PROJECT GOALSThe Cleveland Neighborhood Association partnered

with a team rom the University o Minnesota Landscape

Architecture Department to engage community members

who use Cleveland Park to envision a new park andbecome aware and interested in current neighborhood

    projects.

The goal o this project is to get people thinking about

this park space and show new ideas or the potential o

this public space. The ideas expressed in this booklet

are intended to get people excited about possibilities atCleveland Park.

PROCESS SUMMARYSite Analysis - The rst stage o the process

included studying the current site conditions

to determine opportunities and constraints or

design. Also design precedents and options werecompiled.

Parties in the Park - The second stage o the

process included hosting 3 Parties in the Park.

    These parties showed programming possibilities

or the park, we conducted surveys and interviews

to get peoples opinions about the park andinormation on how the park is generally used.

We also got to know some community members

    and had rereshments.

Concept Designs - Ater the Parties in the Park we

drew up some design options based on eedback

we got during the community engagement

    period.

Community Meeting - We showed community

members the concept designs and had a deeper

    discussion about programming elements and

    design.

Final Schematic Design - A Final SchematicDesign was created based on eedback rom the

    Community Meeting.

    SITE ANALYSIS - VEGETATION

Cleveland Park is vegetated with trees and lawn.

Most o the trees are deciduous, there are a ew

owering trees, shown in pink, and the darker

green trees are evergreens. The size o the treecircle corresponds with the size o the tree. The

most mature trees are over 40 eet tall.

Cleveland Park is smaller than all o the parksin the vicinity. This is the reason why less

programming options are oered here. All o the

parks that oer sporting options have a baseball

diamond. The larger parks that oer indoor

    activities have more year-round usership.

    SITE ANALYSIS - ENTRANCES/CIRCULATION/PARKING

Cleveland Park has one entrance sign between itsel and Lucy

Crat Laney School. Most people enter rom Queen Avenue or

the buslane next to the school. There is no parking on the site,

only street parking on Russell Avenue. Sometimes parking will

overow to the lot at the school.

A heavy row o trees creates a separation rom Penn and

Lowry Avenues and the alleyway and business parking lot.

The possibilities below show a parking option in yellow and

AGE WHAT DO YOU USE AT THE PARK?

The Parties in the Park showed images o park options,

a model o the park with moveable pieces and surveys.

People were asked to write their opinions on the boards

and move around pieces o the model to show how they

would design the park. The exercises were meant toget people thinking about new possibilities and to be

creative. The surveys discovered that the general age

group or the park is between 10-19 and most people use

the basketball courts or the playground, or they come to

    talk to riends.

    17/28

The Parties in the Park and the Community Meeting

were very helpul in determining what people were

interested in seeing at Cleveland Park. People reallyexpressed wanting to see an active and sae park that

is a un place or kids to come and be active while

also providing a place or adults to walk through

with their dogs or have picnics with the amily. Also

the park is described as very cut o rom the resto the neighborhood, almost hidden. There was

    disagreement about exactly what programming

elements should stay or go. For example, some

people wanted to get rid o the baseball eld, others

wanted it to stay, some wanted gardens, othersdid not. Another thought was whether or not to

redesign the park rom scratch or to work within

the existing ramework. Both ideas were presented

and ultimately the nal design is new while working

within the existing ramework. This is mainly orpractical reasons, or example the lccation o existing

water and electrical sources, and because it would be

    more economically easible.

The overall concensus or the park was that thebuilding needed to have updated acilities, someone

on sta, and also the ability to check out items, like

soccer balls, movie equipment or park screenings,

and other play items or the open space. People

also mostly agreed on the ull basketball courts.Mostly people just want a sae and active park.

The nal schematic design presented next has an

active program, tons o new lighting and trees,

more seating, a bike loop and bike path to the

neighborhood, updated play areas that are morechallenging, an amphitheater space and an updated

    BBQ/picnic area.

A nal masterplan would need more participation

rom the community and collaboration with donorsand the park board.
