C LASS P IANO 2 C OURSE S YLLABUS Course 762, 2.5 credits Teachers: Mr. Paul R. Ketchen & Ms. Kate Bertelli Room: Music Technology Piano Lab, 155 Email: [email protected] & [email protected] Phone: 781.878.5450 I. Course Description This course will provide students with further beginning to intermediate experiences on the keyboard. Taught in the Music Technology Lab, each student will have opportunities to develop performance techniques necessary to perform simple songs on the piano. Successful completion of Piano 1 or prior piano/keyboard skills are needed for this course. Students will expand their working knowledge of selected scales, chord progressions, music reading skills, and expressive characteristics appropriate to the keyboard. Students will also continue to study famous pianists and composers. The students will increase their global awareness through the study of music from other nations and cultures resulting in a mutual respect for diverse societies and customs. Through the duration of the course, the students will develop skills in critical thinking, communication skills, collaboration, creativity and innovation, and contextual learning; and life skills in accountability, adaptability, personal responsibility, personal productivity, people skills, and self-direction. For grade 9–12 students with completion of Piano 1 or instructor consent. II. Materials Each student is responsible to have the following materials daily: 1. Class texts, Alfred’s Basic All-in-One Piano Course – Levels 1& 2 (Replacement cost: $16.00) 2. Optional headphones with 1/8” jack (walkman, portable CD headphones will work) 3. Notebook or folder (will be organized for vocabulary, handouts, and music exercises) 4. PENCIL, never pen. 5. Positive attitude and desire to learn a new skill. III. Expectations Students are in this course by their own choice. Each student is expected to: 1. Be prompt 2. Do not bring food, gum, candy, drinks (zero, zilch, nil, zip!) into the Lab 3. Participate in a positive manner each and every day 4. Be respectful of yourself, your classmates, and the Lab. You will select a keyboard workstation at the beginning of the school year. The keyboard, computer, and any other equipment assigned to you or your station will be inspected frequently for damage; YOU are responsible for your workstation! If you notice something is missing or has been damaged before you start, let the instructor know ASAP so you will not be held responsible for something with which you had no part. Any damage or vandalism that the instructor feels is malicious will be paid for by the student assigned to that workstation. Keep an eye on the Lab and treat it with care! IV. Make-up Work Students may make up work from an excused absence in accordance with school policies. Unexcused absences from class may result in a loss of course credit for that grading period

V. Assessment There will be three primary considerations for grading: Participation, Performance Assessment, and Written Work/Assessment. While not all entering students will be at the same level of musicianship, improvement of individual abilities and performance skills will be measure through: 1. Weekly Performance Evaluation 2. Weekly Theory and Written Assignments 3. Written Theory and Vocabulary Quizzes 4. Practice Journal 5. Daily Participation

VI. Grading

The HHS Marking System will be used for this course. Grades will be calculated as follows: 1. Performance Evaluations 30% 2. Written Tests/Quizzes 30% 3. Practice Journal 10% 4. Daily Participation 30%
