Clapham Community Shop Steering GroupFollowing the overwhelming backing of the community, the Steering Group has begun to look into the feasibility of the village store becoming a community-owned and run business. However, Terry had to make the difficult decision to close the shop on 24 May, despite last-minute efforts initiated by a villager to rally support. We wish Terry well for the future and for his other business interests. As a newly-formed voluntary group we are not in a position to immediately step in and take on the shop, but we will be continuing with the feasibility study, once we have reviewed what we now need to do and the timetable for doing it. An immediate task is to liaise with the Post Office about the possibility of a temporary ‘outreach facility’ being set up in the village. The Steering Group comprises Nick Burton, John Dawson, Diane Elphinstone, James Innerdale, Wendy Jennings, Eddie Leggett, Sue Mann, Esther Pugh, Denise Wilson and me. We’ll keep you informed through the village newsletter and other means but if you’d like to be added to an emailing list please email Wendy on [email protected]. Don Gamble (Chair)

June 15th – Trinity Sunday is a tough challenge facing the preacher. For the worshipper in Church, it can be bewildering. Puzzle over the abstruse language of the creed: ‘Begotten, not made’, ‘Being of One substance’. Hymns such as ‘Three in One’ and ‘One in Three’ can also be difficult to understand. Maybe today we need a revitalized mode of envisaging the Trinity. A good starting point is Moses some 3500 years ago. He did not discover God in a theological assertion, but in a spontaneously burning and unconsumed bush. Hidden in this is a powerful Trinitarion image that speaks now. God the Father is the fire, the incandescent centre of all that is. Christ is the light flowing out from the crackling thorn bush, engulfing the world’s darkness. The Holy Spirit can be discerned in the smoke hovering mercifully over the universe. The punch lies in God’s words to Moses: ‘Put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground’. The essence of God the Trinity is not a linguistic formula, but holiness. This opens the gate to a tranformative spirit-uality. Home is in the world, search for the pearls of holiness there, and you will find God. The poet and priest, Gerald Manley Hopkins, sums it up inimitably: ‘The world is changed with the grandeurs of God. It will flame out, like shining from shook foil’. This sets us off on a thrilling and often surprising pilgrimage, a journey during which we are constantly on the look-out for the Holy One. So all becomes grist for the spiritual mill, for the uncovering of the Trinity in landscape, people, tragedy, joy, despair, the unfolding of each day, and the vast sweep of nature. It may not be all plain sailing – like the gold-panner in the remote hills, there may be days, months even, when all we find is sour dust and hard bleak rock. There seems to be no joy, no hope in the world. Persevere, and one morning we might unearth a nugget of gold and come face to face with the Eternal, as Moses did. We can go a step further and transpose all this into prayer. As the hymn-writer, David Evans, put it, drawing on Psalm 37 v.7: ‘Be still for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One is here …. Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around’. This is truly soul-shaking – a conscious moving into that place of silence, where the holiness of God the Trinity pulsates, enfolds, and leaves us breathless with wonder. Words become superfluous, we simply rest in that warming fire, and come away renewed and inspired,
with a flame of sacred love burning in our hearts. So shrug off linguistic conundrums on Trinity Sunday. Search for the burning bush in every moment of life, sacred and secular. Make prayer on entry into the shimmering presence of the Holy One. Then Trinitytide will truly become a time of revelation and glory. God bless you all Ian.

Parish Council ReportThe Parish Council met on 22nd April and 27th May. The May elections have brought some new faces to the parish council: Diane Elphinstone and Ann Sheridan join Colin Price, John Dawson, Gerald Kay and Paul Bratt. The new Members were warmly welcomed at the annual meeting of the parish council where Cllrs Price and Dawson were re-elected as Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively. Car parking is becoming a growing area of concern for residents in the village especially on weekends and bank holidays when there is an increase in visitor numbers. The parish council is exploring ways to encourage motorists to use the National Park car park. It is also supporting District Councillor Carl Lis’ proposal that a section of the car park be made available to local people free of charge. The council is fully supportive of Clapham Community Shop Steering Group’s investigations to determine the feasibility of running the village shop as a community enterprise. Due to the recent shop closure, the Group is reviewing the work that has to be carried out and the timescale in which it needs to be done. A temporary Post Office outreach facility is being investigated. The recent survey of broadband speeds has led to the formation of the Clapham Superfast Broadband Association, a small group of residents who would like to improve broadband speed in the area. The majority of Clapham will be able to receive superfast broadband by the end of this year but more rural properties in the parish will not benefit. With the support of the parish council, the Group will be conducting a door to door survey in Keasden to gain a more accurate picture of the speeds available to individual properties and to discuss ways in which it could be improved. The council is pleased that the new classroom at Clapham School has been installed and that the schoolchildren now have a modern, safe environment in which to learn. Residents may have noticed that the war memorial in St James’ church yard has been cleaned and the lettering restored. This work was carried to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of Work War I. The right of electors to inspect the annual accounts of the parish council for 2013-14 ends on the 6th June. If you wish to do this, please make an appointment with the Clerk. If you have spotted any potholes or flooding issues then you can contact the Clerk or email the Highways Department directly on [email protected]

It’s been great seeing the playpark being so well used and obviously appreciated by children and their parents as the weather’s improved over the last couple of months. We are keeping the play equipment in good condition and maintaining the playpark but to further enhance this community space we’d like to replace the old wooden shelter. Despite our best efforts the shelter is looking very shabby and we are now planning to replace it with a new one. To help raise funds we organised the ‘house-to-house flea market’ on Saturday, 24th May. More than 30 stalls were dotted around the village, selling unwanted toys, clothes, bric-a-brac, books, and loads more besides. The event was Tracy’s idea and as it was the first time we have run it, we think it was a great success. When all of the money is in we’re expecting to have raised around £400 for the replacement shelter, so a big thank you to everyone who took part or helped. As well as one-off costs to replace dilapidated equipment we also have annual costs such as insurance to cover, and we are very grateful for the income generated through sales of David Crutchley’s excellent calendar, collections and raffles at the Bunkbarn, collections at the Village Shop, and contributions made to the donation box in the playpark. All members are committed to keeping the park a credit to the village and we put a lot of effort into maintenance and fundraising, so we are always happy
Clapham Playpark and ‘house-to-house flea market’to welcome new members willing to help. If you would like to help in some way please contact Don on 51775. We will soon be putting up our marquee for the summer. The marquee (roughly 5 x 10m and 3.5m at its highest point) can be used informally but it can also be booked for a private party or event in the playpark, in return for a donation of £30 for private parties and £50 for organisations. If you are interested please contact Eddie on 51030. Finally, a polite reminder that dogs are not allowed in the playpark (apart from guide dogs), so that it remains a safe and hygienic place for our children to play in.

From M6At Junction 36 (from north) take A65 to Skipton. From south, at Junction 34 take A683 to Kirkby Lonsdale, then A687 to Ingleton and A65. On entering Ingleton, turn left at the Masons Arms, signposted B6255 to Hawes. Go straight over one set of cross roads, and when beginning to climb up out of Ingleton, there is a signpost to Clapham to the right along the Old Road, and Cycle Route 68. Take this road and travel 2.3 miles approximately, and Crooklands is on the right hand side.
From Skipton A65Take the turning to Clapham. The road will take you past the New Inn Hotel on the right hand side as you enter the village. Follow the road over the bridge and past The Village Store on the right. Take the second turning on the right – Cross Haw Lane, signposted to the Village Hall. Continue straight on out of the village up the hill, and Crooklands is the first house on the left about ¼ mile after you pass the road to Newby, i.e. about 1½ miles from The Village Store.
Sat NavsSome Sat Navs will direct you via Newby village – this is steep and narrow. If unavoidable, turn off the A65 at the Little Chef & come up through the village with the green on your left, to a T-junction with the hamlet of Newby Cote opposite. Turn left. After ¼ mile there will be two barns, one on each side of the road. Crooklands is immediately after, on the left.

Clapham Community Fruit and Vegetable StallNEW ARRANgEmENTS!

In the Clapham Community Orchard group we’ve been reflecting. We’ve thought about what our Food-share Stall has hopefully given to those who have come to it . . . the chance to share the fresh goodness of home-grown fruit and vegetables – and a visible reminder of Clapham’s practical commitment to sustainability. And we’ve thought about what the stall has given us as we sit behind it: lovely sharing of enthusiasms, pride in selling community-grown potatoes and honey from community bees, constant evidence – if we ever needed it – of Clapham’s generosity and friendliness, and, it has to be added – plenty of rain water dripping down the back of the neck. All good, (apart from the rain water), but, we decided, time to try something different: something simpler that would keep going the all-important sharing of lovely local food that might otherwise go to waste, but which would not have to ask for Saturday time and energy from a range of people. So – we are down-sizing to a box: a bring-to and take-from box which, (thanks to Sue Latimer), you will find up against the boundary wall of her Bunkhouse/Reading Room. Everything in it will be FREE! It will be there every Saturday from July 5th onwards, (Street Fair Day, July 26th excepted), until further notice, from 10am until 6pm, (with a local, charity-of-the-month donation tin, should you want to leave a small contribution). And thinking of the donations you have so generously already given us for our Orchard project, we will continue to use the money to fund planting in our allotment patch of fruit and vegetables that will go into the box. So please – if you grow more than you need, don’t bin it, box it!

Animal Rescue FundraiserOnce again we are hosting a fundraising event in Clapham Village Hall on Sunday, 13th July. The event will run from10am to 3pm with charity stalls, raffle and tombola. Home made refreshments will be served throughout the day. On the day there will be five animal charities represented, including Bentham Pet Rescue, Craven Cats Rescue and the Dogs Trust. We are very excited this year to be joined by Keighley Monkey sanctuary who will be bringing with them two of their monkey residents for you to meet. So why not come along and meet the monkeys and enjoy morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea and cake? This will help us to raise much needed funds to support the wonderful work these organisations do in rescuing, rehabilitating and if possible rehoming the ever increasing number of unwanted or abandoned pets. We hope to see you there.

Clapham goes Scandinavian If you heard some rather lovely music or saw unusual musical instruments around the village during the first weekend in May, that would have been Scandimoot; our first time in Clapham, though we have been bringing the music and dance we love to this area for many years. We’d like to thank you for the warm welcome you gave us and for the help in so many ways that made our stay a delight. We were very pleased that some villagers were able to come to the short concert in the church on Sunday where Josefina Paulson played the nyckelharpa and sang, or to drop in to our social evening on Sunday in the village hall. If you missed it, Ken Pearce has some photographs.
