I want to be grateful for all the love and support I get. A great author I have enjoyed through the years is Gary Smalley. I have read his books and have listened to him on Focus on the Family on Christian radio and the last book of his that I read, given to me by my daughter, was The Gift of the Blessing / The Gift of Honor. I picked it up and read sections in both the blessing for the family and then a blessing to the church. Everyone needs a meaningful touch, a word of encouragement, a friendly smile, or an encouragement or willingness to listen to someone in need. It asked, what if we would start a Blessing Bunch to decide to let God speak a word through us and let God increase the numbers to be a church where people could see the reflection of God's love through us in any way He chooses? We already have many who do this, let's increase with intention and consistency . I have put a notebook in the foyer and you can sign up as one of the Blessing Bunch. God Bless you as you do. In His Love and for His Glory! Elsie Ford Calling all softball players! Time to dust off the gear and get those winter muscles in shape! Practices are on Saturday afternoons at Tower View Baptist Church from 2:00pm 4:00pm and begin this Saturday, April 2nd! This will be a time of fun and teamwork as we build on our relationships! The Blessing Bunch  As I was praying through the prayer guide from our bulletin a few weeks ago, I read the question, “What will you be willing to do for God's work to draw people to Himself?”  I want to be a blessing to my church family .

WAY TO GO!! As I write this article we have had just two Sundays in which we have emphasized our Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for our North American Mission Board…AND… so far we have given $2,128 toward our goal of $2600! This is great!!! If you have not yet given toward this special offering, I pray you will give serious, prayerful considera‐tion as to what you can give. All of this offering goes to supporting important ministries such as church planting and disaster relief. As we were recently encouraged: “Let’s see if we can double our goal!” I say we go for it!!

This also brings to mind a question: Being "on mission," what does that mean?  I am afraid that too many times that phrase conjures up visions of young men in white shirts and black pants riding bicycles through our neighborhoods...or per‐haps thinking about astronauts traveling to Mars!  Being on mission for Christians, however, is a specific call.  Now listen carefully...I did say it is a specific call, but I did not say that it was for a specific, limited group of Christians.  Being on mission does not mean that you must be serving with either the IMB (International Mission Board) or NAMB (North American Mission

Board) in our convention.  All of us are to be Christians who are on mission...

And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And be‐hold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:18‐20)

I suspect that many of you may be thinking, ‘OK.  I am pretty sure I knew this already.’  That’s great!  I had a feeling all of us were pretty much aware of this truth.  One thought that challenges me though is this... ‘How many of us might be asking, “But how do I do this?”’  I am so glad we asked that question!  Part of the answer is summed up in the old cliché, we need to bloom where we are planted, meaning that we need not ask God to send us somewhere so that we can fulfill our mis‐sion.  He has placed us exactly where he wants us to be...

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my wit‐nesses in Jerusalem  (Acts 1:8a)

Our ‘Jerusalem’ is where we are planted...Claycomo, and our individual neighborhoods, too. Here is our challenge...are we going to just go through our daily lives and float around spend‐ing all our energy on trivial and temporal things, or are we go‐ing to invest ourselves in living through doing things which have eternal impact?  I am asking all of us to pray, pray, pray.  Ask God to place on our hearts and bring to our minds the specific

ways in which we are best prepared to serve Him.  We have found many ways to live out our Gospel Commis‐sion. Are there more? As we see the developing cultural challenges to living biblically, will we remain diligent and be found faithful? I pray our answer continues to be an always strengthening YES!  By Grace Alone,

Bible Quiz After the Resurrection, two of Jesus’ friends went into the tem-ple in Jerusalem to pray. Before entering the house of worship, they saw a crippled man begging for money from those passing by. Peter had not worked for a while, and his purse was empty.

Nevertheless, he felt sorry for the man and said to him, “I have no silver or gold, but what I have I give you …” (Acts 3:6, nrsv). Peter also spoke one of the lines be-low. What did he say?

A. “Take this bread and eat it.”

B. “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, stand up and walk.”

C. “I can’t offer you healing, but I will pray for you in the

temple.”

The answer is in Acts 3:6 nrsv.

An ancient legend A very old story has the Devil trying to get into heaven by pretending to be the risen Christ. In splendor he arrives at the gate of heaven along with a group of demons dressed as angels of light. The Devil be-gins to shout the words from Psalm 24: “Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in.” Heaven’s true angels answer him in the words of the psalm, “Who is the King of glory?” Boldly, the Devil answers, “I am.” Then he stretched out his arms and the angels saw no wounds in his hands, no wound in his side. The good angels knew an imposter when they saw one. They quickly slammed shut the gates of heaven and the Devil went away in defeat.

Forgiveness The first weekend in March, we took a group of young girls and mothers to a conference in Tan‐Tar‐a called TGE—Trust God in Everything. The theme was Get Real.  They broke the girls down by their age groups and then had breakout sessions for the ladies. One of the breakout sessions that I went to was on forgiveness. Man, did God speak through the leader into my heart!

The definition of forgiveness is ‐‐ the action or process of for‐giving or being forgiven.

It is the process of us laying down our feelings, and others’ obligation to forgive us. We let our pride get in the way; we allow Satan to take over that feeling instead of trusting God to deal with it. I believe one reason that it is hard to forgive is because it is an unselfish act, and, in general, we are a selfish people. We feel justified to lash out when we are hurt, con‐fronted about sin in our lives, or when we have flat out hurt others. When someone hurts us deeply, we hurt, we mourn, and we become angry. Those are all ok to a point. But when

we dwell on it and it slowly starts to fester, that’s when we have allowed it to consume us. My husband will tell you, when I am hurt I tend to shut down and be quiet for a while.

I am sure that all of us have hurt someone or been hurt by others ‐‐ either by words, actions or both.   In Genesis 37:12, it talks about Joseph being sold by his brothers, but then in Genesis 42, his brothers come to him for their survival. This is just one example of many in the Bible in which people chose to forgive instead of hanging on to the hurt. He was justified to order them away and not help them but he didn’t, he reached out his hand and provided for their needs.

Here are a few bullet points that I wrote down as they spoke to my heart: ♦ Forgiveness is for the one who has been hurt. When we don’t forgive, we allow Satan to separate us

from the will of God. ♦ We can’t rely on our emotions to forgive but rely on God’s promises when we do. ♦ We can’t expect quick results. ♦ This is not an occasional attitude but something we need to do daily.  ♦ Every morning we should start out light and go to bed light. Giving our burdens every day to God and

allow God to carry them. ♦ Understand that we can’t always put a band aid on our heart. ♦ Do I trust God enough to let God judge and deal with that person?

As I pondered over these points, I got to thinking about Jesus and his final days. If anyone had the right to hold on to the hard feelings, it would be Him! But even as He took His last breath, He said in Luke 23:34a, “Father, forgive them, they do not know what they are doing.” I will be totally honest—I’m not sure I could have done what Jesus did. I struggle with people accusing me of things that I have no power over, for‐giving gossip and unfair allegations, lies that are told, losing relationships, family and so many other things. I struggle with letting go!  I want them to feel the pain that I am feeling and I want them to acknowledge it.

God has been showing me the past few weeks that my relationship with Him is hindered when I can’t forgive. I watched my Grandma hold on to bitterness and resentment for over 70 years and saw the damage it did to her family and herself. I don’t want my life to be wasted with bitterness and hurt. I want to be able to laugh and enjoy what time I have here on earth.

To be very real and honest here‐‐‐I think being a pastor’s wife is one of the hardest jobs that I have had so far!  It is so hard hearing people talk about you, your husband or family. It is hard listening to people gripe about the time that we get done with ser‐vices. Scott studies hard all week to bring God’s word and to teach us, Jamie and Becky work hard at selecting music that takes us deeper into worship. People get mad, voice their opinions, leave the church, and get oth‐ers to take sides or spread lies/gossip. If this is how we behave in church life, then what is the lost person go‐

ing to think when they visit our church? I know that I am not perfect and that God isn’t finished with me yet (Praise God!) and neither is He finished with other church goers. But even through these tough things, God is reminding me that He will deal with His people and I am not to let Satan attack my mind and heart. I am to turn it over to Him and forgive! And that happens when we spend more and more time in His word and asking what He wants in our lives. As I said above—I’M SO THANKFUL HE ISN’T FINISHED WITH ME!

Continue to seek forgiveness, first from God, and then from others. Teach your children and grandchildren that this is what God wants us to do and that it draws us closer to Him!

CBC Senior Singles Meeting this month!

This month’s meeting is at noon on  April 21st

@ Pizza Ranch N. Oak & Vivion.

Car pool will leave the church @ 11:30 so if you need a ride, someone will more than likely have room for you!

Regular meetings are the 3rd Thursday of the month at 12:00 noon from February through October.

Mirth upon the earth On April 1, you may well have a joke or two played on you. If so,

enjoy the moment. Laugh, even if the joke is on you.

Christians have great cause for laughter on a daily basis. We can laugh because we know that no

matter how much tragedy we see or may suffer personally, we have the assurance that God can turn it all around and bring great good

out of evil.

The proof of that, for Christians, is Jesus’ resurrection.

Suffer no fools ~ Sometimes-controversial preacher Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) once re-ceived a letter containing two words: “April Fool.”

Immediately, Beecher wrote to a New York newspaper, describing the missive. “I have received many a letter where a man forgot to sign his name,” he wrote. “This is the first time I ever knew of a writer signing his name and forgetting to write a letter.”

If someone were to describe our church, I think it’s very likely that it would contain statements like “The peo‐ple are friendly, warm, and welcoming” and “They tell the truth from Scripture in their services” and “They do great work with children.”  I’m pretty sure no one would look at those statements and find fault with them at all. But is that enough?

1 Thessalonians 5 says “For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. Therefore encourage one an‐other and build one another up, just as you are doing. We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and ad‐monish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Relationships have been on my mind a great deal of late and I passionately feel like we are heading toward a place in our world that is going to require us to invest more deeply in each other’s lives to be able to stand firm and face the challenges ahead. When we were in Arizona recently we spent a couple of days with my best friend of 25 years and his family and it reminded me how precious relationships are in our lives when they are deep and rooted in God. Sure, if you were to read a transcript of the visit you would read plenty about whiffle ball, ping pong, Star Wars, Saturday Night Live, politics, baseball, Legos, and a whole host of inside jokes. But throughout it you would also read about life and death,

grace and mercy, racism, parenting, illness, depression, theology, God‐ordained plans, and the joy of serving the Lord. I don’t think every relationship looks exactly like the one we have (it’s probably best for the world if there isn’t more than one that looks like ours!), but I do firmly believe that God designed us to desire rela‐tionships with depth. One of our favorite verses in high school comes from the book of Proverbs:

Proverbs 27:17 ‐ As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

I want to encourage everyone to think about your relationships in the body of Christ. More importantly I would encourage you to be intentional about deepen‐ing those relationships. When we are hurting, we need to not put up a façade. When we see someone mired in struggles we need to reach out to them and en‐courage or help them. If someone asks what’s new, be intentional about sharing what is new spiritually as well as what you would normally share. Let’s seek to be the iron that others can be sharpened by and let’s seek to be sharpened by others. A sharp blade is far more effective than a dull one and much more capa‐ble of fulfilling its purpose. I hope that if someone is asked to characterize our

church in the future that all of the comments above would still be true, but that they would also include “They always en‐courage each another and build each other up in the Word of God.”

In Christ Alone, Jamie

GGENERATIONENERATION 412 412

We Will Miss You!!! Church Family, Four years ago on March 4th, 2012 the Lord placed my family and I exactly where he wanted us and called me here to be your Youth Pastor. During these four years, my family and I have built relationships that I take full confidence in, will remain for a lifetime. The times I had with all the adult volunteers, students, their families, and many of you, are absolutely priceless and will be missed dearly! From the sweat-soaked costumes from leading VBS music, having to pull over the rental van as we pulled into KC from a mystery road-trip to clean up vomit off the interior, the negative temperature snow-tubing trips, the competitive spirit from a friendly game of whiffle ball in my backyard, playing an innocent version of the newlywed game at a Valentine banquet, seeing stu-dents be a gospel light as missionaries in Oklahoma, KC and in St. Louis, or the hundreds of others that you might think of, they will all be missed! Thank you to all you parents who have allowed me to be a part of your child’s life. I feel that I have learned as much from them (if not more) as they have learned from me. CBC is an incredible church that loves Christ and others amazingly well and it has been an honor to minister alongside the people here. Please join our family in prayer as we seek what the Lord has for us next! You shall all remain in our hearts, as well as our prayers, as you seek the Lord’s direction to find the next man He already has picked out to serve your students and families. I love you all!!! In His Service, Travis A word from Sarah……. The last four years at Claycomo Baptist Church have been an amazing adventure serving alongside my husband in the youth ministry. It has been a privilege to work alongside each adult that sacrificed their time to serve. It takes a dedicated team effort to make sure each youth event goes smoothly. Youth events are more than just having fun. To me, a youth event is teaching and showing students God’s Love. God’s Love is shown through the laughter, tears, and many conversations we have at youth events. God’s Love is shown through building re-lationships and really getting to know one another. As we are saying Goodbye to a wonderful church family, I would like to leave you with a challenge. I challenge each of you to bring community back to Claycomo Baptist Church!! Do not let the people sitting next to you in the pew just be someone you sit by every week. I chal-lenge you to get to know one another. Know who they are, what they enjoy doing, and what challenges they are facing every day. Make them your family! Invite them to lunch, coffee, or to your home. Love them as God would love them. We will miss each and every one of you, but the exciting thing is that the relation-ships we have built will last a lifetime, not just while we are attending the same church. Please pray for our fam-ily as we seek what the Lord has for us next. We are praying and will continue to pray for each of you.

In Christ, Sarah Shay Remember to: Mark your calendars for April 17th for the opportunity to support G412 Youth in their an-nual Spaghetti Dinner fundraising efforts for summer missions. The meal will be served concluding morning ser-vice downstairs in the fellowship hall. Please donate as the Spirit leads your heart to give!

We are still looking for a cook for the St. Louis project for the week of July 8-15. Contact Pastor Scott if interested.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Pastor Scott at [email protected] 9

VBS is fast approaching!! This year we decided as a team to go with

Answers in Genesis—Ocean Commotion! We are diving into Noah’s flood.  Here are a few hints to think about:

On the back bulletin board in the next few weeks we will have up the supplies that we will need for the crafts. As in the past, when you take a note, we ask that you return the items as soon as you can WITH the note on or in the bag. If you have questions about crafts supplies, please see Tracy Nelson or Cheryl Hylton.

I wanted to share one of the devotions that I hope speaks to you as much as it did to me.

As we start this year's VBS we will be teaching our kids to stand for God, obey God, trust God, thank God and fear God, just as Noah did 4,300 years ago. All characteristics that we want to instill in our children, right? But if we are not careful as we teach good character qualities, we can easily fall into the trap of moralism. Moral‐ism is the idea that we can achieve righteousness or right living apart from the gospel.

We teach moralism when we say, "Noah took a stand for God, and you should, too!”  While that's true that Noah stood for God in the face of unrelenting wickedness, he did not do it on his own power. Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord (Gen 6:8). He walked with God (Gen 6:9) He knew that God was the one saving him from the coming judgment and, by faith in God, he willingly re‐sponded to God's call on his life (Hebrews 11:7) Noah's stand for God was grounded in his faith in God.

Think about it this way: So what if we teach kids to stand for God? If we teach them to stand for God apart from the gospel, they are as much in danger of the fires of hell as the child that mocks God. If we

teach kids to obey Gods com‐mandments (be kind, tell the truth, obey your parents, stay sexually pure until marriage) apart from the gospel, they are as much in danger of eternal separation from God’s goodness as the homosexuals who outright defy God’s com‐mands. If we teach them to thank God but don't hold out the ultimate reason we give thanks‐‐that we've been rescued from eternal wrath of God on our sins‐‐we bring them no closer to the kingdom of heaven than the ingrates who refuse to acknowledge God even exists.

We don't want to encourage kids to change themselves‐‐to take a stand in their own power just because some guy did thousands of years ago. Being good, standing for God‐‐moralism‐‐doesn't save anybody. After all, it wasn't for the righteous that Jesus came; He came for sinners (Luke 5:32). Instead, we need to encourage our children to raise their desper‐ate need for a Savior who will help them stand for Him through the in‐dwelling power of His Holy Spirit.

♦ Do you like mysteries? The ocean is still a big mystery because, so

far, humans have explored less than 5% of the worlds oceans.  ♦ Did you know that the saltiness of the oceans show the world is

just thousands of years old and NOT billions of years old? If the world were really billions of years, like some people claim, there should be much more salt in the ocean than there currently is.

♦ Take a deep breath. Ahhhh!! Did you know most of the oxygen we breathe is made by algae in the ocean?

Signs of inner peace 1. An ability to enjoy each moment. 2. Frequent episodes of appreciation. 3. A loss of interest in judging other people. 4. Frequent attacks of smiling. 5. Accepting the love extended by others. ~ Author unknown found in The Old Apple Tree

As we go through this week, let's look for opportunities to share Noah's life with our kids or grandkids‐how he stood for God, obeyed God, trusted God, thanked God, and feared God‐‐through the lens of his faith in God. Let's point them to the only One who can save us and sanctify us‐‐the only truly moral One who gives us His morality when we can't manufacture any on our own (2 Cor 5:21). Let's reject the idea that morality is our end goal. And let's encourage them to trust wholeheartedly in Jesus and to rely on Him to work out these attributes in us‐‐the only true basis for morality that exists.

Thank you CBC for all your help in praying, donating and working VBS! It truly is a team effort! Looking forward to an‐other amazing VBS!   Rhonda Gordon VBS Director

Say "hello" to the tree  Pastor Kenneth Chafin tells of being in beautiful east Texas one lovely April Sun‐day. Wild flowers, azaleas, redbud and dogwood trees had put on their glorious Spring colors. Yet Dr. Chafin had not taken time to fully absorb the spectacular scene before him.

Basically, he was tired from the previous week which had been stressful. On this first day of the new week, he was mentally preparing himself to preach in a large church and thinking of his schedule to follow.

He and his wife decided to walk to the church along with their 4‐year‐old daughter, Nancy.

Nancy's short little legs made it difficult for her to keep pace with her parents. Furthermore, her attention was captured by the blooming flowers and trees all about her. Her eyes came to focus on one spectacular dogwood tree in particu‐lar. She stopped to study its lovely blossoms. Then she decided the tree needed to be addressed. "Hi, tree!" she said with a friendly smile. Dr. Chafin said that word of acknowledgment to the tree made him ashamed of himself. "I had been in such a hurry to get to church," he later wrote, "that I had missed my

Creator's sermon growing by the sidewalk." Perhaps this Spring we need to not only take time "to smell the roses" but to thank God often for the loveliness of creation. And, if no one is around, we might even say "Hi" to a tree or two.  ~  Adapted from Daily Guideposts
