Idling gets you nowhere ... Turn your engine OFF

Idling generally refers to running a vehicle engine when the vehicle is stopped, such as at a stop sign or a traffi c light. Most municipalities target unnecessary idling. That is, idling your vehicle while waiting to pick up a friend or family member from school, transit terminals, etc. In these situations, you can turn your engine off while you wait.

Since 2003, the city has actively promoted a campaign to raise awareness about unnecessary idling. In 2004, an idling bylaw was adopted by Burlington City Council. This was updated in 2009. Under the revised bylaw, which is enforced by the city’s parking enforcement staff, 51 tickets and 59 warnings (educational bookmarks) have been issued.

What do I need to know? • Idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel and

produces more carbon dioxide than restarting your engine.

• Unnecessary idling exceeding one minute is

prohibited in Burlington year round. • You could be fi ned $100. • Unattended idling vehicles can be ticketed,

including those on residential driveways.

Notice of Public Information CentreThe City of Burlington and Region of Halton are conducting a Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) study on the reconstruction of the Appleby Line and Harvester Road intersection. The study will address the impacts of the expected increase in traffi c on the operation of the intersection and surrounding road network. The study area covers a distance of about 1.2 kilometres along Harvester Road from Zelco Drive to Century Drive and approximately 300 metres north and south of the intersection on Appleby Line.

This study will be conducted as a “Schedule C” project following the Municipal Engineers Association “Municipal Class Environmental Assessment” (October 2000, as amended in 2007 and 2011), which will address Phases 1 through 4 of the Class EA Process. A problem statement will be documented and a number of alternative solutions will be identifi ed, evaluated, and presented for public review and comment. The outcome of the study will be a preferred solution that minimizes the impacts on the natural, social, cultural, and economic environments.

Consultation with the public is a key component of this study. A Public Information Centre (PIC) will be held for the public and interested stakeholders (land owners and regulatory agencies) to review and discuss issues related to the study. The PIC will be held:
