Jesus describes himself as the true vineand implies that our best and true home is in him and that we are at our best when he lives in us. Well see what some of this means this morning. We all have images in our minds of who Jesus is... maybe from a picture we saw on the wall in grandma's house, from a child's story book, or from a song we used to sing in church. And depending on the era in which we grew up, we might remember the Jesus depicted in the "Jesus" movie of the late 1970's, or the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" or Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ." But who does Jesus say that he is? In the Gospel of John, Jesus gave us seven different pictures of who he is. Jesus said, "I am... the True Vine, the Way, the Bread of Life, the Good Shepherd... I am the Resurrection and the Life." Today we consider Jesus' words, "I am the light of the world."

Classic Worship 8:30, 9:50 & 11:10 a.m.

Where is “home” for you—really home? Where you can truly be yourself and be comfortable. Where you’re accepted and even celebrated. If you know real home, then you also know how it feels to live some place that’s not truly home. That may have been a dorm room while you were in college. A season spent abroad. Something temporary while you were searching for permanent housing. Jesus describes himself as the “true vine” and implies that our best and true home is in him and that we are at our best when he lives in us. We’ll see what some of this means this morning.

We all have images in our minds of who Jesus is... maybe from a picture we saw on the wall in grandma's house, from a child's story book, or from a song we used to sing in church. And depending on the era in which we grew up, we might remember the Jesus depicted in the "Jesus" movie of the late 1970's, or the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" or Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ."

But who does Jesus say that he is? In the Gospel of John, Jesus gave us seven different pictures of who he is. Jesus said, "I am... the True Vine, the Way, the Bread of Life, the Good Shepherd... I am the Resurrection and the Life." Today we consider Jesus' words, "I am the light of the world."

Much of the music in today’s worship features a decidedly jazz-centered flair. The choral anthem, “Jesus, What a Wonderful Child” boasts a foggy history as to whether it is based on an African-American spiritual or was written in the 1950s by a member of the Angelic Gospel Singers. This morning’s arrangement is written in a three-part vocal harmony (soprano, alto, men) rather than the more typical four-part (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) voicing for choral music. The majority of gospel choral music is written in this three-part fashion.

The hymn “Amazing Grace” is among the most familiar texts and tunes in all of Christianity. English clergyman John Newton penned the hymn text to illustrate a sermon on New Year’s Day 1773 based on personal experience growing up without a defined faith, his role in the slave trade, and his conversion. The hymn became closely associated with the 19th century Second Great Awakening in the United States, a moment in which Methodism played a lead role.

This week, consider reading more about the complex life of poet and clergyman John Newton, or explore the historical context of the Second Great Awakening and parallels you might identify with your own faith journey.

We all have images in our minds of who Jesus is... maybe from a picture we saw on the wall in grandma’s house, from a child’s story book, or from a song we used to sing in church. And depending on the era in which we grew up, we might remember the Jesus depicted in the “Jesus” movie of the late 1970’s, or the rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” or Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of Christ.”

But who does Jesus say that he is? In the Gospel of John, Jesus gave us seven different pictures of who he is. Jesus said, “I am... the Light of the World. I am... the Vine, the Way, the Bread of Life, the Good Shepherd. I am… the Resurrection and the Life.” Explore each of these in NewDay Praise Worship & Classic Worship across the weeks of Lent.

A soup and salad luncheon is being planned for Encore Senior Ministry & PUMC friends. Bring your smile

and know your name, address, and phone number! PUMC staff will take care of the rest! You will find smiling easy as Melissa Pearman and others are making pots of soup and salads to whet your appetite after you have your picture taken.

In order to prepare adequately for lunch, please let us know you will come by stopping by the Encore Senior Ministry Desk in the main lobby to register and pay $5 to help defray the costs of this fun gathering. You will be fed delicious food, enjoy good fellowship, and be a part of the 2016 Church Directory!

PUMC invites you to be a part of the Church Directory that has many helpful features, including an online and mobile app option. It's free to participate and the online and digital features are available immediately.

The new directory is simple to use. If you have online availability, register your information via a link at pumc.link/directory. You will then receive an email inviting you to create a free account at www.instantchurchdirectory.com. That account gives you access to upload your own picture and look up information about others in the congregation who are participating.

The directory information is available via computer or mobile device app. After April 1, printed directories will be made available for those who need them.

If you do not have internet access, please contact the church office and they will assist you in the process.

If you have any questions, email Office Manager Brent Miller at [email protected], or call the church office at 317.839.2319. Thank you for being a part of PUMC's new directory!

Foundry, a sma ll g r ou p focusing on the spiritual needs of Young Adults will be meeting in the Wesley Room, south of the Sanctuary at 11:10 a.m.

Everyone is invited to join this small group any Sunday. This Sunday, they will be reading through the book of Ephesians.

Any questions please contact Ken Loudenback at [email protected] or Mary Raver at [email protected].

You are invited to a Lenten Study led by Mike Rohrer on Sundays through March. Study will coordinate with both Classic and NewDay Praise Worship themes. No need to register; simply join the group this morning at 11:10 a.m. in the Koinonia Room, south of the Sanctuary.

An opportunity to serve the children of Plainfield starts February 23, 2016. TnT (Tuesdays and Thursdays) program at Van Buren Elementary School is an after school enrichment program for which PUMC provides transportation. From 5 p.m. - 6 p.m. you can help children get home from the program. Program ends April 14, 2016. If you can drive one or more times, your help will be a blessing. See Ken Loudenback at the table in the Main Lobby today, or contact Ken at [email protected] if you are interested or have any questions.
