Since the dawn of time, mankind has been using soothing and analgesicproperties of plants. Still today, about two-thirds of modern pharmacy usesome of their properties. Throughout history, human traditions improved theknowledge and use of medicinal plants: if some practices look strange andmagical, others are well-founded and efficient. In any case, they all have the common objectives of fighting pain and improvingpeople's health.

Introduction aboutPhytotherapy

The Pro's of PhytotherapyDespite the tremendous progress of modern medicine, the use of plants to treatailments has several advantages. Let’s not forget that for ages, people couldjust use plants to get cured, whether it was benign diseases such as cold orcough, or lethal ones like malaria or tuberculosis. Today, treatments using plants are coming back to the fore because somemolecules such as antibiotics are showing their limits as bacteria are gettingresistant to their actions. That is why we now use again Sweet Wormwood(Artemisia annua) and its active ingredient to fight malaria when the protozoaresponsible for the disease are resistant to drugs. We also use Wormwood atNuvoly as an anti-inflammatory. Nature has had millions of years to evolve and plants have found efficient waysto fight diseases and develop useful molecules. Some of those activeingredients are efficient for us and it is a real gift for pharmacopeia to find andcopy the molecule.

Plants to use with cautionPlants are easy to use, but some of them can cause harmful side effects. Likeevery drug, medicinal plants should be used carefully. It is recommended to usea plant only on the advice of a specialist: poorly dosed, Ephedra (Ephedrasinica) is highly toxic and Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) -useful for treatmentof ankle or skin problems- can also be lethal when ingested. However, when used properly and following guidelines, the risk of side effectsis really limited.

The Power of PlantsThe action of plants on human body is no miracle: it is because of the effect ofactive molecules found in plant extracts. Since the XVIIIth century, scientistshave made great efforts to isolate and replicate those molecules that havegreat impact on our ailments. Turbocurarine, the most powerful muscle relaxant, comes from Curare(Chondroâendron tomentosum), and morphine, the most powerful analgesic, istaken from opium plant. Today, plants are more and more used by modern pharmacopeia. It is hard toimagine a world without quinine (taken from plant Cinchona) used againstmalaria, without digoxin (from genus Digitalis) for heart problems, or Ephedrine(from genus Ephedra) used for cold. This is only a few plants widely used inmedicine.

Conclusion about Phytotherapy

The Food and Agriculture Organization estimated in 2002 that over 50,000medicinal plants are used across the world. In modern medicine, around aquarter of the drugs prescribed to patients are derived from medicinal plants, and they are rigorously tested. In other systems of medicine, such as themillennial Chinese Medicine, medicinal plants constitute the majority oftreatments.  At Nuvoly, we want to use the power of Nature and Plants and that is why weconstantly search for new use of Phytotherapy. Our first product, Detox FootPads, uses 6 different proven plants to target different ailments.

How To.... Prepare a Clay Poultice

Mud bath is considered as one of the oldest medical practices. Even today, therapeutic clays are the perfect complement to herbal remedies. White clay (kaolinite) has a rare power; applied directly to a cut or scratch, itquickly stops the bleeding, while sanitizing the wound and helping to heal. Verysoft and soothing, it is also very effective in poultice on sunburn or irritation. As for green clay (montmorillonite), it is known to be an excellent detoxifier! Ithelps the body to get rid of its waste and some pathogenic substances (toxins). It is also able to treat small trauma, but also to clean wounds by neutralizingmicrobes, and help them heal. All this makes clay a very effective poultice on most small pains: bumps, smallwounds, infected pimples, splinters (after being removed)...It can also be used to relieve joint pain (torsion, strain)For optimal efficiency, buy your powdered clays with the quality "ultraventilated" (organic shop, pharmacy)

How To.... Use Essential Oils

Essential oils are subject of a paradoxical situation: on the one hand, they areexperiencing unprecedented success with public and media. On the other handsome toxicologists start to worry about the danger of these highlyconcentrated and very active extracts. But the mistake would be to consider that in terms of toxicity, all essential oilsare equal. Indeed, some are very soft and virtually devoid of any risk: truelavender, ravintsara, tea tree ... Others require stronger precautions for use:tarragon, peppermint, citrus ... And some may be irritating even toxic if they arebadly used: oregano, savory ... Therefore, it is advisable to memorize the basic precautions for use, valid for allessential oils:

Do not use them during pregnancy and breastfeeding, nor in children under5 years (under 10 years for peppermint)Respect doses prescribed in recipes and formulasDo not apply them pure on the skin. True lavender and Tea tree can be usedvery locally and without exceeding 1 to 2 dropsWash your hands after handling themAvoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.Do not treat chronic illness with essential oils without medical advice. As a rule, limit the duration of use: do not take daily the same essential oil formore than 3 weeks. Take a break of at least a week or alternate with anessential oil with neighboring properties.Buy only quality, properly labeled essential oils from a trusted distributor.

Other "pillars" of cooking remedies, edible oils make a good base for dilutingessential oils for massage. They should be organic, or at least virgin oils. Butorganic is better. Olive oil is rather used for deep care (muscles, joints). Sunflower oil is ratherintended for skin care (irritation, dryness). Just add a few drops of essential oil (on average 4 to 8 drops per 10 ml) and mixthem with a finger or the handle of a teaspoon, in a small container. If you have a little mixture left after the treatment, you can keep it at roomtemperature in a jar with lid.

Conclusion AboutPhytotherapy

Imagine that you are a plant... ... With your feet riveted to the ground, you have to face a hostile environment:extreme temperatures (frost, heat wave), solar UV rays, microbes, parasites, pollution, etc. You are not even spared from accidents: the wind that breaksyour branches, the deer that grazes your leaves, and many other attacks.Since you can not go to the pharmacy or bite the neighboring plants, you haveonly one solution: make your own cures yourself! This is how plants produce numerous active substances that allow them to heal, fight against chemical attacks, neutralize microbes and parasites, keep awayharmful insects, resist cold, etc. And by chance we also find these active substances in products derived fromplants (essential oils, macerates). Thus, one can be treated naturally and safelywith Phytotherapy for many ailments.
