TUESDAY OCTOBER 28 2014 SPORT 37 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA Star’s stay a Gray area PORT Adelaide and star mid- fielder Robbie Gray have agreed on the value of the All- Australian’s signature on a new contract. All that needs to be resolved is the term of his new deal. The Power and Gray’s man- agement are in agreement on how much to pay the 26-year- old Victorian midfielder-for- ward, who this year won the John Cahill Medal as club champion. Port would prefer a three-year contract extension that would take Gray out of next year’s free agency field. Gray is currently on contract to the end of next season – and is prepared to consider a longer term. The long-running talks be- tween Port and Gray’s man- agement will resume in a fortnight. Power football chief Peter Rohde said last night: “We are hopeful we will final- ise a deal in the off-season.” Class acts to help lift tardy Tahs WARATAHS’ faltering NTFL season will get a big injection of class on Sunday when dual Hawthorn premiership player Brent Guerra and former St Kilda defender Stephen Baker make their Top End debuts. Guerra’s 255 games with Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Hawthorn included 21 finals. Baker played 203 games for St Kilda, including the losing 2009 and ’10 grand finals. Tags coach Tim Weather- ald confirmed both players will wear the red and white jump- ers against Southern Districts at Gardens Oval on Sunday and a TIO blockbuster against reigning premier St Marys on Friday week. “They’ll be here for the next couple of games where we’ll probably start Brent across halfback and Stephen up for- ward and on the ball,’’ Weath- erald said. “There’ll be a couple of other good ones up this week as well. Ex-Adelaide Crow Mi- chael Handby and Mitch San- dery, who played at Norwood and South Adelaide.’’ Weatherald knows the 2014-15 NTFL season is getting away from his side after three close losses to Nightcliff, the Tiwi Bombers and Wanderers. Those losses have seen Waratahs plummet from first to sixth despite a healthy per- centage that is better than the fourth and fifth placed sides. “We had a long chat straight after the Wanderers game where I pretty much laid it on the line to the boys that they need to lift and quickly,’’ he said. “Good sides win those close games and we’ve lost three winnable games now which isn’t good enough. “I stressed my disappoint- ment and the fact we have to find a bit more fire in the belly and a bit more spirit within the group, especially with probably two of our biggest games of the year in the next two weeks against Southern Districts and St Marys.’’ Weatherald said that his players’ cruising attitude was one he wanted to get out of their system. “We’ll be working pretty hard on the track this week to rectify that and obviously the addition of some quality play- ers will help,’’ he said. “But we still have to rely on the local boys, they are the players who need to lift and start playing some more con- sistent footy.’’ By GREY MORRIS NTFL Wanderers player Maddison Smith wraps up Waratahs’ Brittany Abel in a tackle Picture: HELEN ORR Wanderers had little reply in goal spree WARATAHS stretched their winning run in NTFL women’s football to four games with an 87-point win over Wanderers at Marrara’s TIO Stadium. The Tigers have expressed interest in throwing the dumped Blues utility, who was set to play for NTFL side Dar- win Buffaloes this season, an AFL lifeline and will interview him at Punt Rd this morning. Brisbane is also considering recruiting Robinson, cut by the Blues last month after the club failed to find a suitor at the trade table. Richmond are keen to bolster their midfield stocks and made a play for Melbourne’s Jack Trengove and St Kilda’s David Armitage during the trade period. The Tigers will use five draft picks on young talent in next month’s national draft but could secure Robinson, 25, for free as a delisted free agent and place him on the rookie list. The delisted free agency win- dow opens on Saturday with Taylor Hunt (Geelong), Jared Petrenko (Adelaide), Sam Blease (Melbourne) and Shaun McKernan (Adelaide) in the mix for a second chance. Robinson would be seen as a risk given his repeated behavioural breaches at the Blues but is a proven contested ball-winner.
