ASTHMA FACTS… Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in
the United States. An estimated 24.6 million Americans currently have asthma, including 7.1 million children under the age of 18.
Asthma disproportionately impacts women, children, and the poor.
Asthma can range from relatively mild to quite severe. It is the third leading cause of hospitalizations in children under 15.
Asthma is associated with missed school days, missed workdays, disrupted sleep and symptoms that interfere with physical activity. It can be fatal.
In 2009, asthma accounted for 444,000 hospitalizations and 1.7 million emergency department visits across the country.
An estimated 17.5 million adults (8%) and 7.1 million (9.6) children in America currently have asthma.
What is asthma? Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that involves episodes of tightening of the muscles around the airways in the lungs, swelling of the bronchial tubes (inflammation), and increased mucus production. What can trigger asthma? A variety of factors can trigger an asthma episode or attack, such as viral infections, allergens (like pollen and dust mites), irritants (like second-hand smoke and air pollution), and other factors (such as stress).

What to Know About Your Child’s Asthma
What to Look for Recommendations
Does my child have allergies? Allergic rhinitis — stuffiness, itching of the nose Allergic conjunctivitis — red, itchy, watery eyes Food allergies Atopic dermatitis: red, itchy, dry skin (eczema)
Many children with asthma also have allergies. Asthma symptoms can be triggered by these allergies. See an allergist Take an allergy test
Does my child have Exercise-Induced Asthma (EIA)?
Shortness of breath Wheezing/coughing Chest tightness or pain during exercise Fatigue during exercise
Administer reliever medication right before exercise or vigorous play
Seek immediate medical treatment if your child has worsening symptoms
Does my child have an Asthma Action Plan?
It provides instruction for addressing asthma based on geographic location, determining what medicines should be used, and how to manage an asthma episode
Ask your healthcare provider for one OR
Download a copy and take it to your healthcare provider*
Do you know the different types of asthma medications?
Controller Medications Taken daily can reduce swelling and mucus in
the airways Taken by those diagnosed with persistent asthma Reliever Medications Taken when experiencing asthma symptoms Relaxes muscles around the airway All children with asthma should have this type
of medication
The Asthma Action Plan provided by your child’s healthcare provider will describe the medicines your child needs and when he/she needs to take them
Do you know the child’s triggers and symptoms?
Common Triggers: Smoke, weather changes, cockroaches, food allergies Common Symptoms: Coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, tiredness
Ways to reduce asthma triggers: Do not allow smoking in your home Fix leaky faucets Use a damp cloth to wipe away dust from surfaces Respond to all asthma symptoms seriously because
they differ from one child to the next
