A counterclaim is…• any position that contradicts the thesis– Bad: Some disagree that Eddie is a complex character.

– Good: One literary theorist, Renee Kathleen, finds that Soto’s protagonist Eddie is a flat character, even though he makes several key decisions which would otherwise indicate that he is, in fact, round.• This good counterclaim provides a window into the “turn against”

and references the “turn back.”
