Local 4-H Club has great success

The Three River Ranchers club of the Frederick/Westport area had great success at the Brown County Fair held in Aberdeen from August 10-16 this year. The club grew by eight members this last year, which is a pretty impressive gain in membership for

any club in rural South Dakota. That growth made the Three Rivers club the winner of the annual “Night at the Fair” award sponsored by the Brown County Fair Board. The winning club, based on percentage of growth, received carnival tickets, coupons for free corn dogs, ice cream and pop compliments of the Fair

As school begins, I am very excited about meeting all the students and parents, along with working with all the great people at Frederick Area. There is something about starting a new journey that can invigorate

a person. This is my first year at Frederick and I am eager to learn everything I can while doing my best to keep the school a wonderful place.

Working as the school counselor I will be teaching character lessons to the younger students and covering a lot of ground with career and college readiness for the older students. As we learn about the six-pillars of character we will practice cooperating with others and enhancing the environment for learning. The upperclassman will gain a better understanding of what they may want to pursue as a career, along with what career fits their interests

and skillset. Also, I will provide college information and ACT preparatory activities for students who want to continue their education.

I look forward to working together with everyone in Frederick as we work toward the same goal; providing the best opportunities for the students to succeed and facilitating the best environment for learning.

We all want to get off to a good start this year and I, with some researching, found that creating a routine can be one of the best ways to help. Routines help kids develop a sense of security and self-discipline while also helping to use our time at home more

productively. Here are a few tips that:

Build routines around when each family member gets up, eats breakfast, and has to leave the house.

Plan for the next day the night before: bags packed, sports stuff ready, school clothes laid out, etc. School age kids can help with all these things!

Have everyone contribute to the plan – when someone has a say in his or her plan, it will be much easier for everyone to stick to it!

I am grateful to be a part of the community and look forward to a great year!

The school year is off and running. It is great to see everyone back and excited about all of the changes at the school! I have to thank the wonderful staff we have here as the opening of school went smoothly. Our ICU program has started and as of right now, all students have completed all assignments. This is a motto and project we are excited to continue throughout the year!

As usual, part of the first day was dedicated to making homecoming plans. Homecoming will run September 27-Oct. 2nd. Coronation will be held on Sunday, September 27th at 7:00 in the Frederick School gym. Dress days include: Monday— Pajama Day, Tuesday—Staff Member Day, Wednesday—Class Color Day, Thursday—

Thrift Shop Day, and Friday—Spirit Day.

The Homecoming Parade will start at 1:00pm with the theme being “Around the World.” If you know of a group that is interested in participating in the parade, please contact the school office at 329-2145. The football game against Ipswich starts at 7:00pm.

I look forward to seeing you all at various events and celebrating all of our Titans in their successes!

The clock has continued to tick. By the time you read this article the students will have been back in school for two weeks. Veteran staff will be back in the groove of another school year, setting their pace, and hitting their stride.

Hopefully, the students and new staff (including self) will have learned and adjusted during this transition period and are set for smooth sailing. As the father of three sons, it is my experience that parents and families are grateful for the regular schedule that schools provide for their children. This continuity of scheduling is all part of the process that students go through in an effort to prepare for their training in becoming responsible young adults who are ready for the “daily grind” of the American work force.

Being a parent is a difficult job and our ever-changing world adds to the difficulty. However, the FASD Mission Statement points us in a direction to make improvements: “Dedicated to a Quality Education for All Students.” With that said the grade 7-12 staff will be implementing a new program to help parents help their children to prepare for their future.

Let me repeat that – “to help

parents help their children to prepare for their future.” School and home work are a student’s job. Being responsible in these areas again prepares them for the rigors of a daily paid job in the future. The ICU program will give parents another tool to help them guide their children to becoming responsible adults.

ICU programs have been started all over the country in the last number of years and have proven to be very successful. Research has shown that the success of the program is dependent on how well the parents support this program.

As with any parental decision, expectations, follow through, and consistency help us as parents to become positive role models for our children. Let’s all encourage our children to work hard, do our best, and have fun in an effort to enjoy an exciting year!

“The best part of being the Frederick Community Store manager has been getting to know everyone in a relaxing atmosphere in a position that wasn’t high stress.” Those were the words of Jim Ulmer, retiring store manager. On Saturday, August 28, the Community Store Board of Directors hosted an open house retirement reception allowing patrons of the Store the opportunity to wish him well.

Right off the bat, Ulmer intends to do nothing... until he gets bored. When working six days a week from 7:00 am – 6:00 pm for 12 years straight, there hasn’t been time to do absolutely nothing. It won’t take long before that novelty will wear off he suspects and then he will likely do some bowling and perhaps next summer take up golf again. He also hopes to spend more time with his three sons and their families living in Fargo, Wichita, and Hawaii. He is a grandfather to five grandchildren ranging from

ages four months to six years.

When asked what he’ll miss most, Ulmer laughs and says, “Having something to do and, oh yeah, the paychecks each month.” More seriously, he adds, “Of course I’ll miss the people I’m used to seeing every day.”

Store board president Lonny Mikkonen had this to say about Jim’s service, “We appreciate Jim’s commitment and dedication to the store. He has been very committed all these years. I don’t think he called in sick one day in 12 years and put in long days, six days a week, taking few vacations.”

Jim also is appreciative. He wanted to say, “Thank you to everyone for putting up with me all these years and supporting the store.”

Be well Jim, and thank you.

Starting her educational career in Frederick, Breanna Helland was noted for her academic excellence and year-round involvement in extra-curricular activities. She was a consistent honor student and 2011 Ms. Titan award winner. These experiences helped her as she continued her journey, which led her to the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD. As a 2015 USD Criminal Justice and Political Science graduate with a Spanish minor, Breanna was awarded as one of three USD Fulbright Scholarship winners.

Breanna is continuing her journey currently in Seoul, South Korea teaching English to national Koreans. One of the criteria of a Fulbright Scholar is to have “sufficient proficiency in written and spoken

language.” Breanna is exercising that ability now as she writes a weekly blog which she started July 6. Catch up on the six weeks of Breanna’s adventure by logging into her blog at https://breannahelland.wordpress.com. She is doing a great job of sharing her story and the mystique of this far eastern culture through words and pictures. You may correspond electronically with Breanna by using Facebook at the bottom of her blog.

After her Fulbright adventure, Breanna’s future goals are to inspire and help others through public service. Breanna’s parents are Randy and Lisa Bretsch of rural Frederick.

As Dr. Suess wrote, “Oh the places you will go!” May this article inspire other FASD students to reach for the stars as they work hard and dedicate themselves to their studies, relationships, and activities!

Board. Brown County had sixty-one new members in 2015 for a total of 325 members.

Kristi Forsting, one of the Three River Ranchers 4-H leaders said, “It’s so fun to see the excitement and energy of new members in their first year. This year that excitement was multiplied for our group with so many new 4-Hers.”

Another exciting event at the fair had a couple Frederick High School seniors reigning as royalty at the Fair. MiKayla Forsting from Three River

Ranchers and Jonathon Sumption, from the Friendly Fellows and Daisies 4-H club of Claremont were crowned 4-H King and Queen at the Brown County Fair. Biographies of all candidates were in the Aberdeen News.

4-H livestock winners included sisters Michaela Podoll who won Reserve Champion in the Senior Sheep Showman division and Brooklyn Podoll who won Grand Champion in the Junior Sheep Showman division. Grand Champion winners in each division, including Brooklyn, earn the

right to participate in the Round Robin Contest where participants answer questions and show for judges 14 different ag livestock. Other livestock winners were Laura Sumption who won Reserve Champion Prospect Calf and MiKayla Forsting who won Reserve Champion Commercial Market Swine.

There were a number of purple ribbons earned by club members as well for different 4-H projects. Linda Huettl, another Three River Ranchers 4-H Leader said, “We are very proud of the accomplishments

and the projects that our club members had this year. The members did very well on their static exhibits and hopefully everyone had a chance to see them in the 4-H area in the Odde Ice Arena.”

If you’d like more information or are interested in joining the local Three River Ranchers 4-H club, you can do so by contacting Kristi Forsting at 605-885-7001 or Linda Huettl at 605-226-1525. October is National 4-H Month, so join the club and celebrate.

Frequent visitors to Frederick probably can't help but notice some big changes to the Frederick Area Historical Society Building in recent months. The changes aren't complete and more money is needed to continue the improvements. Some interesting upcoming events will help to continue renovations.

The first event will be held Sunday, September 13 featuring a traveling display from Pierre called "Homesteading in South Dakota". In addition to the display, five local

families that homesteaded more 100 years ago will share their family story. The family histories will be shared by, Al Geranen, Dale Groop, Ted & Joanne Derry, Heidi Marttila and lastly, Peggy Worthy, talking about the Peterson family. Chicken dinner will beserved starting at noon with a cost of $8.00.

The second event will be held on Sunday, October 4. This fundraiser will be a live auction with a variety of themed baskets, some antiques and Frederick memorabilia. Local favorite, Lyle Podoll will be the auctioneer. In addition,

the organization's members will be serving pie and coffee starting at 2:00 pm.

Both events will be held at the Frederick Area Historical Society Building which also houses the community's Museum. If you're unable to attend, but would like to support the organizations ongoing efforts, donations can be sent to FAHS PO Box 523 Frederick, SD 57441.

The museum is open from 9:00 am - 12:00 noon every Saturday with complimentary coffee and cookies available along with smiles and socializing.

FAHS launches ICU program

Among the several new changes this year, the one affecting the students’ most will be the ICU program. What this program is designed to do is help students in grades 7-12 who have fallen behind in their class, to get back on track. It is a way to keep the students accountable for their homework assignments that they do not turn in. As stated in the handbook each day a student does not turn in an assignment they lose 10% each day and after the 4th day the assignment is worth 0 points. However, with the ICU program the student is still required to

complete the assignment and turn in.

In a nutshell, this program has been implemented to make students more accountable for taking control of their learning and getting their assignments done. With a large population of students being involved in sports and other activities student-athletes will not be allowed to participate in practices or games until their late or missing work has been completed satisfactorily.

Parents were sent a flyer detailing the program at Open House and contact information for when their child goes on to the ICU list.

The excitement of a new school year accompanied by the start of Titan extracurricular, has community members jumping at opportunities to lend a helping hand. Recently volunteers have stepped up to show the football field some tender love and care. Coach Morlock and Jim Dumire worked hard to prepare the grass by spraying weeds, watering, and mowing. While those who donated their time to paint the bleachers, player’s benches, and equipment shed included Julie Van Dover, Bob Bergen, Deb Klapperich, and Knute Reierson. Frederick Area School would like to extend a big thank-you to all of you for offering your time and effort.

Julie Van Dover puts the finishing touches on the announcer’s booth.

The Frederick Area School Open House took place on Thursday, August 5. Overall the event had a good turnout of both students and parents.

Attendees were able to visit with staff members and bring in school supplies to help the first day of school go smoothly. Junior high and high school students were welcomed back by Mrs. Ringgenberg and Mr. Reierson and given information on the school’s

various rules and policies. As a point of emphasis, Mrs.

Ringgenberg thoroughly explained the new ICU policy, which should guarantee student success in completing all homework. It was noted that as parents and teachers cooperate and communicate, the students will all be in a position to complete any unfinished or late homework. Should parents or students have any questions about this new policy and want to discuss how this will benefit their child, they are encouraged to contact Mrs. Ringgenberg at 329-2145.

THE TOWN OF

September 28th marked the return of Titans football as they hosted the 9AA power Herreid/Sebly Wolverines. With the Titans up 14-2 at halftime they came out of the gates hot to start the 2nd half scoring 16 unanswered points with touchdown runs by Jordan Haas and John Vandover.

The Titans would find

themselves down 10 heading into the final quarter where the Wolverines' depth began to show as they pulled away for a 44-18 victory.

Offensively Haas had 13 rushes for 99 yards with a 52 yard touchdown run followed by VanDover with 9 rushes for 55 yards. On the defensive side of the ball Haas led the Titans with 8 solo tackles from his linebacker position including a fumble recovery.

Already, a big story for the boys has been injuries and with a roster of only 26 players health will have a major impact on this year's success. Zach Sumption is currently on a week-to-week basis and expected to be able to return for the Faulkton game as are Stephen Haas, Evan Maurer, Shane Davis, Austin Sumption, and Daniel Ham while Spenser Vetter is still unclear about when he will be able to return to action.
