Biel is the only town in Switzerland in which German and French are spoken side by side in equal

measure. One senses the relaxed mentality here resulting from the mixture of these two languages.

In 2002, Biel was one of the four exhibition locations for EXPO.

Architecturally, Biel is a town of many facets. The modern part of the city with its high-rise buildings

lies at lake level which then gives way, on a slight incline, to the intact old town with its gothic town

church stemming from the 15th century. In 2004, Biel was awarded the Wakker Prize by the Swiss

20th century buildings. Examples can be found in the new town, where uniform districts built in the

‘new construction’ style came into being in the 1920s and ‘30s.

The town of Biel is a tradition-imbued watch metropolis in which this Swiss craft is still fostered.

Swatch, Rolex, Omega, Tissot, Movado and Mikron are all located here. Biel has additionally also

positioned itself in the field of other industries and in communication. Its location makes the town an

attractive gateway to the excursion and holiday region around Lakes Biel, Neuchâtel and Murten –

also known as the “Three Lakes Region” – with vineyards on the hillsides and extensive vegetable

cultivation on the level areas. The options for rambling and cycling excursions are huge. In Ligerz,

the viticulture museum and a wine trail serve to draw visitors. Several attractive mediaeval small

towns like Nidau, Twann, La Neuveville and Erlach are well worth an excursion.

In summer, it is possible to travel on various routes along the lakes onboard scheduled passenger

boats; the day trip through all three peripheral Jura lakes is especially popular. Naturally all types of

water sport are also pursued on the lakes.

From the town on the linguistic divide, it is only a stone’s throw to the lush green, hilly landscape of

the Jura with its broad forests and wonderful vantage points, as well as the sportsperson’s Mecca of

Magglingen above Biel, and the Chasseral (1607m).

Highlights

● Biel old town – an intact old town with a beautiful town hall, gothic town church dating from the

15th century, various fountains and beautiful signposts.

● Centre PasquArt – a very attractive art museum for contemporary sculpture, graphic art and

photography; renovated in 2000 and extended with a new building designed by Basle architects

Diener & Diener.

● Aare trip – a leisurely and romantic river trip from Biel to the most beautiful baroque city in

Switzerland, Solothurn. En route, one floats past the small town of Büren and the Altreu stork

colony.

● Lake Biel and Petersinsel (Peter’s Isle) – the idyllic peninsula on which the renowned

philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau was said to have experienced ‘veritable happiness’ lies at

the western end of the lake. Rousseau’s former residence, a monastery, today houses a

famous hotel-restaurant.

Top Events

● Biel ‘Braderie’ – the largest festival in Biel and the surrounding area: this colourful summer

festival with a market, tombola and concerts has taken place for over 70 years. The origin of the

festival lies in the economic plight of Biel in around 1930 (June).

● Lake Biel Festival – joyous summer’s night festival in Biel with snack stands, bars and a huge

firework display (July).

● Biel ‘Altstadtchilbi’ (old town fair) – 150 shops, market sellers and associations and a diverse

entertainment programme provide for an excellent atmosphere (August).

● Lake Biel vintage festivals – highly traditional vintage festivals such as the Trüelete in Twann,

and the Läsetsunntig in Erlach (September/October).

● International Old Time Jazz Meeting – renowned international festival for traditional jazz in Biel

(November).

● Biel Christmas market – numerous stands and atmospheric Christmas illuminations at the

largest Christmas market of the region (December).

● "Aarberger Puce" – flea and antiquity market, now with 250 dealers: one of the largest and most

atmospheric markets for second-hand articles in Switzerland (April & August).

A perfect day in Biel/Bienne.Switzerland’s only officially bilingual city is known as Biel to German-speakers and Bienne to French-speakers – a linguistic status that makes for a special charm. While the modern city reaches down to the lake, the intact Old Town with its 15th-century Gothic church nudges up against the hillside. As gateway to the Seeland lake region, Biel/Bienne also has plenty to offer active visitors.

08:30Feel-good food at Rüfi’s

For more than 100 years, this bakery has been known for its

delicious rolls. Today, Chez Rüfi serves breakfast from 6.30am,

Monday to Saturday – and everything is market-fresh, natural, and

of outstanding quality.

11:00In the round You couldn’t take sides here if you wanted to: the semi-circular

shape of the Rotonde makes this restaurant the perfect meeting

point for French- and German-speakers alike. Here, all of bilingual

Biel/Bienne comes for a chat, to linger over a drink – or just to

watch the colourful comings and goings on Place Guisan through

the big glass windows.

12:00Gourmet delights in an urban oasis

The “Goût Mieux” quality label is awarded to restaurants that use

organic, regional, fair-trade ingredients wherever possible. The

bistro of the charming Villa Lindenegg is like a gourmet island: in

the heart of the city, yet surrounded by greenery.

14:00To the island Follow the example of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and let yourself

be enchanted by St. Peter’s Island. For an inspiring round trip,

take a boat from Biel/Bienne to the peninsula, continue on foot

through a nature reserve to a historic hotel with garden restaurant

in the lovely inner courtyard (all once part of a monastery), and

then take the famous heath trail to Erlach. From here, you can

catch a boat back to Biel/Bienne.

18:00From the boat to the Lago Lodge

Charming, unfussy, and fun: the bistro of the Lago Lodge, where

you can sip your beer and watch more being brewed at the same

time. Alternatively, simply soak up the sunshine on the terrace, or

try your luck at a game of boules.

19:30From the lake onto your plate

Fish does not come any fresher than this: at the Restaurant du

Lac, what you eat is caught on the doorstep – for example pike

(the speciality of the house, together with perch) from Lake Biel or

Lake Neuchâtel. If you reserve a table on the large terrace, you

are in for a special treat: the lakefront views are enchanting.

22:00Chill out in style in the Old Town

At the St. Gervais, a historic house that once belonged to the

monastery of Bellelay, you can now choose between 300 different

drinks. Located in the heart of Biel/Bienne’s Old Town, it is also

home to the Etage Club, which puts on an ambitious programme

of culture and concerts ranging from jazz to hip hop.

24:00Art deco at the Elite

The top hotel in town offers four-star comfort in an authentic art

deco setting. The hotel’s brasserie serves select gastronomic

treats, while the Baramundo bar also regularly stages live music.

Christmas Market The biggest Christmas market of the region charms visitors with

its cozy atmosphere and its generous offer of different arts and

crafts. There are decorations for the Christmas tree, candles,

glass, porcelain, ceramics, and earthenware, Advent wreaths,

wooden toys, and crib figures. Glass blowers and ceramic artists

show their skills. In a wooden hut and two heated tents sponsored

by the Bienne citizen's community, you may taste specialties like wild boar sausage or forest warden

tea, while enjoying the warmth of a fire. "Chez Rüfi" at Sessler Street, and the "Art Café" in the

Central Square are other popular hangouts for hungry guests. While the adults stroll and shop, the

wee ones amuse themselves on the merry-go-round or make candles in Central Square.

Santa Claus Market in Biel/Bienne

Somethingâ??s happening in Santaâ??s village, come on over

and see! Santa Claus is inviting all children and adults to join him

in Santaâ??s village in the old town of Biel starting at 3 p.m. There

will be lots of things to see and do. Santa especially looks forward

to listening to pretty childrenâ??s rhymes. He will broadcast them

through a speaker across the entire square. His donkey Grischa

hopes for lots of pets from the kids, while the parents keep warm with mulled wine. Or they might

pick out something good to eat for dinner or help out in the childrenâ??s craft tent where the kids are

busy making candles or ornaments for a special childrenâ??s Christmas tree. The tree can then be

admired on the old town square until long after Christmas.

Robert Walser Square

Biel does not end at the station square. The thoroughfare above

the station has been extended through the station passage.

Robert Walser Square, opened in 2002, thereby provides access

to the lake and to Nidau. The square is structured with strict rows

of ash trees and surrounded by important buildings, such as the

large Coop Centre, the Communication Centre, the commercial

trade school and the Residenz au Lac.

Zentralplatz (Central Square)

Located as it is between the historic city centre and the station,

Zentralplatz constitutes the hub of the city. With its restaurants,

its fountain and attractive stores, this pedestrian zone is always a

very lively meeting place.

Stadtkirche (City Church)

Reformed City Church Originally dedicated to St. Benedict of

Nursia, the church was first mentioned in 1228 in the Lausanne

cartulary (directory). Up until 1798, the city of Biel fell secularly

under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Basel, while being

ecclesiastically part of the Diocese of Lausanne until the

Reformation in 1528. The two previous churches dating from the

Romanesque and Gothic eras are covered by walls and building works. A detailed architectural

history of these two previous buildings is no longer accessible because of the tuffaceous soil

conditions and the installation of the heating system in the early 20th century. The former sacristy in

its crypt-like setting under the choir may still be seen.

Fountains There are some 72 fountains in Biel with the oldest being located

in the Old Town. They supply drinking water and some have their

source in the spring used in Roman times. Engelsbrunnen (Angel

Fountain): An angel protecting a lamb from the devil, a symbol of

the victory of good over evil. Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen (Fountain of

Justice): This is a symbol of the jurisdiction of the city. Venner

Fountain (Banner Carrier Fountain): This fountain is 450 years old. The banner carrier on the fountain

used to signify the right of the city to deploy its own troops to protect the Lord Bishop of Basel, the

allied Bernese and the Swiss Confederates in case of war.

Congress Center The Congress Centre is a major architectural feature of modern

Biel. Designed by Max Schlup and built between 1961 and 1966, it

was renovated in 2000 - 2002 by Rolf Mühlethaler. Its suspended

roof is one of Europe’s largest. The Congress Centre serves as a

conference centre, concert hall and also boasts an indoor pool

and fitness facility. The tower houses several offices.

now the renovated and expanded CentrePasquArt serves the

broader public. The work of Basel architects Diener & Diener, the

ensemble offers a perfect and harmonious blend of old and new.

The Kunsthaus CentrePasquArt provides Switzerland and in

particular the region with innovative contemporary art exhibitions. These support the awareness of

contemporary artistic creativity and its importance to the community and contribute to the promotion

of the artists.

The Strandbadt (lido) was created in 1929-32 as part of a job

creation programme under the auspices of city's planning and

Schlossmuseum Nidau (Castle Nidau Museum)

The Seeland area has not always been as green and fertile as it

is today. For many generations the three lakes region was

constantly plagued by severe floods which regularly destroyed

crops, tore away bridges and inundated houses and barns. The

population was left defenceless against the power of the waters.

The Jura waters correction successfully averted this threat of

flooding. These works transformed this once barren area into a thriving agricultural region.

St. Peter's Island “I have stayed at many lovely places; but nowhere have I felt so

truly happy as on St. Petersinsel in the middle of the Bielersee,

and I think back to no stay with such sweet longing" - Jean-

Jacques Rousseau in "Reveries of the Solitary Walker”, Fifth

Walk. St. Peter's Island was a modest estate with leased

vineyard parcels when Rousseau’s 18th century description

brought it to European attention. The island became a stop on educational tours through Switzerland

and then turned into a popular tourist destination for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty.

Taubenloch Gorge

Walter, a young miller of Bözingen, was in love with a young lady

from the village of Flüglistal. The young lady was stunningly

beautiful and known to all as “little dove”. At that time, the castle of

Rondchâtel was the stronghold of the crooked knight Ingelram.

On the day of the marriage, he attacked the wedding procession

upstream of the gorge. He killed the fiancé and attempted to

kidnap the bride. So as not to fall into the hands of the knight, the young lady threw herself into the

chasm and disappeared there, gliding like a white dove. A short time later, the castle of Rondchâtel

was captured and destroyed, and the knight Ingelram was killed. In spring, lovers are said to hear the

plaintive cries of the beautiful young lady in the gorge.
