Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Friends of the College, Easter Message At World Youth Day 2016, Pope Francis reminded the young people gathered that being a disciple demanded that they “trade in the sofa for a pair of walking shoes and to set out on new and uncharted paths.” We are called to lace up our ‘walking shoes,’ and be active witnesses to our faith by loving like Christ in both word and action. Easter reminds us of the challenge of being able ‘ To Love Like Christ’ in genuine ways. Students were given opportunities to demonstrate love for others in several ways leading up to Easter. Project Compassion was well supported with over $5,500 raised by students, staff and families. Another opportunity was provided to Year 9 and 10 students on Holy Thursday by assisting with the Holy Spirit Primary Reflection Day (see photo above) and the Catholic Life Team, led by Ms Nolan, put on a beautiful Easter Liturgy on Holy Thursday which many students participated in. Mother’s Day Mass On Wednesday 9 May, we will be celebrating a very special Mass in our new College Hall. This Mass will celebrate all of our mothers and grandmothers, both living and those that are not with us. Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Friends of the College,

Easter Message At World Youth Day 2016, Pope Francis reminded the young people gathered that being a disciple demanded that they “trade in the sofa for a pair of walking shoes and to set out on new and uncharted paths.” We are called to lace up our ‘walking shoes,’ and be active witnesses to our faith by loving like Christ in both word and action. Easter reminds us of the challenge of being able ‘To Love Like Christ’ in genuine ways.

Mr Forrester’s official farewell Due to Mr Forrester’s appointment as Acting Principal at All Saints Catholic Senior College so late in the year, he was not able to be farewelled by the student body until last week’s College Assembly, which Mr Forrester was able to attend. Our College Captains, Perla and Aaron, took the opportunity to speak on behalf of the College community and present Mr Forrester with a gift. Below is an excerpt from the address: “Mr Forrester, on behalf of all 2016 and 2017 Clancy students, past and present, we also want to thank you for the great care and respect you have shown each and every one of us. Thank you for your smiles and hellos as we walked around the playground; thank you for the respect and dignity that you demonstrated each day; thank you for encouraging us and supporting us in our multitude of endeavours; and thank you for your guidance and wisdom…”

Building Update It appears that the Hall and Gallery will be handed over to the College during the upcoming school holidays which will allow us to hold the Anzac Day Ceremony (Tuesday 1 May) in the Hall as a practicer for the Mother’s Day Mass on Wednesday 9 May. This is great news for the College as it has become increasingly difficult with the growing school population to host events outside in the playground. The Theatre, Music Rooms, Change Rooms and Dance Theatre are scheduled to be completed on 1 June.

Congratulations Phillip Gigliotti who received a Clancy Gold Award and Medallion at last week’s College Assembly. Mr David Fetterplace Principal

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL April Holidays Term 1 concludes on Friday 13 April. It has been a busy and successful term and I would like to thank staff, students and parents for their contribution to the College community. I wish all our families a safe and happy holiday period.

Staff Development Day - Term 2, Week 1 The College is holding a Staff Development Day on Monday 30 April. This is the first day of Term 2. Parents should have received communication for this through email. The purpose of this day is to assist teachers in the implementation of new syllabuses from NESA (NSW Educational Standards Authority) for Stage 6 courses, as well as TAS and PDHPE. As teachers will be taking part in workshops there will be no formal classes for students on this day. School will resume in Term 2 for students on Tuesday 1 May (Sports Uniform). Please be reminded in Terms 2 and 3 students are required to wear their full winter uniform.

Mobile Phones at Clancy The College Mobile Phone Policy has been reviewed. One main purpose of this is to encourage students to engage socially with friends and take the opportunity to disconnect with social media. Whilst we understand the necessity of phones due to safety and arrangement of transport, there needs to be a level of responsibility in the use of mobile phones at school. To avoid the misuse of phones, which are becoming a distraction to learning, the following guidelines have been updated:

Phones should be switched off, and kept out of sight between the hours of 8:30am and 2.55pm (2.30pm on Tuesday) unless permission is provided by a member of staff. It is not acceptable to use these devices at recess or lunch, nor between lessons.

Individual classroom teachers have the right to control when and how students use mobile phones and other devices in their classrooms.

Page 3: CLANCY CATHOLIC COLLEGE€¦ · College Captains, Perla and Aaron, ... School will resume in Term 2 for students on Tuesday 1 May (Sports Uniform). ... 24 students from Year 9 and

Students must behave in an ethical manner when using mobile phones and other devices, as per the Student Acceptable Use of Technology Agreement.

Students are fully responsible for the security of their devices at all times. Clancy Catholic College accepts no responsibility for students whose devices are lost, stolen or damaged. This also applies to any organised off-site school events.

Headphones should only be used in class with the teacher’s permission.

When a student is attending examinations during scheduled examination blocks, mobile phones and other devices which provide an internet connection must not be brought into the exam room.

Students should not independently contact parents/carers about an illness, incident etc. Communication with parents/ carers must go through the appropriate College staff.

Students should never use mobile phones or devices whilst on camps, retreats, excursions etc without expressed permission from the Year Coordinator or supervising teacher.

We have also asked students to refrain from contacting parents directly if they are sick. If a student is sick or upset they need to inform a teacher so we can deal with the situation appropriately and ensure the child is properly cared for. Parents will then be contacted. The Mobile Phone Policy can be found on the College website. Ms Laura Gant Acting Assistant Principal

FROM THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR Easter On Holy Thursday, 29 March, our College community gathered for the Stations of the Cross Liturgy. Led by Year 10 and 11 Evangelisation students, the moving liturgy recalled the moments leading to Jesus’ death, his crucifixion and being placed in the tomb. Students were guided through each station, reflecting on what it means for us as followers of Christ today. Inspired by our College’s charism and our 2018 Scriptural theme, students were challenged to consider how they live out their faith, showing God’s love to others, through the way that they speak and behave, particularly during this Year of Youth. Twenty four Year 9 and 10 Newman students spent Holy Thursday with Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School, Carnes Hill. They guided the primary students through various activities, related to the events of Holy Week, preparing them for the Easter Triduum. Thank you Mr Ghignone and the students involved for their work and enthusiasm. On Tuesday, the College community participated in prayer, celebrating the Resurrection of Christ. As we continue throughout this important season, may we strive to live out our Easter faith, being people of love in all that we say and do.

Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School Spirituality Day

On Thursday 29 March, 24 students from Year 9 and 10 Newman classes had the opportunity to travel to Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School, Carnes Hill for their Spirituality Day. We broke up into small groups and workshopped various themes with the different grades from Kinder to Year 6.

The first session was Kindergarten to Year 2. During this time we worked with each class on topics relating to Holy Week, which consisted of Palm Sunday, the washing of the feet and the Last Supper. We were fortunate to teach the students in a fun way that helped them to gain knowledge about Holy Week by showing them videos, creating palms and involving them in a meditation.

The second session was with Years 3 - 6. This session was more mature for the older years, with an insightful meditation and Visio Divina (an ancient way of praying with art). They also rehearsed and participated in a re-enactment of the Stations of the Cross which was a fun and creative way for the grades to come together in reverence whilst enjoying themselves.

Overall this day was fun for all of us helpers and the students of Holy Spirit. Thank you to the Holy Spirit staff as well as Mrs Nolan and Mr Ghignone for helping to plan and coordinate the day. It was a great way for the Newman classes to engage with the wider community.

The coming of Easter signals the end of the Lenten Season and the time that Christians are called to place special emphasis on almsgiving. As always, the Clancy community has actively engaged in Project Compassion, helping to create a just future for many communities in Australia and around the world. Thanks to the efforts of students and staff at the College, we have raised approximately $5,500 to support Caritas Project Compassion as well as the Charitable Works Fund of the Archdiocese of Australia. Well done Clancy!

FROM THE WELLBEING COORDINATOR The end of term is almost upon us and being an eleven-week term, the chance of burnout over the next week is relatively high, for both students and parents. With thanks to Generation Next, here is an article to help us understand burnout and hopefully how to prevent it. Research on burnout in adults and children shows that there is a correlation between the level of stress that parents feel at work and the level of stress that their kids feel at school. Of particular importance is the fact that the highest correlation can be found between mothers and their teenage daughters. Stress and anxiety over money seems to be predictive of the highest levels of burnout. It seems that feeling burned out can actually run in the family. Our high, uncontrolled stress levels that result in us feeling burned out are detrimental to our kids because we act as their role models. They are constantly watching what we say, what we do and how we cope with stress. One of the concerning qualities about today's generation of adolescence is that they are now the most stressed-out generation - which means they're likely to become burned out adults. One of the factors that contribute to that staggering statement is that they have poor coping skills. However, it can be said that parents or carers have poor coping skills in dealing with the tremendous stress that we now live with on a daily basis. In kids, there are certain behaviours that may be signs that they are burned out:

Loss of energy and interest for things they used to care about

Anxiety rears its head socially and in school

They say, "'I don't care" a lot

Reduced personal accomplishment

More easily distracted than usual

When we are running around from place to place often late while eating and driving, texting and talking on the phone, we send a message to our kids that life is chaotic. When we are stressed, we can't really be present. This means that if our kids have something they want to talk to us about, we aren't available to listen to them. When we overschedule our work and social lives we are likely to overschedule their school, sporting, and social lives, too. Some kids today say they don't have time to hang out with friends because they are ‘too busy’. Our kids need to be saved from the unachievable standards of perfection that are being placed on them. And parents need to be freed from their own unachievable standards of parenting perfection. Here are three important things you can do today to stop the cycle of burnout:

Be sure there is an end in sight. One of the factors correlated to burnout is that the stress is chronic and won't ever stop. Be sure once your child does a project or plays on a sports team that there is an obvious break. This way they experience stressful things as having a start and end point.

Insist on self-care and downtime for your child. Make sure that they have time to do the things they

love to do in a non-competitive way and that there is time in their schedule every week for boredom. Yes, that time that is needed in order to be creative, innovative and relaxed. By the way, competing in Minecraft or other games for hours on end is not effective down time (see next).

Reduce multimedia exposure time. This includes phone, iPads, television and computer time. The

level of stimulation that kids receive on a daily basis overloads their developing brains. Taking tech breaks reduces stress hormones flowing into their bodies and increases relaxation.

These tips apply to parents, too. It is best if you make it a family affair that everyone makes an effort to practice self-care, reduce stress, and know the signs of chronic stress in an effort to prevent family burnout.

FROM THE PASTORAL CARE COORDINATOR On Friday 16 March, Australian schools were united in their communities to celebrate the eighth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA). Clancy Catholic College registered for this day with many other schools to take a stand against Bullying. At Clancy, we recognised this day by viewing a clip called safe schools alert - bullying and launching a new method to report bullying and disrespectful behaviour that students may encounter.

Students can now report disrespectful behaviour by clicking on the ‘Disrespect Reporting’ link through Sentral’s Student Portal. This link is not meant to replace students seeing teachers directly however, it is another way that students can communicate to teachers and Year Coordinators on behaviour that is disrespectful and causing concern. This link will directly alert staff at the College to bullying issues and appropriate action will be taken to support students and deal with the issue. This link from Bullying no Way also provides some practical suggestions for students and parents on what to do about bullying. Bullying is NEVER ok!

Does screen time have a measurable impact on the brain? And if it does, how much do we need to cut down in order to maintain a healthy relationship with our devices? Link
