Whitework is an umbrella term which covers a very broad range of individual techniques, each with their own unique history, materials and stitches, linked by the use of neutral thread on a neutral ground. Class 2: Ro Bruhn - AustraliaFabric Art Quilt

I will show you how to adapt and create a layered fabric art quilt from a photo, magazine image or a sketch. We will use a range of fabrics including your scraps, old clothing, hand dyed fabrics, etc. These will be hand stitched down with a variety of simple stitches using a range of threads for colour and texture. I use some of my hand dyed threads, but you can use whatever you have available. I also like to include recycled elements including soft metal, washers, buttons, broken jewellery, electrical resistors, even metal from coffee pods. By the end of the workshop you will have completed sufficient of your quilt to be able to continue on your own after the weekend. The main stitches I use are running stitch, straight stitch and blanket stitch, but you can use whatever stitches you feel work best for you.

Fabric and Mixed Media Wall Hanging - 2 days

In this class we take a photo, a picture from a magazine or a sketch and using our own interpretation, turn it into an art quilt that can be hung on the wall as is, or framed. You can also use my piece and create your own version of it.We start with a plain piece of background fabric, then build up our image with fabric layers. You can leave the edges raw or turn them under, which ever is your preference. These will be hand stitched down (or machined if you prefer, but you will need to bring your machine). I use lots of different threads and beads, buttons and found objects to embellish the piece and bring it to life. This is a fun class that will free you up to be creative, as in all of my workshops there are no rules.

Class 3: Jane Nicholas - AustraliaAmethyst Japanese Butterfly

Class 4: Heather Constantine - AucklandChristmas Crackers or Needle Roll

This goldwork butterfly was inspired by a Japanese family crest, known as a mon. The family crest, badge or emblem has been a Japanese tradition since the eleventh century, when they decorated the costumes and carriages of courtiers. Using goldwork and stumpwork techniques, and a variety of gold and silk threads, gold kid and beads, this small embroidered medallion may be worked on ivory silk or satin or the fabric of your choice. I used a scrap of vintage kimono silk. The finished panel may be framed or mounted into the lid of a box.

Design Size: 10x10cm

Class level: Intermediate/Experienced

Workshop Cost: $200.00

Kit Cost: NZ $58

These hand embroidered Christmas Crackers are worked on 30 – 32 count linen fabric using a variety of counted techniques with a combination of gold thread and beads to enhance the design. A chance to try some new stitches in combination with some favourites. All stitches used will be taught, and full construction details given. Item can be finished as a thread compendium, canvas backpack or even a piece of clothing. Pre-class work involves working the trellis background, and class work will cover all other stitches used, varying between beginner to complicated. Full comprehensive instructions and pattern for both designs are provided in a booklet and ‘Stitch with Me’ DVD.

Why not create work that has no fabric visible, the surface being completely covered with stitch. Traditional surface stitches can be used in non traditional ways to create contemporary pieces of embroidery. Line stitches massed together to create a filling stitch or stitches placed in different directions to make use of the way light falls on the thread, cotton perle is perfect for this. Day 1 will be spent exploring the possibilities of common surface stitches. Day 2 will be the start of a piece of work using the ideas discovered during day 1

Open a window to the world of Friedrich Hundertwasser. In this class use a riot of colour to stitch a wild, quirky landscape. Start with felt embroidery and use simple linear stitches to create a tree or house. Cut out and apply this to coloured canvas then stitch a background that swirls, ebbs and flows around the applique. Canvas and embroidery stitches are mixed in a relaxed free form style where straight lines and accuracy are not required! Students will be shown quick easy ways to colour canvas, make design decisions, and stitches for felt and canvas embroidery. Experienced stitchers will enjoy the freedom of working without a pattern. Start a smaller project and you could finish in the weekend. At the end of class construction of panels, bags and cushions will be demonstrated. Students receive comprehensive notes showing all steps in the project, design ideas and all the stitches.

Class 10: Fiona Mendel - AucklandCornpad Embroidery Cushion

This flower and its surrounding background are created using canvas work in three different ways. The threads are all from the same colour family but are from different companies and have different properties. Couple this with over 20 stitches and 3 sizes of canvas, worked together to create the flower and its background. To finish the piece I have attached my stitching to a petite Yazzii bag so that it may be used as an embroidery kit. You may choose to finish the piece as the bag or as you wish. During the class we will go through all of the stitches and finishing so you may complete your piece at home.

Class 21: Jenny Adin – Christie - EnglandBotanical Studies on Silk Organza

This course is inspired by the beautiful effects and subtly bleached colours resulting from the natural deterioration of textiles over time. Embroidery was often originally worked in strong, vibrant colours, set on firm weighty ground fabrics. However, these colours fade and age to dusky, light bleached hues, and the ground fabrics deteriorate leaving the embroidery skeleton supported on a delicate mesh. As an allied design theme, we will take the exquisite architectural forms which result as plants decay and become fragile skeletal silhouettes. You may choose between two designs: Honesty and Eryngium. Each includes a lovely selection of hand embroidery stitches which form a rich range of strong contrasting textures taken from the fields of crewel work, whitework, raised embroidery and needlelace (eryngium only). Working in wools, silks, metals and linens, the designs will be set on a ground of sheer silk organza, creating the impression of the embroidery being suspended. You may not complete the full design in the two days but will have experienced all techniques, allowing you to complete confidently at home using the very comprehensive illustrated instructions. The Eryngium design is the slightly simpler and quicker of the two to complete. Special box frames to fit the completed designs, with a double internal mount which traps and suspends the work above a backing board, can be pre-ordered.

TUTOR PROFILESJenny Adin-Christie is a freelance professional hand embroiderer and designer, with an innate passi on for creating individual work; for the study/repair of antique embroideries and for inspiring others through her enthusiastic teaching. Jenny is originally from Derbyshire, England and came from a family who greatly valued craftsmanship, therefore learning her love of embroidery from an early age. She trained on the Royal School of Needlework’s intensive Apprenticeship, graduating in 1999 with distinction. Jenny continued to work at the school for a further 10 years as a member of the Studio team and teaching staff, eventually becoming Assistant to the Head of Studio and playing a key role in a broad range of major commissions, (such as working fine embroidered monograms for the front cover of Sir Paul MacCartney’s classical album, Ecce Cor Meum, the Jubilee Woolsack for the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the Jubilee Banner for Buckingham Palace and the curtains and pelmet for the restored Royal Opera House) in the production of new product ranges and in creating individual work including desgning Lenten Altar Frontals for Canterbury Cathedral. Jenny was privileged to play a leading role in the RSN team which created the exquisite applied lace panels for the Royal Wedding Dress, designed by Sarah Burton for the Duchess of Cambridge. Jenny embarked on a freelance career in 2009. She now teaches widely throughout the UK and beyond, including France, USA, Australia and New Zealand. Jenny is now widely recognized as a specialist in the fields of whitework, metal thread and raised embroidery. She runs a professional embroidery studio from her home in Surrey, UK, offering tutoring and commission work. Jenny also designs, develops and sells a unique range of contemporary embroidery kits together with a broad range of specialist tools and materials.

Ro Bruhn is a graphic designer but gave up full time work seven years ago to concentrate on her art and teaching. She has been an artist, in one form or another, all of her life. Ro’s passion is painting in acrylic and pastels, working with fabrics, papers and jewellery. Colour plays a vital role in her work, it’s influence can be seen across all forms of her art. She has exhibited in numerous exhibitions and also sells her work on-line. Her work has also been published in magazines and books. She teaches workshops on a regular basis from her home in Victoria, Australia and across Australia and New Zealand.

Jane Nicholas has been researching and working in the field of embroidery for over twenty years. Specialising in stumpwork and goldwork embroidery, she has written nine books and has contributed widely to journals and magazines on the subject. In 1999 Jane was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to further her studies in stumpwork in the United Kingdom and in 2005 was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM), for her “services to hand embroidery as an artist, teacher and author”. She teaches widely in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States of America and continues to research and develop new techniques - particularly in stumpwork. A separate, but often related, area of her work is as a maker of artists books and boxes.

Heather Constantine has always had a passion for embroidery and in the last 10 years enjoyed furthering her knowledge with designing her own pieces. She trained as a home economics teacher and enjoys teaching people new skills. It gives her a great sense of pleasure to see embroiderers of all levels achieve a completed article. She likes to think her classes are light hearted even though we are producing a counted piece of embroidery.

Fiona Crowther-Aker is crazy about threads, stitching and designing and loves sharing what she does. her mind is always busy with ideas for new projects! She loves taking her son to mountain bike events and sitting at the bottom of the hill in her deck chair, a coffee in the holder and stitching in hand, the sun on the mountains or snow on the hills.

Jo Dixey is a member of Embroiderers and Lacemakers Guild and is a professional embroiderer and stitch artist. She trained at the Royal School of Needlework in the early 1990’s and then continue her studies to gain City and Guild’s Creative Embroidery, parts 1 and 2. Jo has been teaching, working commissions and exhibiting for more than 20 years in New Zealand and overseas.dixeysoul.blogspot.co.nz

Trish Hill has stitched and sewn for many years. Her knowledge of embroidery has broadened since becoming a member of the Coromandel Embroiderers’ Guild. She particularly enjoys counted work and cross stitch.

Sarah Hooker Many years retailing embroidery and patchwork supplies in Wellington gave Sarah the opportunity to explore all fields of contemporary and traditional hand and machine embroidery producing hundreds of samples of stitched work over the years. After selling the business in 2006 and deciding to continue teaching she has had the chance to really think about what she loved. It was teaching surface stitchery and canvas work with an emphasis on students creating their own original work using the simplest stitches creatively.

Sue Lucas loves to stitch. She has been seriously stitching for the last 10 years, and recently began designing her own work. She loves the challenge of exploring ideas - working through design, composition, colour, stitch and materials to bring these ideas out of her imagination so others can see them.

Fiona Mendel has been stitching all her life. Her grandmother stitched beautiful counted thread work, her mother stitches gorgeous three-dimensional work and she loves surface stitchery. She stitches almost everyday – it keeps her sane. And both her daughters also stitch! Win! Win!

Shirley Pygott prefers using traditional techniques and materials in new, innovative ways, and particularly enjoys interpreting New Zealand themes using metal thread, surface stitch and needle lace. She has tutored widely for more than 13 years in New Zealand and on 3 international cruises, and has been the travelling tutor for the NNI region in 2017 and nationally for ANZEG in 2019. Shirley has completed both the ANZEG Diploma of Embroidery and the Diploma of Embroidery Teaching.

Ailie Snow has been working with textiles for more than 30 years now, regularly exhibiting and teaching around New Zealand, and more recently in Australia, Britain and the United States. In her stitched work, which has gained a number of national awards, she combines a wide range of cloth, as well as paper, print, and found objects, to convey an idea or feeling. She is never happier than with a needle in her hand, and some sort of experimental work challenging her to find a new way to communicate. With heaps of enthusiasm and encouragement, Ailie hopes to convey this sense of discovery and enjoyment to everyone in her classes. http://www.ailiesnow.com/
