

Autism Outreach Programs

Outreach programs and organizations such as Utah Autism Foundation, Autism Speaks and Autism Council of Utah are dedicated to helping those with autism and their families. They are a necessary key public in helping with this initiative because they not only have the same goal as Vivint Gives Back but already are well connected to autistic families in Utah. Their self-interests include making those families’ lives easier and more fulfilling, as well as providing quality service for their communities. They value families (others and their own), helping others, and the rewarding feelings that come with giving back. They are also interested in additional services and funding that can help support their programs and organizations. These organizations can be reached through interpersonal and direct communication, the Internet, social media, parents of autistic children, opinion leaders of the autism community, family members and peers. Outreach programs will help you achieve objectives one, two and three. Some of the larger, national groups include: Autism Speaks, AWAARE, National Autism Association, The Autism Society and the Autism Research Institute. State-associated groups include: Autism Council of Utah, Utah Autism Coalition and the Utah Autism Foundation.

Primary Message 1

Vivint loves to give back to the community and with your help Vivint can give more - more time, confidence, assurance, peace of mind and resources to families affected by autism.

Secondary Message 1: At Vivint, we specialize in home security and home automation technology. We have come to realize that our technologies aren’t just for keeping families safe from break-ins, floods and fires -- our products can be used to effectively help keep children safe within the home.

Secondary Message 2: Over several months of testing our product with families of autistic children, we began to see how these families have benefitted from using our technology. Test families revealed that our technology helped minimize dangerous behaviors of their autistic child, allowed parents to unobtrusively monitor their children from a different area of the house and prevent children from exiting the house without permission. Secondary Message 3: Test families greatly praised many of Vivint’s home automation features. “My son gets into cupboards and drawers…I’ve had to call poison control numerous times. Now with the cupboard alarms and the drawer alarms, I can be right on top of him, or at least closer than I ever was before.” Safety features such as these allowed some test families to greatly reduce some of their extreme safety measures such as double door locks and expressed gratitude that their homes were no longer “reverse fortresses.”

Secondary Message 4: Test families revealed their autistic children simply do not understand the need for safety and they would give anything to have “an extra head-start” in keeping their autistic child safe. This system is that extra head-start that families affected by autism need.

Secondary Message 5: Vivint’s home automation system include door, window, drawer and cabinet alarms, electronic door and window locks, and video cameras for interior and exterior use to monitor children from any area in the house. All of these features can be monitored and accessed physically or from a different location via a smartphone, laptop or tablet. Secondary Message 6: All of these things help Vivint give more time, peace of mind and safety to families affected by autism. Some test families even said this home automation system could help save their child’s life, which is why one father said “[We] would shout it to the world to have it in their homes.”

Special Education Directors

There are 41 school districts in Utah and another 100 private academies and schools. There are

special education directors for every district. We will be reaching out to four districts: Salt Lake City,

Canyons, Alpine and Provo school districts. These four school districts are along the Wasatch front

and reach different areas of Utah. These four districts are known to have great special education

programs, as well as teachers who are opinion leaders to parents. Special education teachers are

very dedicated to their students and do all that they can to help the families and the students fulfill

their potential and see success in their lives. These teachers are necessary to be reached if this

campaign is to succeed. They are not only an essential channel to reach parents of autistic children,

but also are opinion leaders regarding autism and working with autistic children. As they work in the

public school sector they are sensitive to corporations and businesses coming into their community to

sell them products. They are busy and driven by love for their students. Anything that would

persuade them to act or be driven otherwise would lead to a catastrophic relationship with the

corporation that caused this change. Special education teachers and directors know each other and

are a close community, they share similar values regardless of location.

The Directors of these four districts are Dr. Randy Schelble - Salt Lake City, Robin Collett - Canyons,

Kay Clark - Alpine and Morgan Anderson/Dawnne Casey - Provo. These individuals can be reached

education that happen throughout the year and monthly board of education meetings.

Families of Autistic Children

Parents and families of autistic children are going to be our most crucial public. As parents make all of the decisions, have the means of payment and know what is best for their special needs children, they are the key channel through which Vivint can help make a difference. Our goal is to help alleviate the stress and worry associated with caring for children with autism. Parents range from single mothers struggling to make ends meet, to married parents with plenty of resources to help their children. It will be most effective to focus on this public’s common self-interest of providing care for their children, as this group’s demographics are so diverse. The self-interests of parents of autistic children are as follows: to increase the safety of their autistic child, to have more peace of mind in their day-to-day life, to increase normalcy in their own life as a parent, to help their child be happy and more independent, to save money wherever possible, and to help other parents who have autistic children. Parents of autistic children can be reached through the following channels: autism outreach groups, parents of other autistic children, opinion leaders of the autism community, family members, peers, and schools. Utah has the second highest rate of children with autism in the nation with 1 in 47. Therefore, there is a larger target audience in Utah than most anywhere else. Furthermore, parents of autistic children spend a significantly larger amount of money on care than parents of children without autism. In 2005, the average annual medical costs for Medicaid-enrolled children with an autism disorder were $10,709 per child, which was about six times higher than costs for children without an autism disorder ($1,812). These parents need affordable and effective ways to care for their children, including affordable ways to keep them safe at home. Families of autistic children is the target audience for this product, thus fulfilling the first objective. This public will also directly influence neighbors through word of mouth, improving our reputation and fulfilling the third objective.

At Vivint, we are reaching out to Special Education Directors to make you aware of the autism

outreach home security system we are offering to families who have special needs children. This

program would allow families to obtain the security system at a subsidized price and would help to

keep their children safer within their own homes as well as bring peace of mind to parents. Utah has

the highest number of children with autism out of any state, and in our effort to reach the families

Vivint launches ‘Safety First’ to aid in protecting Provo residents New program helps assist families in protection of autistic children

PROVO, Utah – Aug. 1, 2014 –Vivint launched its newest Vivint Gives Back initiative called

“Vivint Gives More” on Monday morning with the hopes of improving the lives of some of

Utah’s residents through their innovative home automation technology.

The idea behind the project stemmed from stronger Vivint technology and a philanthropic

purpose. By providing an extra blanket of security in the home, Vivint technology can now assist

Utah families who have an autistic family member. The main goal is to help provide more for the

family whether that be time, security, normalcy or even hope. The automated home systems

include the right combination of security services to add protection to the home for the safety

purposes of the autistic family member and at a discounted cost.

“This program is close to the hearts of all Vivint employees because we all know someone who

has been diagnosed,” Vivint CEO Todd Pederson said. “We started this program because we

have the ability to help assist care takers and we have the means to add that extra layer of

protection in the home.”

With a national average of 1 in 88 children diagnosed with a form of autism, Pederson believes

that Vivint Gives More was an important program to start now that Vivint has the technological

means to help support these families. The program was designed to help assist the families who

always put their children’s safety first in maintaining a safe home.

Vivint worked with many Utah families in the testing of the home alarm systems over a year

prior to today’s release. Through many trials and updates to secure the best security system for

each family, Vivint provides an “extra 30 seconds” to parents of autistic children.

“For the first time since my son was diagnosed, I was able to take a shower for more than 30

seconds,” Jill Stevenson said, one of the first parents with Vivint Gives More. “It’s not life

changing in the sense that I can stop worrying about my son, but I have a larger sense of relief in

my own home.”

VIVINT SPONSORING FESTIVAL IN SUPPORT OF AUTISM

PROVO, Utah — Jan. 20, 2015 — A festival will be held on World Autism Day to raise

awareness of autism in Utah and support local nonprofit organizations. The Autism Awareness

Festival is open to the public and all proceeds will be donated to partnering nonprofits and to

Utah families with autistic children to provided free in-home security systems.

The carnival will have rides, games, food, raffles and giveaways. The event will begin on April

2, 2015 at Thanksgiving Point from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm to kick off the event. The actual

festival will be held the following day, April 3,2015 from noon to 11:00 pm.

Local nonprofits such as Autism Speaks Utah, Autism Council of Utah and the National Autism

Association have all partnered with Vivint to host this event. Resources and literature will be

provided by these programs to educate participants and raise awareness of autism.

“We are really excited about this day where the community can unite to raise awareness of

autism in Utah. Our goal is to have fun while raising awareness about this prevalent issue in

Utah,” said CEO of Vivint Todd Pedersen.

Utah currently has the nation’s second highest autism rate according to the Center for Disease

Control. One in every 47 children has been diagnosed with having an autism spectrum disorder.

This number is significantly higher than the national average of one in 88.

Vivint Gives Back is a nonprofit that was founded in 2008 to alleviate hardship and restore hope

for families in need. Vivint Gives Back has participated in activities from clean up after

Hurricane Ike to providing meals at the Ronald McDonald House to adopting a local elementary

school. Vivint is currently offering a service that allows families with autistic children a low-

price home automation service in hopes to alleviate stress.

Mothers of Angels

Frayed and tired we are the mothers of Angels; four women dedicated to the truth, the whole truth so help me God. We all have at least one child that is loud, sensitive, perfect and autistic; angels in their mortal forms. Even though we love our children more than life itself it is a constant uphill battle to give them what they need…and boy oh boy, do we.

We see things differently than most families and sticking together in order to share it is our purpose. Regardless of how a situation might appear we know better than most the damage a judgmental remark or sharp words can cause… so we leave those outside of this blog. This is a safe place for people with autistic children looking for more support as well as everyone else looking to pry inside of our world.
