INTRODUCTION:

Ciutadella is situated on the western coast of the island of Menorca (Balearic Islands, Spain).

Ciutadella is a labyrinth of cultures.It was founded by the Punic and has been ruled by Romans, Arabs, Spanish and even English (during the XVIII century)

Ciutadella is the most agricultural and livestock municipal district of the island. Many of the farms base their economy in the production of milk, that is the reason why the majority of the farming land is dedicated to pasture

The traditional activities in the city have been shoe-making and imitation jewellery.

Nowadays, tourism has become the main industry in Ciutadella

The northern coast is a wild and unfriendly landscape, with cliffs and little vegetation, in contrast with the south coast, more pleasant, surrounded by pine trees and white sandy beaches.

Ciutadella has the best beaches in the island

Most of them have “the blue flag”

Given by the European Community to the best beaches in the CEE

Along with these,

the biggest touristic attraction are the virgin beaches.

There are a large quantity of nautical activities in the port, Calan Bosch and the nearby beaches

LITTLE BY LITTLE

It’s a Menorcan expression to explain how to go through life. In Menorca you will find foot paths to be enjoyed with calm.

From coast to coast you will discover secrets corners, old barracks and also country houses.

In 1993 Menorca was declared Biosphere Reserve by Unesco

recognizing the support between nature and mankind.

Ciutadella is an open-air museum where you can discover the old cities and monuments of the talaiotic time (1600-1400 bc)

Molí des Comte

It is one of the few mills that are left in Menorca.

Its activity stopped in 1905 but can be visited in the inside

Ciutadella is a lordly city with old aristocratic palaces

The cathedral was built in the XIII century on top of a Muslim mosque.

Born Square is the army square of the old governor’s palace (today’s Town Hall)

In the middle you can see the Obelisk that commemorates the resistance and posterior capture of the people in Ciutadella by the Turkish in the year1558.

It maintains the look of the old fortified city: old aristocratic palaces, narrow little streets and small houses.

Ciutadella is well known thanks to its incomparable festivity of saint Joan

Horsemen ride throughout the old and narrow streets.

The typical image of the “jaleos” ( the horses jump at the sound of the special music in the middle of a flood of people) has made Ciutadella very famous

The “jocs des pla”, medieval equestrian games are the most popular celebration of the Fiestas

Ses Voltes, with medieval arches, is the most typical street in Ciutadella

We live in a tourist area

consequently we receive students whose parents have emigrated to work or are retired people.

Our mother langue is Catalan, so we have to teach two different official languages:

Catalan and Spanish. And the new students are sometimes socially excluded

or find it difficult to integrate.

DIFFERENT PROGRAMS

ASCE

It is a substitute classroom to high-ranking handicapped pupils. They are not able to share any kind of subject with

other students.

They basically practice manipulative activities.

INTEGRATION

This program works with handicapped students which are able to share part of the contents and

follow general subjects, but they need psychological support, or some help with language,

or therapeutical pedagogy.

SUPPORT

When after the first assessment, we see that some students have difficulties following the same rhythm,

we have a group of teachers who help them explaining, working more slowly in order to achieve the minimum

contents of each lesson.

ALTER

AND

PISE

Sometimes the difficulties our pupils must face, have their origin in a complicated family situation which has an

influence on the development and academic results; it may even include leaving school. In these cases we have two

programs: ALTER and PISE. They are based on workshops activities and we can offer them thanks to

social services and some private companies.

They may learn carpentry. . .

Or painting.

DIVERSIFICATION

This a program for students with just learning difficulties. The contents are adapted to their level and instead of working in subjects, they work in areas of knowledge, so they have less teachers which have more contact with them. At the end of their studies they get the same certificate as the others and

they can even continue their education.
