PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

On Monday the 27th February, Clare Primary and

Clare High School staff participated in a common

Professional Development Day. Garry Costello, retired

Chief Executive Officer and Principal of Mount

Gambier High School, facilitated the day and focused

on how to build a positive and student-centred School

Culture. The strength of working together as “One

Clare Community” is in the continuity of high

expectations, the delivery of learning opportunities and

personalised support for every child and young person

within our wonderful community. We have all

committed to ongoing work that will bring our staff

together to improve the wellbeing, learning outcomes

and lifelong opportunities for every child. This is very

exciting work!

As a key stakeholder in the Mid North Partnership,

Clare High School hosted the Network Learning Group

Launch last Wednesday afternoon. These professional

learning teams allow educators from our Pre-school,

Primary Schools and the High School to work together

in small groups to further develop their knowledge and

skill in education. Examples of the various focus areas

are: Numeracy Improvement, Student Wellbeing,

STEM learning, the Flipped Classroom and the SHINE

program. I hope that you will hear more about their

learning as they progress over the coming year.

A Note from the

Deputy Principal

I can’t believe we are nearly half way through the term already. Where has the time gone?

I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all the students, staff, parents and caregivers who have made my first 5 weeks as Deputy Principal at Clare High School so welcoming. I actually feel like part of the furniture already! This term has been off to such a busy start and the fantastic turn out from the community for our Middle School Parent Evening and Senior School Information Evening provided a fabulous opportunity for me to meet many of you.

For those of you I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting, I hope to do so in the near future.

I am really passionate about student learning and excited to be part of such an amazing and supportive school and wider community over the next 5 years!

Nina Thomas Deputy Principal

UNIFORM UPDATE The Clare High School backpacks are now back in stock – cost is $65.00 The Clare High School fleecy windcheaters are now selling for $20.00 each (down from $40.00) due to a large stock numbers. The old sports tops are selling for $15.00 each – these would be good as a spare for PE lessons. Heather Guthrie Business Manager

2017 Materials & Services charge are now due and payable

If you are eligible for School Card, forms are available from the school (remember that you have to apply each year for school card). School Card applications close on 24 Novem-ber 2017. If you wish to pay by instalments, please see me asap to organise a part payment plan. Heather Guthrie Business Manager

consolidate the way forward in the redevelopment

of the Middle School/STEM facilities. This project

is a major priority for the Government and so once

the final concept is decided then works will begin

immediately. The plan is that a more detailed

building plan is developed with actual costings to

be assigned. The project will involve demolishing

the current ‘old 70’s’ buildings. I have requested

that this take place in the October holidays with

the rebuild occurring in 2018. This will of course

require some reshuffling of classes during this

time but I will work closely with the builders to

minimise the disruption to student learning.

The Clare High School Athletics day is next

Thursday 16th March. This is always a fantastic

opportunity for parents, staff and students to share

the experience and for so many of our students to

participate (more information is further on in this

edition). I look forward to catching you on this day.

Have a great week!

SRC inducon Assembly

Clare High School’s wonderful student leaders were welcomed and inducted at a formal assembly for the whole school on

Friday 10th February.

We were fortunate to have several guest speakers share their leadership experiences with the assembled students. Lea

Hooper, along with several students, recounted their amazing journey to Cambodia late last year, volunteering in schools and

building huts for the locals. Etabez Donato thanked the 2016 SRC for their dona+on which assisted her to improve condi+ons

for locals when she returned to her birth village in Ethiopia over the holidays. It was a moving presenta+on, which really

highlighted how fortunate our students are to receive the opportuni+es that they do.

Ex-student, Bryce Eldredge, returned from Sydney to share his leadership journey and his current des+na+on. He spoke of ‘The

Rural Network’, an ini+a+ve that he and his partner, ex CHS student Ashley Schultz, had begun. He reinforced that leadership is

developed in many situa+ons, and that making the most of opportuni+es presented is a must.

Principal Sharryn Daly, and Heather Lymburn, our Governing Council Chairperson, spoke briefly, as did our Head Prefects,

Travis Kuchel and Etabez Donato. They all reflected upon the importance of student leadership and the ability to make a

difference.

Following the formal presenta+on of our SRC, the students and their parents enjoyed a morning tea supplied by the school. We

congratulate our student leaders, listed below, and look forward to working with them this year.

Year 10s Paying It Forward

As a part of Mrs Mensforth’s Year 10 English class, we have been conducting some research around the Pay It Forward Foundation and what their mission is. We were looking at the foundation with the question of, ‘what can this motion do for us in

the Clare Valley?’ We viewed the Pay It Forward film and now have a sound understanding of the profound impact this could have within our school and wider community. Each student has committed themselves to an act of kindness and we are in the midst of creating a social platform to share our success using the Pay It Forward Foundation’s hashtag of #sharekindness.

Here is some of what the students had to say:

“The Pay It Forward Foundation is about acts of kindness among strangers making a chain effect from one person to the next and onwards. This foundation inspires countless acts of kindness and is made to inspire people from all over the world. It is important for everyone to take part in this foundation to bring kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness into the community and for us all to help each other.”

“It is important to Pay It Forward because our lives would be so much easier and so much more enjoyable if we all just did some good deeds once in a while to make someone else happy and ourselves happy also.”

“The Pay It Forward foundation is a foundation promoting acts of kindness towards others by giving other foundations the resources and funding they need to help communities across the globe. The program inspires people to create the pay it forward reaction. A chain reaction that lightens up the world.”

“The foundation also helps schools like how they help pay for 1,500 books for teachers to use with their students and provided by the Pay It Forward Education Program.”

“The Pay It Forward thing is where one person does three big nice things for three people, then those three people do three things for three other people and so on. I think the Clare Valley Community should participate in the pay it forward motion because there would be a lot of generosity around the Clare region.”

From here we are looking forward to jumping into writing our discussion essays based on the following topics:

• Is it possible for one idea to change the world?

• Could the idea of ‘paying it forward’ actually work?

• Is it worth doing something nice for someone else, with absolutely no expectation of receiving anything in return? What

about if the person wasn’t appreciative? Do we always expect something in return for everything we do?

• Are there any opportunities where we can do good for others, or do we fail to notice them?

As a class, we also encourage you to take on the challenge of paying it forward within our community and spread the vision of the Pay It Forward motion. Mrs Brionie Mensforth

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS.

In term 1 2017, Clare High School will once again hold Parent Teacher Interviews over 2 separate weeks.

We will be holding Senior School interviews (Year 10 - 12) on Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd

March, Week 8 of Term 1, and Middle School interviews (Years 7 – 9) on Tuesday 28th and

Wednesday 29th March, Week 9 of Term 1.

We will continue with our online booking system called Parent Teacher Online.

This system allows you to manage your interview bookings with ease, allows the management of booking

for all of your children who attend CHS and more efficiently than a paper trail. Information regarding

placing bookings will be released via email and to students via hard-copy over the next few days.

If Clare High School does not have your current email address, please contact Lynda Johnson at CHS

reception via phone (08 8842 2788) or email [email protected] to update your email

information and receive your log in details efficiently.

Thank you,

Matt Linn

The Order of Operaons

Brackets, Exponent, Division, Mulplicaon, Addion and Subtracon

• Always remember that for :

• Division and Mul plica on work out which ever comes

first in the expression working from le to right.

• Addi on and Subtrac on work out which ever comes first

in the expression working from le to right.

Look at the following expression:

2 + 3 x 6 = ?

Is the answer 30 or 20? It’s 20…… because if you follow the order the

mul+plica+on comes before the addi+on, so this is what you do:

1. 3 x 6 = 18

2. 2 + 18 = 20

How about this one:

20 - 6 x 2 + (3 x 2)

The answer is : 12

The Acvity Space – A4er School Program

Would your family benefit from an aMer school program designed for teenagers and pre-teens with a disability?

At SA Country Carers, we are con+nually striving to find ways to further support those caring for their loved ones who are

living with disability. AMer consulta+on with a number of carers, we believe that a tailored aMer school program – The Ac+vity

Space (TAS) could do just that.

Maybe you would like the opportunity to work more than you are currently able, maybe you would like to par+cipate more in

your community, or have the +me to spend with friends. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could do all of this whilst feeling confident

that your child is being well supported by qualified staff to enjoy a wide range of recrea+onal and skill-building ac+vi+es.

Our vision for TAS is that it would be tailored to each of the par+cipants. There would be high staff to child ra+os ensuring

each par+cipant receives the highest quality of care and the required support to enable them to par+cipate in ac+vi+es. We

will focus on providing a posi+ve, fun and sensory friendly environment that promotes con+nual growth of independence,

social and self-help skills. Transport from local schools to TAS would be provided by SA Country Carers.

Par+cipa+on in TAS would be funded by your child’s NDIS plan at the relevant group rates or clients without NDIS funding

may pay a ‘fee for service’. Feel free to contact us for more informa+on about this.

Our respite team are currently gathering informa+on on how best we can support your aMer school care needs. If the TAS

program is something you think you may u+lise, please contact us for an Expression of Interest form by phoning Laura on

1300 686 405.

to playing your team sport in the morning, then

joining the umpires panel in the afternoon.

If you are interested please register interest

with Ms Katie Liebelt.
