Our professionally accredited Civil EngineeringBEng Honours degree equips you with coreengineering knowledge and a wide range ofpractical skills for a career in this vital sector.

You'll learn about the infrastructure that underpins ourquality of life, such as:

• water supply and sanitation• transportation• structures

You develop a strong understanding of how society mightaddress global challenges such as climate change, population growth and resource scarcity, and showcaseyour skills in sustainable engineering through designprojects.

Highlights of this degreeQuality and ranking• 2nd in the UK for research power (Research Fortnight)• top 175 – Engineering and Technology category – Times

• top 150 – Civil and Structural Engineering category – QSWorld University Rankings by Subject 2018

Gain an industry-recognised qualification*This degree is professionally accredited by the Joint Boardof Moderators (JBM), which is made up of the following fourprofessional bodies:

• Institution of Civil Engineers• Institution of Structural Engineers• Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation• Institute of Highway Engineers

The JBM works with universities to ensure their degreeprogrammes develop professional engineers who willcontinue to provide a global contribution to sustainable, economic growth and ethical standards.

*All professional accreditations are reviewed regularly bytheir professional body.

Become a chartered engineerBoth our BEng and MEng degrees provide a pathway tobecoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng). This is one ofthe most recognised international engineering qualifications.

Our Master of Engineering (MEng) degrees are a direct routeto becoming chartered. You don’t need to study any morequalifications after your degree to achieve chartered status.

Our BEng degrees can also lead to Chartered Engineerstatus. However, you’ll need to complete further study, likean approved Master’s degree.

Visit the Engineering Council’s website for information aboutthe benefits of becoming chartered.

Enjoy flexibility, variety and specialisationThe size, success and professional expertise at Newcastlemean that we can offer five study themes in civilengineering.

You'll study each theme in different proportions, dependingon which degree you choose, building to a highlyspecialised study programme to prepare you for your futurecareer.

Our study themes are:

• infrastructure• modelling and information systems• surveying engineering• environmental systems• human system demands and impacts

Find out more about what you will study in the CourseDetails section.

Benefit from our industry linksGraduate with the skills employers look for, thanks to theinput of our industry advisory panel into your degreeprogramme.

Network with professional engineers at the regional office ofthe Institution of Civil Engineers. It's hosted here atNewcastle.

Learn from speakers from industry, who we useextensively throughout our degrees to bring theory to life.

Receive support and advice from practising engineers onyour annual team design project. And showcase your workat our annual exhibition.

Observe professional engineers at work through field visitsto live civil engineering sites.

Compete for prizes donated by industry at each Stage.Categories include best overall student performance, bestdesign performance and best project.

Boost your employabilityOur graduates are highly employable.

The most recent data available shows that 100% of our CivilEngineering BEng Honours and MEng Honours graduateswent into employment or further study within six months ofgraduating.

We have fantastic facilities to develop professionalskills you'll need in your career.

Take a virtual tour at www.ncl.ac.uk/tour 3

These include specialist laboratories on campus, whereyou'll test your design decisions and learn how differentmaterials behave. For example:

• testing heavy structures, like reinforced concrete beams• analysing the properties of different materials, like steel

and timber• exploring chemical and biological properties of waters,

soils and more• studying how water behaves in flood or heavy rainfall• testing highway design with our driving simulator

You can find out more about our facilities on the Schoolwebsite.

You will also have access to full-scale field facilities offcampus, including:

• flood defence schemes• instrumented river catchment system• hydro-borehole facility• engineering embankment• electric vehicles

To make sure you get off to a fantastic start, we also giveyou a free start-up pack. This contains essential resourcesfor your studies including key text books and laboratory/sitesafety wear.

Entry Requirements

All candidates are considered on an individual basis.

If your qualifications are not listed here, please see ouradditional entry requirements web pages to find out whichother qualifications are considered.

The entrance requirements below apply to 2019 entry.Entrance requirements during Clearing 2018 may differfrom those outlined below.

Advice on Maths and Science requirementsIf you don’t think you will have the exact Mathematics andScience qualifications referred to in our entry requirementsby the time you need them, you may not be sure what todo.  We hope that the following will help.

• If you already have, or are taking, the A level (orequivalent) Maths and Science qualifications specified inour entry requirements, you should apply for stage 1(First Year) entry of the engineering degree course inwhich you are interested

• If you have a Maths qualification but will not have it at Alevel (or equivalent) when you start your degree, youshould apply for the relevant degree with FoundationYear.  We may give you the opportunity to take theNewcastle University Pre-Entry Maths Course* and theoption to start in First Year if we think that this will be thebest route for you

Take a virtual tour at www.ncl.ac.uk/tour 5

• If you have A level Maths (or equivalent) already but not atthe required grade, you should contact us for advice. We may decide that you could be considered forFoundation Year entry, or it may be that our engineeringcourses are not the best options for you

• If you will not have the equivalent of an A level in theScience subject (if any) required, you should apply for therelevant degree with Foundation Year.

If you are still not sure, do not worry.

Whatever you apply for, our Admissions Tutors will help youdecide which is the best route for you.  They may thereforemake you an offer for a different course (e.g. FoundationYear entry instead of First Year entry) from the one youapply for.

(*The Newcastle University Pre-Entry Maths Course aims toprovide the requisite mathematical skills and conceptsneeded on our engineering degree courses and to preparestudents for the modes of learning they will encounter.  Thematerials for the course are delivered electronically andinclude opportunities to practise your skills.  You study thematerials in your own time and, when you are ready, youbook your exam with the Engineering School to which youhave applied.   A fee of £150 is payable at the time ofbooking the exam or shortly before the date set forexamination.)
